PRESIDENT’S LETTER David Grotenhuis, President

We continue to have a busy schedule of events here at Birnam Wood. It seems that each event is full of fun and excitement, and great food! I will let others summarize these activities in other places in this newsletter. I’d like to continue to bring everyone up to date as to where we are in activating our Strategic Plan. One thing I have learned in my career in the development business is that development projects move at glacial speed. For example, when the Bocce ball project was approved some time ago there was no plan to do the several projects we are now contemplating. Now that we are pursuing several projects, we want to make sure that they are all in harmony with each other. That means we need to pause slightly on the Bocce courts until we are sure what will be entailed in the renovation of the Clubhouse. For example, will there be a change in the terrace surface? If so, we will want to match that with the patio area around the Bocce courts. This is just one of many items that needs to be considered. We have also retained a project manager who will be with us throughout the entire multi year process. He will only work on an “as needed” basis but will provide the continuity need for the several projects we hope to build. We have identified the interior design firm we would like to engage in the Clubhouse renovation. We hope to have them fully engaged in the next 30 days. They will begin with scope and plans as soon as that engagement is given. I know many members have questions and ideas about what we are doing at Birnam Wood to make it a better place for all. I want to encourage any member to contact me with any of these questions and ideas. My contact information is in the Club Roster. As previously mentioned, this undertaking is heavily dependent on inviting new qualified members to join our community. Let’s all continue to look for folks that we think would enjoy and contribute to this wonderful club.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager

Birnam Wood is special for many reasons. One is that Boards and Committees long before ours had the foresight to make decisions they knew would positively impact the shaping of the Club. In 1987, they plucked Marty Moore from Riviera Country Club and that move has paid dividends for over 31 years. Sure, Marty has won awards for overall course management excellence and best management practices. But Marty is special beyond that. With 145 homes directly on the golf course and living in the same gated community, you can imagine that Marty’s role as a Golf Course Superintendent is different from most. Nicknamed “Mayor” of Birnam Wood, Marty’s responsibilities include some oversight of all 223 acres. In recent years, things have really changed for Birnam Wood and especially for Marty. Seven years ago, we began suffering from extreme drought. Where the average rainfall was about 20 inches, Birnam Wood has received over 12 inches in a year only once. Marty’s leadership helped the Club embark on a full turf replacement to Bermuda which was completed in 2016. 15% of the turf was converted to non-turf; first pine-straw, then gorilla hair (which was Marty’s original recommendation). Marty and his crew did a majority of the hardest work which saved the Club almost a half million dollars. In 2017, Marty teamed-up with Mitch Vargas to help lead the Club through the Roads Project. Not only was it $400,000 under budget, but it was expertly coordinated to appease Club Members and Homeowners.

In December 2017, everything changed as the Thomas Fire, the biggest in the history of California, ravaged the hills above Santa Barbara and closed the Club for three weeks. While the area was evacuated for two weeks, Marty stayed. He blew ash off Greens and mowed. He hand-watered not only the turf but the starved trees and shrubs and surrounding vegetation. Two weeks later, in the early hours of January 9th, the burned mountains just above the Club received a storm. Depending on the data source – National Weather Service, County of Santa Barbara or the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration – rainfall met or exceeded a 200-year storm standard. This caused massive mud and debris to flow throughout Montecito and down through Birnam Wood. Mud and debris flowed around normal water flow areas, tore apart bridges and flowed over the East Valley Road (192), through Birnam Wood homes and onto the golf course. The ninth fairway was under 3,000 cubic yards of mud and debris. The pond, located at the end of the fairway, filled with another 12,000 yards of mud. The roads inside Birnam Wood were impassable. First Responders wanted to use the Clubhouse as their ground-zero but they were not able to get to the Club. Marty jumped February 2019

3

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER CONTINUED on a tractor and began clearing roads and helping residents from their homes. Soon, First Responders began arriving and by midday, they were landing helicopters on the hole18 fairway adjacent to the Clubhouse. Along with Mitch and his team, Marty worked tirelessly helping to coordinate the rescue efforts. Without drinkable water, gas or power, and then for two weeks while the area was evacuated, Marty and Mitch never stopped. Dayin, day-out, Marty helped ensure the community was safe. The Club had over 250 firemen, FEMA personnel, policemen and rescuers staged inside the Clubhouse. At one point, in order to save the 9th green, Marty even convinced the fire department to hose-off the mud and debris that would have killed the green. That wasn’t all. During the two weeks of evacuations, Marty coordinated efforts to have the mud removed from the 18 resident’s homes and yards that were inundated. He was instrumental in clearing drains on the roads and course, ensured all streets were passable and that the golf course received adequate attention. After a month, the Clubhouse was allowed to reopen. The Golf course opened 15 playable holes. A few days later there were 17 playable holes and Marty’s focus moved to repairing the pond on hole-9 and clearing the mud off the fairway. The irrigation system on the entire hole was shot. The pond, the Club’s main reservoir for its well water, was destroyed. Through careful planning, the day before the Member-Guest and only six months after the mudslide, hole-9 re-opened for play on July 25th with a grand celebration. For all this, Marty has recently received yet another award. But this one is different and holds a special place in his heart: The Robert Trent Jones, Robert Kummer, Golf Course Superintendent of the Year Award. Mr. Kummer, a Green Committee chair and two-time president of Birnam Wood, worked closely with Marty for the better part of two decades. Mr. Kummer, who helped found the RTJ Society in 2004, would have been so proud of Marty. The award came with a cash prize and in typical Marty fashion, he distributed it to his staff. Marty is the ambassador of this Club. Aside from his exceptional agronomic and management skills, he has always managed to do much more with less staff. He is an environmental leader, a wonderful father and husband and it is quite possible that the decision in 1987 to bring Marty Moore to Birnam Wood was the single best decision ever made by Birnam Wood.

HOUSE COMMITTEE CORNER

By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee WE’RE OFF TO A GREAT START IN 2019! We kicked off the new year with a New Year’s Eve party that rocked the house! Members danced the night away to our favorite LA band whose lead singers set the place on fire! The “Go Big Club” went all out to transform the club into a great nightclub vibe! Then, there was the SEAFOOD EXTRAVAGANZA... no understatement there! Everything imaginable from the sea was beautifully prepared and presented! The dessert table brought us to our knees! I think it’s safe to say that our members were blown away when they entered the once again “transformed” club house for WINTER JAZZFEST! From the wonderful New Orleans style cuisine (there were several at our table who almost overdosed on Beignets warm from the oven) to the decor and fun jazz band (not to mention the saxophone ice sculpture spouting Hurricanes!!) it was a spectacular experience!! SO PROUD OF OUR CLUB! At these events, I’ve had an opportunity to talk to and hear from our members about their experience of the “new and Improved Birnam.” I can tell you our members are loving it!!! They frequently talk about being thrilled with the new level of FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT!

All this would not be happening without the vision of Ari Kreisler and the creativity of Jordan Sweeney! Also, credit goes to Chef Brandon and his staff who are willing to try new things and work hard to achieve them! Much credit also goes to our new events coordinator, Monica Dawson who overseas and helps execute these events. A big acknowledgement to our new engineer, Israel Ruiz who literally hand builds most of the props (the boat, the music notes, the lighting etc.) that make our events so beautifully decorated! Eric and Ivan are helping at every turn to make sure the service is at a new level. When you have the opportunity please take the time to acknowledge and thank our staff for the “TRANSFORMATION” that is taking place at Birnam! And please don’t forget to let your friends know about the fun and excitement that is happening here. WE NEED NEW MEMBERS to maintain and enhance the vitality and viability of our wonderful club! Coming up: FAR NIENTE/NICKEL AND NICKEL WINE DINNER on February 7th. We encourage you to sign up early for VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER featuring a fabulous singer who literally channels Frank Sinatra! Can’t wait! Our goal is to continue to elevate the member satisfaction this year! So please keep your wonderful ideas and feedback coming our way!

SOMMELIER’S CORNER

By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, Assistant General Manager I hope everyone has been having fun with all the new events! I wanted to give special thanks to Monica Dawson and Israel Ruiz. They have really brought a lot to this club since their arrival and are helping us take our club to new heights! I also want to thank Chef Brandon, his team and Eric Salazar and his team for also stepping up their game to help complete this amazing team. In February, we are having a Far Niente Wine Dinner on Thursday, the 7th. Far Niente Winery, located in Oakville (Napa Valley), opened in 1885 and is one of the oldest wineries in the state. They feature a fantastic, crisp Chardonnay and a famous Cabernet Sauvignon. For this event, Chef Brandon gets to go all out and show off his tremendous talents. The food, wine and fine dining service WILL be top notch. If you want to show off your club, bring your guests to this dinner. If you haven’t already, join our Birnam Wood Wine Club! We get exclusive deals by our suppliers and can offer you amazing wines at a price you can’t find anywhere else. This is a perfect opportunity to enhance your cellar. To join, just e-mail at jsweeney@bwgc.net or fill out the form at the front desk. The front desk also has flyers of upcoming events that you could grab before you leave.

Wine Time

This is one white wine we are featuring that you MUST try. Belondrade y Lurton from Rueda Spain. This 95-point white wine, fermented and aged in oak, is a single varietal Verdejo made from over 30-year-old vineyards located at an altitude of 750 meters above sea level. To me, this beautiful, lush wine tastes like a White Burgundy from Meursault. Next time you are up at the club for dinner, instead of having a glass of Chardonnay, give this Verdejo a taste. Thank you all for your continuous support, Jordan Sweeney

GOLF NEWS

By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional Well, 2019 is well underway!! We have had some wonderful rain systems come our way. It has been very nice having half to an inch, then a break, followed by another half inch to an inch. We are crossing our fingers that this pattern will continue, and we exceed our average rainfall for the year. The golf course benefits tremendously from natural irrigation. It is like receiving liquid gold, especially for us here in Montecito. As we continue to see the golf course in fantastic playing condition, it is even more important to care for the course. The Golf and Greens Committee want to encourage everyone to “Honor the Green Line.” The painted broken green line around our green complexes are there to remind all players to keep golf carts from crossing into areas where golf cart traffic is restricted. It is so important to keep the area surrounding our greens in the best possible play conditions. Our Bermuda turf goes into a state of dormancy when the temperatures drop. Our turf becomes quite firm and fast. The more carts that traverse our hills around the greens increase the amount of distance that balls carom away from the hole, as well as, creating tighter lies from which players chip. So, again, the committees, and fellow golfers, would appreciate all players “Honoring the Green Line.”

IS YOUR GOLF SWING IN A STATE OF RECOVERY? By Scott Maier, PGA, Birnam Wood Teaching Professional I often think back to my days as an instructor at the Jim McLean Golf School. A phrase I would often hear instructors say to their students is, “You’re in a state of recovery.” Jim McLean even mentions it in his book The Eight Step Swing. That phase means a student has a fault in the set-up or early in the sequence of the swing and now must compensate or make a correction before they get to impact. Poor posture is a quick way to put your golf swing into a state of recovery. Poor posture can lead to a multitude of problems. The more common problems are inconsistent ball striking, off balance swings, inefficient pivot and rotation and incorrect sequence of motion. Here is a drill to help you achieve good posture: First, grab any golf club in your bag. Now stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold the club behind you in both hands, parallel to the ground (see first photo below). You should feel the shaft against your hamstrings. Flex your knees until you can’t see your shoe strings and then bend from the waist (see second photo below). Now ask yourself, “What feels different?” Maybe it’s your hamstrings, quadriceps, lower back, or your abdominal muscles. Whatever that difference is, focus on it. That’s your cue that you’re making a change. As you practice this drill be sure to keep you weight evenly distributed between your left and right foot, evenly distributed toe to heel. Make sure you don’t lean over your toes or sit back on your heels. In summary, don’t put your swing into a state of recovery! Practice this drill for a couple minutes every day and watch your posture and golf swing improve. Call the golf shop today to schedule a lesson so we can evaluate your posture and how it impacts your golf swing.

Serving to the body is optimal because returners have more trouble directing this serve where they want it to go (i.e. away from the net player). If a serve is hit to the body, the player must quickly move out of the way and get in position to hit a decent return.

BREAKFAST 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. THE GRILL Full Service Breakfast Tuesday through Sunday LUNCH 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday Full Service ~ Grill Room Sunday ~ Brunch Menu 10:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Most players have poor footwork when faced with a body serve or get flustered when the ball is coming straight at their body. This is exactly what you want when serving against a returner. A serve to the body takes away the ability of a player to move forward while hitting the ball. And the body serve reduces the angles that returners can hit into. By contrast, serving wide gives the returner a great crosscourt angle, and should only be utilized if the server can accurately place his or her slice serve and produce a wide angle. Serving down the T is also a great serve for cutting down angles and forcing a more difficult inside-out return to avoid hitting near the net player. However, I think the body serve is even better. The body serve is the most likely to produce an errant or misplaced return because it is extremely difficult to move out of the way and hit a well-placed shot. The body serve is also the easiest and safest serve to hit. This is because you are aiming for the middle of the service box. As a result, you have less of a chance of hitting the ball wide. Throw in some nasty spin with the body serve and you are going to get a lot of weak returns.

FITNESS NEWS

By Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish, Co-Directors Bump Up Your Metabolism! According to the Mayo Clinic, “Metabolism is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into energy. During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function”.

muscle tissue you have, the higher your metabolic rate. For a great workout plus ideas on how to incorporate strength training into your workout, try the FREE Bootcamp Class on Tuesday, February 12 at 3:00 pm!

Even when you’re at rest, your body needs energy for all its “hidden” functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate — what you might call metabolism. Several factors determine your individual basal metabolism, including: • Your body size and composition. People who are larger or have more muscle burn more calories, even at rest. • Your sex. Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than do women of the same age and weight, which means men burn more calories. • Your age. As you get older, the amount of muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight, slowing down calorie burning. What can you do to keep your metabolism high and burning calories? Incorporate the following eight Good Habits! 1) Eat Breakfast. Because your metabolism slows down during sleep, eating can fire it up and help you burn more calories throughout the day. When you eat breakfast, you’re telling your body that there are plenty of calories to be had for the day. When you skip breakfast, the message your body gets is that it needs to conserve rather than burn any incoming calories. 2) Eat the Right Breakfast. OK, so it’s about more than just eating something in the morning. If you grab a sugary donut or eat a muffin in the car, you’re setting yourself up to crash later. Instead, choose something with filling protein and fiber like eggs, yogurt and berries or wholewheat toast topped with peanut butter. 3) Get up! Going from your bed to your office chair to your car to your couch can lead to a very sedentary routine. And sitting for extended periods puts your body into energy-conservation mode, which means your metabolism can suffer. 4) Strength Train. Cardio is great, and it can quickly burn calories, but once you’re done running or cycling, your calorie burn quickly returns to normal. When you do HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and resistance-based workouts, however, your calorie burn stays elevated for longer as your muscles repair themselves. The more active 20

February 2019

5) Get Enough Protein. Protein feeds your muscles, promotes satiety and is an important component to sustaining a healthy weight. Eat too little, and you may have trouble building or maintaining muscle mass — and per the above, we know muscle’s importance to metabolism. Also, protein requires more energy to break down than carbs or fat, so you’ll actually burn more calories during digestion. 6) Get Enough Sleep. One bad night’s sleep is enough to leave you feeling sluggish and impair your cognitive processing. String together several nights in a row — or a lifetime of inadequate sleep — and science shows decreased metabolism and hormonal imbalances may follow. 7) Drink Plenty of Water. In a study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, researchers found drinking 500 milliliters of water (about 2 cups) increases metabolic rate by 30%, and that spike lasts for more than an hour. So, drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and you’ll get the added benefit of a boosted metabolism. 8) Relax. When stress levels increase, your body produces a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol leads to increased appetite, makes us crave comfort foods, decreases our desire to exercise and reduces sleep quality — all things that negatively impact metabolism. So, while you can’t always control your stress levels, managing stress can go a long way toward protecting your body’s internal fire.

The Fitness Center will be closed at 6:00 pm on Friday, February 1st for floor cleaning. We will reopen at 6:00 am on Saturday, February 2nd. Thank you.
