WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE During a recent walk around campus I couldn’t help but recognize and admire the changes over the past few years. While many of the improvements have been to enhance school security and student safety the results are impressive. The addition of the black rod iron fencing boldly establishes Verot as a place you want to enter. And once inside, the culture of the Verot family is immediately evident.

Our new class of freshmen have settled in to their high school, taking full advantage of the outdoor spaces created to encourage student growth spiritually, socially, and academically. The grassy areas, deck, tables, and benches along with the inspirational Saint quotes along the walls welcome classes and individuals to enjoy the outdoors while studying. It is not uncommon to see classes outside measuring and analyzing data or a group of students collaborating on a project. College preparation is an important part of our mission, evidenced by the 99% of graduates matriculating to post-secondary education. The open areas along with the freedoms it offers mimics the college campus environment and offers another reason Verot is one of the most sought after high schools in the area, giving our alumni even more to be proud of.

As you read through this edition, it is my hope you get a true sense of the Verot family. The cover tells a story of how important Catholic education is to our alumni as these educators have chosen to make their mark in the classroom at one of our three area Catholic schools. Read about what has inspired some of these great teachers on page 8. On page 14 two juniors from the Bishop Verot National Honor Society share the story of the relationship between the NHS and Cape Coral’s Special Populations and the positive impact it has had on so many. The Catholics in Action club has kicked off the new year, planning for their pilgrimage to March for Life 2020 (page10).

We are always happy to welcome alumni back to the Verot campus. Read about our new faculty, including alumnus Taylor Marinell on page 16. The annual Homecoming Alumni Tailgate was well attended, kicking off reunion weekends for two classes (page 53). Be sure to check out the upcoming alumni events planned on page 52.

There are many opportunities for you to visit Verot in the coming weeks. The fall play, Sandbag, Stage Left (or One Dead Dolly) premieres November 14 in the Anderson Theater. The recruitment season has begun for next year’s freshman class and there are a number of Visit Days, Placement Exam dates, and a fall Open House scheduled for families to learn more about the advantages of being part of the Verot family. With enrollment at an all time high, we would encourage those interested to start the application process soon. Please do not hesitate to reach out for more information; we would love the opportunity to share with your friends and family all Verot has to offer.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Another school year has begun and we welcome all of our new students to the Verot Family. This is where the deep, rich traditions begin for our future alumni.

Our school has enrolled one of the largest freshmen classes with 203 students and has over 40 transfer students joining the upper classes. Our total enrollment has been increasing over the past several years and we are now at 730 students. Many of us can remember when total enrollment was not much more than 250. This is a great testament to the Catholic education students receive while at Verot.

Whether you are new to the Verot family or an alumni, there are many ways to be involved with our school. Our Viking Pride parent organization is off to a great start. It is a group of like-minded volunteers who assist with annual events supporting faculty, staff, students and alumni. It is easy volunteer; just a few sign-up questions at bvhs.org/viking-pride.

Verot’s annual events are always well attended by alumni, current, and future families. While the primary goal of our events is to financially support the school, they also strengthen the Verot family, building relationships through camaraderie.

The 6th Annual Verot Viking 5K will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 with a shot gun start in Viking Stadium. The event is open to participants of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a competitive runner or choose to walk the course with friends and family, we invite you to join the fun, crossing the finish line also in Viking Stadium. Registration is now open and will include an official Verot Viking 5K t-shirt for those registering early. Find out more at bvhs.org/verot-viking-5k.

If running isn’t your thing perhaps boogieing down to the music of the 70’s is for you. The annual Gala and Auction will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020 in the Nevins Gymnasium. This year’s theme is 70’s Boogie Night so come dressed in your 1970’s attire and enjoy your favorite 70’s music along with dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Alumni support has grown over the past few years and we hope this year is no exception.

Tickets will be on sale soon – start gathering your classmates for an alumni table at our largest fundraising event of the year.

or the 4th year, teachers from the three Catholic partner schools, St. Andrew, St. Francis, and Bishop Verot, gathered together for their first day of the new school year to celebrate Mass, share ideas, and enjoy a friendly competition.

The Verot House System senior leadership team, or core eight, spent many hours over the summer preparing field day style games for the teachers and staff to participate in. With the students judging, points were tallied and Fr. Anthony and Mr. Gulley accepted the victory for

This annual event is not only a fun way to kick-off back to school week for the teachers, it also encourages relationships between the three schools, building a partnership as we all work together towards the mutual goal of educating our students in the Catholic faith.

For our team of over 200 teachers the choice to become educators is a personal one. For the 23 teachers who graduated from Bishop Verot, they credit their passion to the influence of their own teachers.

The positive experience they share as alumni fueled their desire to not only teach but to do so in their FALL 2019

faith at a Catholic school.

Angela Nizza ’13 begins her new journey teaching 2nd grade at St. Francis. “For many people, a teacher could be defined as someone with a red pen in their hand, educating students and sending them on their way. But my teachers were creative, selfless, and hardworking individuals who put the needs of their students before their own. Rather than simply teaching behind the covers of a textbook, the teachers at St. Francis and Bishop Verot pushed my peers and me to work toward accomplishing our dreams.”

Angela continued, “Catholic Schools give each and every student an opportunity to grow into the best version of themselves through a strong foundation in their faith. I want to help provide that foundation at the same school that has given me so much. Mrs. Tousey was my 3rd grade teacher.

Years later, when I graduated from the University of Central Florida, I sat down with Mrs. Tousey for advice about teaching. She continues to inspire me just as she had when I was younger.” And sharing her aspirations, “St. Francis and Bishop Verot gave me so many lifelong memories, friendships, and opportunities that have impacted who I have become. I am so excited to begin a new chapter teaching at St. Francis for the 2019-2020 school year. I hope to make a difference in the lives of my students just as so many teachers have done for me!”

Kelley Kaminsky ’95 joined the Verot family two years ago after teaching in the Lee County School System for 16 years Kelley loves her time in the classroom but this year has added Instructional Technology Coordinator to her duties, allowing her to help students overcome their technology challenges. “I am a teacher because I believe so strongly in the calling to lead a life of service to others.

Teaching allows me to raise others up and to use my talents to the

betterment of my students. I teach with the philosophy that love never fails. All students need our love, guidance, and acceptance. Being able to share these things at my alma mater in this beautiful community of support and tradition is a tremendous honor and blessing.”

Denise York ’82 has been teaching at Bishop Verot for 12 years.

“I moved to Florida in January of my sophomore year of high school from New Jersey. The move was not easy for me and the transition was difficult.

However, my Verot teachers and coaches helped make it easier. They really cared. They modeled faith and compassion. It was the example of those dedicated teachers who saw me as more than just a student needing to learn their subject, that has inspired me as a teacher. I am blessed to be back at Bishop Verot where I can only hope to have the same impact on my students.”

Nineteen years ago, Stephanie Rode ’97 started teaching Kindergarten at St. Andrew Catholic School. “The four years I spent at Verot helped me grow BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

academically and spiritually. I was surrounded by teachers who truly cared for each person and wanted the best for you. You were part of a family. When it came time to apply for a teaching position, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to teach in a Catholic School. As a Catholic School teacher, I am fortunate enough to continue to grow in my faith and help others to do so as well.”

Taylor Marinell '05 begins her first year in the Math Department at her Alma Mater after 10 years of teaching in the public school system. “I knew I wanted to teach from a very young age. However, it wasn’t until I was a student at Verot I realized the incredible impact a teacher can have on a student’s life, not just academically but as a whole person. For example, Mr. Bolton not only taught me Spanish but he also taught me how to be a good person, how to have high expectations for myself, and how important it is to work hard and learn about different cultures. He is just one of so many teachers I had during my four years at Verot who have inspired me to come back and teach at my alma mater. I’ve always strived to be the type of teacher who doesn’t just teach academics but also helps students grow in faith, leadership, and service. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity here at Verot.”

he new school year is off to a great start and the Catholics in Action club is gearing up for another great year. During our recent Club Fair, students had an opportunity to visit with leaders from the over 30 different clubs offered. Catholics in Action recruited many new members who share a passion for discipleship.

The Catholics in Action weekly meetings inspire members to live their best lives and to give witness by their example. They discuss opportunities to share their faith together, planning weekend and after school activities. Leaders are encouraged by the growth they have seen over the past few years.

Diocesan Youth Day in November, the March for Life in Washington D.C. in January, as well as participate in the local 40 Days for Life events. The club is also planning to attend the Ave Experience at Ave Maria.

esus then said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32) As Catholics we are called to be Disciples of Christ, living examples of His love for all people, and a witness to those who may not believe. “The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and spread it” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1816). With the start of this new school year, we invite the Verot family to share in this challenge - answering the call.

“I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)

Disciples are called - Luke 5:1-11 perfectly illustrates this. God always acts first! Jesus came to the fishermen and gave them an invitation. It was only after this invitation to discipleship that our choice matters. Jesus has called each of us. The next step is...

Disciples intentionally respond to Jesus’ call - After we are called, then a disciple must respond positively to the call! If Peter had not dropped his nets and followed Jesus, he would not be a disciple.You can›t follow, if you don›t make a choice. Discipleship is never inherited or accidental!

Disciples love - This is a primary mark of a disciple.

Love of God and love of others. Jesus says that others will know we are disciples by our love for one another.

(John 13:35).

Disciples are fruitful - In fact, Jesus says that being fruitful PROVES that you are his disciple. “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples” -John 15:8.

Disciples are obedient - Go a little farther in John 15 and you find in verse 14 - “you are my friends if you do what I command”. Notice, we can’t be intimate with Jesus and be disobedient. It is a non-starter.

Disciples are taught - In Scripture, we constantly find the disciples of Jesus learning from Him. They listen and then implement the teaching in their lives (or at least attempt to). We too have to follow this model. The life of a Christian disciple is one of lifelong learning.

Disciples follow - The word, "disciple", means "follower". All of our life of discipleship starts with following Jesus. We must do as he did. Love as he loved.

Choose what he chose. “Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him” -Luke 8:1 Disciples keep an eye on Heaven - The life we live now is not our final home. In fact, we are made to live with God forever in eternal bliss. Still, this heavenly home is determined by our decisions in this life. The prize of heaven is a gift we must keep our eyes on, so that we don›t lose the eternal perspective of God. Disciples carry crosses - Discipleship isn't easy.

Jesus puts it this way, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” -Luke 9:23. We should never forget that suffering is a part of discipleship. It isn't merely about feel-good emotions and good times.

Disciples spend time with Jesus in prayer - If we do what Jesus did, then we need to live in intimate relationship with God. “He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” -Luke 11:1 Disciples love and serve God (and others) Think of the many times the disciples were called to serve. Jesus commands his 12 to be the ones to serve the crowds at the breaking of the loaves and fishes, to heal the sick, to drive out demons, etc. The life of a disciple isn't about you!

Disciples make other disciples - Ultimately, we need to do what Jesus did, which means to "make disciples." This was his final command and the one we cannot avoid personally. BV

The Verot Bond with Special Populations Written by NHS members Grace Canzano and Cassidy Marino, both juniors.

O

ne of the many groups serviced by the Bishop Verot Chapter of National Honors Society is the City of Cape Coral Special Populations. Special Pops, is a largely volunteer, non-profit organization focused on serving people with intellectual disabilities. Bishop Verot and the National Honors Society incorporated Special Pops into the In and Out Events List over 10 years ago and it has since become one of the most popular events among members. Once a month, NHS members meet with children from the organization to dance, sing, and complete an arts and crafts project. Through these activities students can develop small motor skills and coordination while Verot students guide them. We spoke to Contract Site Director, Vicki Illenberg, and Recreation Assistant, Evelyn Wilk, about High School Happenings, Special Pops’ after school program, and the relationships it has helped form between students. “It’s huge: the opportunity to participate with kids

their own age and not be looked at as having a disability, looked at just like all of you.” It is clear how much Verot’s participation means to Special Pops but it also impacts the Verot community. Mrs. Dakin, the NHS Moderator, holds Verot’s relationship with Special Pops near to her heart. “It’s the best thing we do.” Dakin says, “They let us into their world, they teach us humility, and they teach us to be better people.” Many students still participate in the event, regardless of the need for points. Students love the feeling of helping out.

Even after leaving Verot, alumni appreciate the time spent serving Special Populations and making memories.

One such alumnus, Kyle Dos Santos, regularly FaceTimes during Special Pops meetings. Kyle graduated two years ago and now attends the University of Central Florida. Even with his busy life in college, Kyle always makes time to FaceTime and see the kids’ faces. The bonds he formed with the kids from Special FALL 2019

Pops impacted him so much he encourages others to try it for themselves. “I fell in love with the fact it was a two hour period each week where we all could forget about our responsibilities and just enjoy the company of these kids. Talking to or understanding special needs individuals is a very important part of life and often overlooked.” Another alumnus, Celeste Canzano ’19, calls the time volunteering a “huge honor.”

Erin Ardesia, one of the current chairs for Special Pops, says, “to

see the kids who come always having a smile on their faces, and I think it is a really joyful thing for Verot students to see.” After attending one of the events for ourselves, we realized the impact we have on them and how they drastically can change our point of view. While in the cafeteria with the Special Pops kids, it is easy to forget they are different. They like to listen to music and be artistic and enjoy sugary snacks just like the rest of us. Special Pops gives students the opportunity to be proud to represent their school. BV

› Jeff Fowler Jeff joins our faculty with 20 years of experience as an engineer in medical device manufacturing. He is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering. Jeff is excited to share what he has learned from a successful career with his students, including showing them which habits lead to success. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Isabella (11) and Elaina (9), and recently adopted a rescue dog named Whitley. They live in Fort Myers and are members of St. John XXIII parish.

› Taylor Marinell Taylor is a Bishop Verot graduate (2005) who joins the faculty with 9 years of teaching experience in Lee County elementary and middle schools. She graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University (West Palm Beach, FL) where she earned a degree in education and mathematics. She has a heart for students and a passion for teaching. Taylor is looking forward to helping her students have a positive high school experience while also helping them work towards becoming the best version of themselves - just as she feels her teachers did during her four years at Verot.

› Molly Buck Molly is a Bishop Verot graduate (2015) who joins the faculty as a new School Counselor. She is a graduate of Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN) where she earned her degree in social work. She has moved home, and will be pursuing her masters of social work through the University of South Florida. She is very excited to be back home and the opportunity to work with the Verot family.

› Casey Scott Casey is a 2003 graduate of Beacon High School in Beacon, NY. He is a 2008 graduate of the College at Brockport with a degree in history. Upon graduating, Casey pursued a masters degree at SUNY Cortland and in 2011 graduate with a MS in recreation management.

collegiate level and served as the athletic academic advisor for SUNY Cortland’s Athletic Department. He was responsible for monitoring and overseeing the 850 student-athletes at SUNY Cortland. Casey and his wife, Nicole, reside in Fort Myers with their three dogs.

In addition to his teaching responsibilities in the social sciences department, Casey is also the Vikings Varsity Baseball coach.

› Eddie Villarreal Eddie has spent the last 10 years teaching Spanish at the college level, most recently at Florida Gulf Coast University where he taught from 2013 to 2018. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor of arts in political science and minored in speech communication in 2007. He then obtained a graduate assistantship in 2008 to pursue his masters

of arts in teaching of language with dual emphasis in Spanish and TESOL which he completed by 2011.

He is a native of Monterrey, Mexico and now lives in Estero with his wife Tatiana, and their two daughters Eva Carolina (9) and Luna Xitlali (5). He also serves as the head soccer coach for the Boys Varsity Soccer team, with professional certifications of the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) as well as the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

Eddie is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Bishop Verot family and is looking forward to providing a high quality learning environment preparing future generations to be successful in life. BV

Coach Vogelbach ’04 enters his third season as Varsity Football Head Coach. In his first outing as Head Coach,Vogelbach led the Vikings to a 5-5 record; then surged in 2018, ending the season 9-3, including a regional final appearance. At press time, the Vikings remain undefeated as Vogelbach ontinues to build his legacy at Verot, supported by the extensively talented coaching staff he’s assembled.

Coach Fleitas, also Dean of Students, is entering his third season as Head Coach of the Girls and Boys Cross Country teams. Jorge holds a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Masters in Psychology from Carlos Albizi University. In addition to his teaching and administrative experience, Jorge has a proven track record as a cross country Head Coach and track coach. Under Coach Fleitas’ Jorge Fleitas leadership, the Dr. Phillips High School track and field team earned a 4A Team State Title in 2015 and the Columbus Catholic High School cross country team earned state titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Jorge, and his wife Angela, a teacher at St. Francis Xavier, have two young children, Jorge Jr. and Nico.

Jason Baumgardner enters his fifth year as Head Coach of the Swimming and Diving Program and is in his fourth year as Verot’s Athletic Director. Coach Baumgardner has won the Girls District Title and has placed second in the region Head Coach each year. On the boys Jason Baumgardner side he has one District Championship and has had multiple district and region individual champions along with four individual state champion titles. Jason, and his wife Jennifer, have four daughters, Sandra ’17, Erika ’18, Deisy ’20, and Laura ’21.

Andy Scott is entering his seventh year coaching the Boys Golf Team.

He originally hails from Kentucky and has trained with world renowned golf teachers such as Hank Haney, Bob Toski, Jim McLean, Phil Ritson, and Mac O’Grady. He has been amongst his peers and students alike as one of the top golf instructors in South Florida.

Head Coach His positive, simplistic approach to golf Andy Scott lessons has helped many players improve their games. Andy has a strong junior golf program which has produced 23 juniors to NCAA Collegiate Golf Scholarships.

Jeff enters his fourth year as the Girls Golf Coach.

Jeff is a graduate of Cape Coral High School and is a Class A member with the PGA of America. He has won multiple awards including the 2006 Teacher of the Year and the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Presidents Award for growth of the game. Nixon was also named the 2012, 2013, and 2014 PGA Player Development Award recipient for the South Florida PGA. Jeff has coached over a thousand students Head Coach ranging from scratch players, beginners, juniors and Jeff Nixon the disabled. Jeff’s unique ability is to be able to adapt to each student has served him well in the 10,000 plus lessons that he has given over the past twenty years. Jeff enjoys sharing his past experience with the Verot Golf program.

Amy Glasgow enters her fifth year coaching at Bishop Verot. Amy was born and raised in Plover, Wisconsin and served in the United States Navy.

She works for Cemex USA and enjoys working in the community. Amy and Cris, her husband of 21 years, have three children; Trevor ‘16, Bryce ‘17, and Harley ‘19. Cheering is a big part of her life and she enjoys coaching JV and Varsity.

Coach David Zukin is in his third year as Head Coach of the Bowling team.

Coach Zukin has been bowling since he was seven years old and a bowling league participant for 35 years. He has bowled two perfect games. Coach Zukin is in his 25th year in education, teaching Algebra 2 Honors and Statistics Honors. He and his wife Chris have a daughter, Laurel.

Linda Burke is in her second year as the Viking Band Director. She has more than 20 years of both classical and symphonic musical experience and education. She earned her bachelor degree in music, majoring in clarinet, from St. Mary’s College in 2008 and received her master degree in teaching three years later. She Band Director is very excited for the opportunity to Linda Burke grow the marching band and go on local and state competitions with field shows in the next few years.

BOSTON RED SOX ORGANIZATION

SEATTLE MARINERS Vogelbach became the first baseball player from Lee County in 30 years to be selected to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The 2011 state champion was selected as a reserve in the game, serving as the lone representative of the Mariners.

With less than a week to go in the season,Vogelbach had belted 30 home runs and was one of just four players in the American League with 30 home runs and 90 walks.

Ward capped off a magnificent season by being named the Red Sox’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year. The righthander pitched for the Greenville Drive and the Salem Red Sox, and combined to win eight games and post a 2.14 earned run average. He was named a mid-season All-Star while in Greenville, before playing the remainder of the season with the high-A team in Salem.

The righthanded pitcher appeared for four different teams in the Cubs organization, rising as high as the triple-A Iowa Cubs, where he struck out eleven batters in nine innings. Passantino posted a 6-2 record overall, and logged a 3.03 earned run average. His efforts were awarded by the Midwest League, who named him a league All-Star.

As of press time, Beach had been the starting center for the Boilermakers in each of their first three games, including a win over Vanderbilt. In his second career start, the redshirt sophomore anchored an offensive line that led the way to over 500 yards of offense and 42 points in the win over the Commodores.

ALUMNI SPORTS Mindie Mabry ’17 HARVARD VOLLEYBALL For the third year in a row, Mabry has been a mainstay in the lineup for the Crimson.

The junior outside hitter was second on the Harvard roster in both kills and digs as of press time. Through the first nine games of the season, Mabry’s best performance came against Boston College, where she posted a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs.

Joe Mera ’18 SAMFORD FOOTBALL In his redshirt freshman season, Mera has seen time on the field in each of Samford’s first four games. The defensive tackle made three solo tackles against Tennessee Tech, and logged his first assisted tackle for loss in the Bulldogs’ victory over then-nationally ranked Wofford.

Meagan Brown ’19 PALM BEACH ATLANTIC SOCCER The freshman has immediately become a starter for the Sailfish in her first season on campus. As of press time, Brown had started four of PBA’s first five matches, and had seen the field in all five. A defender, Brown had helped the Sailfish to three shutouts in their first five games, including a conference victory over Florida Southern.

Sarah and her husband Matthew are pleased to announce the arrival of their twin boys, Theodore and Benjamin. They were born at 24 weeks weighing in at 1.10lbs.

After spending over 115 days in the NICU at Tacoma General Hospital in Washington, the boys came home to their excited siblings, Michael (10) and Madison (8). The family has recently relocated to St. Augustine, FL where Matthew is a professional fishing guide. is a district manager for Paychex. Sarah is pleased to be home with the children after having worked for Staples Anthony Bonacolta ’15 as a learning and development coach.

Monica (Gargano) Hartman ’08 Monica and her husband Greg welcomed Benjamin Whitney into the world on July 30, 2019. Their little Benjie weighed 7 lbs. 8 oz. and was 19.5 inches long. The proud parents reside in Fort Myers and are thrilled to raise their future Viking.

Chelsea and Ben Geroy are pleased to announce their marriage. The couple exchanged vows this summer and celebrated with a reception at the Hyatt Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs.

Anthony has joined the Coral Culprits expedition, analyzing the microbiomes of Caribbean coral in order to decipher potential players in coral disease.

He graduated with honors from the University of Miami with degrees in Marine Science and Microbiology and Immunology. This fall he will begin his pursuit of his Ph.D. at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

SCHOOL NOTES National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists Three Verot students were named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists for 2020. Katherine Kupsaw, Connor Shovlin, and Vincenzo Vall-Llobera scored in the top 1% of seniors throughout the nation on the PSAT test. Katherine is the Treasurer for the National Honor Society,Vice President of HOSA, a STEM4Students leader, and in the Pre-Med Club. Connor is also a leader in STEM4Students, a member of the Academic Quiz Bowl team, National Honors Society, and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. And Vincenzo is a member of Model UN, the Bowling team, and serves as a Lector at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Congratulations to all three of these outstanding students.

Freshman Retreat For over 16 years, freshmen have been welcomed to the family during this very special retreat. With senior leaders mentoring them, students spend an afternoon in the community volunteering their service. Students worked on landscaping projects, cleaned barns, painted, and sorted food at places like CCMI, St.Vincent de Paul, Garden of Hope, Special Equestrians, and ECHO. The pre-season football game was played at home on the evening of the retreat adding the opportunity to join Viking fans in the stadium. Following the unveiling of communities and the house selection process, freshmen, with their senior mentors, paraded out on the field to the student section proudly carrying their community flags. Despite the rain, our newest students joined together with the whole school to cheer the Vikings to victory.

SCHOOL NOTES Perfect Scores Two students were recently identified for having accomplished a rare feat – receiving a perfect score. Connor Shovlin and Madison Tilton, have achieved perfection on the SAT and ACT. Connor received a perfect 36 on his ACT and a perfect 800 on the Math portion of the SAT. Madison received a perfect 800 on the Reading & Writing section of the SAT.

Introducing the BVHS Marching Band While the Bishop Verot band has been around for quite some time, band members are now starting off the 2019 season with something they have never had the chance to do – a marching band show. With its title “Love You 3000,” the marching band will feature three pieces, including “The Avengers,” “Hooked on a Feeling,” and “Black Panther.” Students have worked hard this summer and after school to memorize the music and learn the drill. The band has also partnered with the cheerleading team, providing music for many of their dance routines.

In addition, they continue to perfect a myriad of marching band tunes to help boost school spirit during various events.

The band hopes to accomplish much more this year. Students plan to provide fundraising opportunities, perform in various festivals and competitions (including one at Universal), march in the Edison Festival Parade, and take part in community service events like playing at nursing homes during the holidays. Keep an eye out for these young musicians as they work hard to build a program giving parents, staff, and students a chance to support their fellow Vikings with their new endeavor.
