PRESIDENT’S LETTER Larry Guy, President
The New Member Committee (NMC) had a fantastic meeting in September. This Committee plays a vital role in promoting ideas to attract new members to the Birnam Wood family. The Club has added 250 new members over the last ten years but unfortunately has lost 350 members. While those losses are almost exclusively age related, it is key to the operational success of our Club that we begin to keep pace with attrition. I am very proud to be a Birnam Wood member. Being a member of a truly private club is far different than being a member of a club that doesn’t vet its members. I encourage you to reach out to your friends and acquaintances - sometimes you just need to ask! The Club is really buzzing right now and it’s easy to see how your friends and family would appreciate the many benefits of belonging to such an enjoyable and prestigious club. Birnam has several categories of membership including Junior Golf and Junior Tennis, Legacy, Intermediate, Tennis, Clubhouse, Out of State, Non-Resident and Full Resident Golf. Contact Linda Basydlo at the Club for more information and for assistance in helping to find the category that fits your perspective member. This summer was the best in Birnam Wood history. The Cottages were packed, the Summer parties and events were all hits, the golf course was pristine, and the barbecues were all sold-out. The Club gets an extra boost of vitality and spirit when the Oklahoman’s and Texans arrive. They help make Birnam Wood a very special Club. Chef Brandon and his kitchen staff sure deserve some extra accolades for producing such amazing food even during the busiest times. The Lady Macbeth Golf Tournament was held in September and according to the Ladies Golf President, Connie Stein, it was one of the best ever. Connie really runs a smooth event and they honored the First Responders while having an amazing two-day golf tournament. Thanks to our Head Pro, Mike Goodcase, and to Marty Moore for keeping the course in amazing condition this late into the year. And to Ari and Jordan and all the staff who were involved, we really appreciate your efforts. The roads sealing project will be completed by the time this goes to press. The roads look incredible. Mitch Vargas and our security staff deserve kudos as they somehow made the process almost completely painless. As you are now aware, we are holding focus groups, fireside chats and various other meetings to discuss and develop a Strategic Plan. It is an exciting time to be a member at our club. It won’t be long before a clear vision takes shape which will include new facilities and enhanced amenities. The future of Birnam Wood is very bright – better get some good sunglasses.

THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY October 26, 2018, 8:30 A.M.
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Ari Kreisler, General Manager
The Club kept the pedal to the metal and finished the Summer with the fun-meter pegged at 100 mph! “The” Summer Party had Members dancing well into the night and proved this Membership can take a party to the next level. The band, the staff, the food, drinks, all over the top. The bonus barbecue, the 18th of the year, was another summer party with almost 200 Members. I didn’t think anyone was ever going to leave! Mr. Jordan Sweeney’s “Wine Down Friday” cemented Jordan’s celebrity status just weeks into his tenure. I’m still getting lovefilled emails about that event. And Chef Brandon’s food pairings with the Super Tuscans earned him his third standing ovation this year! It’ so exciting to see our award-winning wine program elevated to yet another level. In mid-September we held the “First Responder” themed Lady Macbeth which was two fun filled days of member-guest golf and great food all culminating with an amazing tribute to the Montecito firemen. My favorite part was hanging with the ladies and watching Ms. Wootton, champion golfer and editor of this newsletter, hole-out on the 18th green during the cocktail hour/ chipping contest. I am so proud of the condition of our golf course which is phenomenal, especially considering we are this late into the season. Props to Marty and Will and the crew for ensuring our course is as pristine as ever.
On November 2nd, we are going to have some serious fun on the driving range. We want non-golf and golfing Members to join us as we transform the range into a social scene with a relaxing and enjoyable lounge setting. Even if you have never played golf, come hit some balls or just come for the eats and drinks! With the holiday season right around the corner, remember to use Birnam Wood as your venue for family and office parties. Contact the club’s Catering Director, Monica Dawson, to help you take advantage of the Club’s decorations and amazing food. Also, don’t forget about our Cottages for giving your guests their very own private vacation.

House Committee Corner
By Beth Wood, Chair House Committee Although it’s October I would be remiss not to acknowledge the Super Sizzlin’ Summer Party! To say the party was a BIG HIT would be an understatement! We know our members like to DANCE AND HAVE FUN but this party reached new heights!!! The black and white dance floor was packed every dance! The decor, orchestrated by Sarah Kabuto was so fresh, original and exciting! Chef Brandon’s 3 course dinner was not only delicious but warm when it reached the tables of 206 guests... how does he do it??? Our exceptional staff, well-coordinated by our new Assistant GM, Jordan Sweeney, met our every need! And overseeing it all as he caught photos of members enjoying themselves was Ari! Great job! I was so proud of our club! So WHAT’S IN STORE FOR FALL? We have our California Speaker’s Night series all scheduled. Ricardo Calderon, who heads our House Speaker’s sub-committee, has been working hard to capture some really interesting speakers. Tim Metzinger leads off on Sept 21st with the OWENS VALLEY WATER WAR. What an exciting story about William Mulholland and the Owens Valley Water Wars that brought water to L.A. at the turn of the 20th century! This, of course, enabled our young city to grow into the metropolis it is today! Speaking on the GOLDEN AGE OF SANTA BARBARA ART is Jeremy Tessmer. He will explore the roots of Santa Barbara’s art culture while comparing it to the renaissance in local art and architecture of the last decade. Start thinking about your HALLOWEEN COSTUME! Jordan Sweeney and the House Committee are pulling out all the stops for a Halloween PARTY that is sure to delight us all! Food, prizes and FUN. Even some special areas just for the kids! We want to attract younger members to our club so this will be a great way to feature an event that is inclusive to all! We have many other surprise events in the works including an elegant Billecart-Salmon Champagne and Caviar Night and a very special New Year’s Eve party! We are bringing back the band from last New Year’s Eve (who also played at our 50th Anniversary party last year)! Our members LOVE this band so mark your calendar! We will keep you updated on the many FUN events we are scheduling for fall and holiday season in the newsletter! REMINDER: All our events have been sold out with a waiting list so SIGN UP EARLY for the events you want to attend!

Santa Barbara Then & Now Friday, November 9th at 6pm
Someone once said that “the more things change the more they stay the same.” That certainly reflects on the theme of Santa Barbara Then and Now. Take a journey back for a tour of our city’s past for a comparison of Then as it is replaced by Now which again becomes Then and now we have Now which will soon become Then. This is the only historic slide show which dares to ask (and answer) the question “Must every building in Santa Barbara be a restaurant at least once in its life?” A delicious 3-course dinner with hosted wine will also be served and a copy of “Santa Barbara Then and Now” is included in the cost of admission. $69.95++ Per Person

GOLF NEWS
By Michael Goodcase, Head Golf Professional Wow, What a summer! As I write this September has come and gone, and fall is imminent. Over the fading days of summer our 2018 Lady Macbeth’s Challenge was th held on September 13 & 14th. With a theme of Search and Rescue; paying tribute to our January 9th heroes. The dedicated and meticulous planning of Connie Stein and the rest of the tournament committee made this event a huge success. The tournament was contested for two days on a near flawless golf course thanks to the hard work of Marty Moore and his staff. The competition was fierce, and the weather was beautiful; fitting for the Two Best Balls of the Foursome format. Setting the field ablaze with a two-day net score of 266 are your 2018 Lady Macbeth’s Challenge Champions, Asia Anthony, Anne Goodson, Kathy Barton and Fumie Sato. The honor of 1st Gross goes to the team of Vivienne Bellisario, Susanne Whittman, Jane Habermann and Sue Wilcox with a 2-day gross total of 318. The team of Betsy Atwater, Joan Depree, Priscilla Gaines and Patty Kleveland fought hard but ultimately fell 2 shots shy to finish 2nd net with a score of 268. Rounding out the podium was the 3rd place net team of Barbara Kummer, Cathy Lonegan, Peggy Guy and Nicole McHugh with a net score of 276. As with all events at Birnam Wood Golf Club the 2 days were filled with excellent service and cuisine. Thank you to the talented Executive Chef Brandon Hughes and his staff for all the fantastic meals. Also, a huge thank you to our Front Office staff for their excellent service provided. Congratulations to our winners and well played! Just because summer is fading does not mean our golf calendar is slowing down; October presents several great tournaments and demo days. On October 7th our Men’s Match Play Club Championship kicks off. There will be a gross and net bracket for all to compete. This is a fun self paced event and a great opportunity to meet fellow Birnam Wood golfing members. Round one must be completed by October 20th. Sign ups are in the golf shop. October also hosts a pair of guest days; the first of which is Men’s Guest Day, Wednesday, October 10th at 11:30 Lunch followed by a 12:30 Shotgun start. Ladies’ Guest Day follows Friday, October 12th at 9:00 AM. Grab your golfing friends and turn out for these great events. Space is limited so be sure to contact the golf shop to sign up. October at the range is also hosting two custom fitting days. Ping and Cleveland golf will be at the Driving Range Friday, October 19th 9-2PM. Callaway 10

golf will also be conducting custom fittings the following Friday, October 26th, 10- 2. Come out and get fitted! With the beginning of fall comes the beginning of green aerification; the process to keep our greens healthy and beautiful year-round. Green Aerification begins Monday October 15th and ends Friday October 19th. Please plan accordingly. Our October Golf calendar ends with the Ladies’ Halloween Golf Tournament, Tuesday October 30th at 9AM. Be sure to sign up in the Ladies’ Locker room for this Spooktacular event. Eyeing the future, November 4th is our 18th Annual Mars v. Venus Golf Tournament. This battle of the sexes begins with tee times at 11AM. Turn out and do your gender proud! November also brings Veterans Day; a day to honor and remember all those who served this great country. Why Do You Slice the Ball?
is opening during the swing and you should start from the beginning and go through the progression again.
Have you ever asked yourself the question “Why do I slice the Ball?”
You should not expect to master your new face angle in just one or two practice sessions but once you start fixing that slice, you will not only notice a straighter shot but you will also gain more distance. The next time you are watching professional golf on television, watch the pros on the tee box and see how they too are constantly checking their face angles. Swing corrections, especially major adjustments, take time. Your patience will be rewarded!
By Scott Maier, Birnam Wood Teaching Professional
There are 3 main causes for a slice: 1) The face angle is open to the club path. 2) The club path is too “out-to-in.” 3) Ball contact with the club face is off center. Since face angle is 90% responsible for the direction of the ball flight when swinging a driver, I’m going to focus on face angle. Here’s a drill to fix an open face:

Give yourself time to get comfortable with keeping the face closed on both the back swing and follow through. If you have been slicing the ball for a long time, chances are that you have never felt a closed face. Keep making practice swings without stopping. Then make the same swings hitting balls and checking your face angles. Your goal is a low and left ball flight. If the ball flight is straight or right, then the face

V Start with a PW, 9, or 8-iron. Grip the club so that the face is extremely closed. The club head should be resting at a 45 degree angle facing left for a right handed golfer. Start with a practice swing. Swing the club back until the shaft is parallel to the ground and stop. Check the face to be sure the face is still angled towards the ground (see photos above). If it points to the sky, the face has rotated open and should be corrected. Keep practicing this until the face is angled toward the ground. Now swing the club through impact making sure to stop your follow-through when the shaft is parallel to the ground and pointing towards the target. Again, just like on the backswing, the face at this point should be angled towards the ground. If the face is pointing toward the sky, it is too open.

By Jordan Sweeney, CSW, Assistant General Manager Other than my 8-year-old daughter having an emergency appendectomy, month-two has been great! We did our first ever Wine Down Friday on the 7th of September and it was a huge success! Thank you to the 70 members (and guests) who came out to make it successful. These types of events are a sneak peak of what’s to come. Going BIG is my motto and we are GOING BIG for all events. Speaking of going BIG, we are throwing our first ever “Family Fright Night” Thursday, October 25th. This is a CAN’T miss event. We are transforming the clubhouse into a haunted scene that you will be DYING over. We are also adding a HAUNTED HOUSE. Yes, that’s right, Birnam Wood is adding a haunted house for you and your family to enjoy. Please bring your kids, grandkids (even the older kids and adults will have a blast). There will be a themed out “Pumpkin Pasta Buffet” with all the works. There will be a DJ for the kids in a separate room with games, dancing and FUN! Come and support your club for this horrifying, fun event that everyone will be talking about!

I also have an announcement to make. Eric Salazar is our new Food & Beverage Manager and Ivan Diaz is our new Dining Room Manager. Ari and I are firm believers in promoting from within and we really have some individuals that have shown great dedication and potential. I will be working with both and “reinventing” our training program and hope to enhance your dining experience even more. Please help me by congratulating them on well-deserved promotions. We also have a new Catering Director, Monica Dawson. Monica comes to us from Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. She has been a breath of fresh air and a great addition to our team! Wine Newsy
z
Ok, time for some wine news – We have some spectacular new wines by the glass.
Lloyd Chardonnay, Carneros 2017 – Very big, bold and creamy (Ex Wine maker from Rombauer, similar in style. Will be a member favorite!) Stolpman Syrah, Ballard Canyon, 2016 – Lighter for a Syrah. Local winery out of the heart of Santa Ynez. Will pair well with BBQ style foods, chicken, ribs etc!! Lunae Vermentino, Liguria, Italy, 2017 – This was featured at the Wine Down Friday Tuscany event last Friday and was a member favorite! Very crisp and refreshing. Try this this over a Sauvignon blanc or Pinot Grigio. You’ll love it! Tenuta San Guido “Guidalberto,” Toscana, 2016 – Another big, rustic red featured at last week’s Wine Down Friday event. This wine got 95 points from James Suckling and is a Cab/ Merlot blend. It’s a MUST try for the Old-World palate!! Pair with Lamb, Steak or pork dishes! Zuccardi “Q,” Malbec, Mendoza, 2017 – A delicious, well rounded Malbec from Argentina. This is my TOP PICK for BURGER NIGHT! This wine is silky and has the perfect edge for a burger. Yves Cheron, GSM, “Grand Montmirail,” Gigondas, 2015 – This is a GSM. That means a blend of these three grapes; Grenache, Syrah & Mouvedre. Gigondas is a region in the southern Rhône of France known for amazing blends for a great value. Another great earthy blend round enough for a tasty BURGER! Or even ribs or chicken. Hartford Court, “Lands Edge,” Sonoma Coast, 2014 – A perfect Pinot for the fruit lovers. This one is spot on! Pair with Chef ’s Salmon dishes!!! Terra Nostra, Rose, Corsica, 2017 – Bone dry Rose that’s out of this world! Crisp and snappy and so Refreshing! Henri Bourgeois, “Les Baronnes,” Sancerre, 2017 – Wow, just wow. Such an amazing, bright and vibrant Sauvignon blanc from Sancerre. Tropical style, with great minerality. All of these new wines are available by the glass and also BY THE CASE for an incredible price. Take advantage of our “Rockin Birnam Markup” and get these wines (or any wine available) by the case. Hope you joined the Birnam Wine Club! Cheers, Jordan

TENNIS NEWS
By Dan Webster, Director of Tennis Well what a fun month September was! Again, we had another successful turn out for Pickleball. More than twenty-four people came out to play and watch the doubles play. Thanks to all who did come out to participate and it was great to have some of our Tennis Members out, but also our Golf and Corporate Members! It is our hope to have a Pickleball event once a month, on the third Saturday of the month, from 2-3:30. Please sign up by calling the Tennis Shop or stopping by! Our B-Team season has begun, and the competition has been tough, but, close. Please, check your calendars for Home Matches, and feel free to come out to watch and support our Birnam Wood Team! We have also just finished the Men’s and Ladies Doubles Tournament. We hope everyone had fun and was challenged in the competition. We are scheduled to have a Wood Racket event, which will be a Pro/Amateur event in November (tentatively Sunday the 18th). Please start thinking about who you might invite, and if you would like to play. If you can’t think of someone, let the Tennis Pro’s know, and we’ll make the effort needed to provide you with a partner.

You can choose to be disciplined, wake up early, work hard, put in the extra effort or you can just stay average. Be sure that your choices reflect your goals. If you say that it is your goal to be a top player at the Club or number one on your Team, but your choices are not aligned with your goals, it’s not going to happen. Talent might be the entry ticket, but the attitude and work ethic you bring everyday are the traits that will make you great. When you strive for excellence, there will be people who will attempt to hold you back. Don’t compromise your standards to accommodate them. Mediocrity exists inside your comfort zone. To break away from mediocrity, you’ll need to get outside of your comfort zone, to look and act differently from those you leave behind. Don’t look back! Surround yourself with like-minded people who share your high standards and values. Don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes. Only through trying and failing and trying again can you get better. Remember that excellence is not for everyone. It is only for those who are willing to give their very best.

BRIDGE NEWS
By Robert Hollman, Bridge Chairman Bridge is thriving at Birnam Wood. The bridge committee hosted a seminar on August 23 – Introduction to Duplicate Bridge – which was attended by 30 club members who were eager to learn why duplicate bridge is more fun than social or “Chicago” bridge. The seminar was followed by a complimentary lunch also hosted by the bridge committee and a number of the attendees stayed for the regular Thursday 1:00 duplicate game. The regular Thursday game has been averaging 24 – 30 players and we had 40 on August 23, so it was great to see so many from the seminar staying to play. The room can accommodate as many as 52 players and we hope to see that many playing on Thursdays as things return to normal in Montecito. If you need a partner for any regular Thursday game please call the front desk or email Mary Schmidt - mc.schmidt@ verizon.net.

The ability to count high card points and suit distribution in all four hands is fundamental to becoming a better player, so this is a very important lesson. Candace Dauphinot and I will be available to assist Peter during the lesson. The other five lessons will be on November 8,15,23 and December 6,13. Peter is an accomplished player and teacher, so we are fortunate he is willing to offer these lessons free of charge. Please sign up at the front desk. Attendees are encouraged to stay for the regular duplicate game at 1:00. If you do not have a partner, call the front desk or email Mary Schmidt and the committee will attempt to find one for you.
