WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE It has been a busy second half to the school year and it is rapidly drawing to close. In January, we were honored to be awarded Humanitarian of the Year by Southwest Florida’s Catholic Charities. Verot was recognized for the extensive community service provided by students throughout Lee County. Catholic Schools Week was also celebrated in January with a number of activities for our students including a Prayer Service. After acknowledging students and their journey through Catholic school, students joined in singing Go Light Your Candle. Senior year is full of “lasts” but this was an exceptionally special moment watching the entire class join arms encircling the underclassmen, and singing with such emotion. It was during Catholic Schools Week the 2019 Christ the Teacher was announced (page 7). Also in January, Catholics in Action traveled to D.C. for the 2019 March for Life (page 10).

In February, Coach Randy Zavada ’77 quietly coached his last Verot girls soccer game, having announced his retirement this year.

Take a look at his story on page 16. The first of three school-wide community service projects also took place in February. On page 12, read about the new House System and the great opportunities it offers, including community service competitions and leadership experience.

While it is not uncommon to see our parents sporting their Viking gear and showing their constant support of all things Verot, it is especially gratifying to see our Alumni return to campus and offer their support. Since the introduction of the new Bishop Verot Alumni Association almost two years ago, the engagement with our alumni has increased dramatically. We were thrilled to see our fellow Vikings running in January’s Verot Viking 5K and reserving tables at last month’s 7th Annual Gala & Auction Luau. The quarterly Alumni Association events continue to see a great attendance from alumni of all ages. Be sure to read the message from Monica and Skyler in this edition’s Staying Connected on page 17 and plan to stop by campus for the next alumni event in May. As always, I hope you enjoy this edition of your B&G. Please be sure to send your story ideas, alumni news, and reunion updates to be included in future editions. I look forward to hearing from you!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Fellow Vikings, Since returning to Verot this past October as an employee, I have seen firsthand how close and supportive the Verot family is. It is very impressive how many alumni come back to Verot to teach, coach, and support the school. It is equally impressive to see the Viking tradition continue as alumni choose to send their children to Verot.

The 2019 Alumnus of the Year is an example of alumni of giving back. Robert Galloway, graduate of the class of 1990, is now a Verot parent, having chosen his alma mater for his children. Robert, along with his wife Tracey, are great supporters of the school. During the Raise the Roof campaign a few years ago, Robert was not only instrumental in securing a vehicle for the raffle; he also provided several vehicles every weekend of the campaign to be parked at the different parishes in the area to encourage additional support. Robert and Tracey’s leadership and support for the Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament contributed to the success of the event.

At the Luau, the 7th Annual Gala and Auction held in March, the number of alumni who both supported and attended the event once again hit record numbers. The Bishop Verot Alumni Association continues to offer opportunities for alumni to reconnect to one another and to Verot.

I look forward to continuing to meet my fellow alumni and building new relationships. As members of the Verot family, you are always welcome. Stay in touch!

Mr. Stuart Westran shared this sentiment before the student body after being announced as this year’s Christ the Teacher recipient.

For Mr. Westran, this award was exceptionally special. A member of the Verot family for two years, he has endured struggles from the beginning. He began his first days in a Verot classroom while he finished his chemotherapy treatments for cancer. As he entered his second year, his wife Susan, a teacher’s aide at St. Francis Xavier School, suddenly fell ill, leaving her unable to walk. For several months Mr. Westran spent his days at Verot inspiring his students and his nights with his wife at the hospital, followed by a rehab facility, supporting her as she slowly regained some mobility. While he gathered strength from the prayers of his co-workers and students, he was also the source of inspiration for those around him.

The annual Christ the Teacher Award is given to the teacher who the students see as a living example of Christ, making the Verot family stronger, whose faith in God is evident, and who sacrifices their time and talent for the good of others. Mr. Westran believes he is at Bishop Verot for a reason, and the Verot family agrees. Despite the challenges he’s faced, he continues to be an example for his students as well as his fellow teachers. Introducing Bishop Verot’s 2019

obert Galloway’s earliest memory of Bishop Verot was as a kindergartner visiting his grandmother, Mrs. Theresa Kellum, working in the front office. The legacy of the Galloway family and Catholic school is a long one, with Robert’s grandmother being part of St. Francis Xavier School’s first graduating class. When he and his siblings became school age it was just natural for them to follow the same path, their parents never considering anywhere else.

On March 23, at the 7th Annual Gala & Auction, Robert ’90 was presented as the 2019 Alumnus of the Year. Robert doesn’t really enjoy the spotlight; he prefers to offer a helping hand quietly, because he feels it is the right thing to do. His pride in Bishop Verot shows through his actions.

As parents of current Vikings, Robert feels it is his duty to help insure the school is as nice as it can be for his children. “After events like Hurricane Irma, it really brings to light the needs of the facilities and a desire to help facilitate improvements.” Robert and his wife Tracey, have offered their help with the annual Athletic Booster Club Golf Tournament as well as sponsoring and supporting Verot fundraising events. The success of the Raise the Roof campaign was made possible because of the generosity of the Galloway family, offering the vehicles to promote raffle sales on campus and at our local parishes.

And now the second generation of Galloways are walking the halls along with some of his fellow classmates' children. The classrooms now have

air conditioning and textbooks are on an iPad but the mission of teaching gospel values, remains the same. And it is by Robert’s support and the support of all our alumni, their families, and benefactors, Verot will continue to impact the lives of students for years to come. BV

Catholics in Action and Marching for Life

T

he Bishop Verot Catholics in Action Club, or CIA, brings together Verot students passionate about their faith and eager to make a difference.

Members are encouraged to participate in the many ministries offered at our local parishes, like attending the recent Reboot with Chris Stefanick presentation at St. Katharine Drexel in Cape Coral. In January, 29 students traveled outside of the Diocese to Washington D.C. to give a voice to the voiceless. Unique from Day One was the March for Life 2019 theme celebrating every life. Prior to the march, students joined thousands of young people at a Youth Rally, celebrated Mass in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and then took to the streets of D.C. to process down Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court and Capitol Building.

Some of the participants reflected on their experience:

Grace Moore ’20 – This year’s March for Life was a beautiful experience. Being able to explore my beliefs while being surrounded by other people so strong in their faith was ethereal. It is hard to feel supported in your beliefs when you can’t see all of the other people

who believe the same thing, but when you’re surrounded by about 100,000 people who believe all life is sacred, it proves impossible to feel alone in your faith.

Samantha Romero ’19 – Participating in the March for Life was one of the most significant moments of my high school years. This trip had the power to change many people’s opinions or make them stronger. When we first left Ft. Myers traveling to Washington, I felt the march was going to be minimal. It was completely the opposite!

Thousands upon thousands of people united together to speak out about abortion and its effects, and I could never be more proud to be a part of the March for Life 2019.

Duane Stemle ’20 – The March for Life was an amazing, eye opening, and unbelievable experience. From meeting new people, to seeing the overwhelming amount of people gathered in one place for the same cause it was truly a remarkable event I’ll remember for a long time.

Danielle Latell ’20 – The March for Life was absolutely life-changing! I enjoyed every second of the experience, from having Mass with thousands of other teens to standing with hundreds of thousands of people as we

marched to support life from conception to natural death. It was incredibly eye opening and only strengthened my beliefs and core value for all life.

Tequon Chatman ’20 – The March was a life changing experience. It’s a lot of people you don’t know marching for one reason they all believe in.

You are all a family fighting for what you all believe is right.

I loved it and really think everyone should at least consider the experience. BV

Verot – Six Communities –

erot is now in the second year of the newly implemented House System. The shift from a Student Government led student body to a family and community leadership model has been very successful. The goal was to provide more students leadership opportunities while also encouraging students to step out of their peer group and build relationships with those younger and older. The student body has been divided up into six communities with eight or nine smaller houses. Each house has a teacher mentor, and a student leadership team made up of one student per grade level. Leaders are selected through an application process, with senior leaders and mentors charged with teaching leadership skills to their younger counterparts.

During weekly house meetings, individual leadership teams plan their meetings based on the needs of their house. Some activities include ice-breaking games, discussions about school stresses, future plans, study habits, etc., and the occasional outdoor game competition. Houses also work together with their community to plan and organize school-wide events for Homecoming and Catholic Schools Weeks.

The House System also includes competitions between the communities throughout the school year. This semester, three of the communities have organized service projects, bringing the whole school together to help those in need. BV

The St. Cecilia Community organized a shoe drive under the leadership of Abigail Clinger. Abby’s experience with past mission trips made her aware of this need. Over 800 pairs of shoes for both adults and children were collected.

The adult-sized shoes were distributed to the United Way and the children’s shoes will be taken to Costa Rica this summer.

Alexa DosSantos of the St. Francis de Sales Community discovered a need while at Cape Coral Charter School where her mother teaches. Because the school has no library, students are limited to the few books available in the individual classrooms. Alexa explained, “Access to a variety of books is necessary for intellectual development and especially important for younger children to develop good reading habits.”

Alexa, and her community leaders Matt Powell and Rebeka Elia, set a goal of 600 books. Over 1800 books were donated during the one week collection period.

One Family The St. Augustine Community planned and organized the annual jean drive, collecting jeans to be donated to St.Vincent de Paul. Kaley Hildebrand, along with her community leaders, collected over 500 pairs of jeans.

ishop Verot held it’s 7th Annual Gala & Auction on Saturday, March 23rd on the Verot campus. The Nevin’s Gymnasium was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise for the Luau themed event. The evening featured the induction of the 2019 Alumnus of the Year, Mr. Robert Galloway ’90. Robert was presented with this honor by Kate (Stejskal) Hamstra ’03, representing last year’s recipients,

the Stejskal family. There were over 90 silent auction packages and 10 live auction packages up for bid with everything from week stays across the country to Adirondack furniture made especially for the gala in Coach Gill’s woodshop. It was great to welcome alumni back for this event with several tables dedicated to the many classes represented.

On behalf of the Gala Committee and Verot Administration, we would like to offer our sincere appreciation to all those who supported this year’s event as sponsors, donors, attendees, and volunteers.

Saying Goodbye to Coach Randy Zavada ’77

A

lumni returning to campus to give back, sharing their passion and excitement for Bishop Verot, is just one of the things making Verot great.

In 1988, eleven years after receiving his diploma, Randy Zavada joined the Athletic Department and the JV Football coaching team. After four years with the football program, Coach Zavada moved to the soccer fields, coaching both the boys and girls JV teams. In 2004, he took the girls head coach position training and leading the Lady Vikings to 13 District Championships, 6 Regional Finals, and 2 Regional Championships. He has seen many of his players continue their soccer careers at the collegiate level, including Kayley Clay ’10 and Cailyn Rizzo ’12.

Kayley played for both Lynn University and Florida Gulf Coast University. Cailyn went on to serve as goalie for the Johnson and Wales soccer team.

“Coach Zavada truly has a passion for coaching soccer which showed during his 15 years at Verot. I grew a lot as a player during my four years. He constantly encouraged me to reach my full potential and ultimately achieve my dream of playing soccer at the collegiate level.” - Kayley Clay '10

“During my time at Verot, Coach Zavada showed us being part of the Verot womens soccer team was not just about being a team, it was about being a family. Win or lose, we played for each other, pushing each other to be our best and supporting each other on and off the field. We always had fun and I would contribute most of my memories from high school to being part of the soccer family.” - Cailyn Rizzo '12 “I started coaching in earnest 38 years ago and coaching at my alma mater Bishop Verot is all I ever wanted to do. My deepest gratitude goes out to the Principals, ADs and athletes at Verot who have allowed me to realize my dream. It has been an honor and a privilege to be associated with so many great athletes who are also great people.”

After graduating from Bishop Verot in 2008, Coach Flores went on to play college baseball for two years at St. Johns River CC and finished his playing career at Division 1 Nicholls State University. Coach Flores’ began his coaching career at Mariner High School where he coached baseball in 2012. He returned to Nicholls State University, as an assistant, coaching infielders and assisting with hitters for three years, where Flores’ infield finished the Division 1 baseball season with the most double plays turned in the country. Flores also spent two summers coaching the Mankato Moondogs, serving as hitting and 3rd base coach for the Minnesota team, part of the prestigious Northwoods Collegiate Baseball League in the Midwest. In the summer of 2016, Flores was Head Coach of The Acadiana Cane Cutters, part of the Texas Collegiate League where his team was runner up in the Texas Collegiate League Championship and ranked #17 in the country.

Coach Rick Hendrix returns to the helm of the Lady Vikings Softball program this season after a four year hiatus. Coach Hendrix began his Verot coaching career as the JV Head Coach in 2007, taking over the varsity reins in 2008. Under his direction, the Lady Vikings amassed 6 District Titles, 3 Regional Titles and made 3 Final Four State Appearances. In 2016, Coach Hendrix served as an Assistant Coach for the Vikings - the first team in Lee County to win an FHSAA Softball State Title.

Coach Hendrix has two children, Ricky and Jordan ’10 and one granddaughter, Hayden.

HEAD COACH TONY VENTIQUATTRO

Tony VentiQuattro begins his first season as Head Coach for the Boys Lacrosse team after having served as an assistant coach last season. He has spent more than 15 years working in lacrosse of all levels. A high school All-American for Carthage (N.Y.) High School, he played collegiately at the University of Massachusetts and SUNY Cortland. He’s developed and coached high school programs, club teams, and made his mark internationally as a catalyst for the Israeli National Team and the Philippines National Team. Most recently, Tony served as Associate Head Coach for the Philippines National Team at the 2018 FIL World Championships in Netanya, Israel. The nation won its first ever international game and ended the tournament with four wins over ranked teams and a No. 10 world ranking.

Mark Latell is beginning his eighth year as the Varsity Boys Tennis Coach. Mark is a 1983 Verot alumni with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. Mark moved back to his hometown of Ft. Myers nine years ago and is teaching math at Verot. Mark and his wife Deanna, also a Verot graduate, have five children, Danielle, Anna, David, Matthew, and Andrew.

HEAD COACH MARY GIBSON

Mary Gibson is in her 13th season as the Varsity Girls Tennis Coach. During the past 11 years, the Vikings have won eight district and two regional titles. The team repeated as Regional Champions, allowing for back-to-back State appearances in 2009 and 2010. Gibson has been named NewsPress Coach of the Year three times during her tenure. In 2012, she was selected by the Florida High School Tennis Coaches Association to coach the Inaugural State of Florida High School All-Star Team for Region 7. Gibson teamed with Naples High Coach Tony Kamens and brought the first All-Star title to our area. Mary has been married to husband, Gil, for 29 years and has three sons, all Vikings – Zakary ’09, Gunnar ’12, and Cooper ’16.

Coach Jorge Fleitas is in his second season as Head Coach of the Track & Field team. Coach Fleitas leads the Bishop Verot Cross Country program and is the Dean of Students for boys in grades 9 – 11. He graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor degree in Psychology and earned his Masters in Psychology degree from Carlos Albizu University. Jorge has coached for over 15 years at Florida’s highest level of competition. Most recently he coached Dr. Phillips High School to a Track and Field 4A Team State Title in 2015. He also coached at his alma mater, Columbus High School, to a Cross Country Team State Title in the 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons. In his 15 years of coaching Cross Country and Track, his teams have finished in the top two spots eight times. Jorge and his wife Angela, a teacher at St. Francis, have two young children Jorge Jr. and Nico.

Kelly Corr begins her second season as the Beach Volleyball Head Coach. Coach Corr teaches physical education at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School and is the middle school volleyball coach. Her passion and dedication to the sport has included her playing at the collegiate level and coaching for over 18 years.

Kelly, and her husband Josh, have four children; JT (15), Jacob (13), Kasey (11), and Kyley (9). Coach Corr hopes to have a successful first year on the sand.

John Mohring is in his second year as coach of the Boys Weightlifting team. Coach Mohring has a Bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern and a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of Arkansas. After earning All American Team Honors in 2005 and 2006 for football at Georgia Southern, Coach Mohring signed and played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coach Mohring has joined the Bishop Verot staff as a teacher in the Athletic Department as well as Defensive Coordinator for the Varsity Football team and Head Coach of the Weightlifting teams.

In the first half of the season, Tufariello served as a mainstay in the lineup for the Sailfish. The senior, who played on four straight regional championship teams at Verot, hit .351 in his first 23 games of the season, hitting two home runs and driving in 12. His home runs came in games against Southern Connecticut State and Chestnut Hill, as the senior went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in in both contests. Tusculum’s 18-10 start to the baseball season, which included a 7-2 record in conference play, was led

by DeHaven, who hit .348 with 21 runs scored and 16 runs batted in for the Pioneers. In his final season of college baseball, the outfielder has been a consistent presence in the Tusculum lineup, and has posted a stellar .470 on base percentage in his first 22 appearances. His top performance in the first half of the season came against King (Tenn.) on February 26, when he drove in four runs and scored two more in a 19-4 win.

Kyle has been one of the most dependable pitchers on the roster for the Lamar Cardinals, who started conference play in the Southland with a 5-1 record. The junior posted a 5-2 record in her first nine appearances of the season, and posted a teambest 1.22 earned run average. Kyle posted her first win of the season near home, tossing three shutout innings in a victory over FGCU on February 17. She followed that up with six stellar innings in a victory over Rhode Island, where she allowed just one run with four strikeouts.

The Gamecocks, who played in the NCAA Tournament last season, started their 2019 season with a 16-6 record, with the 2017 Verot grad seeing major time in the circle. Rodriguez had pitched 28.2 innings as of press time with four wins and a 3.42 earned run average. Her 30 strikeouts amount to more than one per inning during her time in the circle. The sophomore earned victories in the first six weeks of the season against Alabama A&M, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, and Jacksonville.

As a freshman, Filla has been productive during her time at the plate for the Bulls, who held a 22-12 record as of press time. In her first season of college softball, Filla has started in 16 games. The first standout performance of the 2018 Verot grad’s career came at home on March 8, when she blasted a three-run home run in the sixth inning against Wisconsin, putting the then 18-2 Badgers away in a 7-1 USF win. She also added four doubles during the first half of her freshman season, and recorded eleven total hits.

ALUMNI NEWS Robert Jacobs ’93 Robert (RJ) Jacobs has written and published a mystery novel, And Then You Were Gone. The twisting psychological thriller has the main character, who struggles with bipolar disorder, searching for her missing companion while becoming the main person of interest in the case. Robert is a psychologist in a clinical practice and also performs PTSD evaluations for veterans. He, along with his wife and two children, reside in Nashville, Tennessee.

Bridgette Ward ’12 Thirty minutes after successfully defending her Master’s Thesis at Jacksonville University, Bridgette Ward and Brent Theriault became engaged.

The couple will exchange vows on November 30, 2019 at Our Lady of Light Catholic Community. Bridgette works as an ecologist for Passarella & Associates in Fort Myers. Brent is currently working as an athletic trainer for Keiser University in West Palm Beach and will be relocating to Fort Myers. The couple will reside in Fort Myers, Florida.

Ciara (Ward) Strub ’09

Matt has recently joined GrayRobinson, P.A., as Of Counsel in Fort Myers.

He joins the government relations and lobbying and corporate law practice groups and primarily focuses his practice in the areas of government relations, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate law. Matt also serves on the Bishop Verot School Board.

Ciara and her husband Gregory and oldest son Parker welcomed Fletcher Gideon into their family on January 25, 2019. He weighed 7lbs., 10oz and was 20.5 inches long. The family lives in Fort Myers, Florida.

Lisa (Stevens) Clark ’07 Please send any Alumni News to share in future editions Lisa Stevens ’07 and Linzy Clark were married on January 26, 2019 at St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers. Lisa teaches at Bishop Verot and also serves as Director of both the Choir and all theatrical productions. The Verot Choir shared in the celebration by singing for the ceremony.

Linzy is the manager and landscape designer for Green Leaf Lawn Services. The couple resides in Fort Myers.

The celebration will begin at The Keys Bar & Grille in Gulf Coast Town Center on Friday at 7:00 p.m. A 70’s themed evening with dinner and dancing is planned for Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the home of Karen Adkins Globetti (15901 Glenisle Way, Fort Myers). Costumes are encouraged but not required.

SCHOOL NOTES News-Press Hero of the Year In February, during the News-Press People of the Year celebration, Megan O’Grady was awarded Hero of the Year. Megan, a junior, was recognized for her tremendous contribution to the families of fallen officers through her non-profit Blue Line Bears. What first began as a summer reading project, Megan’s vision of helping others cope with loss led her to start sewing officer’s uniform shirts into bears. Each bear includes a St. Michael medal and a personalized patch with officer’s last name and badge number. Megan and her family have delivered over 450 bears to families throughout the nation.

National Honor Society Inductions Every spring, a new group of high achieving students are invited to join the National Honor Society. As a NHS member, students are required to maintain a 3.75 GPA while meeting semester service hour requirements.

Members volunteer as tutors for younger students at Catholic Charities and St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, as well as tutoring their peers during Flex at Verot. A group organizes and hosts Special Populations for crafts and activities once a month. Members also work around the community at many of our local parishes serving in various capacities. At this year’s induction ceremony 63 students were inducted into the Bishop Verot Chapter of the National Honor Society. Additionally, 27 students were inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society at their Induction Ceremony.

SCHOOL NOTES The Viking Marching Band Members of the Bishop Verot Marching Band, along with their families, celebrated the end of their season with a banquet.

Under the direction of Mrs. Linda Burke, the band performed at a number of events this school year on and off campus including athletic competitions and the St. Andrew Festival. During Homecoming Week, the band also introduced the new Verot Fight Song, written by Mrs. Burke.

Model United Nations The Model UN team competed at the FGCU Model UN Competition this spring. The most challenging of their competitions, the Verot team were up against many highly decorated teams, some of which are ranked among the top 100 clubs in the nation. In the special project competition Verot was awarded 2nd place and senior Daniel Ogden was awarded the Bronze award for his massive contribution over the last four years. In addition to these awards,Verot’s Model UN also remains in the top 100 rankings for top clubs in the nation.

Athletic Signing Day Four senior athletes participated in the Athletic Signing Day celebration held in February. In front of fellow classmates, teammates, coaches, and families, the athletes committed to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Garrett Stanley and Amanda Reeter will both be swimming, Garrett for Florida Atlantic University and Amanda for Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Logan McLeod and Joslyn Mira will both be playing football. Logan McLeod will join the Florida Atlantic University team as a kicker and Joslyn will move to Tennessee to play for Tusculum University.

Young Captains for Clean Water Kevin Casanova and Jack Paluck, both sophomores, introduced the Young Captains for Clean Water club this fall. The club meets weekly, raising awareness and educating its more than 20 members on the importance of clean waters and its impact on fishing. Kevin was recently recognized by Fish for Change for being an outstanding leader and conservationist in the community.
