Year in Review 2015-2016 was a year of implementation, action and tremendous growth! We spent our previous year thoroughly examining our program model, identifying gaps and visioning for new, necessary programs with the BW and wider community. Now, this was the year to put all of these ideas into ACTION! This year we launched several major new initiatives including: the Brain Student Fellowship and the student-led Campus Kitchen Project. Both of these programs provide a new direction for student leadership and learning. The Brain Fellowship allows students to take their vision for social change to new levels by developing and implementing their own Social Change Projects. The Campus Kitchen Project stays true to our roots of student leadership— as this student team worked diligently for over a year to bring this national program to the BW campus and community! The kitchen officially launched in February 2016!

Another area of rapid growth has been our academic service-learning offerings. The ServiceLearning Advisory Committee approved 4 new courses across disciplines and we saw a record 10 service-learning courses offered this year. We look forward to seeing this number continue to grow as community engagement is infused campus-wide across the curriculum!

In addition to expanding new programs, our hallmark programs have also seen growth— including 11 Alternative Break trips, engaging over 100 BW students in this social justice and service Immersion program.

We celebrate the successes highlighted in this report and THANK all of our campus and community partners who made each opportunity possible!

International Service Experience “Compassion and love can always be communicated despite language barriers and these things need communicated more often in everyday society.” - ISE 2016 participant This lesson and many more were learned by students participating in ISE 2016.

The group of 11 students & 2 advisors served with Outreach 360 in the Dominican Republic for two weeks in May. Two BW alumni, Nicole Topp and Jackie Lee, joined the group for their second week of service. The group taught English in Escuela Basica John F. Kennedy in Monte Cristi, and experienced Dominican culture through planned educational activities and by simply living in the community. It was an especially exciting time to be in the Dominican given the presidential election took place while the students were there. OCO’s partnership with Outreach 360 began in 2006 and has included 3 trips to the Dominican and 1 to Nicaragua.

Weekly Service Programs Weekly Service Programs are a mainstay within the Office of Community Outreach.

Our team explored opportunities for new weekly programs with additional organizations in 2015-2016 while maintaining programs with five of our long-term partners. Patric Hoang established a new weekly program with ASIA Inc.’s Dream School program. Volunteers began assisting students with homework and enrichment activities at ASIA, Inc. during Spring Semester of 2016. The program is slated to continue in the next academic year. During our exploration, we formed a relationship with the Boys 2 Men program in Berea and were able to connect them with BW’s Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

A small group of Phi Tau’s volunteered with the program on a regular basis throughout Spring Semester and will continue in Fall Semester 2016.

92 student participants contributed over 1000 hours of service to local community partners through Weekly Service Programs this year!

Special Projects Team SPT had another successful year coordinating our year of annual events. The team developed a fantastic new partnership with Shoes & Clothes for Kids, hosting our first annual Sock and Underwear Drive!

Campus Kitchen Project This student-run program keeps food from going to waste, by turning it into nutritious meals for those who are struggling with food insecurity. In the process, we are developing student leaders and empowering them to create programs that open pathways between BW and the local community.

February 2016: Founder of LA and DC Central Kitchens, Robert Egger, visits BW for the official CKBWU opening!

April 2016: 5 CKBWU student leaders travelled to the University of Arkansas to attend the National Food Waste & Hunger Summit.

Spring 2016: CKBWU produces 100 nutritious meals for our neighbors at Quarrytown Berea each month!

Special Events & Programs BW Service Fair This annual BW Tradition welcomed over 20 community partners to campus to promote service opportunities and opportunities to connect with OCO programs!

Poverty Simulation Hosted by the Cleveland Food Bank, the Spring Poverty Simulation event challenged over 75 student participants to understand the barriers that families in poverty face on a day to day basis - from securing affordable housing, maintaining employment, and balancing the uncertainties that arise.

Peace Corps Prep Program BW launched this national program during Fall 2015. Peace Corps Prep program participants have the opportunity to design a personalized program plan that aligns with their interests in international service. Completing the program prepares students to be strong candidates in the Peace Corps application process, and prepares them with a foundation of skills and knowledge to be successful in an intensive international service experience. Program managed in collaboration with Study Abroad.

Alumni Homecoming Reunion OCO welcomed BW alumni and their families to the OCO Affinity Group Reunion during Homecoming Weekend 2015.

Attendees participated in a service project packing lunches for families at Berea Church Street Ministries.

Packaway Hunger This inaugural BW event supporting a new partnership with Mission Guatemala welcomed nearly 300 BW and community volunteers, who packed 41,040 meals in 3 hours to benefit the community nutrition program at Mission Guatemala. Approximately 10% of the packed meals were donated to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank to support local hunger relief efforts. Packaway Hunger coordinated in collaboration with Study Abroad.

Service-Learning Courses ENG 131H - Exposition and Argument Dr. Terry Martin In this “service inspired writing” format students selected the topic of “Hunger” to focus on for the semester. Each student volunteered for a minimum of 15 hours at hunger-related community partner sites and programs. Service sites included: Campus Kitchen Project, Packway Hunger project, St. Pat’s and Walk of Faith food pantry.

CAS 271—Participation in BW TV Duane Battle Students selected the topic of “refugee resettlement” as the focus for their TV production course. Students met with 2 community partner leaders to develop a story, which led to community visits, community interviews and the production of several news-format videos.

PSYCH 315 Child Development Dr. Lisa Green Through direct service experiences working with children, from infancy to pre-adolescence, students study the influence of various contexts including the family, peers, school, and society on child development. Project examples include: tutoring at after-school programs; planning activities for Boys & Girls Clubs; and homework help with English language learners.

CAS 415S Studies in PR: Non-Profit Dr. Julie Miller This course provided students an introductory overview of the public relations process in nonprofit organizations.

It emphasized the role and value of public relations professionals in today’s challenging nonprofit environment. Students worked on a semester-long consulting project with Stand Up for Change!

PHT 373 - Community Health Planning Dr. Emilia Lombardi The course provided students with the understanding and experience in conducting community health planning, assessment, and evaluation for the purpose of helping organizations better serve their communities. Students worked on a semester-long assessment project in partnership with MetroHealth, Quarrytown Berea and the BW Campus Kitchen Project.

PSY 316 Child Psychopathology Dr. Tony Dibasio Through direct service experiences working with children, from infancy to pre-adolescence, students study specific developmental stages of childhood as well as psychological and behavior disorders exhibited during childhood. Project examples include: working with art therapy programs; and volunteering with after-school programs supporting youth experiencing homelessness.

What’s new? What’s Next?

Introducing the new: David & Frances Brain Center for Community Engagement Frances Brain attended Baldwin Wallace on a small academic scholarship from 1941-1943. She was the first in her family to attend college and always regretted that she was not able to complete her education and earn her degree. She enjoyed every minute of her time at BW. David attended Baldwin Wallace on the GI Bill after serving in WW II. He was able to complete his degree in three years, working full time at night while supporting his wife, Frances, and their two daughters. David graduated from Baldwin Wallace in 1952, after which he pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School and went on to build a successful career in the insurance industry. David and Frances both gave generously of their time and talents to numerous community organizations and went on to found the Frances Hollis Brain Family Foundation, dedicated to providing for the basic needs of the underserved. In recognition of a transformational experience at BW, David and Frances established an endowment at Baldwin Wallace to teach and mentor undergraduates in leadership skills and promote the understanding that it is the responsibility of all leaders to give of themselves to enhance their communities.

We look forward to continuing our work that began as the Office of Community Outreach—rooted in service and student leadership, while expanding opportunities and moving forward the vision and legacy of the Brain Family!

New in 2016!

The Election Engagement Team focuses on engaging BW students in the election process by registering voters and providing resources to become educated on the issues and candidates.

Student Director, Adam Ross, serves as an Ohio delegate for College Debate 2016.

Adam represented BW at a College Debate conference in Los Angeles in June and has quickly put ideas gained there into action back home by registering voters at Summer Orientation and creating a social media campaign including videos of current and incoming BW students speaking on issues of importance to them.
