PRESIDENT’S LETTER Larry Guy, President
Summer 2018 was buzzing at Birnam Wood as families and friends gathered for parties, weddings and games. There were days when almost every room in the clubhouse, from the Grill to the Event Room, from the 19th Hole to the Fitness Center was filled with Members including golfers, card and game players and fitness Members enjoying the Club. The Terrace was also busy as Members sought shade from the summer sun. Summer Thursday night Bar-BQ’s were always sold out. The Men’s RTJ Invitational was held in July and as usual was entertaining and fun. The annual Lad’s and Lassie’s couples golf tournament is in September. The Mars versus Venus golf tournament between the Men and the Women is in October. Check with the Pro Shop to sign up. This is an exciting event and typically it goes back and forth. I believe the men won last year and are looking forward to the re-match. The 9th Hole Grand Opening was wildly successful with many Members saying it will become our signature hole. Marty Moore, our Greens Superintendent, worked from January 9th to July 25th to open for the RTJ Men’s Tournament. An incredible feat by Marty, his crew and the 9th Hole Committee including Andrew Anthony, Lee Asseo, Ed Brady, Jim Carder, Andy Powell, Ari Kreisler, Mike Goodcase, Mitch Vargas and myself. The New Members-endeavor has seen positive results this summer, particularly with junior memberships on the rise. A diverse Club that attracts Members of various ages is a healthy Club and we are excited to welcome these new members. They can already be seen forging friendships on and off the course and courts. Looking to the future, we can’t wait for the Bocce Ball Court games to begin. The new gathering spot at the Club is sure to produce many fun days and evenings of friendly competition. The plans are being finalized and we are moving forward. Lastly, I want to welcome Jordan Sweeney our new Food & Beverage Director and Assistant General Manager. Jordan came to us from Oakmont Country Club and has already planned some great new activities for Birnam Wood. As always, thanks to all the staff and Ari who bring us all these great events. THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2018, 8:30 A.M.
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager
The positive energy is pumping through Birnam’s veins. The team is motivated, the Members are enthusiastic and the “Birnam Buzz” is starting to spread throughout the community. I just love walking potential new Members through the Club and describing what we see for our future. If you haven’t already done so, tell your friends and loved ones to come join the Birnam family. The seventeen Thursday night Bar BQ’s don’t seem to be enough! Each one has been a party and the themed Bar BQ’s (Father’s Day, Hawaiian, Fiesta and Western) added that extra sizzle to keep the momentum rolling through the summer. And speaking of summer sizzle, just after the grand reopening of the ninth hole, the Robert Trent Jones golf tournament brought Members and their guests three days of entertainment and amusement which I’m told was the best RTJ ever! The Texas and Oklahoma Members sure came with some gusto this summer. They support the Club in so many ways by filling the Cottages and the dining rooms. But mostly, they bring us that special charm that helps make this Club so exceptional. As I write this, we are prepping for “The” Summer Party. Sarah is putting on the final touches and I am absolutely giddy about this one. The Summer Party was dreamt up by your House Committee who are so dedicated to making your experience more fun, more interesting and more lively. Beth Wood and her Committee get my kudos of the month for their support and diligence. We will share pictures and stories in the next newsletter…

Your positive feedback keeps rolling in which is MUSIC TO OUR EARS! With our emphasis on “MORE MUSIC AND MORE FUN” we are selling out every event with a waiting list and Member satisfaction has never been higher! Thank you for your encouragement and kind words! And how about this NEW AND IMPROVED NEWSLETTER!!! Having Ari as “chief photographer” mingling and photographing our Members smiling and enjoying themselves has been a great hit! A big thanks to you Ari!!! The Western Party was a great success with a western band and delicious Bar BQ! The Texans were kicking up their heels bringing an added festive feel to the event! Many of us tried our hand at “trick roping” with our professional roper! Great fun had by all! We are thrilled to have Jordan Sweeney onboard as our new Assistant G.M.! He has already started training his Food and Beverage Managers. The training will continue with an intensive training with our F&B employees. He is passionate about training and everything is measured by how much it will “ENHANCE THE MEMBER EXPERIENCE!” I attended the training and it was one of the best management trainings I’ve ever seen! Jordan’s mantra is “GO BIG OR GO HOME!” He made a presentation to our House Committee about the events, wine training and parties he has created at his previous clubs. We were so excited by his ideas that we were cheering and clapping by the end of his presentation! This young man is ON FIRE and is going to create the kind of BUZZ we want at our club! As I write this column we are busy preparing for the SUPER SIZZLN’ SUMMER PARTY! Chef Brandon is preparing for a delicious surf and turf 3 course dinner, Ari, Jordan and their team are readying their Food and Beverage staff, the band has been arranged, the dance floor and stage is being assembled, the tables are being adorned with lovely arrangements and the lemon drop martini ice luge is in production (purportedly known to improve one’s dancing moves!). It will be a great celebration of an outstanding summer season!

Sommelier’s Corner
By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, Assistant General Manager First off, I’d like to thank everyone for welcoming me back with open arms. It is so refreshing to be back at a club where the members are so happy and eager to have fun! In case we haven’t met yet, my name is Jordan Sweeney and I am the new Assistant General Manager at Birnam Wood Golf Club. I have been in the club industry for over 16 years and have been at several clubs such as North Ranch Country Club, Spanish Hills Country Club and just recently, Oakmont Country Club where I was the Assistant General Manager for the past two years. My passion for hospitality and “fun” continues to grow every day and I am eager to share some of this passion with you. My personal slogan is “Go Big or Go Home,” and again, am very eager to share some ideas and innovation with everyone! On a personal note, I am married to my beautiful wife Katie of 11 years (and counting). We have six beautiful children (no, that’s not a typo). Jack, 9, Faith, 8, Oliver, 6, Sally, 5, Lucy, 3 and Grant, 3 months. On the wine side, I am a certified “level two” sommelier and just recently became a Certified Specialist of Wine (hence the CSW after my name).

September 2018
Speaking of wine (and FUN), on September 7th from 5pm6:30pm we are pleased to announce my first wine tasting event, “Wine Down Friday – Taste of Tuscany.” This is not your ordinary heavy food, heavy wine tasting event. This event will be done in a more traditional format: 3oz pours, and small hors d’oeuvres to pair with the wine. Tuscany is such an elaborate area in the world and quite a few people have had their wines but would love to learn more about them. What’s the grape? How do I read the label? What vintage is good? When should I drink it? Come have a blast and taste wines from the sub-regions of Bolgheri, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and one “hidden gem” from a secret spot. Don’t be intimidated as you do not need to be wine savvy. Come drink and learn all about this amazing region! Please call the front desk to make reservations. The seating is very limited - sign up quickly with the front desk. This wine tasting is only hors d’oeuvres, so if you plan on having dinner here at the club after, reservations are recommended. Please call the front desk and make your reservation.
Sommelier’s Corner Continued the world? It’s things like this that made me want to learn and study wine. Amazing.

GOLF NEWS
By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional Last month I wrote about our Men’s Annual Member-Guest, the Robert Trent Jones Classic. I am happy to report that the event was a huge success. Members and their guests enjoyed three days of food, drink, entertainment... oh, and a golf tournament.
The event concluded with a fabulous awards presentation and delicious dinner. More than 130 members and guests enjoyed the fabulous meal prepared by Chef Brandon Hughes and his staff. They were also entertained by live music performed by Crowd Theory. Thank you to all the staff, who played such an important role in making this event such a success. This could not be done without your hard work and dedication.
The event kicked off on Thursday, July 26, with our Horse Race. We had 40 teams participate in this year’s Horse Race. The teams were split into four flights. The format was pure Scotch (alternate shot) with the four flight winners meeting at the 18th hole for a final’s par three shoot out. Congratulations to our flight winners: Flight 1 – Bowen and Mason Farrell (Valley Club), Flight 2 – Michael McRoskey and John Chulick (Los Angeles CC), Flight 3 – David Cronenbold and Jim John (Yorba Linda CC), and Flight 4 – Bryan de Ponce and Joe Cabe (eClub of San Fransicso). Bowen and Mason Farrell won the 18th hole and were crowned Horse Race Champions. From there, all the players went to the Grill to participate in the first Calcutta.
MEN’S GUEST DAY August 8, 2018 Results
Tournament Committee members, David Cronenbold, Dave Barton, and Andrew Anthony, ran the auction for the next two hours. During this time, Andrew Anthony spoke continuously about the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, and many of the individual players. The entertainment value of this process was priceless. He spared no one from his creative and insightful comments. Finally, day two saw the beginning of the golf tournament. Friday’s format was Aggregate Point Par. Each of the two players accumulated points for their team. At the conclusion of play, those points were converted into a score with relationship to par. The field stayed fairly bunched up after day one. Ten teams shot 59.5 or lower. The leaders after day one were Tim Armour and Russ Mayerfeld (Westmoreland CC) and Bowen and Mason Farrell (Valley Club) with a score of 58.0. So, Saturday was set for a real shoot out. Saturday was Partner Better Ball. This is definitely the day that teams begin to separate themselves from the pack. This year was no different as our eventual champions came from outside the top ten from day 1. Bryan de Ponce and Joe Cabe (eClub of San Francisco) shot 60 on day one and left them two full shots behind the leaders. Their consistent play helped them leap frog those top 10 teams. They were able to match their score from day one (60), and that was good enough for a 1.5 stroke victory over the nearest competitor. Our Gross Champions this year were Chris Gregoire and Chad Beuoy (Santa Barbara GC) with a two day gross score of 130. Look for a complete list of winners in this newsletter. 10

TENNIS NEWS
By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis Hello All, please keep in mind that our Ladies B-Team match play begins this month. Our first home match is September 19th vs Alisal Ranch. This will be the second match, as the first one will be an away match against Cathedral Oaks.
Tennis Tip When Your Partner is being Picked On You have a weak serve and your opponents are picking on your partner. Or you are simply better than your partner and your opponents keep picking on him or her. How can you help your partner so they don’t get picked on?
The full schedule will be posted at the Tennis Shop Office, so please come by and see which matches you might come out to view and to support your Birnam Wood Team!
If you have a weak serve it can be intimidating for your partner to be at the net and, worse yet, there is almost no chance for them to help you out by poaching. It’s very hard to stay aggressive and look to poach. However, there are things you can do to “help” your partner by minimizing the opportunities that you give your opponents to pick on them. What can you do to help? Here are some options.
Thanks to Maria Fazio and Mellissa Franklin our B-Team CoCaptains for leading the charge this season for our Team! In the near future we will be having a ‘wood racket event’ which we’ll be going retro and having an ‘all-white’ dress code. This will be in November so pull out those old rackets and get prepared for this fun Mixer where the classic swings and styles will be on full display! September 2018
1. Play Australian – When your team is positioned in the Australian Formation, almost every time the return is going to go cross-court to the server. It also makes the opponent change the direction of the ball, which creates a level of complexity to the shot. 2. Planned Poaches – Have planned poaches on the serve. Serve to the middle of the serving box. This cuts off the angle on the shot and gives your partner the best opportunity to intercept the ball. It will likely give you a groundstroke to hit and not a ball struck at the net player. 3. Two Back when Serving – If your partner is getting clobbered at the net it’s not an entirely horrible idea to have the net person go back to the baseline and play defense from there. If the server is the better volleyer, they can still serve and volley and play one up one back where the back person is looking to set up the net player for the poach. Since the person getting picked on is now at the baseline, it will be harder for the opponents to pick on them. 4. I-Formation – I don’t recommend this formation on weak serves as it can be very difficult to pop up from the crouch position to hit a ball that is slammed towards you. However, a change of position is sometimes all it takes to disrupt your opponent’s rhythm so it might be worth a try. Consider that if your partner is getting picked on, it is your job to protect your partner by placing him or her in areas of the court where they are less likely to get picked on. You also want to keep the opponents guessing as to where your partner is going so they can’t easily pick on them.
9th HOLE UPDATE
By Marty Moore, Golf Course Superintendent After 6 ½ months of being closed, what a treat it was on July 25th to open the 9th hole for play. As you can see from the cover of the newsletter and from the pictures of the festivities, golfers and non-golfers alike came to support and revel in the triumph as we opened the hole in grand fashion. It all started with the Fire Department saving half of the 9th Green and then the Golf Course Maintenance Department, the 9th Hole Committee and Golf Course Architect Mike Hurdzan all working diligently to ensure that a once massive pile of oozing mud was transformed into a beautiful and challenging golf hole. The task going forward is to continue to amend the soil (previously the mud that filled the pond) to create a favorable growing medium for the turf. It is unlike the soil throughout the rest of the golf course which has received regular aeration and soil amendments for fifty years. This new soil is comprised of very fine, readily compactible soil particles and has little, if any organic material or sand in it. As a result, it has very low porosity which inhibits the movement of air, water and nutrients through the soil. This creates difficult growing conditions for the turf. Our plan to mitigate this condition is to aerate and amend the soil along with supplementing the nutritional needs of the turf. We have just completed one aeration and will plan to do another following the Lady Macbeth tournament in September. The “Preferred Lies” rule will remain in effect until further notice.
