WE ARE VEROT...A LOOK INSIDE After a very busy summer, we are excited to welcome another class of freshmen to the family. The Freshman Retreat included the traditional community service projects, candlelight prayer service, and the overnight stay on campus. Alumnus Caitlin (Crane) Zick ’03, a member of the first Freshman Retreat leadership team, shared her high school story of challenges, faith, and transformation with retreatants (page 51). The faculty and staff of Verot returned from summer break, along with St. Andrew and St. Francis, and spent their first day of the new school year together. It has become a great way to reunite with our partner schools and welcome new staff. Read about this unifying tradition on page 9 and our new faculty on page 16. In September, Bishop Dewane welcomed our Vikings back, visiting the school and celebrating Mass. He brought with him rosaries which he blessed during the Mass and distributed to all the students. Just as we welcome a new class of students every year, our campus is continually changing and improving. On page 12, read about all the improvements made this summer. We welcomed alumni back to campus at the Annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate and Football game (pictures on page 48). If you missed it, consider spending an evening in the Anderson Theater for the fall musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, directed by fellow
alum Lisa Stevens ’07 (more information on page 14). For those active alumni, register to run (or walk) the 2nd Annual All Area Catholic Schools 5K Fun Run, to be held on January 26, 2019 (www.bvhs.org/5K-fun-run). On page 8, read about the progress the Bishop Verot Alumni Association has made in its first year. As Monica and Skyler keep the momentum going with a full schedule of events, help them by following the Facebook page, sharing information with your fellow alumni, and attending the events.
As always, I hope you enjoy reading this issue. The B&G Alumni Magazine is meant to keep our Verot family connected, sharing what is happening at your alma mater now and the exciting things your fellow alumni are doing. Your input is always welcome as well as alumni news and updates (email to patty.holmes@ bvhs.org). Enjoy this edition of the B&G!

My letter to you last fall was uncharacteristically somber as I shared the tremendous challenge we faced repairing the damage the campus had sustained from Hurricane Irma. A year later I am pleased to share we have overcome these challenges with the help of our Verot family.
Bishop Verot’s motto of Non Excidet, we will not fail, is a spirit living on long after our graduates receive their diploma. Alumni, former parents, past supporters, and current parents all came together playing a part in our recovery. As you will see in this issue, we have been hard at work, repairing and making improvements to the campus. It has been very humbling to see Vikings come to the rescue, working on the campus where they themselves had spent their high school years. The connection our alumni and families have to Bishop Verot is long lasting, a true Viking family. One Viking in particular has chosen to focus his experience and passion for Bishop Verot High School to make a difference in our future.
It gives me great pleasure to announce alumnus Jeff Brown, Class of 1980, has taken up permanent residence at Verot as our Director of Development. I have had the pleasure of working with Jeff for the past four years as a member of the Marketing Committee and School Board. Jeff has been a great supporter of Verot, rallying alumni attendance at Viking events and sharing the future vision of Bishop Verot. His passion for the Verot family has always been evident. Please join me in welcoming him home. As always, I am very grateful for the support of the Verot family. His Blessings, Denny Denison

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LETTER FROM THE DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR My Fellow Vikings,
It often takes time to realize the events leading us to new opportunities. In 2011, while my son Stephen was a student at Bishop Verot, I was participating in the Greater Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class. On Education Day we chose a school to visit and having graduated from Bishop Verot myself, the choice was obvious. I spent the day with Randy Zavada and Dan Jackman and attended my first Marketing Committee meeting. I also observed, and completely enjoyed, Anthony Pierce’s English class. From that day forward I made a personal commitment to give back to my school. I still continue to serve as a member of the Marketing Committee. I was a member of the Catholic Life and Student Identity Committee and served as a School Board member beginning in 2015. I also invited my fellow alumni to join me at Bishop Verot events, encouraging their involvement as well.
When considering the position of Director of Development, I quickly determined my skill set and dedication for the school were ideally suited. I am honored to be able to work with such a talented faculty and staff at my alma mater.
I look forward to continuing the success of my predecessor, Gina Lombardo, with my dedication and commitment to the school. I am also excited to connect with present and future alumni. Sincerely,
Jeff Brown Jeff Brown ’80

or the third year, the faculty and staff of St. Andrew Catholic School, St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, and Bishop Verot Catholic High School have joined together on their first day back for a day of collaboration, competition, and celebration. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Anthony Hewitt (St. Francis), with Fr. Gordon Zanetti (St. Andrew), Fr. Casey Jones (Bishop Verot), and Monsignor McNamara (Church of the Resurrection) followed by lunch and a friendly quiz bowl competition with St. Andrew faculty enjoying the victory. Fr. Casey’s presentation inspired teachers to be victors as they tackle a new school year, educating a new class of students. This annual tradition has proven to be a great way to inspire teachers and begin the year as unified Catholic educators, making a difference in hundreds of students and their families throughout Lee County. or many Verot alumni, the Mission Club was an important part of their high school years. Focused on sharing their Catholic faith and helping others, the Mission Club made quite a difference in both the participant’s lives and the lives of those they reached out to help.
A few years ago, the Mission Club became Catholics in Action, under the leadership of Mr. Latell, math and engineering teacher and Verot alumnus. With over 50 members, Catholics in Action, or CIA as it is known around campus, continues to make a difference. The club meets once a week, holds monthly Faith Fridays (Christian movie night), participates in a number of Diocesan events including 40 Days for Life Youth Day, Diocesan Youth Rally, and the Prayer Walk with Bishop Dewane. Students will also be traveling to Washington D.C. in January for the National March for Life and volunteer their time at local parishes. In September, a small group traveled to Orlando to participate in Universal Studio’s Rock the Universe Christian Music Festival, the largest celebration of Christian music in the state.

Someone once said, “If you are not moving forward, you are moving backwards.”
Summer is a time of rest and relaxation for our teachers and students, a time to recharge and prepare for the new school year. It is also the time when our maintenance department kicks into high gear, taking full advantage of the opportunities an empty campus offers, and this year was no exception.
New pavers line the halls of the Main Building and all outdoor walkways. The cafeteria courtyard has been updated and reconfigured giving students a more comfortable area to spend their Flex time. The old concrete planters have been replaced with new landscaping, grassy areas, and numerous benches and tables. Additional quote plaques have been added to campus inspiring students as they make their way across campus throughout the day. Television screens now scroll announcements and the daily bell schedule. Campus security has been an important goal for this summer’s projects and included installing glass doors, additional security cameras, an updated PA system, and electronic door locks. Faculty and students now carry an ID doubling as key card for entry to campus and classrooms. Thank you to Sanibel Captiva Community Bank for sponsoring the new cards. Improvements were also made outside the gates as the parking lots were torn out, asphalted, and striped. Viking Stadium’s turf was replaced and a new rubber track installed making Verot eligible to host Track & Field meets. This year, plan to cheer on the Vikings at any of the many athletic or performing arts events and see how Bishop Verot continues to move forward. BV

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
FR. CASEY’S CORNER In his letter to the Philippians, St. Paul exhorts the Christians of his day to “Shine as lights in the world” so as to give witness to God’s glory in the midst of what he renders as a “a crooked and perverse generation”. In other words, the Sacred Scriptures call us to shine bright with the light of Christ in a world often plagued with darkness. It is our hope young people do not leave Bishop Verot as simply well-educated, but also well-formed disciples to bring a message of peace, joy, and salvation to a world full of distress and condemnation. I must confess, every day, I am blessed to see evidence of this formation in the lives of our students. I often say to myself I should keep a daily log of the way Christ makes himself known to me in the lives of our students. I am sure I could fill a book by now. However, a couple of recent examples come to mind I would like to share.
One of the most anticipated—if not the most anticipated event at the beginning of the academic year is the freshman retreat, an experience introduced to Verot over 15 years ago. This year, while other schools post signs reading “Go home, freshmen!” and the like, our freshmen had an experience which allowed them to be welcomed with open arms into the Verot family by Senior Vikings. This event is almost entirely student-led and has become a valued Verot tradition. I am always edified by our seniors’ enthusiasm in welcoming our new students and sharing the ups and downs of their own high school journey, offering advice and above all, prayer and support. This year I was blown away by the spiritual leadership of our seniors who modeled not only how to have fun and play games, but how to pray as well. A retreat highlight is the candlelight service in the Senior Courtyard, which for the past three years has also included Eucharistic Adoration. Seeing our seniors and freshmen, willingly fall to their knees in front of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is a beautiful thing to behold, and the spirit of prayer as they placed their arms around each other in song was strongly felt by all present. I know I was blessed, and still hear our freshmen talking about how amazing an experience it was for them.
the second half, the quarterback of this team injured his leg. After the normal, post-game hand-slaps, our players, noticing the young man standing on the sidelines on crutches, walked over to surround him with words of encouragement and say a prayer over him. These young men did so without prompting from the coaches, the chaplain, or anyone else. They made this choice because they know this is simply who we are. Such a powerful witness! I am blessed by our students everyday who inspire me in my own walk with Jesus Christ, Our Lord. It is my continued hope Verot continues to produce students and graduates who know how to be the shining lights Jesus calls us to be! BV
I would like to share another example of how I have seen Christ already at work in our students this year. Our first home football game this year was against Lakeland Christian School (who are also called the Vikings). In

SCHOOL NOTES National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists Ü Claire Sattler and Sam Bejarano, both seniors, were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program this fall. They are two of only 16,000 students nationwide, less than one percent of seniors, to be recognized among the 1.6 million juniors who entered the competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Claire and Sam have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million to be offered next spring, after fulfilling several requirements to advance to Finalist standing. Both Claire and Sam are active members of the STREAM Team, Academic Team, and National Honor Society.
Freshman Retreat Ü For over 15 years, freshmen have been welcomed to the family during this very special retreat. With senior leaders mentoring them, students spend an afternoon in the community volunteering their service. Students worked on landscaping projects, cleaned barns, painted, and sorted food at places like Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Special Equestrians, and ECHO. Once back on campus, students shared in small groups and ice breaker games and participated in the candlelight prayer service. Alumnus Caitlin (Crane) Zick ’03 was a special guest speaker, talking about her struggles during high school and how she was able to overcome them.
ÛGolisano Children’s Hospital Project Students in Mrs. Kennedy’s sophomore Theology class created beautiful “Days of Creation” decorations to be delivered to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Each student was responsible for writing a heartfelt message to a child as part of the project. Students put a lot of time and care into creating something to bring a little sunshine to kids who need it most.
