MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in Catholic tradition, Bishop Verot educates the minds and hearts of all students in an innovative and community-centered learning environment, preparing them for lives of faithful service to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Recognized by Apple

Viking Creed G

As members of the Verot family, we will always support our fellow Vikings, defend our traditions, honor our legacy, and Bleed black and gold. We are Verot!

Fr. Hugh, with his arms outstretched on the cover, perfectly exemplifies who he was to the Verot family through the years. He was always welcoming, always willing to step in when needed, someone you knew you could count on. When called upon, he never said no – he just found a way. On page 10, Suzie O’Grady shares more about Fr. Hugh and the great impact he has had on so many.

Alumni engagement is so important to our success, and there are many ways to re-engage with the Verot family. Consider presenting at the upcoming Career Day, sharing your experiences with current students as they try to identify areas of interest for their future (page 9). Gather some friends and join this year’s annual Gala & Auction, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point. Promote your business with fellow Verot families by sponsoring the event or donating items to the auction (pages 16-17). And beginning on page 7, take a look at the number of ways you can offer your financial support.

As always, there is a lot happening on campus. On page 12, read about the Community/House System and what they have been up to. Check out all the winter athletics in the Winter Athletics Guide, beginning on page 18. This edition’s focus on the arts is highlighting the Band program, which now includes a Worship Band, on page 45.

As we enter the enrollment season, if you or anyone you know is considering Verot for their high schooler, be sure to send them my way! There is limited space available in the 10th and 11th grades and transfer applications are currently being accepted.

Enjoy this edition!

Missio n Statement G

Rooted in Catholic tradition, Bishop Verot educates the minds and hearts of all students in an innovative and community-centered learning environment, preparing them for lives of faithful service to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Gratitude fills my heart as I reflect on the loving and faith-filled community that defines Bishop Verot Catholic High School. Our alumni continue to inspire us by living out the values they embraced during their time here. This issue of the Black and Gold magazine highlights two remarkable examples: Maddie Hardness and Tyler Vasco, who exemplify faith in action through their work as missionaries. Their commitment to spreading the Gospel and serving others reflects the mission of Bishop Verot.

This message is also a heartfelt one as we remember and celebrate the life of Fr. Hugh, a man whose impact on our school community spans decades. Fr. Hugh was more than a Principal and Pastor; he was a humble servant who embodied the teachings of St. Francis de Sales, consistently living with gentleness, humility, and love of others. His willingness to say “yes” whenever Bishop Verot called on him is a testament to his unwavering commitment to our school.

On a personal note, Fr. Hugh’s influence reaches deeply into my own life. He was not only a mentor but also a cherished friend to my family. Under his guidance, I found a home in the Catholic Church, a journey that has shaped me in countless ways. Fr. Hugh baptized my three children and witnessed my marriage to my husband nearly 25 years ago. These milestones are a reflection of his enduring presence in our lives, and I know many of you reading this have your own stories of how he touched your lives as well.

As we honor Fr. Hugh’s memory, let us also celebrate his legacy—one of faith, humility, and service. May we be inspired by his example to live lives rooted in Christ and dedicated to the service of others.

Thank you for being part of the Bishop Verot family and for continuing to carry the light of faith into the world. May God bless you and your loved ones.

Blessings,

Mrs. Suzie O'Grady

Letter from the Director of Advancement

“We will not fail.”
– St. Francis de Sales –

These words from our patron saint are a reminder that we are called to live and love like God. We, too, must never quit. Never give up on one another or on ourselves. Above all, we must remember that God will never abandon us and His love never fails.

Happy New Year! As we welcome 2025, we are filled with gratitude for the rich tradition and history that define Catholic education at Bishop Verot High School. For over six decades, our school has stood as a cornerstone of faith formation and academic excellence, shaping generations of students to become compassionate leaders and steadfast witnesses of Christ’s love.

This past year presented challenges, particularly in the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The storms disrupted our routines and tested our community, but it also demonstrated the strength and resilience of the Bishop Verot family. Through the unwavering support of our parents, alumni, and broader community, we not only weathered the storm but emerged stronger and more united in our mission.

As we look ahead, our commitment to providing an exceptional Catholic education remains unwavering. We are dedicated to fostering a safe, enriched, and healthy environment where our students can grow spiritually, physically, and mentally. Rooted in our faith, we are committed to forming young men and women who are prepared to serve others and live out their faith in a dynamic world.

A vital part of continuing this rich tradition is creating and sustaining a strong culture of giving. It is through your generosity that we can provide the resources needed to enrich our academic programs, enhance campus facilities, and ensure a safe and supportive environment for all. Your willingness to invest in the mission of Bishop Verot is a testament to the strength of our community and the value we place on Catholic education.

Your prayers, involvement, and financial support are essential to our shared success. Together, we will ensure that the legacy of Bishop Verot remains vibrant and strong for generations to come.

May God bless you and your family abundantly in this new year. We look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2025. With gratitude and blessings,

WAYS THAT YOU CAN SUPPORT BISHOP VEROT CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

The VIKING Fund

The VIKING Fund is the foundation of the community support for our school, supporting such initiatives as technology enhancements, tuition assistance, and campus improvements.

Endowed Scholarships

The purpose of an endowment is to provide ongoing support for the current and future activities of Bishop Verot Catholic High School and its students. It is, therefore, a perpetual, self-sustaining source of permanent funding. Each year, a portion of the endowment’s earnings are paid out, while the principal is retained for future growth. Bishop Verot currently has 11 endowed scholarship funds valued at over $2.9 million, which provide over $100,000 in scholarships each year. They are:

• Carl Kistel Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2000

• Rob Miller Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2000

• Jacob Alderman Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2003

• John and Mimi Hotchkiss Scholarship Fund - Est. 2004

• Joseph Grabsch Scholarship Fund - Est. 2005

• Dick Stahl Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2008

• Edward and Esther Kuss Memorial Scholarship Fund - Est. 2010

• Spirit of 1974 Scholarship Fund - Est. 2011

• Judy Springston Scholarship for the Arts - Est. 2014

• Diana D’Olica Scholarship Fund - Est. 2017

• Dr. Frederick W. Schaerf Neuroscience Scholarship Fund – Est. 2018

IRA Donation

70 1/2 Years and Older…

You can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Bishop Verot, without having to pay income taxes on that money. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit and you can feel good knowing that you are making a difference at Bishop Verot! This is a popular gift option and is commonly referred to as the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD).

Why Consider This Gift?

• Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference that your donation is making.

• Beginning in the calendar year you turn 73, you can use your gift to satisfy all or part of your required minimum distribution (RMD).

• You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

Since the gift does not count as income, it can reduce your annual income level! This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

59 1/2 Years and Older…

If you’re at least 59 1/2 years old, you can take a distribution and then make a gift from your IRA without penalty. If you itemize your deductions, you can take a charitable deduction for the amount of your gift.

AT ANY AGE

No matter your age, you can designate Bishop Verot as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA, and it will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime. It is simple, just requiring youth contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form. BG

Remembering Father Hugh McGuigan:

A Beloved Oblate and Friend of Bishop Verot

Father Hugh McGuigan, OSFS, passed away on November 24, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and dedication. Ordained on May 31, 1997, Father Hugh embodied the teachings of St. Francis de Sales, serving the Bishop Verot community with kindness, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to Christ. Father Hugh was more than a priest and principal to the Bishop Verot community—he was a friend and a constant source of faith, laughter, and support. As an Oblate of St. Francis de Sales, Father Hugh reflected the principles of his order in his ministry. During his time at Verot as both Brother Hugh (in the early 90’s) and later as Father Hugh he served the school community as Dean of Students and Principal leaving a lasting impact on the many lives he touched.

“Father Hugh was and still is a special soul and spirit to me and many others. I think he is still present here at Bishop Verot. He loved his Vikings,” shared Mike Gill, a close friend and colleague. “Hugh and I shared an office when he first came to Verot. He was not an ordained priest at the time and was known as Brother Hugh. I know of no other who loved to laugh and smile as much as Hugh. After he was ordained, the Bishop asked him to be Principal of Verot. He was not sure if he should take the job, but he prayed on it and told me he needed lots of help to be successful. He took the job and was a terrific principal.”

Father Hugh was known for building relationships and creating a legacy of joy and compassion. He had a unique ability to connect with everyone he met, whether presiding over

the weddings of dozens of Verot alumni, baptizing their children, or simply sharing a laugh in the hallways. His selflessness and commitment to others reflected his deep faith and dedication to Christ.

love in both word and deed. He will never be forgotten.”

Clayton Atkins, an alumnus, recalled with a smile, “The only time I ever saw Fr. Hugh without a smile is when he gave me a detention for making prank phone calls from the payphone in the cafeteria my freshman year. Father Hugh’s memorable blend of strong faith, genuine sincerity, and cutting sarcasm was like a law of nature: you could always count on him in a time of need, and he would be there with a smile and a laugh.”

At his funeral Mass held at Our Lady of Light on December 6, 2024, the focus was on a well-known quote by St. Francis de Sales: “Be who you are and be that well.” Father Hugh not only lived out this message but also encouraged everyone he met to do the same. Another guiding principle of St. Francis de Sales, “Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing so gentle as real strength,” was evident in every aspect of Father Hugh’s ministry and leadership.

Mary Dakin, who worked closely with him, said, “He was the most selfless person I have ever known. He was there for everyone. It is hard to envision our world without him a phone call away. I feel blessed to have known him, worked with him, and shared some of the most important family occasions with him. I will never forget what he did for (my husband) Stephen. Father Hugh exemplified and embodied Christ’s

Father Hugh’s legacy is a collection of cherished memories and life lessons. He truly bled Black and Gold, always stepping in to help whenever Bishop Verot needed him. Though his loss leaves a void, his spirit and influence will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Father Hugh McGuigan, OSFS, will always be remembered for the love, laughter, and faith that define the Bishop Verot community. BG

Bishop Verot’s Community –House System

6 Communities... 1 Family We are

Verot!
“Community is at the heart of all Catholic education, not simply a concept to be taught, but as a reality to be lived.”
– St. John Paul II –

The Community System continues to support the mission of Bishop Verot by not only offering leadership opportunities for students, but also creating a community-centered learning environment. And while our twice-weekly House meetings typically look like organized recess, there is so much social growth and learning happening.

Senior Leaders are further developing their leadership skills as they work with their teacher mentors planning meeting activities and larger, community-wide projects. Leaders in the Community of St. Teresa realized a need for emotional support and spear-headed a school-wide card campaign with members expressing their care and concern to someone they all hold dear. The recent Penny Wars raised over $2,200 for Catholic Charities just in time for the holiday season, and served as a spirited community competition. Competition continued throughout the annual Kick-Off to Christmas Week with door and tree decorating and holiday dress-out days earning students participation points for their community.

In addition to the larger, community-wide events, leaders are also charged with planning the activities of their House meetings. Most often these activities are meant to be fun-filled opportunities to disconnect from the

demands of academics and allow students a few minutes to relax playing board games, desk ping-pong, and field games in the stadium or gym, to among other activities.

Leaders also find time to encourage spiritual growth as well. Reading the Bible with time set aside for prayer and reflection and leading prayer in the Chapel are just a couple of examples. Recognizing the need to sometimes be still – removed from the constant noise of our world – shows great leadership.

Looking ahead, Catholic Schools Week will include community competitions as we celebrate the gift of Catholic education. All of these competitions will culminate in the awarding of the coveted Viking Cup at the end of the week. Soon newly-elected junior leaders will begin taking the reins as they share in the planning and implementing of activities, under the guidance of their senior leaders. We can’t wait to see how they do!

FROM VIKINGS TO MISSIONARIES –Answering the Call

Tas well. Mr. Chris Kelly taught the Holy Spirit is always guiding us, and not to allow anyone or anything to distract us away from God. “Mr. Kelly was always there for me to talk things out and offer spiritual encouragement.” Tyler also fondly remembers Mr. Latell through the Live Jesus retreats along with hanging out in Mr. Prey’s class.

Today, you will find Tyler on the campus of Duke University working in their Catholic Center, offering bible studies, attending Mass, and witnessing to other young people in their discipleship walk. Tyler and his team are raising awareness and scholarship funds for SEEK, a four-day conference in Washington, D.C. where thousands of college students came together to encounter Jesus Christ and His Church while connecting with peers and experiencing transformation through the sacraments. If you are interested in supporting, or would like to learn more about FOCUS, please visit https://focus.org/campus/ duke-university/ or contact Tyler though his email Tyler. Vasco@focus.org.

he Bishop Verot Catholic High School mission statement ends with “preparing them for lives of faithful service to the teachings of Jesus Christ.” While it is our hope that our alumni continue to serve their community with their time, talent, and treasure – some of our graduates feel called to more. Tyler Vasco is just one of those alumni. Tyler attended the University of Florida after graduating Verot in 2020. During his junior year at UF, he was invited to go on a retreat with Catholic Gators that changed the trajectory of his college experience. Tyler found himself more involved following this with different campus ministry activities, one of which being a student-led rosary group. Tyler still had the wooden rosary he made in Woods with Coach Gill, and despite not knowing how to use it, he resolved to start going daily. During his senior year, as he was completing his studies in Environmental Engineering, he was also considering how he could continue his faith walk and perhaps encourage other students like him. After some research and discernment, Tyler was offered an opportunity with the Fellowship of Catholic University Students or FOCUS, a missionary apostolate bringing the joy of the Gospel to colleges and universities across the country.

Tyler credits his time at Bishop Verot for laying the ground work for where he is today. His path began with Our Lady of Light’s Youth Group, and continued with his religion courses and participation in Live Jesus, later becoming a Live Jesus Retreat leader. Some of his teachers were a great source of encouragement

Madeline Harkness, class of 2023, is also serving as a Catholic missionary. After graduating, Maddie answered the call to join NET Ministries, or National Evangelization Teams,

working with Catholic Ministry leaders across the country ministering directly to the next generation. NET Missionaries work with schools and churches, assisting with retreats and other events for students in grades 6-12. What she finds most gratifying about her work is being able to share Jesus with so many youth and witnessing their beautiful encounters with the Lord.

Maddie feels her time at Verot prepared her for this important next step as she was encouraged and inspired by the staff to create good prayer habits in her everyday life and share her faith boldly. And boldly she has, as she was invited to speak at a Verot Faculty and Staff Retreat last year.

of her favorite memories of Verot is the Live Jesus Retreats, where she learned how important it can be to share her testimony of faith with others. “Sharing our own struggles may help others realize they are not alone and that we are all children of God, deserving of His forgiveness and grace.” Her Theology teachers and retreat leaders all had a positive impact on her, inspiring her for this missionary path.

Like all missionaries, there is a constant need for funding to allow them to continue their great work. If you are interested in learning more about NET Ministries or in helping Maddie, please visit www.netusa.org/donate. BG

The Bishop Verot Alumni Association strives to facilitate communications among alumni. Each year, Bishop Verot hosts the Annual Homecoming Tailgate at the Homecoming Football game and assists in communicating information regarding upcoming Class Reunions.

Alumni Association - Staying Connected

The classes of 1979 and 1984 both celebrated class reunions this fall and spent a little time on campus as well. While this year’s homecoming date change (due to hurricane impacts) made reunions a little more challenging, it is always great to welcome alumni back to the campus. For those considering reunions or returning to campus next football season, the homecoming date will be released this spring on our website.

Adding to the Soundtrack of Your High School Years

The Bishop Verot Art Department struck gold when Mr. Antonio Castillo decided to embrace the challenge of rebuilding its music program. Although Mr. Castillo had intended on leaving Florida after his tenure at another local school ended, all roads pointed in the direction of Bishop Verot. Since his arrival, Mr. Castillo has focused on creating a musical program that is representative of Bishop Verot. “Verot is different from other schools that follow a model with standard music ensembles. We are in the process of searching for our own musical identity so we can find the right fit to channel our talents and express our devotion through music.”

Mr. Castillo wants to provide our students with opportunities to creatively express themselves, not only through the traditional framework of Band, Orchestra, and Choir, but also through Worship Band, Jazz Combos, Pep-Bands and Drumlines, songwriting, and creating music with digital audio workstations. His willingness to nurture the multiple talents and interests of so many young Vikings has not gone unnoticed, and students are beginning to step into the spotlight and share their musicality with our

Viking family. Mr. Castillo is proud of his students’ ability to testify through music. “The students love performing at our worship assemblies. It adds so much to the whole experience, and the students understand that they are creating the soundtrack of their high school years. Most importantly, students understand that we are using music to praise God.”

In addition to using their talents to honor their faith, students who play musical instruments develop their critical thinking skills. “Making music is fun! It is such a high-order thinking skill that it makes all of the channels in your brain work simultaneously, and it does all of this while stimulating your creativity!”

In our interview, Mr. Castillo went on to explain, “Learning music is like learning a second language. Learning how to play an instrument must be approached with consistency and dedication. You build up and develop your skills based on the gains you make in your daily practice. Today, there are many ways to make music, like playing electric guitar or making music with your computer. Still, you must practice and experiment to develop your craft.”

In order to encourage students to practice and experiment daily, Mr. Castillo and the Verot Administration have been hard at work to provide students with a broad palette of music-making

opportunities. Most students who started playing instruments within the traditional band set up will take the Concert Band Class. This group of students establishes the foundation for the Viking Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble. Verot also offers a Modern Band class for students who want to play Rock or Pop or for those who just want to learn how to play non-traditional instruments. The Worship Band class is reserved for musically advanced students who also want to be a part of the Praise Band. Music Production class enables students to learn the basics of songwriting, sound recording, and editing. Drumline Club, open to all students with or without experience, welcomes students of all abilities.

In January of 2025, students will be able to register for Advanced Placement Music Theory . This class focuses on Music Theory and composition in addition to incorporating aspects of Western Music History. Students who take and pass Advanced Placement courses in music will receive college credit from the College Board. Mr. Castillo noted the added benefits of playing an instrument in a band when it comes to college applications. “Some colleges give scholarships to musicians who are not majoring in music; it’s true. But what really matters the most

is what admissions officers look for when sorting through college applications. They want students who are creative, resilient, and dedicated, team players. They want students who can contribute to college life and their community. Music checks all of those boxes!”

If you are a student who loves to make music, or if you have a talented young Viking who would like to learn more about making music, be sure to register in the spring for the next academic year’s music classes. Mr. Castillo hopes more students choose to take advantage of the multiple music making opportunities at Bishop Verot. He believes students are missing out on something rewarding and exciting if they love music and choose not to participate. “I cannot imagine giving up music-making, especially if you have done it before or know how to play an instrument.” So, don’t be shy. Come and join one of the many Bishop Verot Catholic High School Bands. If you have any specific questions that you would like to ask about musical opportunities at Bishop Verot High School, you can contact Mr. Castillo at antonio.castillo@bvhs.org.

And to our alumni readers –please be sure to join us for our next concert or musical event. We promise it will be worth it! BG
