WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE The Bishop Verot Mission Statement was recently revised by the Strategic Planning Committee, a team of Verot stakeholders working to plan for our future success. The revision focuses on our building relationships centered on faith, learning, and leadership while cultivating a spirit of service. In this edition of the B&G you will see how this mission statement is proven true, including students growing in their faith at the Diocese of Venice Youth Rally on page 13. Students also stepped up to the challenge, sharing their gifts through service to others with the Box of Joy project on page 14. The spirit of service is not only evident in our students, but in our many alumni and benefactors as well. The Giving Guide highlights the many scholarship funds, set up in memory of past Vikings, to share their blessings and offer opportunities to future Vikings (page 9). The new Alumni Association is being led by two alumni who have stepped up to offer their talents to reconnect Vikings to one another and to their alma mater (page 38). You may recognize a number of alumni on page 16, where the 2018 -2019 School Board is introduced. And Jeff Brown, the new Director of Development, answered the call accepting the challenge to work to secure a future for Vikings for decades to come (page 10). Looking forward to 2019, there are many ways for the Verot family, past and present, to be involved and show support for Bishop Verot. The 5th Annual Verot Viking 5K Fun Run will be held on January 26 on the Verot campus. The course is certified by FHSA Starting Official Derek Moore and you may register the day of the event (more information at bvhs.org/5k-fun-run). For our future Vikings and their families the annual Open House will be held on Tuesday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. Please be sure to invite your friends and family with middle school aged children to join us. May your 2019 be filled with God’s blessings and may you continue to always bleed black and gold. Enjoy this edition of the B&G!

oday’s Bishop Verot Catholic High School student measures among the brightest in the nation, with SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement scores well above the national average. Our students are indeed prepared to meet the challenges of a competitive university environment and have the drive and discipline to become the next generation of leaders in the Southwest Florida community and beyond. The cost of educating our students has risen as technology and other factors have dramatically altered the educational landscape. Bishop Verot has strived to limit tuition increases to ensure financial challenges do not become an obstacle for our families. The single most effective way you can ensure all qualified students are able to attend Bishop Verot Catholic High School is through your financial support. There are many ways to support Bishop Verot; your gift of a Catholic education impacts students for the rest of their lives.
Annual Fund
The Bishop Verot Annual Fund is the foundation of the community support for our school, supporting such initiatives as technology enhancements, tuition assistance, and campus improvements. The campaign asks for support from our Catholic community, alumni, current and former parents, and friends. Your gift of any amount may be designated to the area you are most passionate about or where it is needed most, the choice is yours. Every dollar donated to Bishop Verot is directly supporting our mission to build a community of faith and learning.

Adopt – A - Student
Currently, more than 40% of our families request need-based tuition assistance. Assistance is not covered by any outside group and must be attained through Bishop Verot’s fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, we are unable to meet everyone’s request. Contributing to the Adopt – A - Student program will allow you to make the greatest impact in the lives of our students by ensuring a solid education in a faith-filled environment. Tuition for the 2018-2019 school year is $11,750.

Endowed Scholarships
The purpose of an endowment is to provide ongoing support for the current and future activities of Bishop Verot and its students. It is, therefore, a perpetual, self-sustaining source of permanent funding. Each year, a portion of the endowment’s earnings are paid out, while the principal is retained for future growth. As a result, it is imperative the endowment grow its investment assets sufficient to support an annual spending stream of the endowment in perpetuity. The two key components required for the endowment to grow are new gifts and investment performance. Bishop Verot currently has ten endowed scholarship funds valued at over $2.9 million, which provide over $100,000 in scholarships each year. Carl Kistel Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2000 Income used to provide financial assistance for a qualified student to attend BVHS. Rob Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2000 Income used to provide financial assistance for a qualified student to attend BVHS. Jacob Alderman Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2003 Income used to provide financial assistance for a qualified student to attend BVHS.

Answering the Call….
Verot’s New Director of Development
I
n last summer’s edition of the B&G, Principal Dr. Denny Denison penned a letter inviting our alumni to consider the challenge of joining the Verot family in a key leadership role. The vision for the next director of development was to not only promote and fundraise but to excite and engage the Verot community. We were pleased to have Mr. Jeff Brown answer the call. Jeff graduated from Bishop Verot in 1980. When faced with the high school choice for his son he was excited for him to experience the same environment and have the opportunity to create his own fond Viking memories. It was during his time as a Verot parent Jeff reconnected to his alma mater. He volunteered his time joining many advisory committees, including the School Board, hoping to make a difference in the future of the school. Sit down with him to talk for just a few minutes and you immediately notice his passion for Bishop Verot is evident, even contagious.
the traits needed to be successful in both my personal and professional life.
You have been a great supporter of Bishop Verot in the past, what fuels this passion? I had a very positive experience while attending Verot and my son did as well. Over the years I have witnessed what the Verot family can accomplish. There is always a strong sense of family when the Verot community comes together for an event, fundraiser, or when someone is in need. Our school instills faith, leadership, and the confidence to attain the goals of our students. Being involved as a volunteer and now as an employee, I hope
What is your fondest memory of Verot? When I look back on my high school days my best memories, along with life lessons learned, are from the many hours spent on the football field. Playing football helped me to develop leadership skills, the value of teamwork and cooperation, and forge many lifelong friendships. The many positive role models and mentors helped to form

to help continue the successes of our students and school. I am proud to be part of the Verot family.
What motivated you to accept the challenge to serve as Director of Development? Over the years, I have often thought about working at Verot. As I became more involved as a volunteer, beginning in 2011 when my son attended Verot, I learned more about the accomplishments of the school and its students. I have been an active member of the Student Life and Catholic Identity committee, the Marketing committee, and served on the School Board. I was amazed, and still am, to see how many Verot graduates return to the school as teachers, coaches, volunteers, and supporters.
What do you hope to accomplish in your new role? I plan to continue to successfully run events like the Annual Gala and our 5K Run and to create awareness of the school’s accomplishments within our community. Verot has over 50 years of graduates and with our newly formed Bishop Verot Alumni Association, I would like to see more alumni involvement with our events. A
theme prevalent in the Pontificate of Pope Francis is one of Pastoral Accompaniment. This is the notion those who have care over others need to not just preach and give direction, but need to enter the lives of those they serve and learn to be with them, walk with them, and guide them on the way. As the Holy Father observed at World Youth Day 2013, “We need a church capable of walking at people’s side, of doing more than simply listening to them; a church that accompanies them on their journey; a church able to make sense of the ‘night’ contained in the flight of so many of our brothers and sisters from Jerusalem; a church that realizes the reasons why people leave also contain reasons why they can eventually return. But we need to know how to interpret, with courage, the larger picture. Jesus warmed the hearts of the disciples of Emmaus.”

It is all about accompaniment, relationship, centered in the person of Jesus Christ, who loves with a radical, unending love and invites us to relationship with himself. Live Jesus! BV
In fostering relationships with students, this has been our approach at Verot. Knowing the teenage years, for those walking through them, can feel far from “the best years of your life” it is important our teens know they are not alone. Through our house system students interact with others beyond their grade and have an opportunity to build a relationship with a faculty member serving as their house mentor. At Verot, we also facilitate spiritual events such as the Live Jesus Retreat encouraging a personal encounter and accompaniment. Many of our alumni who have attended retreats will be able to relate to the phrase most often heard after a student sharing, “You never know what someone is going through.” In my time at Verot, I am often blown away to find out even the most calm, intelligent, social, athletic, and scholastically successful students are facing lives touched by addiction, abuse, loss, serious illness, or other disturbing situations. While I wish we could fix every situation, it is a gift to know what we can offer - accompaniment. We can show the students they are not alone, they are loved, and introduce them to the peace a relationship with Christ brings. Catholics in Action – Be Courageous! Stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. ~ 1 Corinthians 16:13 In November, 16 members of the Catholics in Action club participated in the Diocese of Venice Youth Rally 2018. Joining hundreds of young people from throughout the diocese, students were welcomed by Bishop Dewane and introduced to this year’s theme, Be Courageous. Speaker Jared Zimmerer inspired participants to “Be Courageous in Mind, Body and Spirit” and was later joined by Mari Pablo encouraging the audience to become a man or woman of God. The day also included inspirational music by the PJ Anderson Band, a vocations talk with Fr. Eric Scanlan and Sr. Peace, O.P., and a college fair. The event concluded with Eucharistic Adoration and a procession to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for the celebration of Mass with Bishop Dewane. “I had a lot of fun at the Youth Rally. It was an amazing experience and I’m glad I had the chance to go all four years while at Verot. It’s a good time to grow with your faith with other Verot students I have never really had the chance to get to know. As a senior, it makes me happy to see other students from Verot coming to the Youth Rally to be a part of something so spiritual.” ~ Emily Mathis ’19
“I had a great time at the youth rally, as it was my first one ever. Going to the youth rally was an incredible experience, because I was able to see how faith can help so many people. It was amazing to see how many people came together to celebrate Jesus Christ.” ~ Lindsey Stayoch ’20 “I thought that this year’s youth rally was overall a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested who hasn’t gone before. haring God’s love and service to others are a vital part of the mission of Bishop Verot. This past Christmas, our students were given the opportunity to be shining examples of both of these principles and rose to the challenge. Cross Catholic Outreach organizes the Box of Joy project by recruiting participants willing to provide full Christmas boxes as well as cover the shipping costs in an effort to spread the joy of Christmas. Boxes of Joy are then sent to impoverished children in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and El Salvador. The school-wide project resulted in over 270 boxes donated, spreading the spirit of Christmas and sharing God’s love with those less fortunate. BV

Michael Larrea ’95 is in his fourth season as head coach after 11 years as assistant coach. Michael also played soccer while attending Verot. He received is PharmD in 2001 from the University of Florida. His wife Shannon is the Director of Education Technology at Bishop Verot and previously taught in the Science department for 12 years. Michael and Shannon have two children, Nathan ’21 and Audriana ’23.

Randy Zavada ’77, and his five children (’01-’10) are graduates of Bishop Verot. Coach Zavada is beginning his 21st year at Verot and 15th year as head coach. Over the past 14 years the Lady Vikings have won 12 district titles and two regional titles, while making five State Elite 8 and two Final Four appearances. Randy, and his wife Lora, are graduates of Loyola University of New Orleans.

Coach Herting is in his 20th year as the Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach, where he has had over 400 career wins, making him Verot’s winningest coach. Coach Herting has won more play-off games than any boys basketball coach in the history of Southwest Florida (16 play-off wins).Verot has won nine district championships in the last 15 years and has been to six Elite 8’s.Verot has advanced to the state play-offs 12 of the last 14 seasons. Coach Herting has been named SW Florida Coach of the Year five times. He has a BA from the University of Sioux Falls (SD) and a MS from Mississippi State University.

Mark Kramer is in his 8th year as the Varsity Head Coach for the Bishop Verot Lady Vikings Basketball team. He is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. During his tenure the Lady Vikings have claimed two district titles. Coach Kramer resides in Ft. Myers with his wife Denise, and their five children; Taylor ’11, Jessica ’14, Cassidy ’16, Mackenzie ’19, and Payton ’21.

Head Coach John Mohring
John Mohring is in his second season as Head Coach of the Girls Weightlifting team. Coach Mohring has a Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Arkansas. After earning All American Team Honors in 2005 and 2006 for football at Georgia Southern, Coach Mohring signed and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Amy Glasgow enters her fourth year coaching at Bishop Verot. Amy was born and raised in Plover, Wisconsin and served in the United States Navy. She works for Cemex USA and enjoys working in the community. Amy and Cris, her husband of 21 years, have three children; Trevor ’16, Bryce ’17, and Harley ’19. STAYING CONNECTED...BV ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Our alumni in southwest Florida were busy as 2018 came to a close, with the Alumni Association hosting several fun events. Oktoberfest at the Edison The Alumni Association hosted a festive event with cornhole, German themed food and drink, and fun prizes. In attendance were alumni from a wide range of graduating classes. The highlight of the night was seeing over 15 alumni attend from the class of 1968 who were celebrating their 50-year reunion the same weekend.
Ugly Christmas Sweater Happy Hour at Marlin’s Brewhouse Surrounded by old friends and new ones, alumni came together for an ugly Christmas sweater themed happy hour at Marlin’s Brewhouse (owned and operated by BV alumnus, Tim Frederic ’96). The attendees enjoyed a delicious nacho bar and great craft beers. To close out the night, Jeanie (Dean) Richards ’83 was awarded alumni swag for wearing the best Christmas sweater.
Christmas Crafting at Board & Brush It was a fun filled morning of DIY-ing at the Alumni Association’s Board & Brush event in December. Crafting alongside friends and family with Christmas music playing in the background was the perfect way to kick off December and get everyone in the holiday spirit!

ALUMNI NEWS Samantha (Petrozzi) Zavada ’13 Sami and Cody Zavada ’13 are excited to announce their marriage. The couple was married on August 4th, 2018 at The Church of The Resurrection of Our Lord with a reception at the Sidney Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers, Florida. Sami and Cody met freshman year at Bishop Verot and began dating in their senior year. Sami earned her bachelor’s degree from UCF in Biomedical Sciences in 2017 and is now studying to be a Physician Assistant at Nova Southeastern University. Cody graduated from UCF in 2018, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Integrated Business, along with an Associate degree in Fire Science from FSW. Cody is currently working in Bonita Springs as an office manager for Zavada Allstate, Inc.
In Memory of Mrs. Ellen Von Arx Mrs. Ellen Von Arx was a long time Mathematics teacher and National Honor Society moderator at Verot from 1977 – 2000. After her retirement she went on to teach at Edison State College. She passed away in August of 2001. To commemorate her dedication to Bishop Verot, her family recently bequeathed a gift to the Mathematics Department. A personalized brick has been laid in the newly renovated concession area of Viking Stadium in her honor.
Cassandra Almeida ’09 Cassi earned her Doctor of Chiropractic in 2017 from Life University in Atlanta, Georgia. She resides in Denver, Colorado where she has opened her own practice. Dr. Almeida enjoys life in the mountains with her German shepherd, Jack.
Joseph Almeida III ’11 Joey opened his own business, Joey’s Custard, in June of 2016 on Sanibel Island, Florida. His shop has risen to Trip Advisors #1 ranked family place on Sanibel for 2018. Joey was also one of Naples Herald’s 40 Under 40 in October, 2018. He loves his customers and enjoys building his business.

Epperson was a member of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox, serving as the organization’s Minor League catching coordinator. Epperson was a member of the Red Sox major league coaching staff, as well, and is consistently cited by Red Sox catchers as a major part of their growth behind the plate. The 1990 Verot grad has been a member of the Boston organization for over a decade, serving as a manager, coach, and in his current capacity working with catchers across levels.
Beach saw time for the Boilermakers throughout the season, helping Purdue to a secondstraight bowl appearance, a matchup with Auburn in the Music City Bowl. The offensive lineman was listed on the Boilermakers’ depth chart for the entirety of the season, aiding Purdue in a six-win season that included a news-making victory over Ohio State in October and a second-place finish in the West Division of the Big Ten.
The sophomore completed her second year playing for the Crimson, who have won at least ten matches in both of her seasons on campus. Mabry finished third in the Ivy League in service aces, and recorded 200 kills and 155 digs. She recorded three doubledoubles during the season, including a 15 kill and 13 dig performance in a five-set victory over Brown on October 12. Both of her top attacking matches of the season came against Brown, with 15 kills in both matches.

In the first eight games of the season for the Pioneers, the sophomore guard has seen the court in each game. Woolam posted her top performance of the young season on November 30, when she knocked down three-pointers and scored nine points in a 62-57 defeat against Lake Forest. As of December 7, Woolam was third on the team in three-pointers made and second in threes attempted.
The former district and regional champion for the Vikings began her collegiate swimming career for the Owls, gaining top-five finishes against Florida in both the 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard IM in her collegiate debut. Clifton also finished in the top eight in the 200-yard breaststroke in meets against North Florida and Gardner-Webb, and qualified for the C-final in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.55) at the Patriot Invitational. The freshman has competed throughout the fall and early winter for the Owls.

SCHOOL NOTES Annual College Fair After a smaller version of the College Fair last year due to Irma, the School Counseling Department reinstituted the tradition of hosting the largest private College Fair on a school campus in the area. With over 60 college and university admission representatives in attendance, students were able to learn more about the many opportunities available to them to further their education.
National Honor Society Leadership Conference Members of Verot’s NHS traveled to Orlando to participate in the two day Leadership, Experience, and Development (LEAD) Conference. Participants heard from several speakers offering leadership skills development and encouraging improvement in their school culture and community. Students also collaborated with other members from throughout the country to share ideas. While there, students met up with members of St. Francis Xavier’s Junior National Honor Society also in attendance.
2nd Annual New York City Art Museum Tour Students Taylor Gabrovic, Megan Piller, Gabriela Perez, Lily Rafacz, Savannah Parker, Kalani Yap, Kaili Yap, and their families had the opportunity to venture to New York City for private tours at both The Frick Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The timing of this trip is perfect for also enjoying the Christmas festivities such as Rockefeller Center with the magnificent tree and ice skating; the gazing at the decorated windows of Fifth Avenue; lighting a candle in St. Patrick’s Cathedral; walking through neighborhoods in Chinatown and Little Italy, and experiencing the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City or one of the Broadway shows.

SCHOOL NOTES Claire Sattler Wins Jeopardy’s Teen Tournament Claire Sattler, a Bishop Verot senior, was the first place winner on Jeopardy’s Teen Tournament. The final three episodes of the November tournament were shown in the Anderson Theater, where Claire was joined by fellow Vikings and fans cheering her on as she competed. The show was filmed in August and Claire was sworn to secrecy as to the outcome, proving her to not only be a fierce competitor but a fabulous actress as well. Congratulations Claire!
Senior Athletes Commit to Collegiate Athletics Bishop Verot held a celebratory signing for our senior athletes continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Congratulations to Charlotte Terry, committing to play basketball at Limestone College, Hannah Van Dress committing to swim and Lander Peck to play soccer at FGCU, Meagan Brown, playing soccer for Palm Beach Atlantic, and Bryhde Camron, also playing soccer for the University of Louisiana – Lafayette. Baseball players Fletcher Reynolds committed to Eckerd College and Matt Powell to the University of Florida.
Prayer Walk – 40 Days for Life Students participated in the annual 40 Days for Life Prayer Walk in October. The event began with Bishop Dewane celebrating Mass at the Church of the Resurrection. Students led the praying of the Rosary after the procession to the College Parkway site. BV
