SPOTLIGHT ON VERNON, CA

Address: 5525 Soto Street, Vernon, CA 90058

About the Site & Operations

Nestled near the Los Angeles port, this facility is positioned for seamless import/export logistics, providing essential services like storage, handling, devanning, and value-added services. It supports a wide range of industries, including consumer goods, industrial equipment, and e-commerce fulfillment, making it a hub of dynamic activity.

Meet the Team

The team at our Vernon location is small but mighty, with 4 full-time employees and 2-4 additional operators brought on when needed. This dedicated crew is led by Warehouse Manager Raymond “Steve” Legaspi, with support from Norman Uili, Alexander Valdez, Rigoberto Davila, as well as temporary staff members Carl Laenier and Ricardo Abad. Together, they ensure smooth operations, regardless of the task.

State-of-the-Art Equipment & Technology

Efficiency is key, with a fleet of forklifts ranging from 5,000-pound standard models to 8,000-pound machines for oversized loads. The warehouse management system (WMS) integrates with handheld scanners, ensuring real-time inventory tracking and accurate order fulfillment.

Peak Season & Challenges

Activity surges during peak times, such as the holiday rush and post-Chinese New Year restocking period, as well as at the close of fiscal quarters. However, challenges like port congestion and California’s regulatory landscape require careful labor planning to maintain efficiency.

Handling Special Projects

The facility’s adaptability is evident in its ability to manage oversized cargo, including solar panels, with specialized equipment like removable dock

plates that support up to 20,000 pounds. Custom palletization and high-volume order processing are tailored to client needs.

Customer Relationships & Flexibility

Strong, collaborative relationships with customers and vendors are at the core of operations. Frequent communication, facility visits, and in-person check-ins ensure alignment with client expectations, fostering long-term partnerships.

Driving Growth & Innovation

Originally focused on basic storage, this facility has expanded to provide services like kitting and devanning. Investments in technology, such as WMS and handheld scanners, have improved efficiency and inventory management, reinforcing BWT’s leadership in logistics.

Looking Ahead

Plans are in place to enhance efficiency by installing Edge of Dock (EOD) plates and expanding the facility to accommodate larger containers and trailers. These upgrades will streamline loading and unloading, optimizing inbound and outbound flow.

Team Goals for the Future

Continuous improvement remains the focus— through investments in technology, enhanced training, and strengthened customer relationships. The team aims to attract new business while maintaining exceptional service for existing clients, ensuring long-term success.

Employee of the Month: Bill Hartsock

Bill Hartsock is being recognized as Employee of the Month for his outstanding performance as a CDL driver at our Fort Wayne, Indiana location. Bill joined Red Baron on December 11, 2023, and since then, he has consistently demonstrated reliability and dedication. He arrives on time, ensures loads are completed, and handles any challenges with a positive attitude.

Bill is committed to safety, promptly reporting any vehicle issues with the tractor, trailer, or equipment. His attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols help maintain high operational standards. Bill’s willingness to assist his team, often helping with tasks outside of his duties, contributes to a positive work environment.

He also shows initiative, suggesting a switch to new tires for the tractors to reduce blowouts and prevent damage, improving efficiency and safety. Bill has built strong relationships with our client, Clarios, and their receivers, with one receiver in Zanesville specifically praising his professionalism. His ability to remain calm under pressure and solve problems on the fly makes him a valuable asset to the team.

Bill's consistent work ethic and proactive attitude not only contribute to the success of day-to-day operations but also help foster a culture of excellence. His willingness to take on extra responsibilities ensures the team can meet high standards, even during the busiest times. With a perfect attendance record and continuous effort to improve, Bill truly exemplifies what it means to be a reliable, hardworking team member. Workplace Wisdom – March

"Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to results." — Bob Proctor

Accountability is a core value that drives success in any workplace. It involves taking responsibility for your actions, performance, and the outcomes of your work. At BWT Logistics, fostering accountability among team members enhances productivity, encourages a culture of trust, and helps us achieve our goals. Here are some key aspects of accountability in the workplace:

Ownership of Tasks: Accept responsibility for the work you are assigned and ensure its completion to the best of your ability.

Clear Communication: Keep your team and managers updated on progress, challenges, and deadlines to avoid misunderstandings.

Setting Realistic Expectations: Understand the scope of your responsibilities and set achievable goals to ensure high-quality results.

Learning from Mistakes: Accountability isn’t just about meeting expectations; it’s also about learning from missteps and using them as opportunities for growth.

Supportive Environment: Hold yourself accountable, but also encourage and support your colleagues in meeting their own responsibilities.

When accountability is prioritized, individuals and teams are more motivated, and we all contribute to building a more efficient and effective workplace.
