Pleasant Hill Farms Guarantee We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Pleasant Hill Farms are fertile to the best of our knowledge. Each bull has passed a Breeding Soundness Evaluation.

In the event of a problem the buyer is responsible to return the bull to Pleasant Hill Farms and if it does not respond as a satisfactory breeder will have the option of a satisfactory re-placement (if available), or the issue of a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. All credit is good for one year from the sale date. We simply ask that you contact us concerning any issues.

This is not a life insurance policy. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason. We would suggest that normal care needs to be exercised toward these animals and that particularly the yearling bulls not be allowed to get too thin. Semen Interest In Bulls We are retaining a 25% revenue sharing and semen interest in every bull. This means that the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him, and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we have the right to the retained share of semen sales revenue from the bull if at some time in the future semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Pleasant Hill Farms retains the semen interest. Realistically, it is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, the reason we are keeping interests in some bulls is that bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after they have proven themselves in the breeding pasture. If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect some semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Pleasant Hill Farms may wish to collect semen from the bull, either for within herd use or to build a jointly owned semen bank for sale purposes. If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, Pleasant Hill Farms has the right to collect the bull for their own use and in that case will pay all collection expenses. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

This sale has gained a great reputation of the place to come for high quality ge-netics. The greatest compliments that we consistently receive are from customers that tell us how they have been able to improve their calf crops with bulls they have purchased from us. Traits like fertility, desirable calving ease, soundness, foot quality, fleshing ability, longevity, carcass traits and pounds of production are areas of consistent focus. We have been consistent and stayed focused on our mission of utilizing our forages more efficiently, emphasizing reproductive efficiencies and increasing pounds of production per cow as three of the areas of emphasis that we have to focus on in order to improve our profitability. It is becoming more and more important to do the little things to maximize production within our cow herds. Your selection of genetics to help you achieve these goals is what we are in business to do.

This is a tremendous set of bulls that we are very proud to offer. We contin-ue to make breeding decisions and work with breeders that improve our genetic base that in turn benefit you, our customer. Our genetics are improving and we are passing that opportunity on to you. You will notice several sire groups of bulls selling as well as full brothers being offered. This is for your benefit. You may select half broth-ers or full brothers in order to help increase the consistency of your calf crop. The Angus, SimAngus and Simmental genetics offered here are second to none! Throughout this catalog you will find high quality bulls that are sound, fertile and genetically bred to improve the cattle with which they are mated. Our sale is being held on February 27th, 2021! This is MARCH MADNESS just a little early! We have grown these bulls on a high roughage forge based ration. All of the bulls have DNA data, ultrasound data, and are weighed, measured, and semen tested. After all of their yearling data is taken, the bulls are then placed on a high roughage maintenance ration. All of the bulls offered for sale will be guaranteed breeders. Every bull will qualify for the Phase One Tobacco money for both Kentucky and Tennessee and we will furnish the paperwork necessary to obtain those funds.

At Pleasant Hill Farms, we develop our bulls in a cost-efficient,

forage-based feeding program, designed to increase the quality and longevity of the bulls we sell. By the daily feeding of available hay and forages along with limited energy and protein supplement, PHF bulls have stronger feet and legs and ideal condition, resulting in better bulls that won’t melt away in the breeding pasture and give longer service.

At PHF, we are always willing to adapt to change in

genetics and management in ways that will increase our efficiency and, ultimately, a better quality product for our buyers. Twenty-five years of bull sales have taught us that there is always room for improvement, and at Pleasant Hill Farms, we will never quit adapting in an effort to produce better beef cattle.

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD) , is the prediction of how future progeny

of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. PRODUCTION EPDs Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value

indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

MATERNAL EPDs Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his

daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

CARCASS EPDs

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy

requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

$VALUE INDEX ($Value), ($Value) an economic selection index allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment.

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in

progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index, expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny

due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency.

Grid Value ($G), an index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny

due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat.

Beef Value ($B), a terminal index, expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in

progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat.

Combined Value ($C), an indexed expressed in dollars per head, includes all traits that make up $M and
