WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE The summer edition is always a special one, as it celebrates the addition of another class of alumni. The 184 members of the Class of 2021 have a very bright future. With 99% of them heading off to college, they were awarded over $13 million in scholarships and contributed over 18,000 hours of service to our community. Please check out the list of graduating seniors along with their academic honors and chosen college beginning on page 9. The Class of 2021 also included a record setting five sets of twins! Congratulations to the Farnsworth, Gerdt, Koll, Mills, and Sprecher families (picture below). In addition to honoring our graduates, we also honor those who continue to support Bishop Verot with their time, talent, and treasure in this edition (pages 18 -29). The continued support of our benefactors allows us to continue to fulfill the mission of Bishop Verot Catholic High School. Thank you! The Bishop Verot Alumni Association held their first event in quite awhile with a Meet & Greet at the Downtown House of Pizza, sponsored by the Dorcey Law Firm (Page 30). And on page 31, check out the picture from the recent Class of 2001 Reunion. The Alumni Calendar also includes the announcement of the Alumni Homecoming Tailgate to be held on Friday, October 22 in the Senior Courtyard. We will be honoring and celebrating Coach Gill as he enters his 50th year of teaching at Bishop Verot. Be sure to plan to join us for this great event and stick around for the Homecoming Football game against Cardinal Mooney. And finally, it has been awhile since we have included the Alumni Sports News and we are happy to catch up with several of our alumni athletes in this edition on page 33, along with our most recent athlete signees on page 35. LETTER FROM THELETTER PRINCIPAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL When the school year began back on August 17th, it was surrounded with uncertainty and hesitation. One-way directional signs lined the walls and floors, classrooms were filled with desks, carefully measured and placed apart, and staff members were armed with thermometers quick to zap students as they entered the building each morning. And, probably most difficult, were the faces covered with masks, forbidding the sight of a welcoming smile. The Verot family has proven to be strong and resilient, forced to learn the hard way sometimes life doesn’t go as planned. This year has been a true testament of how important it is to focus on the blessings and allow the challenges to be a source of inspiration. Joshua 1:9 promises “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” As we focused on all we were able to offer, our athletes practiced their sports after school, the performing arts department rehearsed their planned productions, and traditional events were improvised. Retreats have been the pinnacle of the high school experience, inviting our students to grow in their faith and community. In a year where COVID restrictions created challenges for traditional retreats, students stepped up to lead a very un-traditional Freshman Retreat, in hopes of creating life-long memories for the newest Vikings. And, two very special Live Jesus Retreats were held this spring, for which our upper classmen were grateful. We are grateful for the many opportunities of the past year and look forward to another school year with great anticipation. Blessings,

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Looking back on the past school year there were many obstacles to overcome. Our team of teachers, administration, and staff persevered and created a caring learning environment for our students. The support of our benefactors exceeded expectations. We witnessed an increase in the need for tuition assistance and our donors stepped up and supported our families with the funding. Our annual appeal mailing, along with the donation envelope in this magazine, made it convenient to support the school. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, a new science laboratory/classroom for use by all science classes, including the Bio-Medical Program and robotics will be unveiled this upcoming school year. The new facility will be available to all science teachers and will likely benefit all students at some point in their four years. The annual Gala and Auction went live after last year’s online auctions. The much anticipated event was sold out with supporters anxious to resume in person social events. There was a tremendous outpouring of support from donors and event sponsors, which was greatly appreciated. The Call to Heart raised funds to directly support need-based tuition assistance. Now as we turn the page, we look forward to another successful school year. We will celebrate Coach Gill’s 50th Year at Bishop Verot. We are excited to host our annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate on October 22nd and honor Coach Gill. Please watch for your invitation to support the Annual Appeal in both the fall and spring. And mark your calendars for the 10th Annual Gala and Auction scheduled for March 12, 2022. Please follow our Facebook and website for many other exciting events being planned. Bishop Verot would not be what it is today without the loving support of our Verot family made up of alumni, parents, students and friends. Retiring Teacher Honored with Alumna Status

Written by Patty holmes

rs. Joelle Howe began sharing her love of science with Verot students in 2007. After 14 years in the classroom, Mrs. Howe announced her retirement at the conclusion of this school year. She was honored at the last all school Mass where she was presented with flowers and well wishes for the future. Mrs. Howe has touched so many lives, sharing her passion for the environment and all of God’s creations. I had the pleasure of chaperoning many of her annual field trips to Babcock Ranch and witnessed first hand how she inspired her students to respect nature while giving thanks to God. Not only has she made an impact in the classroom, she has also shared her faith through music and prayer as a frequent leader of Monday Morning Prayer with faculty and staff. During the Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony, Mrs. Howe was presented with an Honorary Diploma in a show of gratitude for her commitment to Bishop Verot High School. She now joins her four daughters - Mary Morgan ’08, Laurel ’09, Jessica ’13, and Hannah ’15, as a proud Verot alum! BV

STAYING CONNECTED...BV ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Fellow alumni, Back in May we were happy to bring alumni together with a Meet & Greet at Downtown House of Pizza. We had a great showing from many different generations, and plenty of pizza to go around. The event was sponsored by The Dorcey Law Firm, Josh Dorcey (class of 2000) and Mike Scott (class of 2004). We are looking forward to our next event, the annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate, which will be held on Friday, October 22 at 5:00pm in the Senior Courtyard. Not only will we be celebrating Homecoming and several classes reunions, but we will be celebrating Coach Gill’s 50th anniversary of teaching at Bishop Verot. Join us for this annual event and help us celebrate Coach Gill’s 50th! We will be serving light finger foods and drinks and have lots of great raffles going on. Annual Homecoming Alumni Tailgate This year’s Alumni Homecoming Tailgate will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021. Plan to join us we celebrate Coach Gill’s 50th Homecoming at Bishop Verot in the Senior Courtyard from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. All alumni are invited to cheer on the Vikings as they take on the Cardinal Mooney Cougars immediately following the tailgate.

Katie earned both her law degree with her BS and MS degree FAMU Law School and in Sports Management Tom is pursuing his at FSU and is currently Florida Contractor employed by lululemon as License. Upon Antonia’s law school She was hired by lululemon following her graduation graduation, the couple will reside in Tampa. from the Sports Management college at FSU. Brockton is from Wellington, Florida and following his graduation from FSU in Sports Management is employed as a Financial Consultant for Symmetry. They currently live in Boynton Beach, Florida and are planning a June 2022 wedding in Fort Myers, Florida.

Camron was a starter for Ave Maria in all eight of their matches, six of which came against nationally ranked teams. Camron recorded her first career point in Ave Maria’s win over Webber International, logging an assist. The freshman recorded six ground balls on the season, and caused six turnovers for the Gyrenes.

In her first full season at Oregon State after transferring from Coastal Carolina, Soto played 25 games for the Beavers, including 16 in Pac-12 Conference play. The outfielder was usually mostly as a pinch runner at Oregon State, scoring eight runs and logging her first two career stolen bases in Pac-12 games against California and Utah.

PALM BEACH ATLANTIC LACROSSE In his first season of collegiate lacrosse, Insolia assisted on two goals for the Sailfish, who played six games during the spring season. Insolia came off the bench in all six matches, and assisted on goals against Tampa and Florida Southern. In the match against Florida Southern, Insolia had his most productive appearance, attempting three shots and recording a ground ball.

COLLEGE OF CENTRAL FLORIDA BASEBALL Cedarburg was one of the top junior college hitters in the nation this year, hitting .379 with eight home runs and 49 runs batted in. He ranked in the top five in the state in RBIs and in the top ten in the state in batting average. At the conclusion of the season, Cedarburg was named a First Team All-State player, as well as a First Team All-Mid Florida Conference selection.

TUSCULUM FOOTBALL Mira played in four of Tusculum’s five games during the team’s spring season. The defensive lineman made nine total tackles, including one sack in a 47-7 win over Erskine. He also forced a fumble in that win, and made at least two tackles in all four of his appearances. Tusculum went 4-1 on the season, and finished the season on a four-game winning streak.

TAMPA BEACH VOLLEYBALL Pfuner helped the Spartans to the AVCA Small College national championship, and played ten matches during her third season at UT. Pfuner earned victories over teams from Eckerd and Florida Southern, and played at the third, fourth, and fifth positions for the Spartans, who also took on several of the top NCAA Division I teams in the nation.

Nychyk’s third season at Ball State came to an end with a conference championship, as the junior posted a 9.850 on the vault to tie for the Mid-American Conference title. For her efforts at the conference championship event, she was named to the MAC’s All-Tournament Team. During the course of the season, she scored a 9.80 or better in all four events (vault, uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise).

Rodriguez had the best season of her collegiate career in 2021, and was named Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference as a pitcher. The senior recorded an earned run average of 2.42, striking out 140 hitters in 113 innings in the circle. She struck out at least ten hitters on four occasions, including a career-high 13 strikeouts in a conference tournament game against Southeast Missouri.

SAMFORD FOOTBALL Mera played in all seven games of Samford’s season, which took place in the spring due to the pandemic. The defensive end had 14 tackles on the season, including a sack in the season finale against Mercer. He also recovered a fumble against The Citadel, and had multiple tackles in each of Samford’s last four games. Over the past two seasons, Mera has played in all 19 games for the Bulldogs.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES ORGANIZATION In the offseason, Passantino moved to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, and started the 2021 season with the double-A Altoona Curve. In his first 23.1 innings of the season, the righthanded pitcher struck out 27 hitters, and allowed less than one walk and hit per inning pitched. He earned his first career save on May 11, following three scoreless innings against Binghamton.

Daniel Vogelbach ’11 MILWAUKEE BREWERS In his sixth season of Major League Baseball,Vogelbach has appeared in nearly every game for the Milwaukee Brewers, who were in first place in the National League Central as of press time. The first baseman had six home runs and 14 runs batted in over the first two months of the season, and had a .343 on base percentage, which was on pace to be the highest of his MLB career.

Live Jesus Retreat The Live Jesus Retreat continues to be one of the most anticipated events of our students’ high school years. While this year’s retreat required some modifications to meet COVID restrictions, students were able to come together to grow in their faith during this life changing event. We give special thanks to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Cape Coral for offering the gathering space for this threeday retreat.

Lenten Charity Drive Service to the community is an integral part of the mission of Bishop Verot. This year has presented challenges with many of the traditional service opportunities being unavailable. To bring awareness of the many needs within the community, students participated in a Lenten Charity Drive to benefit a number of area organizations. Items were collected for the Community Pregnancy Clinic, Laces of Love, and Catholic Charities.
