To all incoming freshmen interested in trying out for sports, don’t sweat it. Come to tryouts prepared and coaches will put you on a team suited to your abilities. Try your best and don’t underestimate your skills. Freshman year is the year to try new things and find out what you’re good at.

HOMECOMING Homecoming is the first dance of the year and is attended by students of all grades. The guys ask the girls – it is usually a “friendtype” of dance. Girls typically wear cocktail length dresses and guys wear suits. Groups go out to dinner together.

It is the Saturday after the Homecoming football game.

SWEETHEART Sweetheart is the Valentine Dance in February. Unlike Homecoming, the girls ask QUICK TIPS the guys. Usually people Preparation for dances go as couples. Frequently asked questions by incoming freshmen

How is the school organized?

The first floor has all English classes. The room numbers are in the 100s. The second floor contains foreign language classes and journalism classes with numbers in the 200s.

The 300 room numbers are on the third floor with social studies and math classes. The science classes are dispersed on all three levels. Gym classes are in the gym area, near the commons, with room numbers in the 400s. Art classes are in the art wing with room numbers in the 600s.

What is block scheduling?

On Mondays and Wednesdays, it is odd block, which is hours one, three, five and seven. On Wednesdays, Advisory is held after fifth block. Tuesdays and Thursdays are even block, but they are slightly different. On Tuesdays after sixth block, there is JAG. On Thursdays there is late arrival, so after fourth block, there is Academic Check Up. On Fridays there are hours one through seven.

What are JAG, Advisory, and Academic check up?

JAG is a school-wide study hall on Tuesday after sixth block.

Students can move to different teachers to redo assignments and ask questions. Advisory for freshman is a class after fifth block on Wednesdays where upperclassmen mentors help guide the class through freshman year. Academic Check Up is after fourth block on Thursday. It is similar to JAG because it gives students time to work on assignments, but students must stay in their assigned class.

How do the bells work?

In the morning there’s a seven minute bell and a two minute warning bell for students to get to class. In between each class there is a six minute passing period and a two minute warning bell to remind you to get to class.

How does lunch work?

The school is divided into four different lunches, according to classes. On odd block days and all block days, students eat with their fifth block class. On Tuesdays students eat with their sixth block class. On Thursdays students eat with their fourth block class.

Is it cool to get involved in after school activities?

One of the regrets of the upperclassman is not getting involved in the school as a freshman. Joining a sport or club is a great way to meet new people and support the school. There are all types of clubs to join, but if someone cannot find a club that interests them, then they can start their own club with a few members and a sponsor.

Should I dress up for spirit days?

A tradition at our school is going over the top for spirit days.

It may feel silly at first, but once you walk into school you will fit right in. Spirit weeks are the weeks before the Homecoming Dance and the Sweetheart Dance. Many sporting events also have themes for different games.

Do freshmen go to dances?

Yes, freshmen are encouraged to go to school dances. The pizza dances are a fun casual dance at the beginning of the year. The first pizza dance is on Aug. 26. Homecoming is in the fall, and typically the guy asks the girl. Sweetheart is in the winter, and generally the girl asks the guy.

Do freshmen go to sporting events?

Student sections are full at most sporting events at BV West. It is a very spirited school. Many games have their own themes, such as a black out, toga night, or country night.

where do i go for academic or personal questions?

Mentors are a great resource for freshmen students.

There are several upperclassmen mentors in each freshmen Advisory class. They are there to help with homework or provide advice. Counselors are always avaliable for more serious questions or help when needed.
