PRESIDENT’S LETTER By Tim Armour, President

We live in interesting times... maybe too interesting. I can’t say how long all of this will last, no one can. But I can tell you how we will get through it. A statewide shutdown and social distancing separate us but we have to join together as a community to prevail. The kitchen will continue to provide take out meals three times a day for seven days a week. It is a convenient, life-saving service and it is made even better by the wine to-go program. We will also continue to keep the golf course open for as long as we can. It all works if we continue to cooperate together and protect the staff and each other from the Coronavirus. We need to avoid travel, avoid crowds and keep our distance. If we are all careful out of concern for each other, we can sustain this set up for quite a while. In fact, we are exploring the expansion of food service to include providing food basics for delivery/ pick-up to mitigate the need for another trip to the grocery store. So follow the protocol that the staff is following. Wash hands frequently. Wear surgical gloves. Monitor your temperature. Stay away from the Club and others if you feel under the weather. Continue distancing yourself from others. Our goal is to avoid the virus coming to Birnam Wood. If we have an infection incident, it will likely change our food service posture as it is now. So we need everyone to step-up by being thoughtful and careful. Remember that your care prevents infection to not only you and your family but your fellow members and the dedicated staff who are staying on to provide meals, security and help during this unprecedented period. Finally, I want to recognize the spirit and dedication of our staff during this period. They have family and financial concerns of their own but are doing a great job through all this dislocation by helping members and keeping the club going. So when you come in the gate, thank the guard on duty. If you pick up a meal at the entrance to the clubhouse, thank the server bringing out your bag. And if you pass Marty’s crew on the course, tip your hat in appreciation. They all deserve our thanks in this upside down period. Thanks.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, General Manager

Grateful... Thankful... Stay Strong. These are the word that come to mind as I write this article. Grateful & Thankful – I feel so grateful to have such a supportive staff and membership. During this difficult time, my team has really stepped up and supported me. The TO GO program is running strong and we feel good knowing that we are helping our members. My staff and I are grateful that so many are partaking in the program. We are also grateful to see members continuing to play golf. Please everyone... golf, golf, golf! It is one of the only sports available right now, and it is great exercise. It also encourages time with friends while allowing easy social distancing. “Stay Strong” – This is something my mom told me often as a child and it has been a motto of mine for much of my life. To borrow some baseball imagery, life can throw us curve balls and our job is to stay in the batter’s box with our chin up. If we keep swinging, even if some of the balls are fouled off, eventually life will throw us a fastball that we can hit out of the park. My point is that we can do this! I am certain that we, as a country and at Birnam Wood, will prevail. We need to stay strong, wash our hands, sanitize, wear gloves and keep moving forward. Please be reassured that your Club is in good hands and we WILL make it through this difficult time. I also want to take a moment and congratulate Lucy Anderson on her retirement from Birnam Wood. Lucy started at Birnam in 1989. She was influential in maintaining our cottage reservations over the years. She was loved by many members and we are so proud of all her successes and accomplishments at Birnam Wood. We are all very sad to see her go but we are also very excited for her next season. We wish her well on a well-deserved retirement! Moving forward, Kristy Evans will oversee our cottage program with help from Cathy and Brian. If you would like to make a reservation, simply call the club. Moving forward, we will be looking for ways to streamline our reservation system while continuing to provide our members with excellent service. On another note, we are looking at adding a possible Birnam Wood “APP” in the future. This APP would offer multiple features (making reservations, booking an event or golf lesson, requesting golf clubs, ordering TO GO food or even viewing our club roster) all with the click of a button. We will share more information with you soon. In closing, I want to thank you again for your support. Thank you for practicing good hygiene - which has allowed us to continue this TO GO program and keep our golf course open. Please continue to look for e-mail updates, and e-mail or call me if you have any questions or concerns. Remember, you can use out new TO GO e-mail to order food at togo@bwgc.net. Stay strong, Jordan Sweeney, General Manager/COO

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE MANAGER

By Brendan Glesmann, Clubhouse Manager Let me begin by saying thank you to General Manager, Jordan Sweeney for his kind greeting in last month’s “Buzz.” And I would also like to also say thank you to all the members and staff I have had the opportunity to meet during my first, relatively hectic, weeks as Clubhouse Manager. Thank you for your gracious good wishes as I join the team at Birnam Wood. Jordan mentioned that I come to Santa Barbara from Miami where I served for three years as Service Director at Key Biscayne Yacht Club. Prior to that I worked in Naples, FL at the Bonita Bay Club and held seasonal positions at Bald Peak Colony Club on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Being the son of a Private Club General Manager, I had the opportunity to live all over the country including Portland, OR; Davenport, IA; Cape Cod; Decatur, IL; and the Detroit, MI area. Before my odyssey began, I started life in San Francisco and then lived in the Napa area, so I have the blood

I am a firm believer in management by visible, hands-on oversight of department heads and staff. I worked my way up from being a dishwasher at a club in Portland when I was 14 to Director of Service. This happened because I held true to that belief and practiced what I had learned in those 20+ years of hands-on, from the ground up, experience. I promise you prompt attention to your requests and concerns, integrity in my actions and deeds, and approachable visibility. I believe in establishing, and in the case of Birnam Wood, building upon, a true service mindset and practice Management by Walking Around (MBWA). A successful Clubhouse Manager’s job is to be aware of all things Clubhouse, and to accomplish that, I need to be involved in all aspects, every day. I’m confident that your General Manager and Search Committee have made the right choice in bringing me here and I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

FITNESS NEWS

By Joy DuMay & Liz Parrish, Co-Directors YOUR VISION YOUR CHALLENGE I am writing this on March 17th. At this point we are in a place of ever evolving guidance and environmental conditions. As this newsletter is published on April 1st I can only project from this moment within which I am writing. Though your favorite gym may be closed temporarily, hopefully you are managing to stay fit whether you are walking outside, golfing, playing tennis or doing an in-home workout. If you are looking for more motivation or variety consider using an online service. Daily Burn offers personalized Running, Yoga and High Intensity Interval Workouts for every level. World Dance has over 150 videos! If you would like to work on stress, sleep, breaking habits, gratitude and more consider a meditation app such as Calm or Headspace.

As always, your fitness directors are here to help. Whether it’s an encouraging email, text or phone call, a workout from 6 feet away or a remote session using Zoom or FaceTime, etc. know that we stand at the ready to meet your fitness needs. The Fitness Challenge last month was a huge success! 45 members participated and challenged themselves in individual ways as the motto - Your Vision - Your Challenge guided. The month brought obstacles that everyone overcame by being creative and motivated! The Fitness Challenge Kickoff Party on February 27th at the beautiful Bocce courts was one of our best attended events. Music was pumping, wine was flowing and spirits were high. Chef Brandon outdid himself on the fabulous healthy bites and creative juice shots. We look forward to announcing details of our awards party soon!

BRIDGE NEWS

By Robert Hollman, Bridge Chairman As you know, March Chicago bridge was cancelled, so I have no winners to report. The next Chicago night on the schedule is April 15, here’s hoping we are back in action by then. The Thursday duplicate game also was put on hold as of March 16. You will hear from the club when our games are scheduled to resume. Peter Gray’s bridge lessons have been extremely popular, sadly they also are on hold until further notice. Duplicate bridge on Thursday afternoons has been very popular at Birnam Wood with 28 - 40 players participating each week. We can accommodate as many as 52 players, so more players are always welcome. If you need a partner for any regular Thursday game, please call the front desk or email Mary Schmidt – mcschmidt@verizon.net. There is a no host lunch table in the grill reserved for bridge players every Thursday at 11:45. Let’s hope it resumes soon. 14
