Letter from the Editor

As you welcome another class of graduates to alumni status, take a look at who they are and where they are going, starting on page 7. This hard-working class earned over $15 million in scholarship offers, including taking advantage of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. They also stepped up in the Community/House System, leading in the overall success of the program as we have taken it to new levels in the past year. Their mentoring of the younger students will also insure the continuing growth going forward. Most exciting, though, is the preparation they will head off to college with - both academically and socially - guiding their transition, acclimation, and success.

As we celebrated the Class of 2024 during the Graduation ceremony, we also celebrated those families who have had four or more children graduate from Bishop Verot Catholic High School. This year four families were recognized – check them out at the bottom of the page.

Viking Creed As members of the Verot family, we will always support our fellow Vikings, defend our traditions, honor our legacy, and Bleed black and gold.

We are Verot!

The end of the school year also means saying goodbye. Maria Barbato is retiring after dedicating 35 years to countless Vikings (page 14). She will be greatly missed!

Bishop Verot continues to see record growth as both applications and enrollment are at an all-time high. As we strive to offer the opportunity for a Catholic education to as many applicants as possible, this also means overcoming the challenges the increase brings. As you can see beginning on page 20, we have a long list of Lifetime Benefactors as well as supporters who have given in this past fiscal year. It is our hope that you will be inspired to join the list as the support of our alumni is tremendously important to our continued success.

Letter from the Principal As another school year comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude and pride reflecting on the remarkable journey we have shared at Bishop Verot. Our accomplishments this year have been a testament to the strength, dedication, and spirit of our school community, grounded in our shared Catholic faith.

This academic year, our students excelled in numerous ways. Our graduating class achieved record college scholarships in excess of $15 million, a reflection of their hard work and the exceptional support from our faculty. I would be remiss not taking this opportunity to recognize and thank Maria Barbato for her incredible commitment not only to the Class of 2024, but to the thousands of students she helped through the college admissions and scholarship application process over the course of her 35-year career at Verot. While we will miss Maria next year, we wish her the absolute best as she retires at the end of this year.

Once again, this year our athletic teams exemplified the competitive spirit we’ve come to expect at Bishop Verot with a number of District and Regional titles. The culmination of the athletic season was a trip to the Final Four for our Baseball team. This was the first time the Baseball boys made a State final appearance in eight years, so in true Verot fashion the Vikings descended on Hammond Stadium in 9 buses and 5 vans with nearly 500 adoring fans. The Theater Program also had a stellar year with a record number of students performing on stage in Mary Poppins. This amazing production featured Hannah Cruz as the lead flying across the stage in the Anderson Theater.

Our mission to develop leaders in Christ’s image has been at the forefront of our activities. Our students participated in over 25,000 hours of community service, supporting various charitable organizations throughout Lee County. Through retreats, liturgies, and weekly Worship gatherings, they have deepened their spiritual lives and their understanding of what it means to love others as God has called us to do.

We have been blessed by the continued support and involvement of our alumni.

Your contributions, whether attending athletic events or theatrical productions, speaking to students at our annual Career Day, or through generous donations, your contributions have significantly impacted our ability to provide a quality, faithfilled education. Your legacy inspires our current students and fosters a strong sense of community.

As we look forward to the next academic year, we remain committed to our mission of providing a rigorous academic program infused with the values of our Catholic faith. We are excited about the upcoming renovations to meet the needs of record enrollment. As we continue to grow and thrive, we will need the support of the greater community more than ever. We encourage you to learn how to make a difference in the lives of Vikings for generations to come.

Leaving a Legacy Class of 2024

T

he Class of 2024 continued the tradition by stepping up to Leave a Legacy. Seniors were invited and encouraged to make their first gift to their alma mater and celebrate the gift during Graduation. Participating seniors received a commemorative cord and stole to be worn during the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation Ceremony.

As St. Francis of Assisi says “For it is in giving that we receive.” So, thank you again to these seniors who ended their high school careers by immediately beginning their legacy! BG

Celebrating

M

aria Barbato joined the Verot family in 1989 in the Athletic Department after graduating from Muskingum University in Ohio.

“My very first interview out of college was at Cardinal Mooney in Sarasota. A few days after interviewing, I was contacted by Fr. Thomas Hopkins, OSFS; the Principal at Verot asking if I would like to interview for a position here. I was puzzled at how he got my name so I asked him, and he said Cardinal Mooney recommended me. I paused and then stated, “So, I guess I didn’t get the position at Mooney then!” We both chuckled and the rest is history!”

In addition to coaching Girls Volleyball, Softball, and Basketball, Maria served as the Physical Education and Health teacher.

In her first few years she also taught Typing, Aerobics, Team Sports and Environmental Science. It is safe to say she easily knew every student at Verot!

In her 3rd year, she transitioned into Guidance part-time.

The newly found passion ignited her career path as she looked to further her education in counseling. As she pursued a master’s degree, she also focused her coaching on the Track & Field team, where she coached alongside legends Fr. Joe and Fr. John Beattie.

“I will forever remember the prayer by Fr. John & Fr. Joe Beattie after every track meet, which is also still used at many events and a prayer I will carry with me, always... May green be the grass you walk on, may blue be the sky above you, and may true be all of the Vikings who support and surround you.”

In 1998, she earned her master’s degree in Counselor Education from the University of South Florida and moved into the Guidance Department full-time, alongside Bill Stejskal. She also stepped away from coaching to focus more time on the counseling role.

She did, however, serve as Football Ticket Manager, ran the clock for basketball games, and scorekeeper for volleyball.

In 2018, Maria was named Director of School Counseling and continued to concentrate on helping seniors navigate the college process. She introduced the Naviance program, a career and college planning tool, to the entire student body. She also started College Application Planning Sessions or CAPS – an afterschool program assisting students as they completed the college application process.

I am a firm believer in there being a place for every student; even if that means starting at a college that wasn’t their first-choice institution. Being told no by a college is, in most cases, a blessing in disguise. I can’t tell you how many times students reached back out to tell me how happy they were at their 2nd or 3rd choice college. I believe God truly has a plan for all of us and we end up where we are meant to be.”

Some of Maria’s greatest memories of her time at Verot include loading multiple buses to travel to support our sports teams that made it to States; Singing Sanctuary during liturgies and Go Light Your World during Freshman Retreats by candlelight; the Graduation parades during the COVID epidemic; the legendary JR Redmond starting the Spellamania

tradition; the Graduation homilies by the Oblate priests; watching Lisa Clark revive the Theater program to what it was in the early days when the late Judy Springston was at the helm; and having the opportunity to work with countless colleagues she had also taught and coached; especially Deanna Breen and Kelley Kaminsky who will be taking over as Director of School Counseling (Deanna) and College Counselor (Kelley).

During her tenure, she witnessed tremendous enrollment growth, formed many long-lasting friendships, and impacted the lives of countless Verot alumni.

Seeing the Verot family come together in times of need and celebration in times of great accomplishment are memories she will hold forever!

As we celebrate all Maria has accomplished we also celebrate her future as she begins her next adventure – retirement!

Rising to the Challenge: Challenge:

The Growth of Our Robotics Team

T

he 2023-24 robotics season was a journey of discovery, teamwork, and relentless pursuit of innovation for our school’s robotics team.

Hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition Reveal kick-off on September 9th set the tone for a year marked by camaraderie, learning, and remarkable growth.

The team’s first competition took place on November 11th at Seminole High School. The team was filled with excitement and anticipation, but faced challenges right from the start. Despite issues with the chassis that prevented the robot from lifting pixels, the students showed resilience by adapting their strategy to push pixels instead. This experience underscored the importance of perseverance and adaptability.

December 9th brought our second competition at Arthrex in Naples. The team enjoyed the luxury of a local event and demonstrated significant improvement, although claw durability issues persisted. The experience provided valuable insights for modifications, and the team spent the last days of the semester and Christmas break reworking their robot. Despite setbacks, including a broken claw during the competition, the team’s spirit remained high.

The season began with an energetic gathering on our campus, where four teams assembled for the live-stream broadcast of the competition. The atmosphere was electric, with groups sharing ideas, showcasing robots from previous seasons, and diving into the new game, “Centerstage.” This event was a microcosm of what the season would entail – teamwork, inclusion, fun, impact, innovation, and discovery.

Under the guidance of dedicated teachers, students learned the essentials of designing, building, and refining their robots. Initial tasks involved understanding the rules, assigning team roles, and getting familiar with the components in the REV robotics kits. With a focus on teamwork and problem-solving, students built the robot’s chassis and then designed an arm and claw to handle pixels for scoring points.

The third competition on January 13th at Boca Ciega High School marked another step forward. The team experimented with hanging on the rigging and launching a drone, achieving mixed results. The challenges of lifting a heavy robot and the need for stronger gears led to further redesigns. This iterative process of testing, failing, and refining highlighted the team’s dedication to continuous improvement.

Lion’s Cup Competition

The final regular competition at Braden River Middle School on February 3rd was a testament to the team’s growth. Although they did not qualify for the state competition, they succeeded in hanging from the rigging, launching their drone, and scoring in the autonomous mode. Each success was hardearned, reflecting the students’ grit, persistence, and determination.

Throughout the season, the robotics team learned invaluable lessons and grew both as individuals and as a cohesive unit. By the time they approached the Diocese of Venice Lion’s Cup competition in April, their hard work culminated in a robot capable of performing all intended functions – drone launch, hanging, and pixel pickup – albeit not simultaneously. The team’s journey was a powerful example of how challenges can be turned into opportunities for growth and learning.

Looking ahead, the team is more determined than ever to build on their experiences from this season.

The knowledge gained, the skills developed, and the camaraderie forged have set a strong foundation for future success. With an unwavering commitment to innovation and teamwork, our robotics team is poised to achieve even greater heights next year. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance, collaboration, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. BG

THOMAS RIZZO '15 After receiving his bachelor degree in Public Safety from Florida Southwestern, Thomas was accepted into the United States Coast Guard. He spent eight weeks in bootcamp/basic training in Cape May, New Jersey and celebrated his graduation at the end of May. He will report to his first assignment in New Jersey in June, where he will spend a year. Thomas will continue his education with the Coast Guard to be a Maritime Enforcement Specialist.

Mark, pastor of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Church in Bradenton, is retiring after 43 years in the ministry. Fr. Mark served as a Religion teacher at Bishop Verot High School from 1980-1982 and was ordained during the Class of 1981’s senior year.

n April, the Athletics Department brought back on an old tradition with a new twist. The Athletic Awards Ceremony not only celebrated our outstanding athletes from this school year, but also included some stand-out alumni. Five of your fellow alumni were inducted into the Bishop Verot Athletic Hall of Fame.
