WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE Non Excidet – translated from its Latin origin meaning “He will not fail” or “He will not give up” – has long been the motto for Bishop Verot students. It reminds us we are called to live and love like God. In trusting Him we must never quit, never give up, and continually strive to do our best.

In this edition of the B&G Alumni Magazine, you will read about how your fellow alumni have returned to Verot to do their best to make an impact on the lives of current students and athletes. Mr. Mark Latell ’83 was named the Director of Student Life after several years in the classroom. On page10, learn about all he is doing to make a difference in student’s lives. Coach John Mohring ’03, recently named Head Coach of the Viking Football Program, is making an impact on students in the classroom, the weight room, and on the football field (page 12). And on page 16 a number of alumni are serving on this year’s Bishop Verot School Board.

While you read about the many ways our students are making an impact on their world with Catholics in Action on page 14 and the School Notes on page 46, please know it is the support of those passionate about Verot making it possible. On page 6, Jeff Brown ’80, Director of Development, shares how your donation to the Annual Appeal helps insure our future and the Giving Guide on page 8 explains the ways you can give and how your gift impacts today’s students.

The Bishop Verot Alumni Association continues to hold events encouraging Verot alumni to reconnect to their alma mater (page 40). This spring there are a number of events for which your support would be greatly appreciated. Please consider joining us for the Verot Viking 5K on February 1st or the Annual Gala and Auction on March 28th (this year’s theme – 70’s Boogie Night). Bishop Verot Theater will present Beauty and the Beast, directed by Lisa (Stevens) Clark ’07, from April 2nd - 5th.

Finally, as the Class of 2020 is counting down their days at Verot, we are preparing for a new class of freshmen in the fall. Last year’s freshmen enrollment was one of our strongest in years, and we expect the same for this year as well. If you know someone who would benefit from a Catholic education and make a great Viking, please encourage them to apply soon – registration begins at the end of February.

As we begin a new year, a new decade, so do we also encounter new challenges. May the spirit of Non Excidet – the resounding we will not fail – remind us all as long as we never give up and trust in Him we can overcome all of life’s challenges.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Our Mission Bishop Verot Catholic High School builds relationships centered on faith, learning, and leadership devoted to educating the whole person, utilizing innovative technologies, empowering students through collaborative experiences, and cultivating a spirit of service while grounded in our relationship with Jesus Christ.

Although our mission has been updated over the years, the core remains the same - relationships built on Faith, Learning, and Leadership. Just as the objectives have changed, the campus has also required updates as we continue to lead the way in educating students. While the connections built at Bishop Verot over the past 50 years are priceless, it is the continued support of the Verot family making our constant progress possible.

The 2019 school year opened with one of our largest freshman classes enrolled with 203 students. A record number of transfer students have joined the family this year as well, bringing our total enrollment to 730. It was not long ago when enrollment was just over 400 students. This is a testament to the hard work of the faculty and staff as we strive to achieve our goals while honoring our deep traditions.

Our Catholic faith remains the cornerstone for all we do at Verot. Each day begins with a prayer and the pledge of allegiance just as it did in the first days at Verot. The Direction of Intention is prayed at the start of each class period and a blessing is said before lunch. As students walk the halls or gather in the Plaza, they are reminded of whom we are by inspirational quotes hanging on the walls. Our relationship with Jesus Christ serves as constant encouragement as we strive to fulfill His purpose in our lives.

Academically, our success is measured by the accomplishments of our students. We often hear the statistics for our graduating seniors; the Class of 2019 received over $13 million in scholarship offers with 99% of our graduating seniors matriculating on to colleges and universities all over the country. But what of our underclassmen? It takes three years of commitment and dedication to achieve the accomplishments of a graduating senior. Last year students from all four classes represented Bishop Verot and competed against other schools in events like the 8th Annual Southwest Florida STEM Tour ranking 1st, 2nd and 3rd in three different events, members of the National Honor Society traveled to Orlando for a Leadership, Experience, and Development Conference, the Model United Nations Club competed in a national Model UN Conference in Boston, Catholics in Action members joined Catholics from across the nation to March for Life in Washington, D.C., and Vikings competed in the 2019 Student Television Network National Convention in Seattle bringing home several awards.

These experiences offer our students an opportunity to build communication skills while discovering their passions. As an Apple Distinguished School, we continue to discover new and innovative ways to engage our students while using technology taking education to new levels.

Recognizing the need for leadership opportunities, three years ago we adopted a Community and House

System, replacing the traditional Student Government Association.

With the student body divided into six communities and then eight houses per community, we now have over 90 leadership roles to fill with a plan in place to help develop those skills beginning with our freshmen. This is not the only goal, however. The new system has proved to be key in creating bonds across class lines taking the Verot family to new levels. Friendly competitions between the communities include service projects as well as fun and games, all planned by the students. While this system is still fairly new, we are excited for the positive impact it has had on our student body so far and are confident it will continue to grow.

Hopefully, the Bishop Verot Catholic High School of today is one to make you proud; proud to call your alma mater, your children’s school, grandchildren’s school, or simply your local Catholic high school. The continued success and growth of Verot is reliant on the constant support of the fundraising efforts, primarily the Annual Appeal.Your support shows your willingness to be an active partner in the Catholic education of our students and the future of the Verot family.

oday’s Bishop Verot Catholic High School student measures among the brightest in the nation, with SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement scores well above the national average. Our students are indeed prepared to meet the challenges of a competitive university environment and have the drive and discipline to become the next generation of leaders in the Southwest Florida community and beyond.

The cost of educating our students has risen as technology and other factors have dramatically altered the educational landscape. Bishop Verot has strived to limit tuition increases to ensure financial challenges do not become an obstacle for our families.

The single most effective way you can ensure all qualified students are able to attend Bishop Verot Catholic High School is through your financial support. There are many ways to

support Bishop Verot including direct contributions, pledges over time, and bequests. If you are 70 ½ or older and make a contribution directly from your traditional IRA, amounts up to $100,000 are not considered a taxable distribution.Your gift of a Catholic education impacts students for the rest of their lives.

Annual Fund The Bishop Verot Annual Fund is the foundation of the community support for our school, supporting such initiatives as technology enhancements, tuition assistance, and campus improvements. The campaign asks for support from our Catholic community, alumni, current and former parents, and friends.Your gift of any amount may be designated to the area you are most passionate about or where it is needed most, the choice is yours. Every dollar donated to Bishop Verot is directly supporting our mission to build a WINTER 2019-20

community of faith and learning.

Adopt – A – Student Currently, more than 40% of our families request need-based tuition assistance. Assistance is not covered by any outside group and must be attained through Bishop Verot’s fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, we are unable to meet everyone’s request.

Contributing to the Adopt – A – Student program will allow you to make the greatest impact in the lives of our students by ensuring a solid education in a faith-filled environment. Tuition for the 20192020 school year is $12,500.

Endowed Scholarships

John and Mimi Hotchkiss Scholarship Fund - Est. 2004 Income used to provide financial assistance for a qualified student to attend BVHS.

The purpose of an endowment is to provide ongoing support for the current and future activities of Bishop Verot and its students.

It is, therefore, a perpetual, selfsustaining source of permanent funding. Each year, a portion of the endowment’s earnings are paid out, while the principal is retained for future growth. As a result, it is imperative the endowment grow its investment assets sufficient to support an annual spending stream of the endowment in perpetuity.

The two key components required for the endowment to grow are new gifts and investment performance. New funds are essential to the future of Verot.

Please consider starting a fund in your alumni class.

Bishop Verot currently has 11 endowed scholarship funds valued at over $2.9 million, which provide over $100,000 in scholarships each year.

M

ark Latell’s passion to fulfill the mission of Bishop Verot is evident in all he does. Whether he is telling you about his days as a student or sharing events planned for current students his excitement is infectious. It is not surprising when asked for his favorite bible verse he responded with Proverbs 27:17. As a Verot alumnus, current parent (his daughters Danielle ’20 and Anna ’22 are Vikings with his son David joining the family as a freshman next year), and the Director of Student Life, inspiring students to live their best life taking advantage of all Verot has to offer is his personal mission.

After graduating from Verot in 1983, Mark attended Georgia Tech to pursue his degree in civil engineering.

He accepted a position with Chicago

After marrying Deanna DeWolfe, also a Verot grad, he settled in North Carolina partnering with family in residential and commercial development. As he and Deanna started their family, the intention was always to return to Southwest Florida to raise their children. After their 5th child was born, the timing was right to head back home. In 2010, former Principal Fr. Beretta offered Mark the opportunity to once again join the Verot family.

Mark loved his time here as a student, being very involved in

all there was to offer. He was a member of the Varsity Football team, attended and lead many retreats (called SEARCH retreats WINTER 2019-20

back then), and was cast the lead in the theater production of Guys and Dolls (not because he was the best singer, but because he was the loudest).

This year, he was offered the opportunity to lead the student body as Director of Student Life.

While he knew he would miss the classroom and inspiring students – some of whom were children of his classmates – in math and engineering, this was a chance to share his faith while ensuring the continuation of the many Verot traditions.

In his new role, Mark oversees the House System, organizes Prayer Services and Masses, handles community service requirements for our students, and leads the Live Jesus retreats. His leadership of the House System includes the planning and implementation of the many Verot events like Homecoming and Catholic Schools Week. Through community competitions, he inspires students to find ways to help our

community from organizing the Box of Joy project to collecting canned goods for Bahamas Hurricane Relief.

envisioned. He spits nails. It’s no holds barred. It’s tough. It’s visceral.

It’s a guy thing. These attributes are what contributed to his being named Bishop Verot Head Football Coach following an outstanding 2019 football season.

And then came the girls.

In 2017, Bishop Verot added boys and girls weightlifting to our sport line-up and for the first time in his career, Coach Mohring found himself coaching girls.

“I honestly didn’t know what to expect,” Coach Mohring said, “but I soon found out the girls work ten times harder than the boys. I thought it would take them a little longer to learn the lifts but with their dedication, they picked it up very quickly…. and they listen.”

Coach Mohring’s goal is the same every season – to build on the previous season and advance more girls into Regional competitions, which he’s consistently achieved.

Natalie Arnold, ’18 was Coach Mohring’s first regional qualifier.

“Coach Mohring was constantly pushing us to our greatest potential,” Natalie offered, “all the while making the sport fun and enjoyable. I was always excited for practice and meets. Coach Mohring taught us so much about the sport.”

“I personally believe we will have a Girls Weightlifting State Qualifier before we see advancement in the boys’ program. They have progressed so much faster than the boys,” Coach Mohring predicted.

When asked how he prepares himself as a coach to transition from football to girls’ weightlifting, John said there is a good deal of carryover from sport to sport.

“It comes down to instilling a work ethic and perseverance when preparing athletes in both sports. In weightlifting, it’s about mastering the form.You can’t improve or advance as a weightlifter without practicing

form. In both football and weightlifting, my hardest working athletes are the most successful.”

John and his wife, Misa, welcomed their first child in November, a son they named Bear. Will he be a football player? A weightlifter?

“Bear can do whatever he wants to do,” John replied.

“He will be exposed early to football and weightlifting. He will want to be just like his daddy. I know I did when I was growing up.”

Be sure to follow our girls weightlifting program this season. If Mohring’s prediction and past success holds true, it will be another season for the record books.

Catholics in Action T

he Catholics in Action Club kicked off second quarter with an inspiring weekend trip to Ave Maria University. Last month, eight members of CIA took a bus to Ave Maria for the purpose of visiting the university, getting to know the town, and discovering more about their faith. The students were able to glimpse a day in the life of Ave’s students, touring classrooms and even participating alongside the college students in a Shakespeare acting class. The second day, the group volunteered in Immokalee as part of Ave’s Mother Theresa Project. A portion of this massive movement entails assisting with the care of children whose parents have to work to provide for their families. Our CIA group had a blast playing soccer, reading, drawing, and bonding with children of all ages. All of the Verot students who attended this amazing event came back with a new interest in Ave Maria, and with new experiences and faith-filled memories forever impacting their lives.

everal members traveled to Punta Gorda this fall to participate in the annual Diocese of Venice Youth Rally. This year’s theme was Called by Name and featured speakers DJ Bernal and Noelle Garcia and a musical performance by Taylor Tripoldi. Many of the students were attending the Youth Rally for the very first time.

Declan DiMarino - sophomore “I thought the rally was exciting. It was very fun but also religious with all the songs and the speakers talking about their relationship with our Lord. After walking out of Mass at the end of the day I realized how much closer I could get to God because I drifted away after receiving my Confirmation in 8th grade.”

In January, the club members look forward to traveling to Washington D.C. to participate in the 47th annual March for Life. Through the generosity of many sponsors last year, Catholics in Action was able to take a record 29 students; however, this year, with the club’s overwhelming enthusiasm and growth, they hope to take 32 members. The club is actively fundraising and planning to ensure this trip will be a life-changing experience for all those involved.

As the Catholics in Action club continues to grow, so does the spirit of faith and community in its members. Ever since the founding, this club has had an increasingly positive impact on not only its members, but also the Verot community as a whole. BV

he Bishop Verot School Board is comprised of current and past parents, alumni, and community leaders bringing years of personal, professional, and educational experience to this advisory board. The School Board works with school administration in an advisory role on matters pertaining to school policy and planning for the continued growth and success of Bishop Verot Catholic High School. In addition to the School Board responsibilities, some of the members also serve on area-specific committees including the

Finance Committee, Academic Affairs Committee, Development Committee, and the Marketing Committee.

Coach Eddie joined the Verot Athletic Department as Head Coach of the Boys Varsity Soccer team this season. A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Coach Eddie has won two national championships at the ASOMEX association in 1993 and 1995.

In 2004, he moved to the US to pursue his bachelor and master degree at the University of Southern Mississippi. He has been coaching for youth clubs in the Head Coach SWFL region since 2012, where he has led multiple teams to the final rounds Eddie Villarreal of the Florida Youth Soccer Association State Cup. He and his wife live in Estero with their two daughters, Eva and Luna.

Eric Lamboy returns to the Verot family as Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Soccer team. Coach Lamboy previously worked with the Verot Soccer Program from 2006 to 2009 and he holds a USSF National C License in coaching and NSCAA diplomas in both Youth and Advanced Regional coaching and State and Regional goalkeeping. His extensive coaching career includes two years at Cape Coral High School, over 15 years with the Cape Coral Head Coach Soccer Association’s Competitive Soccer Eric Lamboy League, and he currently serves on the coaching staff for ODP and FYSA. Eric and his wife, Jill, have four children, Stephanie ’10, Emily, Dalton, and Mia.

Coach Herting is in his 21st year as the Boys Head Varsity Basketball Coach, where he has had over 400 career wins, making him Verot’s winningest coach. Coach Herting has won more play-off games than any boys basketball coach in the history of Southwest Florida (16 play-off wins).

Verot has won nine district championships in the last 15 years and have been to six Elite 8’s.Verot has advanced to the state play-offs 12 of the last 14 seasons. Coach Herting has been named SW Florida Coach of the Year five times. He has a BA from the University of Sioux Falls (SD) and a MS from Mississippi State University.

John Mohring is in his third season as Head Coach of the Girls Weightlifting team. Coach Mohring has a Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Arkansas. After earning All-American Team Honors in 2005 and 2006 for football at Georgia Southern, Coach Mohring signed and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Coach Mohring is also a teacher in the Athletic Department as well as the Head Coach for Varsity Football.

She works for Cemex USA and enjoys working in the community. Amy and Cris, her husband of 21 years, have three children; Trevor '16, Bryce '17, and Harley '19. Cheering is a big part of her life and she enjoys coaching JV and Varsity.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

STAYING CONNECTED Over the past year we’ve had the opportunity to plan several fun events for Verot alumni. Along the way we’ve had the pleasure to meet many new faces and reconnect with old classmates.

In October, we enjoyed tasty pizza while catching up with alumni and friends at our annual Oktoberfest hosted at Downtown House of Pizza.

In December, we held our annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Happy Hour at Marlins Brewhouse, owned and operated by Tim Frederic ’96. Everyone in attendance enjoyed getting into the holiday spirit while helping themselves to a delicious nacho bar.

Stephanie Zavada ’10 won a ticket to the Gala for wearing the best (ugliest) sweater.

Mabry, who guided Verot to a regional championship in 2016, had the best season of her collegiate career. The junior led the Crimson with 222 kills, and was second on the roster with 2.53 digs per set. She recorded at least ten kills in nine matches, and logged four double-doubles on the season. Mabry’s efforts were recognized by the Ivy League, who named her as a AllIvy League Honorable Mention selection.

Shepherd, who is playing at Wesley College for former Verot assistant Dean Burrows, has played in every game for the Wolverines as of press time.

The freshman, who has made five starts for the Division III program, scored his first career points against Division I Wagner.

Shepherd scored eight points against Wagner on November 12, and added eight more points against DeSales on November 15.

Collins made her Florida State debut this season, helping the Seminoles to the NCAA Tournament as a redshirt freshman. FSU went 19-10 on the season, which included a 12-6 record in the ACC. The 2018 Verot grad appeared in 14 sets for the Seminoles, and logged 13 digs, two assists and a service ace.

As a freshman, Terry has played in nine of Limestone’s eleven games as of press time, helping the Saints to an 8-3 start. The 2019 Verot alum had her best game of the season to date on November 30 against Lees-McRae, when she scored six points on four shots in just seven minutes of action. Terry has also grabbed at least one rebound in seven of her nine appearances as of press time.

MASSACHUSETTS MARITIME FOOTBALL The sophomore helped the Division III Buccaneers to a 6-4 record this season, as well as a 4-4 record in conference play.

White played in seven games on the season, and logged tackles in victories over Maine Maritime, Worcester State, and Fitchburg State. White’s solo tackle against Worcester State on October 5 was the first of his career at Massachusetts Maritime.

FGCU SWIMMING The freshman has contributed for the Eagles in distance events during her first season on campus.VanDress finished in second place against Houston in the 1650 freestyle race, and swam a personal best in the 400 IM and a season-best in the 500 free against the Cougars.VanDress also added points to FGCU’s team total at the 13-team Phill Hansel Invitational.

fter graduating from Bishop Verot in 2007, Kal attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, graduating with a B.S. in Astronautical Engineering and commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Soon after, he began Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, MS, flying the T-6A Texan II and T-38C Talon training aircraft. Upon completion of pilot training, he was assigned to fly the B-52H with the 23rd Bomb Squadron out of Minot AFB, North Dakota, where he had the opportunity to deploy to Guam, England, and Qatar. “While my time out in the Pacific and the UK was incredible, the six months in Qatar were a significant life experience for me, combatting ISIS throughout the Middle East and aiding in the liberation of Mosul,Tal Afar, and Raqqa.”

About two years ago, Kal decided to submit his application and “tryout” to fly the U-2 Dragon Lady at Beale AFB, California and fortunately, made the cut. The U-2 is an ultrahigh altitude “spy plane” aircraft specializing in strategic intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations. “The U-2 flies so high, we have to wear space suits to protect ourselves from the risks of potentially fatal Decompression Sickness (DCS) if there were to be a rapid loss of cabin pressurization. I consider myself to be extremely lucky to fly such a historic and unique aircraft within an amazing tight-knit community of skilled aviators, maintainers and support personnel.”

Bishop Verot played such a tremendous role in preparing me for my future as an Air Force officer and pilot - from rigorous AP classes, to a community of teachers, coaches, and administrators who backed my goals every step of the way. Father Beretta, Mrs. Shriner, Mrs. Elmeer, Mrs. Knox, Mrs. Dakin, Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Hamann, Mr. Boulton, Mr. Siuda, Mr. Stejskal, Coach Hall, Coach Gill, Coach LoSauro...they all had a role in developing me to meet future academic and life challenges. I’m so thankful for the lifelong friendships fostered in the hallways, classrooms, and athletic fields at Bishop Verot.

My advice to students is to maintain a positive attitude and greet the challenges of life with hard work and optimism. Find your passion and develop it - live your best life!

Brittany and Jack Craig were married this fall at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington, D.C. Brittany works for a non-profit and Jack is a federal contractor. The couple resides in Alexandria,Virginia.

Dr. Carlos Aaron Monroy and Dr. Sandra Marcela Rivas married October 12, 2019, exchanging vows at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Celebration, Florida. The wedding reception was held at the Bohemian Hotel, where family and friends toasted the happy couple.

Aaron and Marci now live near Des Moines, Iowa and vacation frequently in Florida.

Elizabeth Ardolino and Tanner Williams are pleased to announce their engagement. Tanner is a 3rd class Petty Officer in the US Coast Guard and Elizabeth is the Front Desk Manager at the Westin Cape Coral.

Elizabeth plans to relocate to Lakeside Marblehead, Ohio where Tanner is currently stationed.

The couple is planning a spring 2022 wedding.

Alejandro and Diana Macon were married on November 9, 2019 at St. Marks in Huntersville, N.C. and celebrated with a reception at Peninsula Yacht Club on Lake Norman. They honeymooned in Rome and Florence, Italy. Alejandro is employed with Wells Fargo and Diana works for The Hartford, both in Charlotte, N.C. The couple resides in Concord, N.C.

Mark Wagner and Sarah Bearden are pleased to announce their engagement. The couple is planning to be married October 23, 2020 in LaGrange, Georgia. Mark will be graduating from Ave Maria School of Law in May 2020.

After the wedding Mark and Sarah plan to reside in Southwest Florida, where Sarah will continue her career in marketing.

SCHOOL NOTES

Bishop Verot Theater Our Verot Theater Thespian troupe traveled to West Palm Beach this winter for their first district competition.

Students from all over South Florida prepared theatrical performances and backstage and tech presentations to compete in front of judges. Our troupe’s performers received high scores across the board. Three of our students are going on to compete in the State Competition in March. Senior Noah Snider will be going for his Playwright entry, sophomore Emily Kidd will be going for her Monologue performance, and freshman Grace Ryan will be going for her Solo Musical performance. Congratulations,Vikings!

Digital Video Production The launch of the live Facebook page, Verot Live, began this fall with students running the cameras and commentary for many of the Viking athletic competitions.

They have taken the cameras to the pool deck, bowling alley,Viking Stadium, Nevins Gymnasium, and other locations to live stream our Vikings as they compete.

Students recently visited the Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting at Full Sail University in Orlando for a tour of the studios, control rooms and to learn more about the university’s programs.

They were also given a private sports broadcasting training session.

SCHOOL NOTES Seniors Athletic Signings In November, three of our Viking senior athletes signed their commitments to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Catherine Reszel committed to Ave Maria University to play basketball, Andrew Vieceli will play baseball for Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Georgia, and Gabriella Vetter will join the golf team at the University of North Alabama.

A Christmas Tradition This December the tradition continued with Verot hosting a gingerbread house and cookie decorating party for students from both St. Andrew Catholic School and St. Francis Xavier School. National Honor Society members prepared the houses and helped the children with decorating. The future Vikings enjoyed their time at Verot singing Christmas songs, creating their Christmas masterpieces, and making new friends.
