Firstly, what is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to other people, and our choices and whether they are healthy or not. We all have mental health, whether you like it or not.

What factors affect our mental health?

What does mental health have to do with school?

Research on a recent survey, showed that after home, school was the main cause of teenagers’ mental health. This could be influenced by things such as tests, assessments and also homework! Different people can be affected by school in different ways

Know someone struggling with their mental health?

Firstly, it’s never okay to suffer in silence. You should always reach out if you’re not feeling 100% - but remember – it’s okay to not be okay! But what’s not okay is to not be okay alone. Make sure, if you or someone else feeling down, then you turn that frown upside down and ensure that they’re feeling better as soon as possible. There are loads of different ways; talking to them, watching a film with them, eating your favourite food with them, or even just talking to them! These are all ways that you can help ensure that you and your friend’s mental health is the best it can be.

TEMU AND SHEIN

unveiling the truth behind their factory walls

You have probably heard of these ‘cheap’ companies, who were able to gain much of their popularity from being cheap, HOWEVER they have a dark side. On the surface, it looks like you’re shopping for fun things & getting them for LOW PRICES, but did you ever think about the reasons why they’re so low? Child labour...

It has also been reported that people receiving packages with special notes saying ‘HELP ME!’ or ‘SAVE ME PLEASE’. These are obvious pleads for help, being sent by the children pressured/forced into slave labour by these big manufacturing companies.

These children are experiencing 70+ working hours a week. In comparison, we only go to school for 25 hours a week. That’s like working from 7am-7pm, every day, from Monday to Sunday. It’s not healthy for them, and can destroy any chance of a future for them. It’s not right, these working conditions are poor and less than satisfactory (so to say).

TO BE CLEAR, these are nothing more than ALLEGATIONS as there has been no clear concrete evidence that has forced governments to intervene, especially since it is such a sensitive topic.

Overall, we are trying to show you how, what you buy and where you buy it from, and you don’t want to find out after it becomes too late.

On September 2nd, 2024, Charli XCX officially declared Brat Summer as over. So, what exactly is Brat Summer?

Inspired by Charli XCX’s new album, Brat, which was released on 7th June 2024, Brat Summer is a vibe and sensational trend, defined by a sickening lime green colour and manic energy. The Brat Summer hype is an aesthetic way of life, essentially, the grungy and hedonistic vibes of the 80s and 90s mingled with 2024 millennial and Gen Z anxiety.

Brat Summer is a movement designed to help you live your best life and inspire you to not care so much about life’s trials and turbulations. Brat Summer is a rejection of traditional societal norms but also new ones like the expectation that you should be organised and have your act together. The trend embraces the idea that you are doing your best and that is enough.

Interestingly, politics has interwoven itself within the pop culture trend with the Democrat presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, scattering references to the album across her account, and renaming her profile to Kamala HQ. Her rebrand came from Charli XCX’s support when she tweeted ‘Kamala IS brat’ shortly after Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed his vice president.

However, just because Brat Summer is over does not mean you can’t still be a brat! In my opinion Brat Winter is real and should be acknowledged just the same. Never forget to show your inner brat. As Charli XCX says in her song, 365, just do it on repeat!

In the quiet town of Raviabad, whispers of old legends danced through the air like shadows in the night. Ayesha Malik had always been drawn to the alluring stories her Nani, Amina, had told her. They were tales of jinn's and rituals that echoed from generations past. Every month, under the watchful gaze of the full moon, Amina performed a sacred ritual, a delicate procedure meant to keep the malevolent spirit, Manjeena, at bay. Ayesha and her family thought the ritual was foolish, everyone knows jinn's aren’t real. Your Nani is crazy, her mother always said. Still, the idea of witnessing or even taking part in a ritual captivated her.

One day, whilst her family were out at the supermarket, Ayesha was left at home with her Nani. Ayesha sat on the sofa, idly scrolling on her phone. Full moon tonight, she thought to herself as she checked the date. Her mind wandered to Amina’s ritual, performed every month without fail. The ritual room had a circular skylight at the top, so when the ritual took place, the moon would be directly above. Just then, her Nani hobbled into the room. She was a short, plump woman in her early 70s with a warm, reassuring presence. Ayesha looked up from her phone. It was odd for Amina to journey out of the ritual room, unless she had something to say or was hungry. Usually the latter. Her Nani took a deep breath.

‘Ayesha,’ she said slowly. ‘Tonight is the ritual night. Your parents are out and will not be back for a while.’ she continued. Ayesha nodded, sitting up straight, wondering what this conversation was leading up to.

‘It has always been my intention to involve you in my divine works, but it was always your parents' wishes that forbade me to ask.

‘Even though they firmly disbelieve in what I do, I know they want to keep you safe, regardless of whether there is actually any harm.’ said Amina. Ayesha’s eyes widened as she realised what her grandmother was getting at. ‘You would be under my complete protection. I am a practiced ritualist. Would you care to join me tonight?’ her Nani finally asked. Ayesha almost jumped off the sofa with glee. She nodded eagerly. ‘Of course, I would love to join you!’ exclaimed Ayesha. Amina nodded and beckoned her to follow. Ayesha could not contain herself. Finally, she would get to see the ritual! If only she knew how much she would regret it...

Ayesha followed her Nani eagerly into the ritual room. It was illuminated with light from the full moon directly above. Everything shimmered in dazzling silver. In the centre of the room, an ornate circle of some unknown powder lay on the floor, candles surrounding it. All in all, the room both impressed and intimidated Ayesha.

Her Nani sat down on a plush red cushion. Ayesha sat opposite her. She buzzed with impatience. ‘So,’ she began to say, before she was cut off by a dismissive noise from Amina. Her Nani mouthed wordlessly, no sound coming out. Ayesha felt an eerie chill pass through her. Amina’s words gradually became audible, speaking in a foreign tongue. The candles around the circle began to flicker and sway wildly. Her Nani switched to English, looking at her. ‘Repeat after me,’ she said. Ayesha nodded. ‘Oh, Spirit of the Dark,’ she began. Ayesha took a deep breath in before repeating after her. ‘O-oh, Spirit of the D-dark,’ said Ayesha, mentally scolding herself for stuttering. ‘We bound you under the night of the full moon. Oh, Manjeena, we shackle you once more to the confines of this circle,’ said Amina. Ayesha repeated it slowly.

Her Nani took a candle casting her hand over it. The candle immediately went out. Ayesha gasped silently. In the middle of the circle, a golden vapour swirled around, rising to the ceiling. ‘Take a candle and blow it out,’ Amina instructed. Ayesha slowly picked up a candle, her hands shaking. ‘Focus,’ said her Nani.

Ayesha stared at her hand, wondering how she could possibly extinguish the fire with a flourish. Suddenly, the door swung open. Ayesha dropped the candle in alarm. The candle fell to the ground, the flames disintegrating the powdered circle. The fire immediately went out. Ayesha turned quickly to the door. Her sister, Naina, waved a phone frantically. ‘Ayesha, why don’t you carry your phone on you? I’ve been ringing for ages!’ her sister said, rolling her eyes. Her Nani gasped loudly. Ayesha looked back. The golden vapour had turned a crimson shade. ‘The circle has been broken!’ cried Amina. It swirled around the room. A cacophonous cackle reverberated across the room. In an instant, the vapour formed a straight line and arrowed into Naina’s mouth. Her sister arched back and levitated above the ground. ‘What’s happening?!’ screamed Ayesha. Her Nani stood up; arms held out. ‘Leave the girl alone!’ she said. Naina straightened, still hovering in the air. Her eyes glowed bright yellow. A guttural voice completely unlike Naina’s came out of her mouth. ‘My time has come!’ said the voice. She shot out her arms, a blinding light arcing across the room. Ayesha fell back, hurtling to the floor. She blacked out.

Ayesha...Wake up... Ayesha’s eyes fluttered open. The ritual room was empty, the candles scattered on the floor the only remnant of her disastrous mistake. Her head throbbed with pain as she sat up, looking around. Nani and her sister were nowhere to be seen. Ayesha groaned; her vision blurred as she tried to make sense of her surroundings.

The once-vibrant ritual room now felt hollow, the shimmering silver light replaced by shadows that seemed to crawl along the walls. “Nani? Naina?” she called out, her voice cracking helplessly. Silence answered her, save for the faint echo of her own words. The air was thick, heavy with the lingering scent of burnt candles and something metallic like blood. She stumbled to her feet, her legs trembling. Ayesha’s mind raced. Had she imagined it? Was it all some bizarre dream? But the memory of Naina’s glowing eyes and that voice that voice sent chills down her spine. She turned toward the door, but it was no longer the simple wooden frame she had walked through earlier.

Now it seemed warped, pulsating faintly as though alive. Her instinct screamed to leave, but something inside her whispered otherwise. She needed answers. She needed to find her family. On the floor near the broken circle, Ayesha noticed a faint glow emanating from the remnants of the powdered line. She crouched, hesitating before touching it. The powder was warm, almost pulsing under her fingertips. As she traced the broken line, she heard a faint whisper soft and almost melodic.

"Ayesha... Ayesha..." The voice was unmistakably her Nani's. “Nani?!” she gasped, whipping her head around. The whisper grew louder, pulling her gaze toward the skylight above. The full moon was no longer visible; instead, the glass reflected something entirely unnatural a crimson sky swirling with dark clouds. The whisper turned into a scream. Ayesha clutched her ears, falling to her knees. “What do you want from me?!” she shouted. The glow from the powder intensified, forming words on the floor. Seek the Lantern. Ayesha blinked. “Lantern? What lantern?” she muttered, her voice trembling. She tried to steady herself, her fingers brushing against something cold and metallic. She picked it up a small pendant, one she recognized immediately. It was Naina’s favorite: a simple silver locket shaped like a crescent moon.

Tears welled up in Ayesha’s eyes. “Naina... I’m so sorry,” she whispered. She clutched the pendant tightly, standing up with newfound determination. Whatever had happened to her sister and Nani, she had to make it right.

The house seemed darker than usual as Ayesha stepped into the hallway. The lights flickered, casting eerie shadows that danced along the walls. She reached for her phone, only to remember she’d left it on the sofa. Typical. Taking a deep breath, she decided to head upstairs to her Nani’s room. If there were any clues about what had happened, they’d be in there. As she climbed the stairs, a faint humming filled the air. It was low, almost imperceptible at first, but it grew louder with each step. By the time she reached the landing, it was a full melody a haunting lullaby she hadn’t heard since childhood. Her Nani used to sing it to her and Naina before bed. The door to Nani’s room was ajar. Pushing it open, Ayesha found the room in disarray.

Drawers were overturned; books scattered across the floor. On the desk, a single object stood untouched a brass lantern etched with intricate patterns. It glowed faintly, a soft golden light that pulsed in time with her heartbeat. “Is this the lantern?” she whispered, stepping closer. As she reached out, the humming stopped. The silence was deafening. The moment her fingers touched the lantern, the room spun. Ayesha cried out as she was pulled into a vortex of light and sound. She felt weightless, her surroundings a blur of colors and shapes. And then, just as suddenly as it started, it stopped. Ayesha found herself standing in a vast desert under a blood-red sky. The air was dry, heavy with the scent of sulfur. In the distance, she could see a figure a young girl standing alone, her back to Ayesha. The girl wore a white dress that billowed in a non-existent wind. “Naina!” Ayesha shouted, running toward her. But as she got closer, her steps faltered.

The girl turned around, and Ayesha froze. It wasn’t Naina. The face was distorted, the features flickering between her sister’s and something monstrous. “Why did you let me go?” the girl hissed, her voice echoing unnaturally. Ayesha’s breath hitched. “I I didn’t mean to! Please, I’m trying to fix this!” The girl’s face twisted into a sinister grin. “You can’t fix what’s already broken.” Her form began to shift, elongating unnaturally. Her shadow stretched toward Ayesha, wrapping around her like tendrils. Ayesha screamed, clutching the lantern. Its golden glow burst forth, forcing the shadow back. The creature recoiled, shrieking as it dissolved into the crimson sky.

The lantern’s light dimmed, leaving Ayesha alone in the desert once more. She fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face. “I’ll find you, Naina,” she vowed, clutching the pendant around her neck. “I don’t care what it takes.”

The end.

Chewing gum has become a common habit for a number of reasons, including stress reduction, to help quit smoking, reducing food cravings, and just plain enjoyment. Unfortunately, this seemingly harmless habit can have a number of negative side effects on your health and can even damage your health.

Is it alright to swallow chewing gum?

In rare cases, swallowing a large mass of gum, or many small pieces of gum over a short period of time, can block the digestive tract. Blockages are more likely to happen when gum is swallowed along with other indigestible things (like sunflower seed shells).

The situation at the Amazon

Now days, deforestation has become one of the most serious issues that happens in the world it happens because of illegal deforestation which is our consequence of climate change and endangering species

The world’s most endangered by deforestation is the Amazon rainforest

If the Amazon rainforest where to become extinct the forest cover would no longer be there, so more heat will be reflected into the atmosphere causing the temperatures to rise.

Furthermore, Brazil is the biggest contributor to greenhouse gases, and this is crucial with keeping a sustainable temperature for life It is believed the Amazon Rainforest is over 55 million years old and in 100 years it is likely that most, if not all of it will be destroyed.

Our environment consists of all things living and non-living It can be classified as natural environment and built environment You can define the natural environment as something that has been in existence for long and built environment is like the cities and the population of countries The physical environment consists of thing that they have not been built like volcanoes and typhoons we cannot control how they form.

Global warming is happening because every time someone chops down a forest or tree the sun heats will reflect off the ground, back up into our atmosphere warming our planet

The burning of trees is one of the fastest processes of deforestation it promotes the Greenhouse gases such as Carbon dioxide These types of greenhouse gases are very hazardous and dangerous in high amounts. Trees reduce soil erosion almost to zero percent which increase after the process of deforestation.

The situation at the Amazon

Hello all! Within the following body of text, I would like to display something which we don’t often have the fortune of doing within our standard curriculum here at BVGS. I’m sure all of us can agree that the languages department provided within the school as of current is of an extremely high standard and one of the best throughout the country.

However, there is an aspect of study which we can derive from all languages that we as of current do not partake in within the provided language education. This is of course the art of literature. Literature is often a neglected aspect as we regard it as unimportant when we attain information about other languages; we only need to have enough to give us well versed knowledge of general conversation. I intend to bring your attention towards this matter now. For the piece of foreign literature in today's newspaper I would like to cover the critically acclaimed Bengali poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861-7 August 1941) was a Bengali poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer, and painter of the Bengal Renaissance.

He is often associated with revolutionizing Bengali literature and music alongside Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was the first ever non-European author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature with his “profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful” Gitanjali. Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and animated which is likely the reasoning behind why he is not only the Author of the Bangladeshi National Anthem but Also the Indian National Anthem. He was also a powerful figure being readily available to denounce the British Raj and Advocate for Independence.

- Ange Postecoglou on thin ice at Tottenham

With six defeats in their past 10 games, a loss to their bitter North London rivals and being even closer to the relegation zone than the top four, things are going from bad to worse for Tottenham.

Wednesday's 2-1 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium leaves Spurs in 13th with 24 points, 14 off Newcastle in fourth but just eight above 18th-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.

There would be a brief moment of cheer for Tottenham fans in the game when Son Heung-min fired them ahead in the 25th minute, but that was to be the last time they managed a shot on target as Arsenal scored twice in four minutes to win. Ange Postecoglou’s future at the club seems to be slipping further and further away with each painstaking match...

"I feel like a million dollars. I had to put on a show for my grandma."

Myles Lewis-Skelly's pure joy and huge, infectious smile after he won his first north London derby captured the feeling around the 18-year-old's breakthrough season for Arsenal The Islington-born academy graduate was speaking to Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who was working as a TV pundit on the Gunners' vital 2-1 Premier League win against local rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

Watching the footage back with Wright, the teenager was asked how he felt in that moment

"Just happy. Just taking it in, soaking it in. Yes sir! This is amazing man," Lewis-Skelly said. "My mum was here, my family, my friends. I had to put on a show for my grandma, make sure that I didn't look soft in front of her. I had to make sure I was winning my tackles for her and hopefully she was proud of me. "It was everything that lived up to my dreams. I had to take in every moment. I was not afraid of anyone. I want to be the best and you've got to go up against the best. "I feel pressure, but this is what we live for. I feel like a million dollars," he added.
