PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Larry Guy, President

Birnam Wood has taken a major step toward planning for the future by forming a Strategic Planning Committee. The primary responsibility of the committee will be to establish a plan that will be used to recommend to the Board Birnam’s future in relation to facilities, activities and staffing, as well as establishing priorities among them for member satisfaction. The Club definitely has the “buzz” going right now and the goal is to ride this fun vibe and start growing the Membership. By adding new, attractive facilities which are also attractive to younger members, we are confident that together we can build amenities for all members to enjoy. Speaking of “buzz,” our new Assistant General Manager, Jordan Sweeney, has officially begun his employment at Birnam Wood! Over the last few weeks, I got a glimpse of what Jordan meant to the members and staff at Oakmont Country Club. The members of Oakmont held going-away parties for Jordan and member after member spoke of the monumental impact Jordan made on their Club. His wine dinners and social events provided an incredible boost of vivaciousness and the Oakmont membership really embraced it. Jordan breathed new life into Oakmont and in just two years, Jordan created a legacy. Even the entire staff at Oakmont lined-up and spoke about how much they adored him. I know that Birnam Wood members will embrace Jordan in the same manner and I am so excited to see what kind of legacy he can create for OUR Club. On Friday, August 3rd at 5 p.m. we will be holding a welcoming party for Jordan. Please come on out and meet Jordan and lets show Jordan some Birnam love! The Super Sizzlin’ Summer Party is set for August 18th. There’s a rockin’ band, open bar and killer spread by Chef Brandon. Speaker Night invites Tim Metzinger to discuss the Owens Valley Water War. The Hawaiian BBQ was a great success and sold out as all the Thursday Night BBQs are. Birnam has been an exciting community meeting place for members and guests this summer. July proved to be an exciting month with the 9th Hole re-opening party and the Robert Trent Jones Men’s Member-Guest Golf Tournament. The future of Birnam Wood is here now. The Finance Committee approved two Bocce Ball courts and a Fire Pit. This will provide an additional fun activity and outside venue for our members and guests. Birnam is back and our members and guests are enjoying all we have to offer!

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Ari Kreisler I wish I could share with you all of the emails and letters I get from Members that continue to support the Club in ways that are simply outstanding. Almost daily, the staff and I get to see your heart and character and it inspires us to continue to give more of ourselves to this wonderful Membership. The big smiles are multiplying. Our Thursday night barbeques would be better classified as Thursday night parties. The food at the Wine dinner was so over-the-top delicious that Brandon is getting anointed with legendary status! The Hawaiian BBQ was so much fun that nobody wanted to leave. As we get set to reopen the 9th Hole and turn the page on that chapter in our history, we are at almost the same exact time lucky enough to be adding Jordan Sweeney to our team. Jordan’s talents are sure to bring the Club to the next level and I am so excited to watch what Jordan can accomplish with your amazing support of him. Please join me in thanking David Weber who deserves enormous kudos for really stepping-up in the interim beyond expectations. Lastly, whatever you do, don’t miss “THE” Summer Party. The team is set to pull out all the stops and create a night that will be talked about for months, if not years!

House Committee Corner By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee

One thing is clear.....this summer has been action packed at Birnam Wood! The Hawaiian Party exceeded all expectations with fresh leis flown in from Hawaii, an exceptional Hawaiian band and hula dancers capped off the evening! And how about Chef Brandon’s beautiful presentation of a whole sea bass?....almost too pretty to eat! Hats off to Ari, David, Sarah, Chef Brandon and their wonderful team! They pulled out all the stops to provide an exceptional party for the 200 attendees (a record number, I believe!). Thank you for all the positive feedback we’ve been receiving on the party! All of our events have been extremely well attended this summer! The Thursday night Bar BQ’s have become quite the meeting place for our members. It’s become a real summer favorite! Almost all of our events have been sold out with a waiting list. I think it speaks to our members’ need to both heal from all we’ve been through this year as well as to celebrate life! The Daou Wine Dinner was also well received! 70 members attended the dinner and gave rave reviews to Chef Brandon’s carefully designed dinner to be paired with the wine! What’s yet to come this summer: The R.T.J., a golfer’s favorite is coming up in late July. The Western Party and Bar BQ will be on August 9th with a fun western style band! In addition, we’ve gotten encouragement from a number of our members who wanted a big summer party (reminiscent of the well-received 50th Anniversary Party last summer!) So we have listened and have been working with staff to plan “THE” “Super Sizzlin’ Summer Party”on August 18th! This party will be the crescendo of the summer with a great dance band, a 3-course dinner and lots of fun surprises! So be sure to mark it on your calendar and reserve a table with your friends soon! The Fall will bring our Speaker’s Dinner Series. There will be a trio of speakers focused on California History – the first will be September 21st – keep watch for the dates on the other two! Many thanks for your wonderful suggestions, your support and your great sense of FUN!

GOLF NEWS Head Golf Professional, Michael Goodcase

I am ecstatic to report that our Ninth Hole is open for everyday play. Kudos to all of the committee members involved in the redesign of this hole. It looks absolutely beautiful!! The strategic element will be slightly different with the addition, and movement, of bunkers throughout the hole. Players will have to know their comfort levels when executing shots. Layup shots will have to be true layups, well short of the edge of the lake and cross bunker. Players choosing to play aggressively must be accurate with good distance control, as the width of the green has narrowed. Players have been given a slight bail out area to the right of the green to allow for slightly missed shots. I encourage everyone to come out for a round of golf. The golf course is in fantastic condition, and you need to experience the ninth hole for yourself. Congratulations to Asia Anthony for her victory in the Ladies’ Memorial Quota & BBQ Tournament. She finished the day with +11 Quota Points. She made six pars, two bogeys, and net par on number nine for a front nine score of 38. She continued her good play with a back nine score of 39. Congratulations on a wonderful victory!! July plays home to our Men’s Member-Guest, the Robert Trent Jones Classic. It is being played for the 51st time. The tournament committee has worked diligently to make sure all of the players have an incredible time. They will shop for merchandise from Travis Mathew from their Mini-Tour Bus. They booked Chuck “The Hitman” Hiter to perform his trick shot show before the Stag Dinner on Friday night, and, of course, a spectacular dinner and awards celebration with live music on Saturday. Players will experience high levels of fun, food and drink throughout the weekend. Look for the results in the next Bulletin. The Men’s Club Championship will be contested August 24-26. The championship flight will play 54 holes of stroke play. The net and senior flights will join the field and compete on Saturday and Sunday in 36 holes of stroke play competition. Please sign up in the golf shop. You could be our next Club Champion (Gross, Net, or Senior, if at least 65 years of age)!

The Lady Macbeth’s Challenge (Member-Guest) will be here soon. The ladies take to the course to compete in their member-guest on September 13 & 14. The theme of their event will be “Thank you, Search and Rescue”. Our club is back to operating at full capacity, and we can never forget what took place in December and January. Also, we can never thank the Search and Rescue Workers enough for all of their efforts throughout those trying times. The couples have the final Jump Up on August 12. There is an eighteen and nine hole flight. If you want to play eighteen holes, then you will tee off at 1:00pm. If you only want to play nine holes, then you will tee off at 3:00pm. In either case, all players will gather for awards and dinner following golf in the Grill. Please sign up in the golf shop. Also, the Couples’ Club Championship, Lads & Lassies, will fall on Labor Day weekend, just as in the past. It will be a 1:00 p.m. shotgun both Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, September2. There will be food following each round. Awards will be given out before dinner on Sunday evening. Who will be next to get their name on the Crooked Club Award in the 19th Hole?

FITNESS NEWS Co-Directors, Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish

Which App Are You Living? I recently had an interesting conversation with one of our esteemed members about the dating app Tinder. Now, neither he nor I have used this particular app and I don’t even know anyone who has, but it got us to thinking – which app would work for what ages? Obviously, Tinder is for the 20 to 40 year olds. Perhaps the younger set should have their “Spark”, and as we age, the “Flame” app would be for the 40 to 50 year olds, “Ember” for 50 to 70 and “Glow” for those over 70! According to the website Medical Daily, the human body has two different ages: a chronological age and a biological age. Chronological age refers to the actual time a human has been alive, while biological age refers to how old that human seems. “Most of us have all had the experience of being surprised to find out that someone is far younger than we had imagined — for instance, when an individual we thought was in their late 50s turns out to actually be in their mid40s,” Dr. Terry Grossman, founder and medical director of the Grossman Wellness Center in Denver, explained for Everyday Health. “And, by the same token, we will occasionally discover that someone is considerably older than we had guessed. The reason for these discrepancies is often because their biological ages are different than their chronological ages.” The common saying, “you’re as old (or young) as you feel,” rings true. One of the biggest challenges in assessing aging is that it is essentially caused by all of the cumulative experiences that you have throughout your life. For doctors and scientists, it is nearly impossible to determine whether lifestyle, stress, medical history, or other circumstances are individually responsible for many age-related diseases. Ultimately, it is a combination of all these factors that either ages you prematurely or keeps you healthy and prevents illnesses now and in the future. Multiple beneficial lifestyle choices typically have a synergistic effect on your overall health. Here’s a thought: what if, instead of looking at how old we are chronologically, we focused on our attitude and what

we can still accomplish every day? Are you a “Spark” at heart? Have you been physically active all your life and still a “Flame”? Are you a Bridge player who keeps their brain A -“Glow”? Being involved with your family, friends and community, and moving in some way every day will keep you young in body and youthful in spirit. The Birnam Wood Fitness Center offers many options for our members. We have a variety of Precor cardio machines. The Free Motion strength equipment allows full-body functional exercises. Skilled instructors lead our classes if you are interested in the group dynamic. And our wonderful members share positive camaraderie all through the day in our facility. Truly we have both physical and mental benefits to help keep your “Embers” alive.

BRIDGE NEWS Mary Schmidt, Bridge Chairman

BRIDGE GROUP PLANNING FOR A GREAT FUTURE

I have “retired” as Bridge Chair to spend time traveling and playing bridge on some great cruises. It has been a pleasure to have been the Chair under Russell Frazier and Larry Guy as Birnam Wood Presidents, as well as working with General Manager, Ari Kreisler. Together, we have accomplished many goals and continued to make Duplicate Bridge a Club asset that is enjoyed by its’ members. I am pleased to introduce Bob Hollman as the new Bridge Chair. Bob has many credentials in Duplicate Bridge. He has played for over twenty-one years and owns 11,000 Master Points. Bob has played against nearly all of the current top bridge players, including Larry Cohen, who is known world-wide.

TENNIS NEWS

Dan Webster, Director of Tennis

Dear Tennis members, it’s been a hot month. And, still the tennis has been very fun. We’ve just had our Fourth of July Mixer, and the overall winner, with the most games won, was Mrs. Michelle Saltoun. Congratulations to her for her perseverance and success. Please remember to mark down on your calendars the Tennis & Tequila Night for August 9th at 5:30-7. There will be a special dinner on the Terrace, for those who would like to stay following the Tennis. It’s a Western themed dinner. So please take the time to come out and join us! Our Ladies B Team season will begin in September. This years 2018/19 team Captains will be Mrs. Maria Fazio, along with Mrs. Melissa Franklin. And, a very grateful thanks goes out to Mrs. Evlyn Connery and Co-Captian, Mrs. Cathleen Grabowski who shared the responsibility over last seasons competition.

Upcoming Events:

Now think tennis. The key is isolation. You want to isolate one player and completely and not let them help their partner. It’s a simple concept but rarely done well because players want to attack everywhere, instead of in a focused area. Serving Team The serving team has the initial advantage trying to get a power play, especially against the player that is the returner. Way, wayyy too often in doubles players in all positions change direction of the ball without good reason. Changing direction often opens up bad angles when the ball comes back, so if you do change directions, you better make sure you are able to do something with that shot. The serving team can elect to take every ball right back at the returner and keep the Returner’s Partner out of play, or take the battle right at the Returner’s Partner. Because the serving team gets first use of the ball, they have a better chance of establishing the Power Play. Returning Team A smart returning team can also gain control of the Power Play as well. It’s obviously easier initially to isolate the server and keep pounding away at that player, or the Returner can instantly bring the ball at the net player to attack a weakness.

Tennis & Tequila Night: Thursday, August 9th, 5:30-7, for those staying for dinner, please make reservations at the Front Desk. PICKLE BALL: Saturday, September 15th, beginning at 2-4 Men’s/Women’s. Member Guest Doubles: Sat/Sun September 29th & 30th Tennis Tip: Make it unfair. Two-on-one unfair. A Power Play in ice hockey occurs after a fight and someone gets sent off. This creates an uneven balance of players on the ice which is a huge benefit for the team that has more players on the ice. I want you to think of doubles in exactly the same way, and both teams can benefit from it. Also think of this tactic in basic, raw, not tennis terms. In any endeavor, think how hard it is for one person to defeat two people. It just creates such an advantage that it’s almost impossible to overcome.

Thursday, August 9th Tennis at 5:15pm | BBQ at 7pm Join us for a fun evening of Tennis & Tequila. Then enjoy our Thursday Night BBQ. Sign up in the Tennis Shop!

Raising The Bar How the fate of three lives intersected and changed forever on the famed Sunset Strip. By: Kevin “Cevins McCullah – Birnam Wood’s own Mixologist and Bartender What does A-1 Steak Sauce, a Russian immanent, a Hollywood bar and Birnam Wood have in common? This summer’s most refreshing drink: The Moscow Mule. In 1939, John Martin of Heublein, the company that brought you A-1 Steak Sauce, acquired the rights to Smirnoff Vodka for $14,000 (a move that many at the time called “Martin’s Folly because times were so tough). The United States was only six years out of prohibition, the economy was clawing its way out of The Great Depression and the world was going to war. Meanwhile, Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock n’ Bull on the Sunset Strip, was unable to find a steady supply of quality ginger beer here in the United States. He set about making it in house. Unfortunately, despite perfecting his recipe, the spicy drink was just not taking root like it had it England. Flash forward to 1941 and these two men, Martin and Morgan, while having drinks at Cock n’ Bull were lamenting the hardships of having a great product that nobody wanted to buy. In walks Sophie Berezinski, a Russian immigrant sent to the United States to find a buyer for the 2,000 copper mugs made by her father back in Russia. With a common plight, the three began to mix and pour and when the dust had settled, a simple mixture of lime, ginger beer and vodka glimmered inside a frosty copper mug and The Moscow Mule was born. Now seventy seven years later there are many iterations of the classic Moscow Mule; swap the vodka for nearly any other spirit, add berries or peppers or herbs. Like a Mr. Potato Head, this versatile drink can be changed around in a myriad of ways. As the fates would have it, just as Sophie Berezinski once walked into the Cock n’ Bull, her grandson, new Birnam Wood Member J.J. Resnick, has walked through the stone archways of Birnam Wood. Mr. Resnick, who owns the rights to the name The Moscow Mule, supplies the Club with the original fine copper mugs which are currently being served at your Club.
