The year 2023–2024 provided a unique opportunity for Beauvoir to host a capstone celebration of its 90 incredible years as a leader in elementary education. As your governing board chair, it gives me great honor to thank you for your role in providing the necessary resources and community support to make our work possible. The 2023–2024 version of Beauvoir stood strongly and proudly on the shoulders of giants: those hundreds of faculty, hundreds of volunteers, and thousands of families who have created an environment where it is a daily example, and indeed an expectation, that we carve out a space to put the needs of children first.
The showcase of your extraordinary support in 2023–2024 was impressive—100 percent of our faculty and staff gave to our annual giving effort, The Beauvoir Fund. There is no higher level of commitment than 100 percent, and just another testimonial that no better group of faculty and staff exists in the DC area.
The Beauvoir community gave a generous $959,090 to the annual fund, the School’s top philanthropic priority, a four-percent increase over the prior year’s total. Our 49th Beauvoir Scholarship Benefit went “Beyond” expectations, netting more than $400,000 in proceeds to assist families with financial support to attend Beauvoir; this amount surpassed the prior year by 12 percent.
I hope you will review the profiles of retiring and new board members found on pages 2 and 3. It is my honor to lead this group of individuals as we implement the most recent strategic plan. The work being done by our board today will help guide and inform efforts around faculty compensation and financial assistance, as well as make Beauvoir one of the premier educational environments in the DC area. I look forward to sharing more with you on these topics as the board, working with school leadership, refines plans to conclude Beauvoir’s first century and beyond. As an example, the work that has been done most recently on the new flooring
and HVAC upgrades, which have mostly been accomplished behind the scenes or on evenings or weekends, could not have happened without the support you have provided with your steadfast generosity to Beauvoir. Thank you for setting the tone and the example of philanthropic involvement for this and future generations.
And, finally, I extend my sincere thanks for our tireless, buoyant Head of School Cindi GibbsWilborn, who never ceases to amaze me with her ability to create strategy that is appropriately broad enough to incorporate Beauvoir’s largest needs while still taking into the account the needs of each community member. Beauvoir is indeed blessed to have Cindi. At no time in history has more been expected from heads of school. She makes our school better each and every day, and this governing board chair’s job an easy one!
Thank you, Beauvoir community, for your ongoing support!
My very best,
Kelvin Coleman Governing Board Chair
Head of School Cindi Gibbs-Wilborn and Governing Board Chair Kelvin Coleman welcome the following new trustees to Beauvoir’s Board: Kevin Friend, Forest Kettler, Parents Association (PA) President Lisa Lowenstein, Keira Driansky Simon, and Porter Wilkinson.
Kevin Friend is a senior vice president with Compass Real Estate and leads The Friend Group. Prior to real estate, Kevin was a management consultant with experience in complex transactions, negotiations, and change. Kevin attended Georgetown University and received an MBA from the Smith School at the University of Maryland. He and his wife, Yolanda, are parents to Lennox ’25 and Pierce ’27 as well as Beauvoir graduates Aiden ’18 and Austin ’19.
Forest Kettler has more than 15 years’ experience in real estate development, primarily in large-scale, mixed-use, multifamily, and land development projects at his family’s firm, Kettler Enterprises, which is one of the largest multifamily operators serving the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions of the United States. Forest grew up in Washington, DC, and is an alumnus of St. Patrick’s, the Potomac School, and Boston University’s Questrom School of Business. Forest and his husband, William Springer, are parents of George ’25, Gwynnie ’27, and 3-yearold Wolfgang.
Lisa Lowenstein is senior associate general counsel at the biopharmaceutical company AbbVie, where she leads the U.S. Policy Legal Team. Prior to joining AbbVie, Lisa served in several roles, including assistant general counsel at the Pharmaceutical Research
and Manufacturers of America, and as an advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Lisa received her A.B. from Princeton University and her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She and her husband, Jeff, are the parents of Mariella “Mari” ’24 and Luke ’26. Lisa is honored to be the president of the Beauvoir Parents Association this year.
Keira Driansky Simon serves as president of North America & EVP of Ipsen. Prior to joining Ipsen, Keira spent 13 years at AstraZeneca leading teams across the United States, Europe, and global functions. She served as country president for Belgium and Luxembourg, overseeing 14 launches across various therapeutic areas. She has also served as an active board member of the Association of Marshall Scholars, the Yale Science & Engineering Association, the AstraZeneca Foundation, Alexion Belgium, and Pharma.be. Keira received her MBA from Harvard Business School and an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from the University of Cambridge. Keira also conducted breast cancer epidemiology research at the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar and conducted biochemistry research at Yale under a Howard Hughes Medical Fellowship. Keira graduated summa cum laude from Yale College, receiving a B.S. in applied mathematics with concentrations in molecular biochemistry & biophysics and economics. She and her husband, David Simon, are the proud parents of Chase ‘20, Grant ‘22, and Nadia ‘27.
Porter Wilkinson is counselor and chief of staff to the Smithsonian Institution Board of Regents. Before joining the Smithsonian, Porter practiced law at a multinational law firm. She was a law clerk to Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. of the Supreme Court of the United States and to then-Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and received her B.A. with highest honors from the University of North Carolina, where she played women’s lacrosse. Porter and her husband, Jeff Wall, are parents of Jay ’24 and Davis ’28.
We bid a fond farewell to former Board members Kris McBrady, Fernanda Montaño, Ashley McDowell Taylor ’91, former PA President Kate Tyrrell, and Fred Underwood, with deep gratitude for their dedication and service. In addition, thanks are extended to Talhia Therese Tuck, Beauvoir’s first and former Institutional Representative to the PECF Board of Trustees, for her commitment and support.

The Board of Trustees, acting together as stewards of Beauvoir, shall provide the leadership for those policies, programs and initiatives that will best ensure the perpetuation of the School, its policies, its mission, and its philosophy. Beauvoir trustees shall seek to guarantee ongoing excellence in primary education by committing to have a superior Head of School, faculty, program, and facility.
You brought kindness, humor, and enthusiasm into our classrooms each day. You have consistently demonstrated an enviable work ethic and truly adopted growth mindsets. You were friendly and inclusive, and we know that you will spread joy and creativity everywhere you go. You filled our year with joy, laughter, and curiosity, and we are so proud of all you have accomplished!
“All of us at Beauvoir are so proud of the Class of 2024. Every day, they worked to show us what the Life Rules look like in action. The joy they brought into the building during their time at Beauvoir was palpable, and I hope they come back to visit us often. My wish for every member of this special class is to remain kind, respectful, responsible, and honest students who love learning and growing each day.”
—Megan Chounoune, Head of Upper Years
We sincerely thank our Parents Association and all dedicated volunteers for generously sharing their time and talents to support our school community. Your steadfast commitment enriches each student’s learning experience and strengthens the connections within our vibrant and supportive community. We deeply appreciate all that you do!
As the foundation for philanthropy at Beauvoir, the Beauvoir Fund directly supports the needs of current students and faculty, beyond what tuition covers. Donations to the Beauvoir Fund are crucial to maintaining child-centered learning spaces, supporting excellence in teaching, and ensuring Beauvoir’s commitment to early childhood. Thank you to our donors for partnering with Beauvoir to ensure an extraordinary early childhood education for our students.

Your gift to the Beauvoir Fund goes beyond what tuition covers to ensure this year’s needs are fully funded, including educational field trips, classroom resources, exceptional professional development for our faculty and staff, and curricular improvements that evolve with our students’ learning needs.
Your support ensures each child benefits from Beauvoir’s exceptional partner-teacher model.
“
One of the many reasons we teach at Beauvoir is because we have experienced firsthand that the very best way to truly understand each student’s needs as a unique learner is to have two, fully qualified teachers in every classroom. This means every student has a team who collaborates innovatively, teaches dynamically, and partners to ensure each child is meaningfully engaged in every moment of their amazing school day. Beauvoir’s Annual Fund is fundamental in supporting the partner-teacher model.”
Nicole Maaia & Jakobi Jackson, First Grade Partner Teachers
At Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School, we provide an extraordinary early childhood education in a diverse community that values every individual. Beauvoir’s program encourages creative, courageous learners and builds an enduring foundation for a lifelong spirit of inquiry and joy in learning.
