The Chorale’s 55th Season follows the progression of the folksong from the homeland to the new land while also encapsulating the human experience and journey through song.

7pm Oct 21

Songs from the Homeland highl highlights a variety of folk songs familiar to people of all ages. It begins with Joseph Martin’s, The Awakening, and its powerful text, I dreamed a dream, a silent dream of a land not far away. This sets the stage for a musical review of familiar folk songs from the homeland that, musically, bring us to our new home, setting the stage for our March concert, Songs of the Traveler.

What Sweeter Music Can We Bring is designed to get you and your family in the Christmas spirit! The first half brings some of your favorite traditional and non-traditional Christmas pieces. The second half will feature a guest narrator reading one of your favorite Christmas stories, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, with traditional sing-along Christmas carols sprinkled throughout. Be sure to stick around for the end of the concert with your young ones because we may have a guest visitor all the way from the North Pole!

Songs of the Traveler is a continuation of our first concert and focuses more on the folk songs of America through the lens of Randall Thompson and Aaron Copland. The theme of journey and travel is continued but now through the vantage point of one who has arrived in America. A guest artist will perform the Ralph Vaughan Williams setting of Songs of the Traveler.

The Road Home focuses on the conclusion of one’s journey from the viewpoint of arriving at their new-found home all the way from the homeland, but also the end of one’s journey here on earth. This concept is epitomized through Schubert’s Mass in G and Faure’s Requiem. And we end the season with the beautiful setting of Stephen Paulus’s, The Road Home, the perfect piece to highlight the duality of two different journeys coming to a close.

Director 27 YEARS

Marcelo Bussiki is the music director/conductor of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs at Blinn College. He has had a passion for music since his early years. Born in Cuiaba, capital of Mato Grosso State in Brazil, Bussiki left home at age 14 to study at the Brazilian Conservatory of Music in Rio de Janeiro. He continued his conducting studies under Maestro Roberto Duarte at Rio de Janeiro Federal University. Upon graduation, he Marcelo Bussiki was named music director of the orchestra of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, a position he held for six years. Bussiki was awarded knighthood in the Ordem de Merito de Mato Grosso in recognition of his pioneering work in cultural expansion and musical education. He received the title of Oficial, the highest honor that the executive power can confer upon an artist in Brazil. Bussiki came to the United States in 1992 under a scholarship from the Brazilian government and studied at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. From 1994-1996, he directed that university’s New Music Ensemble, developing an extensive repertoire of modern and contemporary music. He received a doctorate of musical arts in conducting from the University of Houston in 1998. During his tenure with the Brazos Valley Symphony, Bussiki has been in demand as a guest conductor in Texas and out of state. In September, 2002, he returned to his native Brazil under sponsorship from the Brazilian National Bank in Rio de Janeiro to conduct 15 performances of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Viva la Mama, as well as other symphony concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. In October 2001, he conducted a premiere performance of the Organ Concerto by vanguard U. S. composer Lou Harrison, featuring organist John Walker and the Carnegie-Mellon Percussion Ensemble, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Bussiki conducts several concerts a year at the International Festival Institute at Round Top, Texas. He was conductor for the International Guitar Festival in 2005, 2006, and again in 2016. In 2014, Bussiki was awarded the “Artist of the Year” honor by The Arts Council. OUTSTANDING LIVE PERFORMANCES | 9

Bethany Clearfield

With a voice the Chicago Tribune called “gloriously pealing,” and the Chicago Classical Review declared “gleaming shafts of hopeful light,’’ international soprano Bethany Clearfield strives to create magic with every performance.

Clearfield earned a jazz studies degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago, followed by a masters in voice from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland. She proudly claims over a decade of experience performing as a soloist and ensemble member of the Grant Park Chorus, Chicago Symphony Chorus, Music of the Baroque, William Ferris Chorale, and Chicago a cappella, and is currently on the professional roster at the American Cathedral in Paris and Ensemble Créations in Marseille. She is featured on numerous choral recordings as well as new music projects, such as John Elmquist’s HardArt Groop, and composes original music for the band Outertown. Clearfield has been most recently featured with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to glowing reviews. In Reena Esmail’s See Me, a companion piece to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, the Chicago Tribune declared her solo performance “nothing short of magical.” She has also recently been featured as soloist with the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, in Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the Open Chamber Orchestra in Paris, in Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 Lobgesang at the esteemed Saint-Eustache, and at 360 Music Factory in Paris and Studio Garlaban in Marseille performing her original compositions. Passionate about sharing the joy of singing with all, Bethany Clearfield served as an educator with Music of the Baroque’s Strong Voices program and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Lullaby Project in cooperation with Carnegie Hall. In 2017, Julia Rhoads and Hubbard Street Dance invited Clearfield to collaborate as a vocal coach and arranger for a new work featuring a live soundtrack performed by the dancers themselves. Following this success, Rhoads and Clearfield further developed the work along with Lucky Plush Productions, culminating in the premier of the award-winning Rink Life in November 2019 at Steppenwolf Theater, which toured the United States for the next three years. During the 2021-22 season, Clearfield was awarded Lucky Plush’s Embodied Research grant to develop a recording and composition project centered on the concept of breath. Clearfield is delighted to rejoin the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Bussiki, following a performance of Lutosławski’s Chantefleurs et Chantefables during the 2022-23 season. She currently resides in Marseille, France where she can most often be found writing music and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. OUTSTANDING LIVE PERFORMANCES | 13

Bronwen Forbay

Hailed by Opera Magazine as “At once powerful, radiant, timbrally beautiful, and balanced throughout the range, her soprano is that of a singer at the top of her game”, Durban-born South African Fulbrighter DR. BRONWEN FORBAY’S operatic successes include critically acclaimed performances of Mozart’s Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute) with the Wolf Trap Opera Company, Eugene Opera, and Tulsa Opera. Other celebrated roles include Orasia, Queen of Thrace (U. S. premier of Telemann’s Orpheus), Adina (L’Elisir d’amore), Velmyra (Wading Home) by Mary Alice Rich, Violetta (La Traviata), and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor with the Cape Town Opera. Concert appearances as a soloist include standard and modern works including Bach’s B Minor Mass (Santa Fe), Handel’s Creation (Cincinnati), Mozart’s Requiem (on tour in Northern Italy: Venice, Verona, Vicenza), Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Dallas), Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis (Tulsa), Miller’s ReWind Cantata for Voice, Tape, and Testimony (Royal Festival Hall, London), and Mnomiya’s Ingqai sivele we-Africa (Durban). An avid recitalist, Forbay has performed throughout South Africa, the US, and Europe at notable venues including the American Cathedral in Paris (France) Les Arts Georges V recital series, and with Dr. Stephen Pierce (piano) at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). Successful in several voice competitions, Forbay was awarded the 2007 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Music (a prestigious national South African award whose recipients include Pretty Yende). Selected for the renowned NATS Intern Program in 2013, Forbay has presented at DFW NATS, TEXOMA NATS, National NATS, CMS National Conferences, and ICVT. She is a highly sought-after adjudicator and clinician and frequently serves in this capacity for the Schmidt Vocal Arts Organization. An Associate Professor of Voice at Furman University (Greenville, SC, USA), Dr. Forbay served on faculty at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (Durban, South Africa) while fulfilling her Fulbright two-year homestay requirement. She has taught at the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor (Belton, TX), Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, TX), and the McLennan Community College (Waco, TX). Dr. Forbay holds degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Manhattan School of Music, Southern Methodist University, University of Cincinnati, CCM, and is the first South African woman to earn a DMA in Voice Performance. She served as TMTA Voice Contest Chair from 2018-2021, is a member of the NATS International Advisory Committee, is President-elect of Furman’s Black Faculty and Staff Association, and is the Treasurer of the South Africa Chapter, NATS. Forbay’s research interest focuses on illuminating DEI in Afrikaans Art Song Literature and exposing it to a wider audience. Two articles on Afrikaans Lyric Diction co-authored with colleague Dr. Christian Bester were published in the NATS Journal of Singing in 2022. Galina Ivannikova

“As Ulrica, Galina Ivannikova displayed a glorious voice reminiscent of the Golden Age Tradition. In “Re dell’abisso”, Ivannikova had such a powerfully, even-toned mezzo voice, that the listener’s only regret was that she sang just one scene. “ Bruce Michael Gelbert of NY Art Ukrainian-American dramatic mezzo-soprano Galina Ivannikova is hailed by critics alike for her rich, lustrous voice aptly gusty, and her emotion pitch-perfect. She possesses a big glorious Verdi voice of Golden Age tradition.”

The 2022-2023 season had Ivannikova portrayed the roles of Madam Flora from Menotti’s The Medium and La Frugola in Puccini’s Il Tabarro with Regina Opera, NY. She successfully performed as a soloist of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Brazos Valey Symphony orchestra, TX, as well as many concerts in NYC area. While keeping busy during the pandemic, she performed online concerts, judged competitions, and recorded several marks by modern composers. The 2019-2020 season kicked off successfully with performances as Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde with Connecticut Lyric Opera, as well as an acclaimed aria concert with Nothern Art Center, Yellowknife, NT, Canada. The 2018-2019 season had Ivannikova portraying the roles of Amneris in Verdi’s Aida with Gateway Classical Opera Society , Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo with Connecticut Lyric Opera, the Mezzo Soloist in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, Waltraute in Wagner’s Götterdämmerung with NYWOG, Azucena in Verdi’s Il Trovatore and The Witch in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel with Regina Opera, Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera with Amore Opera, plus numerous concert appearances. The 2017-2018 season included engagements as Carmen in Bize’s Carmen with Lyric Theater D’Europa, Leonora in Donizetti’s La Favorite with NYWSO, and Amneris with both Connecticut Lyric Opera and West Side Opera Society. In 2016-2017, Ivannikova appeared as La Cieca in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda with NJ Verismo Opera, Amneris with Lyric Theater D’Europa, Innkeeper/Marina Mnishek in Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov with Commonwealth Opera Theater of Boston, or wich London Opera Magazine said, “Ivannikova has an imposing instrument and passion!” In previous seasons, she brought critical acclaim to the roles of Amneris in Verdi’s Aida, Azucena in Verdi’s Il Trovatore, Ulrica in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Marta in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta with VP NYC, Principessa in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, Nickklasusse/ Muse in Tales of Hoffmann, the title role in Bize’s Carmen, Erda in Wagner’s Die Walküre, Olga/Nurse/Larina in Tchaikovsky’s Eugeny Onegin, the Mezzo Soloist in the Verdi Requiem, Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Fricka in Wagners’ Die Walküre. Thomas Gerber

Thomas Gerber is the Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Texas A&M University where he conducts the Women’s Chorus and Century Singers.

Originally from Austin, Minnesota, Thomas Gerber serves as the Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Texas A&M University, where he is honored to direct the Century Singers and Women’s Chorus. Before arriving at Texas A&M, he served as Music Director at Bishop England High School, where he conducted the Mixed Choir, Chorale, and Chamber Choir. During his tenure, the choirs of Bishop England made their Carnegie Hall debut, performing Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna and the Carnegie Hall premiere of William Menefields, Prism. In 2016 he was the recipient of the Outstanding New Faculty Member award. During his time at Bishop England, he also taught music history and music theory and was music director for the annual Spring musicals. Gerber served as the Associate Music Director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus from 2018-2020. During this time, he had the pleasure of preparing annual performances of Handel’s Messiah. Additionally, in 2019 he prepared the chorus for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban™ in collaboration with CineConcerts and their Harry Potter™ Film Concert Series.

Gerber received his Bachelor of Arts in Choral and Instrumental Music Education from Luther College in Decorah, IA, under Dr. Allen Hightower and Dr. Edwin Andereck, where he was a section leader of the internationally acclaimed Nordic Choir. Gerber received his Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati CollegeConservatory of Music in Cincinnati, OH, under the tutelage of Dr. Earl Rivers and Dr. Brett Scott while also studying voice with David Adams. While at CCM, Gerber served as a graduate research assistant to Dr. Eva Floyd and also taught the undergraduate voice methods class and voice lessons. Currently, he is finishing up his DMA in Choral Conducting with a related field in Vocal Pedagogy at the University of North Texas, Denton, TX, where he is a student of Dr. Allen Hightower, Dr. Kristina MacMullen, and Dr. Stephen Austin. Gerber has an extensive background in outdoor ministry and enjoys working with students of all ages and abilities. He has a strong desire to make music available to those who might not have the opportunity or the means. He is passionate about getting as many people involved in a choir as possible, all while creating a sense of community through musical creation. When he’s not performing, Tom can be found jogging or walking his dog, Chloe, and enjoying the outdoors! 16 | YOUR PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA

Weichet nur betrübte Schatten BWV 202 “Wedding Cantata”

Johann Sebastian Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was born in Germany on March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Germany, and he died in Leipzig, Germany on July 28, 1750. The date of the first performance of his “Wedding Cantata” is uncertain; recent scholarship places it sometime before 1717, while Bach was still working in Weimar. Of the hundreds of cantatas that Bach wrote, only a handful are secular in nature. This one was written to celebrate a wedding, perhaps for some of Bach’s friends or relatives. (The idea that it was for his own second wedding to Anna Magdalena in 1721 is sometimes circulated; this supposes a later date of composition, during Bach’s employment in Cöthen.) The cantata is scored for soprano solo, oboe, strings, and continuo, enabling it to be performed in an intimate setting. It consists of nine sections of alternating arias and recitatives. The text, sometimes attributed to Salomon Franck (1659-1725), the court poet at Weimar, describes the coming of spring driving away the shadow of winter, and bringing in the love shared by the happy couple. The tempos and instrumental configurations in the aria accentuate the mood of the texts.

Les Illuminations Benjamin Britten

Benjamin Britten was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England on November 22, 1913, and he died in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England on December 4, 1976. He composed his song cycle, Les Illuminations, in 1939, for the soprano Sophie Wyss, who was the soloist in its premiere on January 30, 1940 in Aeolian Hall, London. Wyss was a Swiss singer who settled in England; she and Britten were friends. The texts are taken from an eponymous collection by the talented but troubled French poet, Artur Rimbaud (1854-1891), with whom Britten sensed a common bond. The cycle begins with a sentence from the eighth number, “Parade”: “I alone hold the key to this savage parade.” This utterance reappears as the “Interlude,” and in “Parade” itself, thus serving as a “key” to the entire work. The music is scored for string orchestra; Britten uses many unusual techniques in the strings to imitate other instruments and sounds. Though originally intended for soprano, Les Illuminations is sometimes performed by a tenor. In fact, Britten’s partner, Peter Pears, made a recording of it.

Gloria in D major, RV 589 Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy, in 1678 and he died in Vienna, Austria in 1741. He composed this setting of the Gloria around 1715 for the Ospedale della Pieta, an orphanage for girls in Venice, where he was music director and composer in residence for many years. The girls received musical training and became accomplished musicians; some of them even adopted the names of their instruments as surnames. “The red-headed priest” (as Vivaldi was known) gave this sacred Latin text its full due in line the Baroque ideas of “affect” (or emotional impact on listeners) and of dramatic contrast. The very opening notes establish a joyful and majestic “affect.” Yet in the next movement, “Et in terra pax,” Vivaldi uses the minor mode and a constant eighthnote pulse to propel a build-up of dissonance as a plea for peace in world so lacking in it. One can imagine two young ladies from the Ospedale singing the sprightly “Laudamus te.” The gentle pastoral “Domine Deus, rex coelestis’, for soprano and oboe (or violin), portrays the King of Heaven as a shepherd. A dance-like dotted rhythm animates “Domine Fili unigenite”, whereas “Domine Deus, Agnus Dei’’ for alto solo and chorus introduces a more penitential “affect”. The opening theme returns in “Quoniam tu solus Sanctus,” providing an appropriate segue to the final chorus, an impressive double fugue, that is, a fugue based on two themes. Interestingly, this movement is Vivaldi’s adaptation of a fugue from a Gloria by Giovanni Maria Ruggeri, a little-known Italian composer.
