WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE The cover of this issue of your B&G Alumni Magazine is a little different. While it is customary to feature an alum on the cover, this time we are excited to introduce the re-designed Bishop Verot mascot,Viktor the Viking. He symbolizes what Vikings find important – faith, strength, school spirit, and a “We will not fail” attitude. On page 8, learn how the new Viking was created and take a look at some Viking images through the years. At the center of all we do at Bishop Verot is our faith. The Catholics in Action Club provides the opportunity for students to come together in fellowship, sharing their faith. Membership has increased dramatically and participants are looking forward to an exciting year. Learn more about the plans they have on page 10. With one of our largest freshman classes in recent history, it was necessary to increase the faculty and staff as well. Meet the very talented teachers and staff members joining the Verot family this year on page 11. On page 54 and 55 you can see what some of our exceptionally talented students have been up to as well, including those named to the National Merit Scholarship Program. The Athletic Guide, beginning on page 17, highlights the fall season along with the listing of titles earned through the years. On page 14 – 15 meet Coach Scott, Head Coach for the Baseball program, as well as learn about future plans for the baseball stadium. Check out what your fellow alumni have been up to, beginning on page 52. If you have news to share, be sure to send it in for the next publication. Plan to join your fellow alumni at the upcoming Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at Marlin’s Brewhouse on December 8th (page 49). If you are interested in picking up some Verot swag with the new Viking, stop in to the school store, The Armory, open every school day from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 – 3:00 p.m. We would be happy to show you around while you are here! I hope you enjoy this edition of the B&G!

FALL 2021
LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Another year at Bishop Verot is well underway, and our students and teachers are excited to be back in class, on the athletic fields and in the theater. Although some of the challenges of Covid-19 still linger, new school years bring all the anticipation of a fresh start. We welcomed our largest freshman class in more than a decade with 220 new Vikings walking the halls of Verot. The Science wing now boasts updated labs, including a new BioMedical lab. We opened The Armory, a school store packed with BV gear for students, parents, and alumni. And we introduced the Verot community to a newly designed mascot,Viktor the Viking, created by our own Stacey Elmeer. After years of sharing the Viking head of the Minnesota Vikings, it was time to have a Viking that was uniquely Verot. After dozens of revisions based on committee feedback, the new logo was complete. We hope you like him as much as we do! This year, we also have a record number of alumni serving the Verot community. Several Vikings continue to bleed black and gold as they have taken on roles on the Bishop Verot School Board as well as the committees supporting the board. We are grateful for the insight they offer as we continue to strive to fulfill our mission. I hope to see you on campus this year at any of our athletic events, performing arts performances, Alumni Association events, or the Gala. Blessings,
Mrs. Suzie O'Grady

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Fellow Alumni, There are many exciting things happening and several ways for you to support our school as we begin this new school year. There have been new classrooms, programs, and clubs added, all in support of our our mission: Bishop Verot Catholic High School builds relationships centered on faith, learning and leadership devoted to educating the whole person, utilizing innovative technologies, empowering students through collaborative experiences and cultivating a spirit of service while grounded in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Students have embraced the new opportunities offered this year. The redesigned lab spaces are home to the new Robotics program along with the Bio-Med program. After much anticipation, Wrestling joins the Rowing Crew team as the latest additions to the Athletic Department. While we celebrate all that is new, we also recognize with admiration our history. Recently, we celebrated Coach Gill’s 50th Alumni Homecoming Tailgate in the courtyard where plans were unveiled for the Coach Gill Plaza, commemorating this milestone. Among the alumni present were Coach Gill’s family, friends, and former colleagues and students. The new Coach Gill Plaza will be at the entrance to Viking Stadium, south of the ticket booth, featuring a grand entrance with new landscaping and lighting. The Plaza will serve as a meeting place before and after competitions for alumni to gather and share memories of Verot. The Coach Gill Plaza will be our tribute to him in admiration and appreciation for the many lives he has touched in his 50 years at Bishop Verot. Construction will begin once the funds for the project have been secured. Please consider a gift toward this project. Any assistance you may offer will be greatly appreciated. Making a donation is easy. Please complete and return the enclosed envelope in the middle of this magazine. Feel free to make a note on the donation portion of the envelope to direct your funds to a specific project or area of our school. Thank you for your continued support. Non Excidet,
Jeff Brown

hroughout Verot’s history, the Viking mascot has had many faces. There have been sharp, boxy Viking heads, hand drawn Vikings adorned in full-body armor, forward facing Vikings, and profile pictures. Most recently, the most prevalent Viking was often mistaken as the Minnesota Viking, making it time to create a fresh, new, official Bishop Verot Viking to use consistently going forward. After looking over past versions, it was decided the new Viktor needed to be fierce-looking, while proudly showing our faith and school spirit. Mrs. Stacey Elmeer, longtime Verot teacher and artist, went to work. After a few revisions, her creation has hit the mark! Viktor the Viking now shows off his whole face, with piercing eyes, a scowl indicative of his Non Excidet spirit, his crown proudly engraved with the BV emblem and, most importantly, a cross to symbolize his unwavering faith. aseball is all about timing. The speed of the pitch, the swing of the bat, even the pop of a first base glove right before the runner hits the bag has a rhythm of its own. Baseball has been a timehonored tradition at Bishop Verot. It’s more than a sport, much like baseball guys aren’t just about baseball. They are a brotherhood bonded in clay and sweat. Our players today stand on the shoulders of the Viking legends who have come before them. We have a long-storied baseball history. Men who played the game in black and gold still tell the tales of their Viking baseball days and the friendships they made here have stood the test of time. Our baseball program is on the verge of once again becoming the area’s
14 B&G
powerhouse under the leadership of third year head coach, Casey Scott. His pedigree and experience, along with his rigorous off -season training have turned heads in our community and have quickly made him the coach baseball players want to play for. He is the right coach, the right man, for these times. Coach Scott came to Verot following head coaching stints at SUNY Cortland and Ave Maria. He serves as a member of the USA Baseball Taskforce, scouting for 15U and 17U national teams. In addition, he served on the 2019, 2021 15U Baseball Trials Staff and was selected to train the 15U National USA Baseball Team. His baseball acumen and skills knowledge also garnered Coach Scott coaching clinicians for camps at Clemson University, USF, the United States Naval Academy, Mississippi State, Boston College and the University of Florida, to name a few. We have our guy. Now we need to upgrade the facilities. Plans are underway and renderings are complete. We have several current and former Verot parents, coaches and community members who have already answered the call to financially support this effort. It’s not a small feat – it’s big and it’s worthy of being named “Viking Baseball Stadium”. We will work in stages to ultimately build the best high school stadium in Southwest Florida.
FALL 2021
This effort will include: •
Turf playing surface
•
New covered batting cages
•
Upgraded fencing
•
New backstop and backstop netting
Here’s how you can help: •
Make a tax-deductible donation
•
Commit to match donations/find a donor match
•
Pledge a substantial donation and pay over time
The time is now fellow Vikings. We have stood the test of time. Let’s build a facility that truly represents our program, our players and our legacy. Let’s do it for the future of Viking Baseball. BV
