PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Just when we thought Montecito had dodged the Thomas Fire and could safely start the New Year, our community experienced a deadly and destructive storm. Birnam Wood fared better than other Montecito neighborhoods in the early hours of January 9th, but it was not immune to mudslide damage. Several homes, including Peggy’s and mine, were deluged with debris.

In the aftermath of the storm, Birnam Wood Golf Club found itself once again playing a key operations role, serving as a command post for search and rescue. Birnam Wood’s location, open spaces, and facilities provided the necessary resources and venues from which to execute helicopter rescues and to deploy teams searching for survivors. Our Clubhouse also provided lodging for these teams, and gave respite to these hardworking men and women.

Birnam Wood’s management teams worked simultaneously inside the gates to mitigate the slide’s damaging effects to homeowners’ properties and to the 9th fairway. Marty Moore and Mitch Vargas led these efforts to save Club and private property and to clear our roads. We are grateful for their quick response and overtime efforts.

Today, Birnam Wood and Montecito are in various stages of recovery, as are our Members and neighbors. It doesn’t matter if you did not personally experience home damage or family loss, you know someone who did, and you are sadly affected by the devastation to Montecito’s landscape and neighborhoods. This is where Birnam Wood Golf Club plays a healing role in the recovery by offering its Members a place to gather, to share stories, to engage in sport, and to enjoy one another. If you attended Super Bowl Sunday, you know a whole lot of healing was going on in the 19th Hole and there will be many more opportunities in the days ahead.

Behind the disaster scenes Birnam Wood’s staff, board of directors, and committees were doing what they always do – conducting the business of the Club. Despite the fire and mudslide impact on our business, Birnam Wood is financially sound, and possesses the resources and insurance to cover damages and losses. Play has resumed on 17 holes, and all other facilities are in excellent shape.

Our new and experienced General Manager, Ari Kreisler, and his team are challenging themselves to make Birnam Wood better than ever. Look for new attractions, fitness challenges, traditional tournaments, new menus and social events to keep your spirits up while the community recovers.

In closing, I would like to thank the generous outreach of other clubs that provided gathering spots for our Members during the evacuation, whether it was for a meeting, dining, fitness or sport. The kind invitations of Santa Barbara Yacht Club, La Cumbre Country Club, Santa Barbara Club, and Santa Barbara Tennis Club, were greatly appreciated by the Members of Birnam Wood Golf Club. These clubs knew how important it was for Birnam Members to stay in touch and to be with one another.

I am so proud to have been chosen to be your General Manager. Not only am I excited for the opportunity but also because I am honored to be part of a Club that went from serving Members to serving the entire Montecito area. You opened your Clubhouse to the first responders and to the community without reservation and that proves how remarkable the Members of Birnam Wood truly are. Immediately after, you supported the Club by selling out The Grill, The 19th Hole, the Super Bowl Party, and then setting a record for attendance for a Men’s Guest Day and full capacity for the Valentine’s Day Opera Dinner. All this within the first ten days of reopening!

Before the fires and floods, we had already started working on making Birnam Wood a more fun, upbeat and user friendly Club. Since reopening we are also focused on ensuring Birnam Wood is a safe, happy and comforting environment, where Members can gather with their families and rejoin their friends after such a difficult and stressful couple of months.

We want Birnam Wood to be your first choice when considering where to dine, relax, exercise or lodge for yourself or guests; a place you consistently recommend to friends and associates because you know they will enjoy the experience. If ever an occasion arises where the Club doesn’t meet your expectations, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

As we look toward March and wonder if we should be praying for rain or pleading for it to stay away, rest assured that your Birnam Wood is strong and here for you.

After missing the February Bulletin, we are back!! I hope the recovery process for everyone is going smoothly. The events our community has experienced over the last couple of months have been tragic. However, together as a community and a club, we will recover and be stronger than before. This tragedy will test our resiliency and our ability to overcome will make us successful.

I need to start by commending Marty Moore and Mitch Vargas for all of their efforts during the mudslides. They were at the facility for days as the main point people to deal with all the agencies involved in search and rescue, evacuation, and the clean-up process. Their commitment to Birnam Wood Golf Club is tremendous, and they were vital in our recovery starting as quickly as possible. Thank you.

The golf operation re-opened our doors on Friday, January 26 for use of the driving range. Our golf course opened for play with 17 holes on Saturday, January 27. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome members back, help get them back on the golf course, and help in any way we were able. The number of golfers steadily increased over the first week.

After some discussion, the club decided to move forward with the February Men’s Guest and all events thereafter.

That was a great decision. We had 95 players for the event on Wednesday, February 7. The buzz around the facility was positive and all the players enjoyed the beautiful day on the course spending quality time with their friends and fellow members.

The Ladies’ Guest Day on Friday, February 9th was just as much of a success on a smaller scale. The course hosted 28 local ladies, and, they too enjoyed a fabulous day of golf, food and friendship. Thank you to everyone who participated.

We do have a number of events coming up in March and the beginning of April. I encourage everyone to come out play golf and spend time with all of your friends here at Birnam Wood. We will do everything in our power to make your visit enjoyable. We will have our monthly guest days: Men (Wednesday, March 14) and Ladies (Friday, March 9).

Ladies will also host the Spring Swing (Tuesday, March 6), Grandmother’s Tournament (Tuesday, March 27), First Tuesday (April 3), and their Mini-Member Guest (Friday, April 6). On top of that, their team play season begins with a home match versus Saticoy CC on Thursday, March 8.

Couples golf will kick off in March as the revamped St. Patrick’s Tournament will be a mixed event on Saturday, March 17. I am confident all who attend will experience the “Luck of the Irish”! Finally, the first Couples’ Jump Up of the season will take place on Sunday, April 8.

Birnam Wood Golf Club However, what was noticed was that the brown soot that did attach itself to the top-dressing, as well as the base, made it necessary to dry out the courts as completely as possible to have the soot stop binding itself with the moisture to the base, creating the barrier we were concerned with. Once the courts dried out sufficiently and raked numerous times to agitate and further separate the materials we felt confident we could recharge the courts, add more top dressing and get them prepared for play.

Please check in with us should you have any questions going forward about available clinics, lessons or playing opportunities. We will post on our bulletin board at the front of the Tennis Shop our schedule, in so far as we have people to attend our various clinics. We look forward to getting back on the courts with each of you.

Dear Tennis Member(s): We are all still regrouping at this time from the Thomas Fire and the flood in January which did so much damage. As of January 29th, we have opened up all our courts for play. The greatest concern for us was the recovery of the Clay Courts after the fire. The reason for this concern was the type of debris/ash from the fire which might have contained building materials.

The consequence of this could have been to create a barrier within the base of the court so as to prevent water from raising up though the court in a consistent and uniform way. As most of the ash was comprised of organic matter we appear to have been fortunate.

Achieving your Goals How Mentally Strong People Do It 1. They focus on daily objectives. Plan small, achievable goals that you can accomplish each day. At the end of the month, your small successes will add up to a bigger reward.

2. They make it harder to give into temptations.

When you don’t have high-fat sweets in the house, you will have more strength to devote to achieving your weight-loss goals.

3. They make it easier to engage in healthy habits. Set your exercise outfit out the night before so you’re ready to get dressed and moving in the morning.

4. They track their progress. A simple checkmark on the calendar to mark each trip to the gym will give you a sense of accomplishment and help drive you to do more.

5. They plan for obstacles. Realize that the path to fitness is a journey. If an unexpected event hinders your regular exercise plans, go with a relaxing stretch at the end of the day. At least you’ll still be moving. Every minute adds up to a healthier you.

Join The Birnam Strong Fitness Challenge The Birnam Strong Fitness Challenge begins Sunday, March 11. Our focus is “21 in 21”, meaning 21 workouts in 21 days. We challenge you to move for at least 30 minutes each day, whether it is cardio, strength, flexibility, balance or posture training. Our “Kick-off” Cocktail Event is Thursday, March 1st from 4:00-6:00 pm. If you missed it, please contact a Fitness Director to sign up! Our Birnam Strong Fitness Party with games, prizes, awards and more is April 5th from 4:00-6:00 pm.

BRIDGE NEWS There has been much generosity resulting from the Montecito and nearby areas disaster. We read each day of the gifts of time, energy and funds given in hopes to try to restore our communities to some form of “normal”. One of those “gifts” came from the La Cumbre Golf Club in the form of an invitation to all Birnam Wood members to use their facilities for golf, tennis, swimming, dining and bridge. Those who were able, took advantage of the opportunity to “get away” from the problems they were facing at home.

The Birnam Wood Duplicate Bridge Group gathered at La Cumbre for three Fridays in a row to mingle with players from La Cumbre. They all shared lunch, then played Duplicate Bridge, filling the room with pairs who, as different Club Members, cordially enjoyed the game. The star of the games is Director, Jo Lindros, who does all of the paperwork by hand faster than most machines.

Jo has been successfully running and directing Duplicate Bridge at La Cumbre for many years, and we see no end to her hard work and desire to bring to her Club Members a treasured option of enjoyment. The continued weekly attendance of eager players shows the Members’ appreciation for Jo’s efforts. The Bridge Committee of Birnam Wood wants to thank those at La Cumbre Golf Club, the Staff, Bridge Director Jo Lindros, and the Members for their gracious outreach during such a difficult time.

The Duplicate Bridge games at Birnam Wood resumed on February 8, 2018. Lunch begins at 11:45 with Bridge at 12:45. Call the Front Desk at 969-2223 to reserve your pair for Bridge.

He is on the Santa Barbara Board of Realtors, M.L.S. and Santa Barbara Young Professionals. He received a Bachelor of Arts at UCSB. He is a member of Montecito Country Club and Glen Annie Men’s Club.

Clubhouse Member Mark and Carol Glasser Mark and Carol Glasser reside in Houston, Texas and have a home in Montecito. He is retired from trial law in Houston and now has a private practice of mediation and arbitration. He has a B.A. (with honors) from Columbia University and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. They are members of Houston City Club, Texas Club and Houston Metropolitan Club.
