PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Our first priority is a New Member Initiative to attract 15-20 qualified new members by November 1st. Like many private clubs around the country, Birnam has experienced membership attrition. We need your help to accomplish the new membership goals, and will be bringing back the “New Member Committee.” It will be tasked with developing new ideas to promote Birnam Wood and to add well qualified new members by the November 1st deadline. Another Birnam priority is adding a bocce ball court and a fire pit adjacent to the terrace dining area and the Grill. Because our Membership has expressed a high degree of interest for bocce, we conducted a study of other clubs to learn how bocce was received. Overall, clubs that have installed bocce ball courts have found the experience to be very successful and popular with their members. We actually have plans which were developed last year before the fire and debris flow events. The third priority for the remainder of this fiscal year is Management’s goal to continue to maintain a very high level of “membership satisfaction.” Our outstanding staff, our exceptional food and beverage service, and our highly successful golf, tennis, fitness, croquet, and social activities have all contributed to this high level of satisfaction. The Board is very excited about these priorities, all of which are designed to keep Birnam Wood as one of the “premier private clubs” in all of Southern California.” Out on the course, renovation of Hole #9 is well under way. Marty Moore and Mike Hurzdan, our course architect, are managing the renovation. Golfers are sure to enjoy the new features, including several new bunkers and design changes. Our goal is for the 9th Hole to be open by the RTJ Men’s Invitational golf tournament at the end of July. Please feel free to ask Marty, Andrew Anthony or Mike Goodcase about the 9th Hole and its new architectural challenges. The Thursday night barbecues are also back, so grab your fellow members or friends and come out to the Terrace for a fun and fabulous al fresco dining experience. The summer barbecues are a great way to introduce friends and potential members to Birnam Wood too. Remember Birnam Wood is back and in full swing. See you at the Club soon! Larry Guy President

I write this just after completing a perfect Mother’s Day brunch. It wasn’t just the additions of our new signature Mimosa bar or Chef Brandon’s biscuit station or even the Jazz trio, it was the charm of our Members all set against the extraordinary setting of this wonderful Club. Even Mother Nature, on Mother’s Day throwing us some drizzle didn’t put a damper on the festivities. Backed by a tradition of proven hospitality and excellent service, we at Birnam Wood consider it a privilege to provide a wonderful atmosphere for you and your guests. Whether it is for a round of golf, a stay in the Cottages, a lunch or even your company meeting, please feel free to use your Club to accommodate you and yours. As promised, the Cinco de Mayo Golf Tournament and Buffet was a smash hit. I received so many compliments on the food that we will surely be having more Mexican buffets in the near future. Can you smell that? June is here and that means Birnam Wood’s unique smoker is back in action for Thursday Night Barbecues. Signature cocktails, live music, excellent service and simply the best bbq food in town. The Golf Course healed and the Bermuda is ready for another great summer. Have you tried Tennis? If not, get yourself a lesson on our exceptional Clay courts! As Birnam Wood continues to turn-up the volume on the fun, I feel a special cordiality spreading around the Club. Strangers smiling and introducing themselves just to say “hello.” One reason your Club is different is because it isn’t just about the amenities and the history, it is about the people. Summer is just around the corner, and so is the opening of our newly renovated ninth hole. It has been very exciting to see the entire process of the renovation. Dr. Mike Hurdzan was meticulous in making sure the new contours of the fairway would direct excess water, or mud, away from the bordering homes and directly toward the lake. The hole will become more of a strategic Par 5 with higher levels of “risk and reward” for players wishing to approach the hole from that perspective. The sod will be laid in place during the month of June, and the hole should be ready for play by the end of July. When that occurs, that will be another step in our club’s recovery process from the tragic event on January 9. Also, the golf course is fully recovered and back to beautiful condition. This is the perfect opportunity to come out for a round of golf with your Birnam buddies, or invite a guest to play our incredible track. Another good reason to come out is to sharpen up your skills in preparation for the upcoming Member – Guest Tournaments. The Men’s Robert Trent Jones Classic will be contested July 26 -28. The Lady Macbeth’s Challenge will be played September 13 – 14. It is never too early to prepare!! Our Ladies’ Team has one more away match with San Luis Obispo CC. They are currently 2-3 in their first five matches. Our ladies played well throughout the season and deserve commendation for the efforts and success. Good job ladies, and keep up the hard work!
Finally, here are a few reminders about our golf policies and procedures. It is important that all members check in the golf shop before their round of golf. This helps insure accurate billing of any necessary charges. If a group wishes to tee off on any tee other than hole #1, they must receive permission from the golf shop staff. Practice is limited to areas of the club designed for the purpose of practice. Practice is prohibited on the golf course itself. Golf carts may not be driven by any person under the age 16, nor any person without a driver’s license. Golf carts must not be driven on the side slopes of, or onto, tee areas or greens, or onto side slopes of bunkers or hazards. Except when on cart paths, carts and pull carts must not be driven any closer than 15 yards of any green, or closer than as marked and posted.

Summer is upon us, and we will be starting this month with our newly renamed Tequila & Tennis Nights which has been historically called ‘Twilight Tennis’. It will continue to be scheduled for the second Thursday of each month during the season except in July when it will be held on July 19th. The start time will still be 5:30 p.m. and play will go until approximately 7:00 p.m., at which time we will move to the Terrace for dinner and libations! Thank you to all who came out for the Memorial Day Mixer. We hope it was a fun event for each of you. Please remember the clinic(s) schedule that might be best for you: Tuesday, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. is a men’s and ladies clinic, where we prioritize skill levels on a top court and a lower court so it might well be comprised of men and women, so long as the skill sets are similar. On Thursday and Saturday mornings, we have a ladies clinic at 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. where we cover patterns of play, prioritizing point play to learn to better manage the emotional and mental pressure match play presents for each of us. Thursday afternoons there is a Men’s Day event from 2:00 to-3:30 p.m., where the Tennis Pro will play Doubles with the members while providing tactical and some technical advice including some drilling to further develop good habits and encourage good fundamentals. The Returner’s Partner is the one doubles position that gets butchered the most. The fact that every other player on the court can hit the ball before the Returner’s Partner makes it a very difficult position. You want to do something, anything, but the best possible thing to do is understand that you start in neutral. The person on the court that provides the most information for where the Returner’s Partner should move is actually not their own partner – it is the Server’s Partner on the other side of the net. What the Server’s Partner does impacts the Returner’s Partner the most. Of all the problems I see on a doubles court that puts a team in trouble, it’s when the Returner’s Partner crosses the service line when they are actually on defense. It’s like auto-pilot for so many players, voluntarily moving into the lion’s den when they have no right to be there. And to compound the problem, often they are looking back at their partner, the returner, hitting the ball and moving forward at the same time. Wrong movement and wrong person to focus on. It’s the Server’s Partner who you are reacting to. You are last – Last to hit the ball that is. In a lot of ways, you are reacting to what is given to you. That’s just the nature of the beast. Be good at gathering clues in a very short period of time and be ready to move from neutral to either offense or defense as required

2018 BIRNAM WOOD INTERCLUB BRIDGE TOURNAMENT RESULTS : THE TROPHY COMES HOME Chaired by Bob Hollman and Candace Dauphinot, the third annual Birnam Wood Interclub Bridge Tournament was held on April 21, 2018. Competing were the Bridge Clubs of: La Cumbre Golf Club, Little Town Club, Casa Dorinda Retirement Community, Valley Golf Club and Birnam Wood Golf Club. When the Tournament was created, it was with the motto: “Friendship and Fun between the Bridge Clubs of Santa Barbara”. The goal was achieved, with all 56 players enjoying the friendly game, greeting old friends and getting to know new ones.
