PRESIDENT’S LETTER

We are hopeful we have seen the last of the evacuations for this year. Some good news: Lake Cachuma is approximately 45% full and we received 4 inches of rain in March. However, the cost of the water is still high. The Birnam Wood wells cannot be piped into the 9th Hole pond since it is being rebuilt. Once the new liner is installed, we can fill the pond. Our well water presently costs approximately $1.45 while MWD water costs approximately $9.50 per HCF. The 9th Hole is being reconstructed under the watchful eye of our course architect, Mike Hurzden, our Superintendent, Marty Moore, and the 9th Hole Ad Hoc committee. There will be exciting new features and additional bunkers so stay tuned. Members may contact Green Chair, Andrew Anthony, Head Professional, Mike Goodcase, Course Superintendent, Marty Moore, or me with questions.

There is even more good news: restoration and evacuations have not hampered Club plans and activities. Golf Members can look forward to playing in the new Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic on Saturday, May 5. Later in the month, one of the Club’s major tournaments will be held, the Annual Robert McLean Memorial Tournament on May 18 and 19. The Club encourages all men golfers to participate and celebrate being Members of one of the finest Clubs in California. Get some friends and come join the fun.

Inside the Clubhouse, the Fitness Center has been bustling with activity. The Birnam Strong Fitness Challenge, developed by Leslie Robinson’s Fitness Committee and Fitness Directors, Joy DuMay and Liz Parrish, provided 21 days of exercise excitement that culminated in a party of raffles and prizes on Thursday, April 5 – proving, once again, that Fitness at Birnam Wood is Strong!

Elsewhere in the Clubhouse, Beth Wood’s House Committee has been busy lining up a full plate of entertainment for Members. Bingo night is coming back on April 27th. Look for additional speaker nights and many other fun activities in the bulletin. You won’t want to miss the Cinco de Mayo Buffet, the annual Mother’s Day Brunch, the Antique Car Show and Memorial Day BBQ. May is sure to be a fun and active month at the Club. I look forward to seeing you there!

A no-evacuation month helped make a very special April at Birnam Wood. For starters, almost 500 Members and Guests attended our Easter Brunches. 50 Citrus Singers entertained 150 Members and Guests on the Terrace for one of the most magical evenings ever at Birnam Wood! The Birnam-Strong Fitness Party kicked off the Fitness Center Challenge. A bonus Men’s Guest Day had 80 players. Tennis had a first-ever Mediterranean themed Annual Tennis Dinner. Member Ed Mullen played the piano at the Club’s first Sing-Along in the 19th Hole, and how could I forget Bingo? Wow! The vibrancy at your Club is incredible, and believe it or not May’s vivacity is sure to match April. Mark your calendar, call your friends and make reservations for these upcoming events: Mother’s Day Brunch, Cinco de Mayo Mexican Buffet, the Memorial Day BBQ with Car Show and the commencement of our popular Thursday evening Barbecue Buffets.

At the time of this article the Bermuda grass is getting it’s once a year aerification; and by the time you are reading this we are hopeful that the fairways, rough and greens are almost healed. We are still hopeful that the ninth hole will be completed and playable for the annual RTJ tournament. Golf rounds and traffic in the Golf Shop is on the rise and we are excited about the momentum.

We continue to emphasize “fun” as a way of improving the overall membership experience at Birnam Wood. The staff remains committed to serving you, your families and guests at the highest level. Thank you for the fantastic support of your Club.

TWO NEW MEMBERSHIP CATAGORIES JUNIOR GOLF and JUNIOR TENNIS Effective August 1, 2017

Limited to a maximum of 10 new members for each category and available for 12 months: 1. Junior Golf: Under 35 years of age, Initiation fee of $40,000 payable as follows: $5,000 upon acceptance $10,000 due on each of the following birthdays: 35, 40, 45 $5,000 due at age 50 Monthly dues of $350 until age 50. Normal Resident member monthly dues thereafter.

Junior Tennis: Under 35 years of age, Initiation fee of $15,000 payable as follows: $3,000 upon acceptance $1,000 due on each of the following birthdays: 35, 40, 45 $9,000 due at age 50 Monthly dues of $250 until age 50. Normal Tennis member monthly dues thereafter.

If a Junior Tennis member upgrades to Resident/Junior Golf at age 50 or before, the total initiation fee increases to $40,000.

The golf course is healing after the major spring aerification. The work on the 9th hole is well underway. All of this work is being done to insure absolutely wonderful playing conditions throughout the rest of the year. The golf calendar really picks up beginning in May.

The popular Cinco de Mayo Event will be played on Saturday, May 5. The inaugural event last year was a huge success. There will be a drink cart with Mexican appetizers. Margaritas will be served throughout the day and the event will be followed by the Food & Beverages wonderful Fiesta Style buffet with Mariachis playing live music. Groups will be made up of 5 players and there must be at least one player from the opposite sex. Do not miss out!!

There are two great opportunities for the men to play with another member in a fun event. The McLean Member-Member Tournament will be contested on Friday and Saturday, May 18 & 19. This event will consist of a two person scramble on Friday. Following golf will be the two person alternate shot horse race. During this time, cocktails and hors de’ oeuvres will be served. This is a wonderful opportunity for spouses to come and support their significant other as they try and survive the elimination event. Saturday will be partner better ball with a lovely awards dinner with live entertainment for players and spouses.

The second tournament for the men will be a two day Ryder Cup event. Members will make up the two teams and compete in multiple match play formats. There will be pairings parties with plenty of food and drink. Look for more information about this event.

Ladies will play their member-member event (Ladies’ RTJ Challenge Tournament) on Tuesday, May 15. Invite a fellow member of the Women’s Golf association and take your shot at being crowned champions. This will be a partner better ball event.

Men, please look for your invitation to the 51st Annual Robert Trent Jones Classic. They should be emailed out in the middle of May.

Dear Tennis Members, thanks to all who came out for our Annual Tennis Dinner that had to be postponed in December because of the Thomas Fire.

The Tennis Mixer was fun for all. To start off we had a target drill with prizes for targets hit, followed by Doubles. The top two men for the event with the highest scores were Bob Marshall and Greg Downs. The ladies top scorers were Melissa Franklin and Maria Fazio!

The Tennis Dinner held in the 19th Hole was delightful, and a great chance to catch up with our many friends. Thanks to our Chef and staff for providing the occasion with the Mediterranean Flair; and a special thanks to Dani Hahn who provided the amazing and beautiful Flower arrangements for our table settings!

We again, would like to thank the previous Tennis Committee Chairman, Jim Carder and the other Tennis Committee members. They each spent many hours in their effort to provide for the further enjoyment of our Tennis Program, Members and its facilities. Thanks to each of you!

Special recognition for the two people who were the Most Improved Men’s and Women’s players of the year. Our Men’s winner was Joe Fazio, one of our newest members who has been working hard on his game, and our Ladies stand out of the Year is Siri Marshall. She has spent the last year putting herself in challenging positions and has come to better understand timing and shot selection! Congratulations to you both!

Tennis & Tequila Night (formally known as, Twilight Tennis): June 14th, 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Tennis Tip: When Not hitting - You’re Moving For most players in doubles, they don’t do a lot when the focus is not on them. That’s a very bad habit to get into. When you are not hitting the ball, you have got to be doing everything you can to hit the next ball. That’s what teamwork is all about!

This is a two-way street with you and your partner.

Your partner has got to be hitting the ball to a part of the court that makes it easier for you to get involved at the front of the court when the ball comes back over the net.

Movement: There are really two different types of footwork in tennis – interior footwork and exterior footwork.

Interior Footwork: Imagine reaching down to the ground with your racket and drawing a circle all around you. The space inside the drawn circle is your Interior Footwork. This space is full of little adjusting steps and split steps and represents the most important footwork on a tennis court – especially in doubles. During a point, your Interior Footwork has got to be working overtime – especially when you are not hitting the ball! This is the specific footwork I am talking about when you are not hitting the ball.

Keep the feet pumping, stay active, and be ready for the opportunity to get involved in the point.

Exterior Footwork: This is everything outside the circle – the longer running that you do around a tennis court. Exterior footwork is not quite as important for doubles, and is not really relevant for when you are not hitting the ball. It’s just good to understand the two different concepts

The Fitness Directors, Liz and Joy, want to send congratulations to all who participated in our BIRNAM STRONG FITNESS CHALLENGE. Although there were numerous evacuations during our March contest, most of our 42 participants completed 21 workouts in 21 days!

On April 5th we had a fun rewards party where gift certificate prizes focused on supporting the local businesses affected by the Thomas fire and 1-9 Debris Flow, from sandwich shops to restaurants and even a few liquor stores. A special thanks to Leslie Robinson, our creative and tireless Fitness Committee Chair!

Resident Members: George (Bob) and Barbara Smith Bob and Barbara Smith reside in Montecito. He is President of Wallace, Smith Construction and is on the Leadership Board of Bakersfield. They are members of La Cumbre CC, past members of Seven Oaks CC, have 6 grown children and 8 grandchildren.

David and Rachael Stein David and Rachael Stein reside in Montecito. He is Chairman, Stein’s Garden and Home. He has a BA in English from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. They are members of Knowlwood, Milwaukee Country Club and have two children, ages 14 and 16.

Out-of-State Member: George and Carol Porter George and Carol Porter reside in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He is retired VP of 3rd generation family business, Central Cadillac, Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Board member/Chair of Investment Committee-Cleveland and International Piano Competition. He received his BA from Miami University of Ohio. They are past members of Kirtland Country Club, Cleveland and have four grown children.
