Concert Season

The Chorale’s 55th Season follows the progression of the folksong from the homeland to the new land while also encapsulating the human experience and journey through song.

7pm Oct 21

Songs from the Homeland highl highlights a variety of folk songs familiar to people of all ages. It begins with Joseph Martin’s, The Awakening, and its powerful text, I dreamed a dream, a silent dream of a land not far away. This sets the stage for a musical review of familiar folk songs from the homeland that, musically, bring us to our new home, setting the stage for our March concert, Songs of the Traveler.

5pm Dec 9

What Sweeter Music Can We Bring is designed to get you and your family in the Christmas spirit! The first half brings some of your favorite traditional and non-traditional Christmas pieces. The second half will feature a guest narrator reading one of your favorite Christmas stories, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, with traditional sing-along Christmas carols sprinkled throughout. Be sure to stick around for the end of the concert with your young ones because we may have a guest visitor all the way from the North Pole!

7pm Feb 24

Songs of the Traveler is a continuation of our first concert and focuses more on the folk songs of America through the lens of Randall Thompson and Aaron Copland. The theme of journey and travel is continued but now through the vantage point of one who has arrived in America. A guest artist will perform the Ralph Vaughan Williams setting of Songs of the Traveler.

5pm Apr 28

The Road Home focuses on the conclusion of one’s journey from the viewpoint of arriving at their new-found home all the way from the homeland, but also the end of one’s journey here on earth. This concept is epitomized through Schubert’s Mass in G and Faure’s Requiem. And we end the season with the beautiful setting of Stephen Paulus’s, The Road Home, the perfect piece to highlight the duality of two different journeys coming to a close.

PROGRAM

Notes

If any musical instrument conjures up an image of Spain, it is the guitar. Tonight’s concert includes not one, but two guitars, in an unusual concerto-suite based on a Renaissance madrigal, plus excerpts of ballet and opera combining the musical styles of Spain and France. El sombrero de tres picos (“The Three-Cornered Hat”), Suite No.1

Manuel de Falla

I. Mediodía (Afternoon) II. Danza de la molinera (Dance of the Miller’s Wife) III. El Corregidor (The Magistrate) IV. Las uvas (The grapes)

Manuel de Falla y Matheu was born in Cádiz. Spain, on November 23, 1876, and he died on November 14, 1946, in Alta Gracia, Argentina (his remains were later returned to Cádiz). The Ballets Russes under the general direction of Sergei Diaghilev premiered Falla’s ballet, El sombrero de tres picos, premiered at the Alhambra Theatre in London on July 22, 1919; Ernest Ansermet conducted the orchestra.

Throughout his career, Falla composed in a distinctly Spanish style; he had been encouraged to do so from his youthful studies with the musicologist, Felipe Pedrell. From 1907 to 1914 the young composer and pianist lived in Paris; there, he befriended (among others) Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, and Igor Stravinsky. Thus, his music contains elements of Impressionism and, especially, Neo-classicism. He settled in Madrid in 1914, where he composed several short theatrical works. One of these was a pantomime, El corregidor y la molinera (The Magistrate and the Miller’s Wife), based on a novel by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. (The story centers around a jealous miller, his beautiful wife, and a loutish and lecherous magistrate who constantly-but unsuccessfully--pursues the miller’s wife.) At that time, Sergei Diaghilev and his innovative ballet company, the 18 | YOUR PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRA

Ballets Russes were touring Spain. Stravinsky introduced Falla to Diaghilev, who commissioned the Spanish composer to adapt his pantomime into a ballet that would include traditional Spanish dance. Léonide Massime was the choreographer and lead male dancer, and Pablo Picasso designed the costumes and sets. Concierto Madrigal for Two Guitars

Joaquin Rodrigo

I. Fanfare II. Madrigal III. Entrada IV. Pastorcico tú que vienes, pastorcico tú que vas V. Girardilla VI. Pastoral VII. Fandango VIII. Arietta IX. Zapateado X. Caccia a la española

Joaquín Rodrigo Vidre was born on November 22, 1901, in Sagunto, Valencia, Spain, and he died in Madrid on July 6, 1999. His Concierto Madrigal, composed in 1966, was first performed on July 30, 1967, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, by soloists Ángel and Pepe Romero, with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra conducted by Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos. The composer was in attendance.

Although it preserves the contrast between soloist and orchestra typical of a concerto, the Concierto Madrigal is structured more like a suite in ten short movements, or perhaps a theme with ten variations, rather than the usual three- or four-movement concerto. The work opens with a Fanfare, in which one guitar is the rhythm instrument and the other, the melody. The main theme immediately follows; it is a 16th-century madrigal, “O felici occhi miei” (“O happy eyes of mine,” in Italian) by Jacques Arcadelt. This minormode melody is then arranged in various ways among the movements, requiring great virtuosity from the guitarists. OUTSTANDING LIVE PERFORMANCES | 19

PROGRAM

Notes

The names of the movements indicate their poetic aspects. “Pastorcico, tú que vienes, Pastorcico, tú que vas” (“Little shepherd, you who come, you who go”) is a villancico, a form of Spanish poetry and song originating during the Renaissance period and usually associated with Advent and Christmas. The Fandango and Zapateado are dance forms, while the “Caccia a la española”—a hunt or chase, so to speak—brings the Concierto to a joyful ending. Joaquín Rodrigo was a virtuoso pianist, and he did not play the guitar, yet his guitar compositions are staples in the repertoire. A bout of diphtheria at the age of three left Rodrigo blind; as a result, he wrote his music in Braille, and had others—including his longtime teacher and friend, Rafael Ibañez, and especially his beloved wife, Victoria— transcribe it for publication. He received part of his musical training in Spain and part of it in France. Manuel de Falla was another friend who promoted Rodrigo’s music. Rodrigo received many honors, including the hereditary title of Marqués de los Jardines de Aranjuez, and the Prince of Asturias Prize, Spain’s greatest distinction.

Chanson du Toréador: Act II, Introduction, and aria (Toreador Song) La Garde Montante: Act I: (The Arrival of the Guards) Danse Bohème: Act II, Gypsy Dance

Georges Alexandre César Léopold Bizet was born in Paris, France on October 25, 1838, and he died there on June 3, 1875, only three months after the premiere of his opera, Carmen, at the Opéra Comique on March 3, 1875. His colleague and friend, New Orleans-born Ernest Guiraud (18371892) arranged two orchestral suites from the opera in 1882 and 1887, respectively. Carmen is one of the world’s favorite operas—an opera being a drama that is sung rather than spoken. Even people who think they dislike opera will probably recognize the “Habañera,” the “Toreador Song,” and other numbers. Yet, its premiere was less than a success, mainly because its storyline upset the moral expectations of middle-class Parisians. Instead of a light comedy with likable characters and a happy ending, Carmen presents us with a beautiful but fiery Gypsy (the title character) who smokes, drinks, hangs out with smugglers, seduces a young soldier (Don José), then rejects him in favor of a bullfighter (Escamillo), and gets killed by José in the end. The tragic story takes place in Seville, Spain around 1830. It is based on a novella by Prosper Mérimée, who, in turn, was indebted to a poem, “The Gypsies,” by Alexander Pushkin.

Bizet based some numbers on Spanish or popular songs, even acknowledging that he re-worked the “Habañera” from a popular song by Spanish composer Sebastián Yradier. He also used a “fate” theme like a leitmotiv that recurs throughout the opera and appears at the very end. Although Bizet used numbered sequences, Guiraud departed from this numbering, instead selecting the instrumental pieces and the tunes of the most popular arias (solo songs) and choruses for his Suites. In France during the late 19th century, there was great interest in Spain and Spanish things. Other French composers, such as Emmanuel Chabrier and Edouard Lalo (who was of Spanish descent), also composed pieces in a Spanish style.

In late 2015, the Brazos Valley Symphony Society’s Board of Directors created an Endowment Committee and tasked them with the {seemingly} outrageous goal of raising one million dollars! Once that goal was met in an astonishingly short period of time the Board charged our Endowment Committee to take our permanent endowment funding level to THREE million dollars! Well guess what? We are closing in on that goal too! Our Endowment Committee has announced we have just cleared the two-million-dollar mark and the end is in sight! These last eight years, since our 2015 Board caught the vision for a permanent endowment fund, have seen unexpected changes we could have never imagined, but the music played on, and we never stopped believing in the treasure that is the BVSO! Preserving that treasure is OUR gift to future generations – and today we are literally on the precipice of reaching that goal. Join us in our FINAL push forward to the finish line! There are many ways that you can support BVSO’s Endowment campaign. Please contact the BVSO office today to find out which one works best for you!
