ROMDOUL ROOTS SCHOOL YEAR 3 SEM 1

This school in a small village of Cambodia (Kanh Chor Village) was designed with the hopes of reigniting the lost culture and heritage of the Khmer community in Cambodia. With that in mind, weeks of research and calls with our community partner in Cambodia was conducted to find out more about their culture and way of life. The concept of local heritage and culture helped in deriving the form of the building as the national flower of Cambodia - Romduol flower. Concept Diagram

User Analysis

Programs Students Young students spend time in the learning center to learn english and enjoy leisure activities like sports. They enjoy reading and wish for a library and better sanitary facilities.

Teachers Teaches english on the weekdays and computer lessons on the weekend.They also spend time doing leisure activities with the students.

Community Includes villagers and parents of students in the learning center. They frequent the learning center to chat and spend time together.

A large double volume atrium is found right at the centre of the building and serves a main communal hall where school events can be held. It also serves as the main entrance to the school. An organic garden was also integrated into the school to allow students to develop self sustainability skills. Materials used in construction were mainly sustainable local materials such as timber and self made eco-bricks.

The location of this project was a vacant site of 1900 sqm along Jln Bukit Merah and Lengkok Bahru. The task was to design a low-rise residential building for potential users. After various stages of research of the neighbourhood and potential users, a concept of future proofing was chosen as the main focus of the project. The units features open layouts and movable partitions which provide flexibility to the user and includes sustainable features such as breezeways and using sustainable materials, and other technologies such as rain water collection and cooling and solar energy. Since greenery plays a big part in sustainability, a sky garden was implemented into the building that also provides leisure use for users.

Concrete is used for structural components such as beam, columns, floor slabs, and walls and also to finish outdoor landscaping surfaces

Vegetation can be found in the sky garden and various parts of the building. They help in natural cooling of the building.

Reconstituted timber is used for various hardscaping features and for facade treatment of the building that doubles as sun shading.

Plaster is used to give a durable and clean finish to interior and exterior walls.

This Arts Center is located in the conservation area of Little India along Kg Kapor Road. It was designed to provide a home to the Indian Community to showcase their arts, from performing arts to visual arts. Its angular form and light facade provides contrast against its surrondings while its interior is designed to be Exploded Axonometric Construction Detail an ambulatory loop around its main spaces such as the galleries and atrium.

The enclosure system of the buidling is a full facade of translucent polycarbonate sheet panels that cover all elevations of the building. This creates non distracting interiors while also allowing light to diffuse into the building.

Passive Design Strategies

3. Polycarbonate facade sheets allow for interior spaces to be naturally lit through light transmission and diffusion.

2. Extensive Green roof naturally cools that building which makes it energy efficient.

1. Skylights are added to provide natural lighting to the atrium below.

4. Polycarbonate facade sheets also provide thermal insulation of interior spaces.

5. Openings are made on opposite sides of the atrium to naturally ventilate the space.

This project is a continuaton from semester 2’s art center project where the designed was refined and improved based on previous comments. A stronger reference to the Indian culture has been emphasized and more interesting designs and greenery added.The Little India Arts Center will aim to re-establish Little India as a district rich with various arts and to provide a platform for the Indian community to showcase their arts while also attracting youths to come to Little India to explore its rich Indian heritage. The buildings angular form and light facade will create contrast from the dense and rigid shophouses in Little India. The perforated screen patterns and circular openings give reference to geometry in traditional Indian architecture. Play of light is emphasized through the building with screen patterns and skylights that provide a spotlight effect to the large sculptures below. Massing Diagram

LITTLE INDIA SITE ANALYSIS YEAR 3 SEM 1

The Urban Analysis of Little India was a group effort done by a group of 5 teammates including myself. It aimed to cover the tangible and non-tangible aspects of Little India as of 2021. I was tasked with conducting desktop research of the physical and cultural aspects of the selected site and the whole of Little India as a subzone. In addition, I was also tasked with creating most of the visual diagrams and also the formatting and designing of the presentation slides of the urban analysis report.

This Urban Design Analysis report aims to identify, document, analyze, understand, and present the tangible and intangible aspects of the given site as well as the Little India area. The scope of the report will cover the findings on site such as physical features and human activities, and also desktop research. The research includes the surveys, collect information and data serves as formal and programmatic studies for the year 3 Architecture Students’ Final Year Project (FYP 2021-2022). This urban study is FYP’s First Stage of Diploma in Sustainable Urban Design & Engineering (SDE), School of Design & Environment, Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

There is a scarcity of vegetation in Little India, especially In the conservation area, As the conservation area is very dense with shophouses, there is not much space for vegetation and open green spaces to be integrated. However, there's an abundance of large green spaces around the subzone.

Average Temperatures The maximum and minimum mean temperature in both hot days and cold days are low during the north-east monsoon season between December and March.

The months of April and May are the hottest in the day as shown in the mean temperature as the hottest days can go up to 33°c during the days without the north-east monsoon

The main network of drains in Little India comes in the form of road side drains and appear on both sides of most roads. Only drains along main roads and bystreets were visualized in the diagram. The Rochor River which is a canalized river runs along Rochor Canal Road, Sungei Road, and Bukit Timah Road. It branches out into other drains in the form of above ground storm drains and others.

Materials that were used were grass, trees, shrubs, and artificial grass.

There is a wide network of drainage lines in Little India that includes many types of drains.

Most of the vegetation that can be found around Little India is located along the border of the subzone which are along Sungei Road, Bukit Timah Road, and Rochor River.

Insights The temperature in Little India is quite consistent and resembles a tropical country

Open spaces in Little India include promenades, park/ open space, and other public spaces. Promenades can be found in Campbell Lane and along Chander Road.

There are many hotels in the subzone, ranging from premium hotels like PARKROYAL to budget hotels like Hotel 81.

Lastly, some cultural institutions in the subzone include the Indian Heritage Centre. Other buildings include religious buildings such as the King of Glory Church (9 Norris Road). However, not many people are seen going to these places.

Other forms of commercial buildings are combinations that may include hotels, shopping centres, offices, or associations under the same building.

Serangoon Road

Trade and other jobs were at its peak. Due to its prime location, Serangoon road was a popular point for goods to be transported to. Other jobs such as cattle trade and jobs in the brick kiln attracted many Indians to settle in the area.

Serangoon road was built in the late 19th century by Indian convict. Together with other Indian settlers, their presence led to the birth of an Indian district. However, frequent fires in their slum-like dwellings motivated them to change.

The Kampong Kapor Improvement Scheme was initiated. The scheme aimed to drain the Kampong Kapor area to make way for commercial development. Since land had to be cleared, many water dependent industries had to be terminated.

In 1915, Tekka market was built to provide an area for retailers to sell their produce. Many roads such as Rowell road and Kampong Kapor road were created. In the 1940s, Little India became a commercial- residential area with a significant Indian population. However, residents started moving out in the 1970s as public housing projects such as the Tekka Centre and Rowell Court public housing estate were built.

Many buildings including former houses, hotels, and places of worship are under conservation status. Little India has again become a popular residential area and tourist attraction due to its rich heritage.

History

Little India may seem like a typical commercial centre with only a strong history and Indian heritage. However, it also has a strong arts culture that attracts many young artists and visitors to the area.

Originally constructed in the 1940s by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), the Art Deco building was a residential block which included flats. In the 1990s, it became a budget hotel named the Madras Hotel. The Art Deco style of the building was reminiscent of the earlier flats by SIT in districts such as Tiong Bahru.

The rundown terrace houses North of the site will be reserved for future development as well.

In 1985, the Arts Housing Scheme was implemented by the National Arts Council (NAC) to provide affordable spaces for art groups and artists to work and improve on their craft and therefore contribute to the Singapore art scene.

D e s i gn In a 24-month refurbishment project that was completed in 2018, the Great Madras Hotel was restored into a 34-room hostel and hotel. Its new design aimed to reproduce the lively energy of Little India and its culture, sights, sound, and smell while revisiting the retro Art Deco style.

Possible future developments for these houses are conservation works as they are included in the conservation area of Little India. They might be for residential use in the future as many of the other terrace houses nearby are also for residential use.

In the 2000s, the NAC sponsored a row of shophouses along Kerbau Road for arts housing. The NAC provides 90% of the rent for art groups to settle in the area. A few of the first groups who settled in the shophouses include Wild Rice, Spell#7 and Bhaskar’s Art Academy. These art groups took their arts to the streets and generated buzz and brought life to the area.

Revitalisation The first storey of the building was a highlight of the building. Hence , it was converted into an open concept lobby which serves as a living room for the neighbourhood as it encourages seamless flow between the building and the street. A localised interior was produced with custom wallpaper which depicted Singapore’s unique identity.

In the recent years, many artists have contributed in their own ways to add colour to Little India. From murals celebrating the areas distinct identity, to contemporary art sculptures, these artists works have brightened up Little India Makara by Zero

Preservation Several elements of the building, such as the original rear spiral staircase, was preserved to create a spatial and visual connection through the building’s 3 storeys. The original exterior fittings, including the brickwork of the balconies, were largely preserved as they were meticulously taken apart to be cleaned, repaired, and restored. The building’s façade was given a new paint job with a pastel colour scheme to retain it Art Deco appearance. Retro décor was also incorporated into the internal and external spaces. In 2018, the Great Madras Hotel was awarded the Architectural Heritage Award in recognition of its restoration efforts.

A unique shaped skylight allows for natural sunlight to brighten the main communal area, the multipurpose hall. The double volume structure allows more light to enter the multipurpose hall.

The windows features porous bamboo weaved patterns which allows for natural ventilation. Windows are placed on opposite ends of the buildings to provide cross ventilation. The open clerestory allows for stack ventilation.

5 blocks, each representing 1 of the 5 senses, is stacked directly on top of each other to form a uniform shape.

Feel free to step into the scented pebble pit that will provide comfort to your noses.

The blocks are then offset to form spaces open to sky that will be used for leisure and access.

Forms such as the iconic Toa Payoh Playground, HDB void deck chess table, and the old bus stop seating are created throughout the project. Small capsule toy machines are available as well to allow visitors to purchase old Singaporean toys such as five stones, marbles, and country eraser. Visitors can then use the surrouding area to play with these toys. The project’s components are made to be modular. is a residential building along Lengkok Bahru that was designed with future-proofing in mind. Many methods of future-proofing has been implemented into the building, from the technology to the layout of the building. The apartment features units that are planned out for future-proofing. It features open layouts and movable partitions which provide flexibility to the user. The building was also designed to include many sustainable features such as breezeways and using sustainable materials, and other technologies such as rain water collection and cooling and solar energy. Since greenery plays a big part in sustainability, a sky garden was implemented into the building for the users’ leisure use and can also contribute to natural cooling of the building.

LITTLE INDIA ARTS CENTER Indian art comes in many forms such as visual arts which include acrylic, oil paintings, sculptures, and performing arts as well. However, these are rarely showcased to the public. The Little India Arts Center will aim to re-establish Little India as a district rich with various arts. The Arts Center was designed so as to provide a platform for the Indian community to showcase their arts while also attracting youths to come to Little India to explore its rich Indian heritage.

The building form was designed with creating a contrast in mind. A light looking screen facade combined with the angular form and circular openings of the building aims to create contrast against the dense rigid forms of shophouses in Little India Conservation Area. The triangular perforated screen patterns and large circular openings give reference to geometry in traditional Indian architecture. The screen facade and clerestory openings in the gallery allow for play of light and shadows throughout the building while multiple skylights provide a spotlight effect to draw attention to the large sculptures below.

EXTERNAL PROJECTS My City My Colour: Marina Bay Story The Wrap a Rock Marina Bay Project 2019 This edition of Urban Planning Festival’s Art Jamming aimed to work with the student community to change mundane boulders into art pieces. I led a team of 3 other teammates to design a set of patterns that are to be painted in the concrete boulders along Marina Bay. The patterns were inspired by 4 main landmarks that can be found around Marina Bay, namely the Marina Bay Sands Hotel, the Esplanade, the Merlion, and the Art Science Museum.
