WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE The more things change, the more they stay the same. Verot traditions are a big part of who we are and what we believe. The events surrounding the end of a school year, especially for our senior class, are very important. They have spent the last 3 ½ years (some even longer if they have older siblings) participating as spectators in anticipation of their turn. The last day of classes, signing of uniform shirts, attending Grad Bash and the Prom, having their academic accomplishments acknowledged at the Senior Awards Assembly, and Spellamania are important milestones leading up to the final walk across the stage. This year, preserving these traditions will be a challenge but one we intend to meet. After all, we are Verot! The final eight weeks of this school year are looking much different than originally planned. The transition from the traditional classroom to a virtual classroom, however, has been smooth. Verot teachers have been participating in technology training for years, constantly looking for ways to improve and engage today’s student. Little did they know they were also preparing for something like this! Read more about the Verot virtual classroom on page 10. Our teachers continue to work hard to fulfill the Verot mission and Mrs. Lysa Kennedy is no exception. Learn about Lysa and her special award on page 7. On page 14, read about the new Biomedical Sciences Program being offered at Verot. This exciting new program offers students a great opportunity to explore their interests in medicine and is another way we are preparing Verot students for future success. Celebrating Verot alumni and their accomplishments professionally and personally is one of the primary goals of the B&G. On page 8, we introduce Mr. Matthew Roepstorff ’03, this year’s Alumnus of the Year. Alumni News is shared on pages 43 – 45 and pictures from the Bishop Verot Alumni Association’s spring event can be found on page 16. The spring sports season was cut short, with most teams only making it part way into this season’s competitions. The Spring Athletic Guide begins on page 19 and features this year’s teams with the seniors highlighted. Even in these challenging times, Verot continues to meet the needs of its students, offering a high level of academics, even in a virtual setting. The Student Services Department continues to reach out, offering help to those who may be struggling or need additional support, just as they do when the campus is bustling. There is still space available for next school year in grades 9 – 11. If you know of someone who would benefit from a Verot education, please encourage them to reach out to the Admissions Office and schedule a tour soon. As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of your B&G Alumni Magazine!

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT We hope this issue of our magazine finds you and your family healthy and safe. Now more than ever we will find the support of our alumni most important. With the events of this past month, it has become necessary to close the school and implement virtual learning. As a 1:1 iPad and Apple Distinguished School, the teachers and students were well prepared for the transition to online learning. And although instruction has continued, many events and activities have been postponed or cancelled. The annual Career Day, originally scheduled for March, was cancelled. Over 35 professionals representing 33 career fields were expected, prepared to take time from their busy schedule to speak with our students about their professions. Many of the presenters were Bishop Verot graduates. The response from our alumni is always met without hesitation. We hope this year’s volunteers will embrace the opportunity to be back on campus in the role of a “teacher” helping to mold our students by sharing their experiences again next year. Another great opportunity for Verot alumni to be involved is the annual Gala & Auction. For the past seven years we have hosted the school’s largest fundraiser with great success. The 70’s Boogie Night themed event scheduled for the end of March has also been postponed. Many live and silent auction items have already been secured, including weekend get-aways, gift cards for a variety of services, and Coach Gill’s woodshop creations. Many of the donations as well as sponsorships come from both our existing family and alumni owned businesses. Thank you to our entire Verot community for the support of this event. We look forward to securing an alternate date in the near future. Throughout our long history, Bishop Verot has encountered many challenges. We are currently navigating unprecedented times, leaving virtually no one unaffected in some way. And as we move forward into recovery, the support of the Verot community will be necessary. May we all continue to gather strength from the prayers offered and encouraged by the Verot spirit of Non Excidet. As always, thank you for your continued support. Non Excidet,

Christ the Teacher Introducing Lysa Kennedy “This is the greatest honor of my life, because I know it is you, the students, who have selected me. You cannot even imagine what that means to a teacher. I am humbled and grateful beyond words.”

Lysa Kennedy is only in her second year of teaching at Bishop Verot, but she has clearly made an impression on the Verot family in her short time as a Viking. Lysa joined the English Department in August of 2018 bringing with her an infectious smile, great humor, and 20 years of teaching experience. Sharing her positivity for life with a smile (always) and a helping hand are just a couple of the ways she lets her light shine through to others making a difference in the lives with whom she connects.

She shared one of the first things she thinks when she wakes up in the morning is, “Yes, I get to go

to work today at an amazing place like Verot, spend the day with this remarkable community of teachers, staff and administrators, and most importantly, with these extraordinary students.” And at the end of her day, “What an awesome life, what a gift from God.” Her spirit of gratitude makes it evident why she was chosen as this year’s Christ the Teacher recipient. The annual Christ the Teacher Award is given to the teacher who the students see as a living example of Christ, making the Verot family stronger, whose faith in God is evident, and who sacrifices their time and talent for the good of others. BV

Photo above: Lysa is joined by daughter, Nanette Popa (middle school religion teacher at St. Francis), son-in-law, Dustin Popa, husband, Bryan Schaffer, and daughter, Chelsea Kennedy.

As Lysa Kennedy expressed her gratitude and love to the Verot family after the announcement of her award, the love she feels for her students, colleagues, and the Verot community was evident. BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

T

raditionally, the Alumnus of the Year is announced during the annual Gala & Auction in the spring. Having had to postpone the event and the uncertainty surrounding a reschedule date, this issue of the B&G seems the perfect opportunity to recognize this year’s recipient. Matthew Roepstorff graduated Bishop Verot in 2003. He attended Jacksonville University on a football scholarship before transferring to the University of Alabama. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville. After serving with the State Attorney’s office in Ft. Myers, he moved to private practice with GrayRobinson, specializing in Business and Corporate Law.

8 B&G

He has also spent a great amount of time serving Bishop Verot. He began volunteering his time and talents after accepting an invitation to join the Long Term Strategic Planning Committee in 2013. In 2015, he again was asked to serve, this time on the School Board, and accepted. As a member of the School Board, Matt also serves on the facilities committee. “Anytime there is an opportunity to fill a need, it is an easy yes.” His passion for Verot is not just demonstrated by his time given, but

SPRING 2020

also by his continued involvement. He joins fellow alumni along the fence at football games, at the annual tailgate, the alumni table at the annual gala, and at the Bishop Verot Alumni Association events. Many of the people in his social circle are also graduates of Verot and he enjoys sharing memories of his time on the football field, in the weight room, or at the Live Jesus Retreat. In January of this year, Matt married Mairin McGinley, also a Verot

grad. Mairin graduated in 2008 and also practices law as Corporate Counsel for NeoGenomics. Although the couple met after college, they share a love for their alma mater. “Our family is very mission driven in having a Christian education. The intertwining of academics at a very high level of college preparedness and a Christian education, where we could pray and talk about our faith, is very important and what makes Verot so special.” Looking back at his time as a student, Matt fondly remembers teachers like Mrs. Shriner, Mrs, Knox, Mr. Redmond, Mrs. Elmeer, and Mrs. O’Grady. He credits his college success with the time management skills he learned

-General Manager, Dennis Genge

balancing rigorous academics and a busy athletic schedule. The Verot family is grateful for the contributions Matt continues to offer and looks forward to the honor of delivering his award. Taking the Verot Classroom Virtual for Distance Learning

T

his final quarter of the school year has been like no other. As the country adjusts to this temporary way of life, so has the Verot family. After an extended spring break hiatus, classes started back up with dining room tables and home offices becoming classrooms. Vikings were more prepared than many as technology integrated into instruction has been the Verot norm for many years. With textbooks, homework, and class notes already managed on Canvas accounts on their iPad, the transition has been smooth.

Mrs. Lynn Knox had this to say about the first day, “Today was our first day teaching virtual school to our students and it was so fun to see everyone again. Some looked dressed for school and some did not, but they all oozed with warmth and excitement to be part of something again.” And from a parent, “The smile on my son’s face while logged into class this morning talking to his teachers and friends was the highlight of my day.”

Photo clockwise: Mr. Westran at his desk, freshman Josh Comisar attending Mrs. Schlotterbeck's class, Sophia Albrecht checking in to Health class with Mr. Herting, sophomores Madison and Mackenzie Thomas attending class.

10 B&G

Picture above: Junior Alonso Pagan attending Mrs. Dakin's class

Sophia, a freshman, shared, “This first week of online learning has actually gone extremely smoothly for me. Since Verot is an iPad school already, it wasn’t difficult to transition and I was provided with all the materials I needed from my teachers in advance. I miss seeing my friends a lot, but the teachers were all extremely positive and understanding.”

One of the biggest challenges of our physical separation is keeping the Verot family connected. Our SPRING 2020

Photo above:Viking Revival

Catholic faith is an integral part of the overall education of our students and keeping this at the forefront is very important. In an effort to encourage spiritual growth and connectedness, each virtual class session begins with prayer and intentions, just as it would if they were on campus. Father Casey, our school chaplain, has included the Verot family in his virtual celebration of Mass as well as hosted the Viking Revival Prayer Services during Holy Week. While this situation has been anything but ideal, it has some benefits. As one parent shared, “Distance Learning to me is really setting up the true college discipline

where you only meet with classes for a very short time a week and you do the work necessary for tests and exams, but teach yourself. You need to get organized and ask questions when needed, during special hours.” Teachers are missing their students, athletic teams are missing their time with fellow teammates and coaches, and students are missing their teachers and classmates. The cast of Beauty and the Beast is holding virtual rehearsals in hopes of still taking their show to the stage. The Dance Club held virtual tryouts for the coming school year. Senior leaders interacted during the Viking Revival, sharing their beliefs and experiences to encourage others. And, according

to one teacher, students are joining their class meetings early to catch up with one another – one group was even singing Karaoke. Some students have also remained in their meetings after the class time to help one another with work. The adjustment has gone quite well, however, everyone is looking forward to the opportunity to return to campus as a Verot family once again. Verot is a special place. If it was ever a doubt, times like these make it even more evident. BV

The basis of this exciting new program is to lay a foundation for success for students to conquer the global and local challenges surrounding us. To address these challenges, the biomedical program teaches students problemsolving strategies, how to think critically and creatively, to communicate and collaborate with others, and to persevere when something does not work the first time. The biomedical program empowers students with these skills relevant to any career path they follow. Students use the same tools used by professionals in hospitals and labs to engage in compelling, hands-on activities, and

SCHOOL NOTES American Sign Language Students in Mrs. Timson’s American Sign Language classes take their skills out in public to provide the opportunity to sign outside of class. Joined by students from other area schools, they are able to put what they have learned into action as they communicate only through signing with other students and hearing impaired persons in the community. Most recently, our students, along with students from Oasis and Ida Baker High Schools, met at IHOP and Panera. Senior Surprise In celebration of the Class of 2020, faculty and staff delivered congratulatory yard signs along with caps and gowns to each of the seniors. The final weeks of high school are traditionally filled with many Verot traditions including Grad Bash, Prom, Senior Luncheon, Senior Awards Assembly, Spellamania and the last day of classes, including the shirt signing. While it is our hope we can still hold some of these events this summer, this was a great way to show our love and appreciation for the Class of 2020.
