WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE As another school year comes to an end, we are excited to announce another class of alumni. In May, 186 young adults crossed the stage taking them from student to alumnus in a matter of seconds. Rest assured, those seconds were hard earned, with a list of accolades accompanying them. These graduates earned over $13.5 million in scholarship offers with 60% qualifying for Florida Bright Futures. Nearly all of them will matriculate on to a college or university, with 20 grads continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Not only are these alumni leaving well prepared academically, they have also accumulated over 22,000 hours of service to our community in their four years at Verot, instilling the importance of helping and caring for others. Beginning on page 8, you will find the Class of 2023 graduates along with their honors.

The spirit of caring and helping others continues with the long list of benefactors beginning on page 14. We gratefully recognize all those who have chosen to make a gift to Bishop Verot through the years, ensuring our future. The growth of Verot has exploded in recent years, with enrollment at capacity and waiting lists in all grades now the norm. The demand for a high school that recognizes the importance of the teaching of Catholic values, a rigorous curriculum, and a focus on the social and emotional health of its students continues to increase exponentially. We invite you to secure our future by adding your name to the list with a gift today!

LETTER FROM THELETTER PRINCIPAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL As we come to the end of another school year, it’s a perfect opportunity to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments, growth, and memories made as we celebrated our 60th Anniversary at Bishop Verot. What began as like any other year with the excitement of Freshman Retreat and Football games was quickly derailed by Hurricane Ian. Rather than focusing on the devastation of that time, however, I prefer to focus on the manner in which the Verot family came together for one another and the community. This year has been a testament to the resilience, dedication, and adaptability of our students.

To our families, thank you for your partnership throughout the year.Your involvement, guidance, and encouragement, as well as your trust in the school, have played an essential role in your child’s growth and success. To the Class of 2023, we thank you for the mark you made on our school community over the past four years. Watching you evolve into confident young adults ready to embark on new adventures fills us with immense pride. Remember you will always be a part of the Verot family, and your accomplishments will continue to inspire those who follow in your footsteps.

To our generous supporters, thank you for your unwavering support of Bishop Verot and the invaluable contributions you have made to our mission of providing a faith-based education. It is through your dedication to our school that we are able to continue nurturing this environment, where students not only receive a quality education but also develop a deep sense of moral responsibility and a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

“I t’s Just Different Here” I haven’t been here long – and it really doesn’t take long – to experience what is meant by this simple tagline. The celebrated successes, the unwavering resilience when faced with challenges and the welcoming people make it different. But the passion – the passion is where you feel it.

Verot is special because the people care. The students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and everyone in between. They care. As you flip through this edition and see the vast list of names of people who have given, let it tell a deeper story. Those names don’t just represent a check or cash, but a passion fulfilled each and every time.

Those names don’t necessarily represent themselves, but all of those who followed them. They represent something much bigger – they represent what it means to be Bishop Verot.

As we look around the campus at the Santini Building, Viking Stadium, Swanson Field, Anderson Theater, Bishop John J. Nevins Gymnasium, the Science Wing and Cafeteria – we have accomplished great things over the years.

A glance back at recent years, and we see the Coach Gill Plaza coming to fruition and school security being bolstered. All of these were accomplished by the passionate response of the names filling the next dozen pages, our great Viking Community.

So, whether you skip through those pages or diligently look for names you know, recognize what all those names have accomplished. And then, please ask yourself, what adding your name to the list can accomplish next.

The sky is the limit at Verot, as we consistently see time and time again; so we don’t just ask you, we implore you, to consider adding your name to the list, fulfill that passion, be Verot. I feel it, our students feel it, we all feel it – It’s Just Different Here.

Vikings truly lead in every aspect of life. In the goal to endow the gifts to provide needs-based scholarships for future students, this is the epitome of leaving a forever legacy here at Verot.

With over a third of the inaugural class participating, and a great amount raised, this is yet another example of how

So, thank you again to these seniors who ended their high school careers by immediately beginning their legacy! BV

he Class of 2023 proudly answered the call to leave a lasting Bishop Verot legacy. The Senior Gift campaign invited seniors to make their first gift to the annual fund and receive a commemorative cord and stole to be worn at their Graduation Ceremony.

Chris Gatewood is in his third year as Head Softball Coach.

Coach Gatewood’s coaching career began in 2008 as a volunteer Coach in the local Little League programs, of which he continued dedicating his time and knowledge through 2014. Since then, Coach Gatewood has successfully Managed an Elite Softball travel organization, most recently placing second in the 2020 USA Softball Junior Olympic Cup and placing first in the 2020 USA Elite Select Softball Southeast National Qualifier. Coach Gatewood also previously served as the Assistant Varsity Softball Coach at Fort Myers High School (2017-2019) where he helped lead the team to 7A-State Champions his first year, and back to the final four the following two years. Coach Gatewood has four children, Hailey, Aubrey, Kinsley and Cambrey and a granddaughter, Harper. Coach Gatewood and his wife, Jessica, reside in Cape Coral.

Tony Ventiquattro is in his fifth season as Head Coach for the Boys Lacrosse team. He has spent more than 15 years working in lacrosse of all levels. Mark Latell is beginning his 12th year as the Varsity Boys Tennis Coach. Mark is a 1983 Verot alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. Mark moved back to his hometown of Ft. Myers 12 years ago joining the Verot faculty as a teacher in the Math department. Mark and his wife Deanna, also a Verot graduate, have five children, Danielle ’20, Anna ’22, David ’24, Matthew ’26, and Andrew ’28.

Martin Byrd is entering into his third-year teaching and coaching Track and Field at Bishop Verot. Martin comes from Cypress Lake High School where he also taught and oversaw the Track and Field program. After one year as an assistant and the departure of the former coach, Mr. Byrd would be named the Boys Track and Field coach. Making his focus areas sprinting and field events, the entire track program has seen great growth in involvement and success. In 2023, the Boys team brought home the Private 8 championship, District Championship and its first ever Regional Championship in school history. Coach Byrd is focused on bettering himself as a coach and person in the off-season to ensure continual growth for the overall Program health.

2023 GIRLS TRACK & FIELD TEAM

Coach Jeff Rehm had his inaugural season at the helm of the Bishop Verot Varsity Girls Track & Field program in 2023. Before that time, Coach Rehm served for six years as a Viking assistant coach specializing in jumps and sprints, a position he also held at Lakeland High School (IN), Portage Central High School (MI), and Oasis Charter High School in Cape Coral. Coach Rehm was also head coach for track & field at Oasis for both men and women in 2017. During his tenure, Rehm has coached numerous Regional champions and several All-Staters, including several current Lady Vikings who earned similar honors last season. Additionally, Rehm has coached basketball for most of his 23 years in education, and now heads the Verot JV boys team. Coach Rehm and his wife, Michelle, live in Fort Myers and have four children, all of whom were high school athletes.

Kelly Corr is in her sixth season as the Beach Volleyball Head Coach. Coach Corr teaches physical education at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School and is the middle school volleyball coach.

Her passion and dedication to the sport has included her playing at the collegiate level and coaching for over 18 years.

ALUMNI NEWS Elaine Sarlo ’13 and Vincent Barraco ’14 On February 25th,Vinnie Barraco and Elaine Sarlo Barraco were married at Saint Francis Xavier Church, where the bride’s grandparents were married 75 years ago. Several alumni, including both the bride and groom’s fathers were in attendance. The couple honeymooned in Italy, where they had their marriage blessed by Pope Francis at the Vatican. The couple lives in Fort Myers, where Vinnie works as a professional engineer at Barraco and Associates and Elaine works in public affairs and political consulting.
