PRESIDENT’S LETTER By Tim Armour, President

A favorite minister, Gil Bowen from Kenilworth Illinois shared the following in a Sunday sermon in 2010: “Is it because so much has come to us so easy that we tend to be impatient, in a hurry, wanting everything now. In frame one Lucy kneels by the bedside with hands folded in prayer. Frame two: she walks into the kitchen where Linus is eating a bowl of cereal. Frame three has her saying, “I was praying for great patience and I quit...” Frame four: she sits down to eat her bowl and says, “I was afraid I might get it.” As we enter another month in lockdown, it is difficult to have the level of patience required to get through this unparalleled event. We don’t yet know how and when it will end. All we can do is hang in there. The Board is actively discussing and developing plans to slowly open up Birnam Wood when the time is right. It will likely not happen as quickly or as completely as we would all like. Our goal is to protect members and staff from getting and passing the disease to others. We will likely offer a soft opening of our restaurants and recreation facilities that will initially be for members only. Our golf events are likely to be member-member events before starting member-guest events. We need to recognize that we have a large portion of our membership that because of age or health (or both) are particularly threatened by this virus. So the food/beverage/groceries to go program will likely continue as an ongoing service for the balance of the year. However, we also have other members that want to dine, play tennis/bocce/croquet and workout in our gym. We will find a way to accommodate these members when the State’s lockdown is discontinued but it will probably involve the need to adapt a bit with appropriate preventative protocols. It is likely that masks and gloves will be ongoing fashion accessories. The spacing between tables in our dining rooms will probably be expanded. If we do any buffets, we will have to bring back plastic “shields” to protect food on the buffet line. We will find a way to reopen the cottages to new guests while insuring the safety of all members in our community. Many will be arriving from beyond 100 miles and will require a period of quarantine before becoming active at the club. These may not be the changes you are looking for but it should give you a sense of the direction we are likely to take. The critical milestone we are hoping for is the availability of a tested and approved Covid-19 vaccine. A recent member suggestion/request was to have a nurse available at the club when a vaccine is available to provide inoculations for all members at a convenient and safe venue. We look forward to providing that service. Until then, we will work to pace and sequence the re-opening of the club in a thoughtful and appropriate manner. We will keep you updated. Thanks for your patience!

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, General Manager

As I enter my fifth month as General Manager, I cannot help but feel a great sense of pride. Our little community has been through so much and yet somehow, we have managed to feel closer. There have been so many selfless, unsung heroes that deserve credit here at Birnam Wood. Take for example Jarrett and his security team. Words cannot describe how thankful I am that Jarrett is our Director of Security. He and his amazing team have been so supportive and eager to help this club stay safe. They have been taking every staff member’s temperature at the gate, as well as watching over the entire property ensuring the golf course is respected and maintained as well as making sure the entire property is safe. Then there is Brendan and his team. Having just started in the beginning of March, Brendan and his culinary team have never looked so great. They are managing so many different moving parts including 120+ meals a day (seven days a week), over 200+ grocery orders a week, over 30 cases of wine and liquor a week and not to mention a 250+ Easter To Go program. And the best part? They are doing it with smiles on their faces. Chef Brandon, Eric, Ivan, and the rest of Brendan’s F&B team have really stepped it up. We are so proud of them! The list goes on and on. From Israel who has been staying in the cottages and making sure our kitchen stays afloat 24/7, to Marty and his crew who have been maintaining our course to keep it playable. On behalf of the entire Birnam Wood staff, we thank you members for the support during this difficult time. I wanted to also introduce Dolly St. Germain as our new Controller. Dolly comes to us from The Meadows Country Club in Sarasota, Florida where she was the Controller. She is originally from Colorado but spent 18 years in Ventura County where her sons reside, and she is happy to be back home! Dolly has 8 years collectively of country club/golf experience at a Controller level at clubs in California, Colorado, and Florida. We interviewed multiple candidates and the search committee and I are thrilled to have Dolly here at Birnam Wood! This month, please look out for To Go specials for Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. Chef Brandon and his team are preparing some fantastic menus to enjoy in your homes. We are also continuing to think of ways to stay innovative and keep the Birnam Wood experience an enjoyable one. If you have any recommendations or suggestions, please feel free to shoot me an email. Cheers, Jordan Sweeney, CSW General Manager/COO

If anyone on staff is feeling the least bit under-the-weather, they are directed to stay away from the Clubhouse until it is determined safe to return. GOLF NEWS

By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional WE MISS YOU!!! It is so strange to be closed for business and unable to serve you, the members. We all understand the importance of this Stay at Home Order, but that does not make it any easier. I have come to my office once a week during our closure to keep up with my responsibilities, pay bills, and retrieve clubs from storage. It is great that only a few clubs and speed carts have remained in storage. That tells me that many of you are still enjoying our wonderful golf course. As I sit in my office today, the weather is absolutely perfect, and I have seen at least 30 golfers tee off and that is all before 12:00pm. A big “Thank you” goes out to Marty and his crew for continuing to work on the golf course three days a week to keep our fairways and greens playable for all to enjoy. It is a little odd playing without tee markers, rakes in bunkers, or flagsticks in the hole, not to mention the raised cup that serves as the players’ target. For these reasons, players should not post scores during this time. I want to encourage everyone to continue practicing safe golf for as long as this closure lasts. All players should maintain safe social distancing while at the facility, at least 6 feet apart. Groups must be 4 players or less. Only one rider per cart, unless it is your spouse. Junior golfers must be accompanied by a member, unless they have received their certification from one of the golf professionals. No guests are allowed, except immediate family. These policies must be adhered to so we can keep this horrible virus out of Birnam Wood. The safety of the members and staff are the club’s first priority. We want everyone to enjoy their time on the course and there are things that will enhance everyone’s golf experience. We are asking all groups to tee off on the first hole. This helps maintain flow throughout the golf course. A few extra minutes on the golf course is not the worst thing in the world and no group wants to be surprised by a golfer, or group of golfers, suddenly appearing in front of them on the course. This takes away from the pace of play and causes frustration. We have a unique community here at Birnam Wood and we want to protect and enhance the sense of community, especially during this challenging time. When playing, it is important to take care of the golf course itself. Please smooth footprints in bunkers as you exit, kick in divots (or fill with sand), repair as many ball marks as possible, and adhere to the policies listed above. We will get through this, hopefully sooner rather than later. We miss you and look forward to being here to serve our members once again!!!

TENNIS NEWS

By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis Due to the Coronavirus, tennis courts have been closed at all private clubs, public centers and schools. The United States Tennis Association recommends that people not play tennis during the Coronavirus pandemic. USTA believes there is the possibility that the virus responsible for Covid-19 could be transmitted through common sharing and handling of tennis balls, gate handles, benches, net posts and even court surfaces. If you have access to a private court, I suggest you play singles not doubles in order to ensure adequate social distancing. Also, wear a latex glove on your non hitting hand. Bring disinfecting wipes and take off all your clothes when you return to your house and shower right away. Don’t forget to remember to watch the tennis channel on Cox, channel 270 as well as Direct TV channel 217. Most importantly, stay well and safe.
