WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE In May, another senior class of Vikings crossed the stage from student to alumni. They will soon begin the transition to college freshmen equipped with the tools and confidence needed to succeed in the next chapter (the graduate list begins on page 7). They have made many unforgettable memories and the Graduation Ceremony was no exception as they were invited to capture the moment by taking selfies with those near them (check out the picture below). Twelve of our graduates are second generation Vikings and were honored to have their parent take the stage to present their diploma (page 12). Alumni support and involvement is imperative to the successful implementation of our mission and is evidenced throughout this magazine. In March, a number of alumni returned to campus to share their career experiences with current students for the annual Career Day (page 42). In May, the Bishop Verot Alumni Association hosted their spring alumni gathering in the Senior Courtyard encouraging a look at the many changes around campus (page 30). And finally, check out the list of alumni who have shown their support to their alma mater in the past year on page 29. In addition to celebrating our recent graduates, the summer edition also recognizes with gratitude the long list of Verot supporters. The benefactor list begins on page 16 and contains more than 1,700 families, businesses, and organizations supporting Catholic education and the Verot mission. Without this ongoing support, Verot could not continue to be one of the leading educators in the area. Thank you! It is always exciting to follow our alumni and their tremendous accomplishments. Regina Lombardo ’81 recently made history as she was named the Deputy Director of the ATF. On page 14, Reggie shares some of her memories of her time at Verot and how her years here have contributed to her success. And as always, the Alumni Sports and Alumni News beginning on page 40 highlights births, degrees earned, and athletic achievements. Please share your news for future editions by emailing communications@bvhs.org. August marks the start of a new school year – a new freshman class, Friday night lights, and Verot Visit Days. We hope to see you on campus cheering on the Vikings at a volleyball or football game or a swim or cross country meet. Mark your calendar for the annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate in September and the fall Alumni Association gathering in October. And if you know of anyone who would make a great Viking, encourage them to attend a Verot Visit Day, the fall Open House, or schedule a private tour with Admissions Director Jill Rhone ’03. LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT In many ways this has been like my freshman year and what a great year it has been. As a student or a new employee we all learn the ways of the school and as our learning curve decreases we become more comfortable with our new environment. I have been welcomed by my fellow employees and feel very much a part of the Verot family. My first week began with the homecoming tailgate in the senior courtyard. It was a great way for me to immediately reconnect with Verot. I was able to meet new alumni and get re-acquainted with many of my high school friends. The event also served as a kick-off for the classes of 1978, 1988, and 1983 reunion weekends.
We quickly turned the corner and I found myself involved with my first Annual Appeal. The generosity from our Verot family has been very impressive. I have enjoyed opening the return envelopes and recognizing a donor’s name; past alumni, parents of alumni, current parents, and friends of Verot all participating. This year, donors were able to direct their donations to an area of the school they were most passionate about, contributing to the success of the appeal. Prior to our Christmas and Easter breaks, I had the privilege of presenting the topics of home ownership and credit scores to several of our senior economic and math classes. The students were then asked to prepare a budget and determine what they could afford based on a projected income. The topics were well received and I was able to get to know many of the students. Of our seniors, 97% will be attending college next year with 90% attending four year institutions. Bishop Verot has certainly prepared our seniors for their next step.
After the holidays we hosted our annual 5k Viking Run to kick off Catholic Schools Week. Not only did our Verot families participate we also had runners from St. Andrew Catholic School, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, and Special Olympics. Participation in the event has continued to increase and this year was no exception. I was amazed to see how many students and alumni volunteered their time early on Saturday morning to help make our run a success.
In March we held a Luau, our 7th annual gala and auction. This event could not have been successful without the support of our Gala Committee and donors. I was amazed to witness the outpouring of time, talent, and treasure. The Bishop John J. Nevins Gymnasium was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise. Thatched awnings with bistro lights illuminated the silent auction items. Tropical flowers and coconut candle holders decorated the tables for a plated dinner. The DJ played music for all to enjoy late into the evening. I look forward to the next year and all it holds for our school. I will work closely with our parents, faculty, staff, and Alumni Association to plan outstanding events. Please reach out to me if you are interested in assisting with any of our events.

Catholics in Action … Introducing the Director of Student Life

atholics in Action moderator Mark Latell ’83 is working hard this summer as he prepares for his new challenge, Director of Student Life.
graduate, were married by Monsignor McNamara. His family, including their five children, are all active members of the Church of the Resurrection. His daughters are current students at Verot, and his three boys will soon follow.
Mark is quite familiar with organizing student events making the transition an easy one. He has led the Catholics in Action club for the past two years inspiring students to live out their faith to the fullest. He has traveled to Washington D.C. and Tallahassee with students participating in the annual March for Life and Catholic Days at the Capitol. Mark and his club members have participated in a number of Diocesan events, including the 40 Days for Life March. And he has grown club membership to twice its size in two years. Students honored him as Christ the Teacher in 2018, proving he has the respect of the student body, as he shares his faith in all he does.
As Director of Student Life, Mark will organize all student events, including overseeing the House System. He will have the opportunity to introduce freshmen to our Catholic faith as he coordinates the Freshman Retreat, including service projects in the community, and Live Jesus Retreats. He will serve as the service hour coordinator, assisting students in fulfilling their annual service commitment. Mark will continue to lead the Catholics in Action club and will have the opportunity to broaden his reach in this new role. He will continue to facilitate the March for Life as well as plan for future mission trips. And as a fellow Viking himself, his school spirit will be infectious! BV
Mark’s Catholic roots run deep. Before he was a Viking, he was a Falcon at St. Francis Xavier School. At Bishop Verot, his high school years were led by Sister Marlene and then Father Toner. He has attended Defending the Faith in Steubenville and received his bachelor degree from Georgia Tech. Mark and his wife Deanna, also a St. Francis and Verot BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Regina Lombardo ’81 Makes History
T
he class of 1981 may remember Regina “Reggie” Lombardo for her contributions to Student Government as a class representative. Members of the Viking softball team would remember her playing shortstop or pitching from the Verot mound and celebrating their District Championship win. For most however, she will likely best be known for her recent appointment as the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Reggie began her career in 1992 as a special agent in Miami. Through the years she has worked in New York City, Tampa, and Canada, fulfilling the ATF mission of reducing violent crime and responding to mass shootings and terrorism. With each new assignment came greater responsibility, all leading her to Washington D.C. Faced with each

new challenge, Reggie would respond by quieting her mind and opening her heart to see what she believed she was called to do, being of service. In 2018, Reggie was named second in command overseeing day to day enforcement operations and preparing her for the top leadership position. She is honored to serve as the first woman Deputy Director, recognizing the greatness of the position and the responsibility it carries. Reggie hopes sharing her success may inspire and motivate young women who question their

ability to lead. Remembering her time at Verot, Reggie loved her high school years and treasures most her life-long friendships still a part of her life today. Her fondest memories are of the fierce competitions during homecoming week, especially the year her sophomore class beat her brother Raphael’s senior class. Her teachers, including Sister Mary Rose Watkins, Sister Mary Joan Burke, and her dear friend Father Mark Heuberger, all demanded the best from their students. Each have had a profound impact on her life and helped to create the lens she uses to make the critical decisions necessary overseeing a federal law enforcement agency. “Every year at Verot allowed me to experience the true ebb and flow of life and all the challenges that come with finding ones place in the world and where one is called to be. My time here also helped to create the foundation for my leadership style, to lead from within.” BV

ALUMNI NEWS Courtney Vollmer Black ’97 Courtney was recognized as a Lee County Golden Apple Teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. She teaches 5th grade math and science at Allen Park Elementary. She and her husband, Kevin, are both educators with the Lee County School District. Kevin and Courtney have two amazing children, Bennett (8) and Avery (7). Courtney has been selected as a teacher representative to the Space Foundation in Colorado and Space Center Houston. She hopes to promote STEM and space education in classrooms across Lee County. Courtney credits the wonderful educators she had at Bishop Verot with teaching her about maintaining high expectations and achieving excellence.
Breanna (Clay) Hiller ’06 Breanna and her husband Matt are pleased to announce the birth of their son Hudson Dennis Hiller in December 2018. The couple’s daughter Macklynn James is very excited to have a baby brother. The family resides in Bradenton, Florida.
Robert DeMattia ’08 Robert DeMattia is currently serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln located in the Adriatic Sea. This is his 10th year and his area of expertise is Intelligence working for Central Command. He will be deployed next January to Bahrain in the Middle East.
Sean Minor ’09 and Bryan Tischler ’10 reunited at Fort Bragg Two Verot alumni, Captain Sean Minor and the newly promoted Captain Bryan Tischler, were recently both assigned to Fort Bragg, United States Army Base in North Carolina. Both Sean and Bryan are also graduates of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Pablo A. del Valle ’13 Pablo received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Florida this spring. He was one of only 12 graduates earning this degree.
Keri (Lause) ’07 and Shawn Linden ’07 Keri and Shawn are pleased to announce the birth of their son Shawn Michael Linden, Jr. in November, 2018. Keri and Shawn were married in 2012. The couple works in the family business, Modern Tile and Carpet, and resides in Bokeelia.

As an everyday player for the Mariners,Vogelbach has been one of the better hitters in baseball. Over the first two and half months of the season, his offensive production was on par with the game’s most recognized players. As of press time, the 2011 state champion ranked in the top ten in the American League in home runs (17) and on base percentage (.391). His 17 home runs included several mammoth homers captivating the baseball world.
Pitching for the Greenville Drive, Ward has been one of the top pitchers in the Red Sox organization. Over his first 72.1 innings of work, the righthander has posted a miniscule 1.99 earned run average with 87 strikeouts. His top performances include going five consecutive starts without allowing an earned run for the Drive. For his efforts in the first two months of the season, he was selected to the All-Star Game in the South Atlantic League.

Passantino has been pitching for the South Bend Cubs, an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, during his third season of professional baseball. As of press time, Passantino had won two games, posting a 4.24 ERA. He has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the South Bend stable, walking just seven hitters in 34 innings while striking out 48. Over three seasons in Minor League Baseball, Passantino has posted an overall record of 13-2.
In his final season at Wagner, Poland became just the second player in program history to record 50 singles wins in a career. As a senior, the 2015 Verot grad won seven singles matches, and posted a .500 record in Northeast Conference action. He also posted a winning record (12-10) in doubles action, which included a 4-1 record in league play. The final wins of his career came in the conference semifinals, where he won at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles.

SCHOOL NOTES Video Production Convention Verot Vikings joined more than 3,000 students from across the country at the 2019 Student Television Network National Convention in Seattle, WA in March. Students were charged with creating news stories on site to be presented during the convention. Daniel Ogden was honored to sit down with alumnus Daniel Vogelbach, pitcher for the Seattle Mariners Baseball team, for his sports interview piece. Daniel received Honorable Mention for his sports highlights, and Jackson Ames and James Humpel earned 3rd place for their love interview. While in Seattle, students visited the Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and attended Christ Our Hope Catholic Church for Mass.
Viking STREAM Team The final STEM competition in the 8th Annual Southwest Florida STEM Tour was held in April. The STREAM team returned to the Florida Gulf Coast University campus to compete in the Sunchase Solar Go Kart Challenge. The Verot solar go-kart earned 1st place in the relay leg and 2nd place for the entire race. They were also awarded 3rd place in presentation. In the overall Southwest Florida STEM Tour, competing against schools throughout Lee County,Vikings took both 1st and 2nd place awards.
Career Day 2019 In May, another 161 students joined the Verot Alumni family. Most of them will be heading off to orientation at their respective colleges and universities tasked with the challenge of selecting a course major. Discovering their passion is part of the journey to success. The annual career day facilitated by the School Counseling Department and supported by Verot alumni and the professional community offers an opportunity for students to learn more about careers of interest. Presenters share their real life experiences and challenges allowing students to better understand occupations of interest to them. Each year we are grateful to welcome back alumni as they share their educational and work experiences with our current students. The alumni presenters offer a unique perspective as fellow Vikings. SCHOOL NOTES Spring Athletic Signings Five seniors were joined by their family and friends in the Senior Courtyard to sign their commitments to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Harley Glasgow and Briana Guerrieri will both cheer, Harley at Quinnipiac University and Briana at Valdosta State University; Andrew Shepherd will join the basketball team at Wesley College; Jade Soto will play softball for Coastal Carolina University; and Nicholas Salzone will be swimming for Indian River State College.
Performing Arts in Disney The Bishop Verot Choir and Band traveled to Orlando to perform for Festival Disney at Magic Kingdom. Performances were judged by collegiate music educators and the weekend concluded with an awards ceremony. The choir received a score of Excellent for their performance of choral pieces “I Will Lift My Eyes,” “Rainfall,” “Nightfall,” and “Dream.” They also had a clinic with Grammy Award winning conductor Dr. Jerry Blackstone to learn how to improve for their next competition. The students celebrated their successful performances at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom in the days to follow. Model UN Supports the Boys & Girls Club of Lee County Model UN conducts a number of fundraisers throughout the school year to help offset costs for their competitions as well as support a local nonprofit organization. This year, they chose to offer two student scholarships to the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County, providing for two students to participate in the Club’s summer program. The check was presented to Shannon Lane, Executive Director, and Michael Knox,Vice President.
