Birnam Wood Golf Club FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Ari Kreisler
The word is spreading that Birnam Wood is the fun place to be and the 19th Hole bar is starting to sound like an actual bar! The Chinese Food Nights, another full Men’s Guest Day, the St. Patty’s Day events and March Madness during Happy Hour were just some of the special “buzz” that made March so exciting. March’s doses of lower-intensity rain definitely helped to green-up the slopes and fill our wells. The Club is doing everything possible to reopen immediately after the evacuations so that you, your family and friends have a reliable place to get back to normal. We want you to know that we are here for you. Looking forward into May, I can assure you that the F&B team has some surprises in store for Mother’s Day Brunch, so make your reservation early while there is still room. In June we have some nice Cottages available for your out of town family or friends for an unforgettable combination of privacy and comfort. Call Lucy Anderson for availability at (805) 969-2223 x224. Please keep in mind that Birnam Wood is, and will always be an exclusive Club and joining is by invitation only. New Members provide additional vibrancy and they typically invite their friends and family to join. If you have a friend or family member awaiting that verbal-cue and would like more information on the Membership process, please contact Linda Basydlo at (805) 969-2223 x237.
FATHER’S DAY AT THE COTTAGES ? Of course he will like the tie… but why not celebrate Father’s Day with the family at the Cottages? Call Lucy Anderson for reservations and information. (805) 969-2223 x 224

The recovery process continues on hole 9. The lake has been completely emptied of the mud and debris that was deposited there on January 9. The club had a visit from golf course architect, Mike Hurdzan. Plans have begun to reshape the fairway with hopes of improving the flow of future water and mud flows. The lake was an excellent catch basin for an incredible amount of mud and debris that would have been so much more damaging had the lake not been there. Things will move quickly

committee aims to have the hole ready by the end of July. With all that being said, the golf course, otherwise, could not be in better shape. The greens are absolutely perfect! I would encourage all of you to come out and enjoy our beautiful golf course. Bring a friend or a family member for golf and maybe a libation following your round. The staff here at Birnam Wood is eager to make every visit a fabulous one. The first week of April offers a couple of opportunities to gather at the club for a round of golf with friends. The ladies have their First Tuesday event on Tuesday, April 3. Later that week, the ladies will host their MiniMember Guest Tournament on Friday, April 6. This is always a well-attended event with special prizes for everyone who plays. On Sunday, April 8, couples’ golf kicks off with the first Jump Up of the season. This is an incredible opportunity to invite a guest couple for golf and dinner at your great club. The entry fee is $10 per player and all guest fees are waived. Finally, the ladies will play their second team match of their season on Tuesday, April 10. Speaking of ladies’ team, they hosted Saticoy Country Club for their first match on Thursday, March 8. Finally, it is important for everyone to know that our spring aerification will begin on Wednesday, April 11. Marty and his crew will begin with the putting surfaces that week. After that, he will start the heavy aerification process on the fairways, tees, followed by the rough. This is our once a year aerification, and it is vital for maintaining our fabulous golf course. The complete recovery takes a few weeks. Our first event after that process is the extremely popular Cinco de Mayo event. Be sure to sign up and enjoy golf, wonderful Mexican food, and maybe a Margarita or two.

Dear Members, as we move deeper into the year, and put some distance between us and the Thomas Fire and then the flood of January, we are starting to find our rhythm again, and though the effects are still being felt by so many, we are seeing many of you out on the Tennis Courts again!
Kathy & David Barton - Asia & Andrew Anthony

One of the effects has been that our B-Team will not be able to complete its season, as many of our ladies were impacted by the fire and flood. Thus, the Team Captain has announced that we will be withdrawing from B League for the remainder of the 2017/18 season. Thank you to all for being a part of our Birnam Wood B-Team, and for showing up and having competed to represent themselves, their Teammates and Birnam Wood. As summer comes along and we start our Tennis and Tequila (a.k.a. Twilight Tennis) events, every second Thursday of the month, remember to pencil these events into your schedule. We will be making sure that everyone is challenged and has allot of fun along the way!

Birnam Wood Golf Club us to come back together after the difficult time our community has endured. We hope you can attend. Sunday April 15th Tennis Mixer – 2:00 p.m. Dinner – 5:00 p.m. (Tennis attire or Club casual) Cost $75 Per person. Dinner, Music, Beer and Moscow Mules. Toasts! Roasts! Prizes & Raffle Items! Short Dinner presentations. Tennis Tip: Keep the Ball out of your Opponents Strike Zone Low Slice Backhand What the Slice provides is a safe and accurate shot where the player can keep the ball from getting in the hitting zone of the opponent. What it does not provide is power. This is because the spin of the ball is underspin and if hit too hard will carry beyond the lines. Whereas topspin naturally will bring the ball down into the court the tendency of under-spin is float or carry long. Players who have learned to throw a Frisbee can take this experience to the low backhand slice and learn how to swing with consistency and extended follow through. There is a natural grace to this shot as it requires that the player extend and lift the arms along a perpendicular axis so they are pointing in opposite directions.
