WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE The start of a new school year is always an exciting time! We welcome a new class of freshmen and celebrate our returning Vikings as they settle in as sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Of course, the start of this school year looked quite different. One thing to remain the same is the Viking spirit. Students and staff were genuinely happy to return to campus after the abrupt end to last school year.

As you look through this issue of the B&G, you will see all the ways we have tried to return some normalcy to an anything but normal year. Our fall athletic season is now complete, having played a full season in every sport with several teams making it to the highest level of competition. The Fall Athletic Guide starts on page 18 highlighting all of the teams, coaches, and senior athletes. On page 12, read about all the things happening on campus as we navigate these uncharted waters. Clubs are back to meeting again, as evidenced on page 10, with Catholics in Actions working on a service project for the community. Performing Arts have also resumed with Verot theater performing before a live audience (page 16) and the Marching Band taking the field at half-time during football season.

Not only did we welcome new students, but are happy to welcome new staff to the Verot family as well. Read about our newest members on page 14.

Verot alumni are also making a difference this school year. The Alumni Association presented teachers and staff with notes of appreciation collected from fellow alumni, parents, and friends this past month. On the cover of this edition you may recognize some fellow alumni from the law profession. This fall, the first gathering of the newly formed Viking Legal Society was held and they are looking forward to a larger attendance in January (page 8). Please also catch up with fellow alumni in the Alumni News section on page 54 and remember to send in your submissions for future issues. And finally, beginning on page 56, check out the latest news from the Bishop Verot Alumni Association along with an invitation to the 3rd Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Like so many around the world, last Spring Covid-19 brought life on campus to screeching halt. What seemed like a good opportunity for some much needed downtime, quickly led to a realization of all we were missing. The halls of Bishop Verot are normally full of life. The fields and stage are a place where students’ talents can shine. And school wide Liturgies are an opportunity to remind the entire Verot family of the love Jesus Christ has for all of us as we are able to come together and pray. Sadly, for the Class of 2020, all these wonderful and vibrant aspects of daily life were gone in a snap. Despite these challenges, in true Viking fashion, we came together and made the most of the circumstances at hand. Our faculty stepped up to the plate and taught their classes virtually. Our Catholics in Action club and Community Leaders, under the guidance of Father Casey, led virtual prayer services during Lent. The administration, faculty, and staff came together to send messages of hope and love to our Seniors through video messages, home deliveries, a parade, and an outdoor Graduation Ceremony to celebrate their many accomplishments. While none of these events were what we are accustomed to, they demonstrated the unwavering Viking Spirit even in a time of a global pandemic.

What we, as a school community, learned from the experiences during the Spring of 2020 was how much we need to value the day-to-day experiences we have on campus. Over the summer it became clear that one way or another we needed our students back on campus. We missed them. We missed the excitement and vitality they bring to the halls to Bishop Verot day in and day out. So, we worked together tirelessly to figure out a way for the Verot family to return while keeping everyone healthy and safe. Campus is definitely different this year: everyone is required to wear a mask, hallways have directional signs, and students have assigned seats at lunch. What hasn’t changed, however, is the love of the Verot family. We have looked for as many opportunities for normalcy as possible. Our athletic programs have been running smoothly, and our Senior athletes and their families have been able to enjoy the traditions of Senior night so many missed out on during the Spring. Our theater program just completed their fall production, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, with an in-person audience. And every day, without fail, our teachers continue to engage their students in meaningful discussions and serve as incredible mentors in the lives of those they teach. Yes, many aspects of school life are different. However, in a very reassuring way, most things are still the same. The mission of Bishop Verot Catholic High School continues daily in faith, love, and community. And for this we are most grateful.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT As alumni of Bishop Verot we have all experienced firsthand the caring nature of our teachers. From the first classes in 1962 to present, each of Verot’s teachers has one goal in mind, the success of the students. Whether we were taught by the Sisters of Allegheny, Oblates of St. Francis, or by a lay teacher - we were instilled with a quality Catholic education and are part of a long history of alumni.

I am proud to say I have begun my third school year at Verot. I never thought I would be working with my old football coach and woodshop teacher, Coach Gill, or as us old guys call him, CG. One of the many strengths of our school is the tenure of our staff and number of alumni who chose to teach at Verot. This is a testament to our work environment and commitment to Catholic education.

It is refreshing to see how the teachers care so much for the success of our students and how the students positively respond to our teachers. Although there have been many challenges due to Covid, I have witnessed how our faculty and staff are overcoming the challenges and putting our students first. Our teachers and staff have created a safe and happy place for our students. It may be difficult to learn a student’s name while they are wearing a mask but it is never difficult to recognize the smile behind the mask in their eyes.

From a technical point, thanks to our 1:1 iPad program and infrastructure, we were steps ahead in offering distant learning for those who chose to remain at home. Our teachers still provide the high level of education expected from our school. We began the second quarter with 95% of our students in the classroom, we are pleased to welcome a growing number of students back to campus. Each day begins with a temperature check and masks are worn when on campus, offering confidence in the safety of on campus learning.

I would imagine many books will be written about the events of this year. It would be interesting to be a history teacher in the future teaching about the year 2020. As we will look back, one thing I am sure we all agree with is our teachers and staff created long-lasting friendships and memories with our students despite the challenges. We will forever be a part of the Verot Family.

THE VIKING LEGAL SOCIETY Promoting professionalism and integrity while supporting Bishop Verot Catholic High School

ears ago, two attorneys on opposing sides found common ground in a negotiation, resulting in a plea agreement. During conversation they discovered they had a history, having both graduated from Bishop Verot High School. This meeting was the beginning of a renewed friendship resulting in professional referrals through the years.

It was from this meeting Carlos Cavenago III ’96 had the idea of creating the Viking Legal Society. The group would offer the opportunity for fellow legal professionals to gather and network while sharing their common interests including a passion for their high school alma mater.

On October 15, 2020 the first gathering of Verot alumni legal professionals was held. Over 20 alumni representing classes from 1976 to 2011 returned to the Verot campus in the Media Center to interact away from the demands of clients, court and antagonistic positions. And while Carlos was pleased with the response from the legal community, he is certain membership will grow based on the positive feedback he has had so far. From a professional standpoint, the connections made can be invaluable to their daily work. As Verot alumni, their reputations for dealing honestly and fairly begins from the strong moral foundation laid in high school.

The mission for the future of the Viking Legal Society is not only to network with fellow professionals but also to give back to their alma mater. Promoting alumni involvement through support of the annual Gala, participation in Alumni Association events, and presenting to current students at events like the annual Career Day are some examples. The next meeting is scheduled for January 28, 2021 back on the Verot campus. Please be sure to follow the Viking Legal Society facebook page for future events and invitations. BV

he Catholics in Action Club welcomes students who want to strengthen their faith and make a difference within our school and community. Under the leadership of Mr. Mark Latell ’83, Director of Student Life, students participate in a number of events throughout the school year, such as: •

Navigating Uncharted Waters Will we? Won’t we?

In the midst of a global pandemic, those were the questions; would we be able to open the Bishop Verot campus and open safely?

By July, we had already pulled off an impressive graduation ceremony for our 2020 graduates but holding in person classes would present more difficult challenges. The summer was dragging and the toll of the pandemic was felt on campus. Teachers and administrators wanted our students back, but it was going to be a Herculean effort during a time when seemingly everything was being cancelled.

As the statistics seemed to improve and our state leadership called for the opening of schools, we were hopeful. With that hope also came some setbacks. Out of an abundance of precaution, the first day of school was pushed back a week. It was a disappointment in a time of uncertainty, but in true Viking spirit, we would not fail. Teachers used the time to ready their zoom classes for distance learners while the administration measured and taped and rearranged classrooms allowing for classes to resume in compliance with social distance recommendations.

The push to immediately dismiss them from campus at the end of the school day lightened as the slow introduction of after school and extra activities began. The Computer Lab filled with seniors ready to start working on college applications and teachers were once again able to offer the extra support to their students outside of class time. Clubs began recruiting new members and started their meetings again. The fall sports season and athletes were celebrated with an outdoor Pep Rally. And the cast of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon took to the stage to rehearse for their November showing in front of a socially distanced live audience.

It is not easy to make the first move, to be bold when others have understandable reservations. But we are leaders and our trust is in the Lord. Meetings were held, preparations were completed and on August 17th, we opened our school.

Parents from out of state took notice and our enrollment swelled with students moving in from California, New York, Ohio and Massachusetts to come to Bishop Verot; to have the chance of relative normalcy.

School, however, was definitely different. Students and staff were subject to daily temperature checks and everyone was masked up. Lunchtime seating charts were logged to efficiently contact trace should we have any positive tests.

We were in unchartered waters, but that’s what Vikings do – navigate unchartered waters.

As the weeks went by students were anxious to see the return of teacher office hours, club meetings, and extracurricular activities. Their compliance in following the

After the successful completion of the first quarter, Student Life kicked off the much anticipated House System by introducing this year’s student leadership team and implementing a new bell schedule to include daily House meetings. Students are enjoying this addition to their day, connecting with their house members and staff mentor.

Our students have missed out on a lot but are making the best of what they have. Our senior class expressed their emotions creatively during the Halloween dress out day, when the entire class dressed as “inmates.” Their orange shirts emblazoned with Inmate #2021 was meant to make light of the many COVID restrictions placed on their social lives these past six months, a sentiment shared by most of us!

Bishop Verot has had a few expected bumps in the road to global recovery but in partnership with our families, we’ve adapted and adjusted. Our classes have continued, our athletics have continued and we interact with a new purpose,

an effort to combat the isolation that has come along with COVID-19. We give thanks to God we remain healthy and together as Bishop Verot Vikings. Non Excidet! BV

e m o c l e W John Hobbs John joins our faculty to teach Economics and Financial Literacy and to lead the girls basketball program.

John is a native Floridian, who recently retired from the luxury automotive industry after working for Porsche Cars North America, Audi of America, and Mercedes-Benz USA. He earned his master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida, and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Rollins College in Winter Park. He is excited to share his experiences and create memorable financial life lessons with our students.

John, and his wife Caroline, have three daughters, Hannah 25, Meredith 22, and Catherine 18. John and Caroline will be moving into their new home in Fort Myers in late November.

Joseph Ilnitzki Joseph Ilnitzki, a recent transplant from Long Island, NY is a veteran teacher of 30 years, both as an English teacher and a Computer Science Department chair. He received his master’s degree in Computer Integration into the Curriculum from Columbia University.

He particularly enjoys working on the writing process, helping students to understand writing is an art form with many creative elements, no matter what

the topic or assignment. He has been involved in a variety of extracurricular activities including journalism, live streaming, coaching softball, basketball, and golf. In his free time he enjoys running, biking, reading, and being an uncle to his 6 brothers’ nieces and nephews.

Christina Lavender Christina joins our faculty with 14 years of experience in education. She was born and raised in Fort Myers. She attended North Carolina State University and earned her degree from Florida Gulf Coast University. She also has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She spent 11 years teaching for the Lee County School District and 3 years at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School. She is excited to join the Bishop Verot family and help students grow spiritually, academically, and socially.

She has two children, Levi (12) and Savannah (10). They enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors. They live in Fort Myers and are members of St. John XXIII parish.

Brad Negulescu Brad joins Bishop Verot after teaching history at the high school and college levels for the past 10 years. He is a

graduate of Cleveland State University with a degree in political science and international relations. He then earned a master’s degree from John Carroll University in history. Brad just recently relocated to Florida from Cleveland, Ohio, where he was born and raised.

He now resides in Fort Myers with his wife, Juliana, and their two kittens, Zia and Zora.

Danielle Pendleton Mrs. Pendleton is a Florida native, wife, and mother of 2 boys. She

attended The Florida State University and earned a B.S. in Marketing and Finance.

She also earned her M.Ed in Instructional Leadership and Mathematics from American College of Education. When she isn’t teaching, Danielle loves to coach various athletic teams as well as spend time watching her boys play baseball and basketball. She has been teaching for over a decade and has taught students from grades 3-10. Danielle is excited to join the faculty of Bishop Verot and can’t wait to share her love of mathematics with her students.

Jim Whealan Jim has joined the Bishop Verot family to teach Theology after retiring to the Ft. Myers area from Illinois. Jim spent two decades in the software technology sector as a consultant and senior director. As an active member of Old Saint Patrick’s Church in Chicago, he discovered his passion for faith, teaching, and theology inspiring him to pursue his MA in Justice Ministry from Catholic Theology Union.

His goal of pursuing a career as a Catholic theology teacher has come to fruition and he is beyond joyful for the opportunity to work with the gifted faculty and students in a Catholic community dedicated to living out the Verot mission of faith, learning, and leadership. The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon T

he Bishop Verot Theater fall performance of The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon drew quite a crowd! For many of the cast members, this was especially gratifying after having worked so hard on last spring’s Beauty and The Beast. The spring musical had been weeks away from their performance

when the shutdown began. Not to be discouraged, the cast continued to rehearse via Zoom in hopes of an eventual live performance. Once it became clear this was not going to happen, they improvised by performing in small groups, scene by scene, to put together a video performance to share with family and friends.

The cast of this fall’s show had worked tirelessly on lines and choreography, after virtual auditions the first couple weeks of school. In November, the curtain opened to a live audience. The surprise came with the number of alumni who came out to support the performing arts department! BV

Coach Mohring is in his first year as the Head Coach after having served as the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the past three seasons. Coach Mohring, who has coached at Valdosta State College, Arkansas State College, and Tusculum College returned to Bishop Verot, his alma mater, in 2017. He played professionally as a free agent for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills following the conclusion of his collegiate career at Georgia Southern. Coach Fleitas, also Assistant Principal for Student Affairs, is in his fourth season as Head Coach of the Girls and Boys Cross Country teams.

Jorge holds a Bachelor Degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Masters in Psychology from Carlos Albizi University.

In addition to his teaching and administrative experience, Jorge has a proven track record as a cross country and track coach. Under Coach Fleitas’ leadership, the Dr. Phillips High School Head Coach track and field team earned a 4A Team State Title Jorge Fleitas in 2015 and the Columbus Catholic High School cross country team earned state titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Jorge, and his wife Angela, a teacher at St. Francis Xavier, have two young children, Jorge Jr. and Nico.

Jason enters his sixth year as Head Coach of the Swimming and Diving Program and is in his fifth year as Verot’s Athletic Director. Coach Baumgardner has won the Girls District Title and has placed second in the region each year.

On the boys side he has one District Championship and has had multiple Head Coach district and region individual champions Jason Baumgardner along with four individual state champion titles. Jason, and his wife Jennifer, have four daughters, Sandra ’17, Erika ’18, Deisy ’20, and Laura ’21.

Andy Scott is entering his eighth year coaching the Boys Golf Team. He originally hails from Kentucky and has trained with world renowned golf teachers such as Hank Haney, Bob Toski, Jim McLean, Phil Ritson, and Mac O’Grady. He has been amongst his peers and students alike as one of the top golf instructors in South Florida. His positive, simplistic Head Coach approach to golf lessons has helped many Andy Scott players improve their games. Andy has a strong junior golf program which has produced 23 juniors to NCAA Collegiate Golf Scholarships.

Jeff enters his fifth year as the Girls Golf Coach.

Jeff is a graduate of Cape Coral High School and is a Class A member with the PGA of America.

He has won multiple awards including the 2006 Teacher of the Year and the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Presidents Award for growth of the game.

Nixon was also named the 2012, 2013, and 2014 PGA Player Development Award recipient for the South Florida PGA. Jeff has coached over a thousand Head Coach students ranging from scratch players, beginners, Jeff Nixon juniors and the disabled. Jeff’s unique ability is to be able to adapt to each student has served him well in the 10,000 plus lessons that he has given over the past twenty years. Jeff enjoys sharing his past experience with the Verot Golf program.

Coach David Zukin is in his fourth year as Head Coach of the Bowling team. Coach Zukin has been bowling since he was seven years old and a bowling league participant for 35 years. He has bowled two perfect games. Coach Zukin is in his 26th year in education, teaching Algebra 2 Honors and Statistics Honors. He and his wife Chris have a daughter, Laurel.

Band Director Linda Burke MARCHING BAND

Linda Burke is in her third year as the Viking Band Director. She comes with more than 20 years of both classical and symphonic musical experience and education. She earned her Bachelor degree in Music, majoring in clarinet, from St. Mary’s College in 2008 and received her Master degree in teaching three years later. She is very excited for the opportunity to grow the marching band and go on local and state competitions with field shows in the next few years.

ALUMNI NEWS Cian Cranfield ’17 Cian is honored to be accepted into the Florida State University College of Medicine, Class of 2025. A current senior at FSU, Cian will graduate in the spring and is excited to be part of a medical program whose mission is to provide care to Florida’s elderly, rural, minority, and underserved populations.

Luke Labreche ’13 Luke and Jenise Labreche professed their love in front of family and friends July 12, 2020 at Rose Hall Event Center in Dallas, Georgia. Luke is a Firefighter/Advanced EMS and works for the City of Atlanta Fire Department. Jenise will be teaching kindergarten At Ethos Classical Charter School in Atlanta, Georgia. The couple resides in Covington, Georgia.

Mariel Rickert ’11 Dr. Mariel M. Rickert earned the Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Central Florida Medical School in May 2019. Dr. Rickert also received her Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of Florida in 2015 and was admitted into the highly selective Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society in 2018. She has presented her research at the State, National, and International levels and is published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Dr. Rickert is currently involved in a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Edward Fair ’10 Eddie and Candice Bryden were married on July 17, 2020 in Austin, Texas. Sam Biel ’10 was the ceremony officiant. Eddie is employed by Domio and Candice is an Audit Supervisor for the National Sanitation Foundation. They have recently relocated to Miami, Florida.

Julia Comer ’07 Dr. Comer has accepted and will begin a Fellowship in Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Florida State University College of Medicine in 2016 and was most recently at the University of Florida in the Department of Otolaryngology.

STAYING CONNECTED...

Greetings, Last month, the newly established Viking Legal Society held its first Meet & Greet. The gathering was held on campus in the Media Center, and they had close to 20 alumni in attendance. We are excited about what the future holds for this group of alumni lawyers and judges who share common interests, practices, and passion for Verot.

In today’s environment, teachers are juggling virtual and classroom learning, while all staff members are focused on keeping students safe and in good spirits. They are navigating uncharted waters and working harder than ever before. To ensure their hard work is fully recognized and appreciated, we have been busy gathering thank you notes for teachers and staff. Alumni, parents, and friends of Verot submitted over 200 messages which we packaged up and delivered to the school this month.

Finally, we are excited to announce that we’ll be hosting our 3rd Annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party on Thursday, December 10, at Marlin’s Brewhouse. Mark your calendar and follow us on Facebook for more information.

SCHOOL NOTES National Merit Scholarship Program Two students in the Class of 2021 were recently acknowledged for their academic acheivements.

Xavier Caangay was named a semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. Xavier is one of only 16,000 students nationwide to be recognized among the 1.5 million juniors who entered the competition by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

He is also a member of the Boys Cross Country team. Jack Rowe was presented with a Letter of Commendation in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. Jack also served as the Drum Major for the Marching Band.

Thespian Troupe Competition This year, the Educational Theater Association made all Thespian Regional Festivals virtual, and Verot’s Troupe 6159 was ready to adapt! The troupe had 17 submissions for individual events, which varied from Monologues to Small Group Musical to even Pantomime. Our students performed selections from a number of different shows, including Newsies, Beetlejuice: the Musical, My William Shatner Man Crush, and Dear Evan Hansen, to name a few. They are excited to see the outcome of the performances and are hopeful to can send some of our students to the virtual State Festival this spring!

BioMedical Science Program Students in Human Body Systems class have each received their personal Maniken.

As part of this curriculum, students will learn directional and regional anatomical terms by labeling their Manikens. They have started to give them an identity by adding the temporalis muscle, adipose tissue, decided on eye color, and applied the Orbicularis Oculi onto the inner eyelids. Follow their progress on Facebook as we continue to share this project throughout the school year.

SCHOOL NOTES Senior Conor Cranfield Commits to the United States Naval Academy Conor Cranfield gave his verbal commitment to the US Naval Academy this fall to continue his athletic swimming career. In additional to this great accomplishment, Conor also recently competed in the Florida State Championship Swim Meet. Conor successfully defended his State Champion title taking first for the second consecutive year in the 500 Freestyle. He was joined by teammates Robert Flannery, Marcos EgriMartin, and Ryan Staunch for the 200 medley relay, setting a school record with their 1:36.83 third place finish.

Theology Project In honor of Faith and Blue Weekend, Bishop Verot students joined other schools in the Diocese creating thank you cards for our local law enforcement. Faith and Blue Weekend is a public-private partnership to show law enforcement officers appreciation from Faith Communities nationwide, and an effort to build a united community for all.
