PRESIDENT’S LETTER Larry Guy, President
When I was thinking about what I would write in the July newsletter, I thought it a good idea to give the membership some interesting information about our employees and their contribution to Birnam Wood. Birnam Wood has 130 + employees, many of whom don’t have much, if any, interaction with the members. Finding good employees is challenging for any business and it is certainly no exception for a private club. Having several long term employees tends to signify employee satisfaction, which in turn translates to higher productivity and stability in an organization. It is because of employee’s like Marty Moore (30 years) , Manual Castanon (33 years) and many others on the Golf Course Maintenance staff that members are able to play on such a great golf course. Here are some interesting facts about the housekeeping staff for example. Housekeeping does daily cleaning of the clubhouse and related facilities, guest cottages and locker rooms. Some names you maybe don’t know are Guadalupe Gamboa (39 years), Miguel Gil (38 years), Maria Ramirez (37years), Juana Soriana (37years), Manuel Orozco (36 years) and Rosa Cuevas 36 (years). These are just few of the 14 members of the Housekeeping staff. When at the Club, members are routinely attended to by the food and beverage dining room staff, front desk personnel and golf or tennis staff. We have quite a few staff in other departments who have been employed by Birnam Wood for over 15, 20 and 25 years. Some others you might recognize are Lucy Anderson (28 years), Linda Basydlo (22 years), Colleen Dowd (24 years), David Salcedo (27years) and Hector Estrada (23yrs). All these employees dedicate a large part of their work careers to Birnam Wood. I am also aware there are so many other employee’s working “behind the scenes” who are no less important to the operation of the Club and to member satisfaction. Birnam takes member satisfaction very seriously and we’ve found this ranks very high with our members. We have some of the best employees in the private club world. I think we can be very proud of the service they provide to the members.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Ari Kreisler Santa Barbara feels like Santa Barbara again! June had a plethora of sunshine and the vibrancy of the Club is soaring. The month got started with a new format for the President’s Cup: A Ryder Cup style golf tournament which was full of team comradery (see the winning team’s picture below). The Thursday Night BBQ’s, all attended by 100+ Members were touted as “better than ever.” Father’s Day was an extra special evening which was sold out and got rave reviews. The Daou Wine Dinner was one of those magical evenings that gave Chef Brandon a chance to take Members on a culinary journey as he served Members a fine four-course meal paired with world-class wines. As the weather and fun heats up around Birnam Wood, July gets the extra special benefit of seeing the completion of the new and improved 9th Hole. Marty Moore and the Hole-9 Committee consisting of Ed Brady, Jim Carder, Andrew Anthony, Andy Powell, Lee Asseo, Mike Goodcase and Mitch Vargas deserve our gratitude as they worked tirelessly to ensure we not only repaired #9, but made it more beautiful, better for play and safer for the future. Please join us on July 25th at 4pm as we officially open the 9th hole with complimentary wine and beer and give golfers their first chance to play the hole. Looking forward to August, there’s a big summer party in the making as I write this. Live music, dancing and an abundance of “buzz!” Mark your calendars for August 18th and stay tuned for more details.
Congratulations to The 2018 Ryder Cup Champions! June 1st & 2nd, 2018

HOUSE COMMITTEE CORNER By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” The above quote was contributed by House Committee member, Cindy Fraser. It really sums some great advice for the many changes we’ve been going through at our club! Thanks, Cindy! We formed a new House Committee last fall. Our mission has been to respond to all the wonderful ideas you shared with us in the 2017 member survey. Our “take away” from your survey comments is that you wanted “MORE FUN AND MORE MUSIC”. Our very enthusiastic and energetic committee has been working hard to bring that into reality! Some of the events since the first of the year include: A rockin’ New Year’s Eve party, a huge Super Bowl party, Valentine’s Day Opera Night, Bingo Night hosted by our own Ricardo Calderon, Wine and Painting classes, a special Piano Bar Night by Member Ed Mullen and a summer focus on improving the music at the Thursday night Bar BQ. Some great fun to look forward to: Western Bar BQ with a live band, a big Summer Party with a great dance band, a Halloween Costume Party with a band. We’ve formed a speaker’s sub-committee to seek out engaging speakers headed by Ricardo Calderon. We will be featuring a dinner/speakers series this fall focused on California History. Please share your feedback with us as well as new ideas! As we say at House Committee, “There are no bad ideas only ones we haven’t tried yet!” We are committed to increasing the VITALITY, VIBRANCY AND FUN QUOTIENT of our wonderful Club!!!

GOLF NEWS
Michael Goodcase Head Golf Professional There are so many reasons why we love Santa Barbara. The month of June exemplified that with absolutely beautiful weather through the first two weeks. We experienced “May Gray”, but the “June Gloom” never materialized for the first two weeks. The golf course is absolutely fantastic now and we are almost ready for tournament season to be in full swing. With that being said, here is an update on the ninth hole. As I look at my office window, I see a crew assembling the rock wall around the lake. Water has been flowing and the lake is about two-thirds full. The irrigation system is in place throughout most of the hole. The sod is scheduled to start being delivered and installed on June 20th. Which means, when you read this article, the hole will be in the “grow in” phase with other small details being wrapped up. That keeps us on schedule to open the last week of July, with the exact date yet to be determined. The Men have had a couple of major events from the end of May through the beginning of June: McLean Member-Member and President’s Cup (Ryder Cup Style). Congratulations to one of our newest members, Chris Gregoire and his partner, Rob Crane for their victory in the 35th Annual McLean Member-Member. This came after winning the horse race on Friday afternoon. Their consistent play (60 & 61) gave them a 1 ½ stroke victory over Chuck Journey and Todd Aldrich (Oak Flight Winner). Congratulations also go out to our gross champions, Dave Barton & Andrew Anthony (136) and to the Creek Flight Winners, Bill Meeker and Don Eversoll (124.5). Meeker and Eversoll won the card off over Jim Carberry and Michael Byram. Just two weeks later, the men had a Ryder Cup style event, The President’s Cup, where global foes competed for bragging rights. Team USA was captained by Larry Guy, Dave Barton, Jim Carberry, and Harry Powell. The World Team was led by David Cronenbold, Andrew Anthony, Andy Gifford, and Lee Asseo. After two days and four different formats of match play, the World Team raised the Cup after beating Team USA by a score of 27 – 21. (Picture on Page 3)

Upcoming events: Men: Wednesday, July 11, will be Men’s Guest Day (12:30 pm Shotgun). The biggest event of the year, the 51st Robert Trent Jones Classic Member Guest will take place over July 26, 27, & 28. Thursday will be optional practice rounds, the always fun Horse Race at 4:00pm, team registration and shopping for players’ tee prizes at the Travis Mathew Mini Tour Bus from 1:00pm through 7:00pm, and finally, our first team auction which will begin at approximately 6:00pm. The competition will begin on Friday as the field plays Aggregate Point Par (12:30pm shotgun). Saturday’s round will be Partner Better Ball and will commence at 10:00am. The event concludes with a fantastic awards celebration, dinner, and live entertainment. Do not miss this one!! Ladies: Tuesday, July 10, will be the Memorial Quota and BBQ. Posture Training = Balance Training Did you know that posture and balance are intricately linked? Think of it – if you are slumping and your body is out of alignment, your center of gravity is off-kilter and you will have less stability. Standing tall with your shoulders relaxed, chest lifted, abdominal muscles engaged and pelvis in alignment gives you the physical and mental confidence to maintain beautiful balance in all your activities. In daily life, good posture helps you keep your equilibrium on any terrain. For a balanced golf swing, proper positioning of your head, shoulders and pelvis is crucial. Tennis demands that you move quickly in many directions: perfect posture will help you stay nimble and able to recover your center of gravity with ease. Good posture will also help relieve neck and back pain: with practice comes awareness and with awareness, good posture! For details, come on into the Fitness Center for your “Handout of the Month” or download it from the Birnam Wood website.

TENNIS NEWS
Dan Webster, Director of Tennis
Summer is here, and we started it off with our Memorial Day Event and Dinner. Thanks to all those players who participated! Our most competitive Ladies match was with Robin Martin, Della Cook, Pam Temple and Lalani, daughter of Ron and Beverly Latimer. Way to compete ladies! We hope all had a wonderful time. Our next June Event was our re-named Twilight Tennis, now to be called, Tennis and Tequila Night! So please keep in mind for scheduling purposes, that these events will take place on the second Thursday of every month until the end of summer. We can start warm up at 5:15 and begin play at 5:30, and play until 7, at which time we can go up and have dinner on the Terrace for our outdoor bar-b-que. As a reminder to those looking for more hitting opportunities, remember that there are clinics every week to accommodate both men and women:
Tennis Tip: Immutable Doubles Principles The following are fundamental principles that you must not only understand but also believe and buy into. Shot Selection: Your point of contact should determine your shot selection and strategy. The more difficult the low volley you are faced with, the quieter your racket should remain. • Topspin is the spin of choice for power. Slice is the spin of choice for touch shots. • An inside out ground stroke is more difficult that a crosscourt shot. Winners are hit from the net NOT the base line. • A volley is easier than a groundstroke for a put away. • Middle can solve the riddle: Aim deep down the middle when hitting with power; Angles create angles: only hit them if you are sure to finish the point.
Mixed Clinic every Tuesday at 9:30-11; Ladies Clinic Thursday morning at 9:30-11; Men’s Doubles with the Pro, Thursday at 2-3:30; and Ladies Clinic, Thursday morning 9:30-11 Please contact the Tennis Pro Shop, 805.969.7394, for any questions about events and clinics, as well as, private lessons to add to your tennis enjoyment!
