Mount Carmel: 125 Years of Care, Compassion and Community

125 YEARS AGO… In the early 1880s, William Hawkes, M.D., President of the Board of the Columbus Medical College, recognized the need for another hospital in the growing city of about 85,000 residents.

He enlisted the support of fellow Board member John Hamilton, M.D., who made Dr. Hawkes’ vision a reality after Dr. Hawkes died during the planning of the hospital.

Construction on the new hospital began in the spring of 1885.

With the consent of the Right Reverend Sylvester Horton Rosecrans, Bishop of Columbus, Dr. Hamilton approached the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Notre Dame, Indiana, and asked them to manage the new hospital.

At first, their answer was “No, we are sorry – there aren’t enough Sisters.”

But Dr. Hamilton didn’t give up, and his request was eventually granted.

On July 5, 1886, Mother Angela Gillespi and Sister Rufina Dunn arrived in Columbus to bring the new hospital to life.

To help put the era into context, Americans that year: • Celebrated the dedication of the Statue of Liberty.

• Sampled a new beverage called Coca-Cola.

• Visited two new stores called Bloomingdale’s and Sears Roebuck.

• Were captivated by the wedding of President Grover Cleveland.

Two weeks after the arrival of Mother Angela and Sister Rufina, the new hospital opened its doors on July 16, 1886, and was dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel – whose feast was celebrated on that day.

The hospital was named Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel in honor of Dr. Hawkes – and of course today is Mount Carmel West.

Twenty-two years after the opening of Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel, the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity opened St. Ann’s Infant Asylum on Bryden Road near downtown Columbus. The facility later became St. Ann’s Hospital, moved to Westerville and joined Mount Carmel Health System.

As Mount Carmel Health System celebrates its 125th anniversary, this is a good time to review and renew our commitment to our mission and think about the good work that has unfolded over the decades and continues to evolve as we strive to fulfill our mission: “We serve together at Mount Carmel in Trinity Health”…from a mere handful of Sisters then to a team of more than 8,000 associates, 1,500 physicians and 1,000 volunteers today…“in the spirit of the Gospel”…helping fulfill Jesus’ healing ministry…“to heal body, mind and spirit”…treating the whole person, who is made in the image of God…“to improve the health of our communities”…responsive to the healthcare needs of all those we serve regardless of socio-economic status…“and to steward the resources entrusted to us”…utilizing our resources wisely to ensure the future of the ministry.

Over the past 125 years, Mount Carmel has grown and evolved beyond the original Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel to fulfill its mission and meet the community’s healthcare needs: • 1903 – Excellence in nursing education spans more than a century from the founding of the School of Nursing to its transition into a College of Nursing in 1990.

• 1972 – Mount Carmel East opened on land the Holy Cross Sisters purchased on the east side six decades earlier for agricultural and recreational use.

• 1984 – “Mount Carmel Health” was incorporated as an umbrella corporation for all Mount Carmel facilities, programs and services. Also, that year, Mount Carmel launched its Care Continuum Businesses division, composed of such programs and services as the community outreach program, home care, hospice care, home medical equipment and an ambulance service.

The building in the foreground with the cross was the Mount Carmel Chapel, which was torn down in the early 1980s to make room for the Medical Staff Building. The stained glass windows in the MSB Auditorium today were preserved from the Chapel.

• 1995 – St. Ann’s Hospital joined Mount Carmel Health, which was renamed “Mount Carmel Health System.”

• 2007 – New Albany Surgical Hospital, which opened in 2003, joined Mount Carmel Health System and became known as Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital.

• 2010 – Diley Ridge Medical Center opened in Canal Winchester as a joint venture between Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center.

Origin Of The Name “Mount Carmel” “Mount Carmel” refers to a mountain – actually a small mountain range – located on the northern coast of Israel along the Mediterranean Sea. In Hebrew, the word “Carmel” means “God’s vineyard” or “garden” and refers to Mount Carmel’s more than 450 species of plants.

Mount Carmel has a significant history in the Bible in the Old Testament. Perhaps most notably, the Hebrew Prophet Elijah challenged the priests of pagan god Baal to pray to their god to break an unrelenting drought. Meanwhile, Elijah would pray to the Hebrew God,Yahweh. When Yahweh revealed Himself and responded with a healing rain, the people praised Him and accepted Him as their God. -6-

Mount Carmel’s Corporate Services Center Outside of the hospitals, Mount Carmel’s Corporate Services Center houses the largest number of associates (more than 850) in one location.

Known simply as the “CSC,” the facility’s name was deliberately selected so that its initials would serve as a tribute to the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross since Holy Cross Sisters use the written designation “CSC” after their names.

The CSC houses many corporate functions, including Patient Financial Services, Finance, Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, The Mount Carmel Foundation, the Quality & Safety Center, Legal, Regulatory Services, MediGold, Strategy and System Development, Ambulatory Services and the Outreach program.

The CSC building is large – more than two-and-a-half football fields long with more than 450,000 square feet of space. It was built in 1958 by AT&T using metal wall panels, which first became available in the 1950s and were used for their high strength, light weight, low maintenance and longevity.

In 2003, the developer who acquired the Lucent Technologies property gifted part of the facility and land to Mount Carmel. It’s interesting to note that the land actually was returning to Mount Carmel since it had been part of the farmland the Holy Cross Sisters purchased in 1908 and later sold.

Mount Carmel West: At Mount Carmel West, the richness of Mount Carmel’s history is literally all around. Visitors encounter Mount Carmel West’s history in many ways, including through the statues of saints located around the campus and through preserved stained glass windows.

Even the entrance to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Park (located on the west side of the hospital) has historic significance, with entry stairs and wrought iron gates that are reminiscent of the Sisters of the Holy Cross convent that used to be located on this site.

In the mid-1950s, visitors climbed a short flight of stairs to enter the hospital’s main entrance and encountered an intricate seal of the Sisters of the Holy Cross set into the entryway floor.

Where It All Began The entrance hall was flanked with marble panels that were popular in public buildings during the era. These fixtures remain today, gracing the floor and walls of the Health Information Management department on the third floor of the east wing of Sister Rose Thomas Hall.

A treasure trove of history lies within the walls themselves. When the hospital was built, all of the private rooms boasted fireplaces. The fireplace hearths are gone – now concealed within the walls – but across the rooftops of the oldest structures of the hospital, remnants of chimneys remain.

Today, Mount Carmel West offers a full range of medical, surgical and outpatient services. The hospital is a Level II trauma center, treating the

most severely injured patients. In 2010, Mount Carmel West (jointly with Mount Carmel East) was named among the top 50 hospitals in the U.S. for inpatient cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters, a leading international health data/information company.

In 2011, the Ohio Department of Health designated the Mount Carmel West Maternity Services department with Level III status, recognizing its ability to care for the sickest infants, including premature newborns. Mount Carmel West also has received The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification for stroke care, and the hospital also is accredited as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention by the international Society of Chest Pain

Centers. To receive this accreditation, hospitals must demonstrate proficiency in the early assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes like heart attack.

Mount Carmel West has a proud history as a teaching hospital. Mount Carmel’s Graduate Medical Education program is based at Mount Carmel West and is composed of residency programs in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Transitional Year. The residency programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

125 Years of Care, Compassion and Community Mount Carmel St. Ann’s: From Infant Asylum To Community Hospital The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity opened St. Ann’s Infant Asylum in 1908 at the request of Columbus Bishop James Hartley. The Sisters were already caring for children at the St.Vincent’s Orphanage, but saw that “no provisions had been made for those unfortunate little ones who, on the very threshold of life, are abandoned by poor or guilty parents.”

After beginning as an infant asylum, the facility transitioned into the

St. Ann’s Hospital for Women in 1920.

The hospital began treating male patients in 1972 and was renamed St. Ann’s Hospital.

In 1984, St. Ann’s moved from its location near downtown Columbus to its current location in Westerville.

St. Ann’s joined Mount Carmel in 1995 and was later renamed Mount Carmel St. Ann’s.

Today, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s offers a full range of medical, surgical and outpatient services, and the

Maternity Pavilion welcomes nearly 5,000 newborns a year. In 2007, the Ohio Department of Health designated Mount Carmel St. Ann’s maternity services with Level III status, recognizing its ability to care for the sickest infants, including premature newborns.

Mount Carmel St. Ann’s also is accredited as a Chest Pain Center with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention by the international Society of Chest Pain Centers.

Mount Carmel St. Ann’s is in the midst of a $110 million expansion project as it becomes a regional medical center serving a growing service area.

Mount Carmel East: Growing Along With Its Communities When Mount Carmel East opened its doors in 1972, the far east side of Columbus was still in the early stages of growth. In fact, some sections of Interstate 270 on the east side were not yet completed.

It was built on land originally purchased by the Holy Cross Sisters decades earlier for farming and recreation.

While some who worked at Mount Carmel East when it opened say it’s not true, legend has it that the day the hospital opened, its first “patient” was a horse with an injured hoof brought in by a neighboring farmer.

In its early years, some Mount Carmel West staff referred to Mount Carmel East as “the country club” because of the quiet, laid-back atmosphere given what was viewed as the hospital’s remote location. No more.

Over the years, Mount Carmel East has grown along with the communities it serves as reflected by its hustling and bustling campus today.

As it approaches its 40th anniversary next April, Mount Carmel East offers a wide range of medical, surgical and outpatient services and has the busiest adult emergency department in greater Columbus.

In 2010, Mount Carmel East (jointly with Mount Carmel West) was named among the top 50 hospitals in the U.S. for inpatient cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters, a leading international health data/information company.

125 Years of Care, Compassion and Community Mount Carmel New Albany: A Focused Approach To Care In 2003, several Columbus-area orthopedic surgeons built New Albany Surgical Hospital specializing in orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The hospital joined Mount Carmel Health System in 2007 and was renamed Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital.

In early 2011, Mount Carmel New Albany completed an expansion project that included 18 new inpatient beds for a total of 60 beds. It also included space for four additional operating rooms that can be built out in the future as needed.

Mount Carmel New Albany has experienced significant growth since opening in 2003. The hospital has

attracted patients from 33 states, the District of Columbia,Venezuela and Mexico. Mount Carmel New Albany and its medical staff have hosted physician visitors from 13 countries, including Japan, Spain, Belgium, Chile, the United Kingdom and Australia.

Mount Carmel New Albany has received The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification in hip and knee joint replacement surgery and in spinal surgery. The certification recognizes programs that demonstrate compliance with national standards and effective and consistent use of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

Mount Carmel New Albany also has received national recognition for its patient satisfaction. The hospital is among a select group of hospitals nationally to receive the Press Ganey Associates “Summit Award” for sustained excellence in patient satisfaction five years in a row. To be considered for the award, hospitals must rank in the 95th percentile or higher in patient satisfaction for at least three years in a row.

Mount Carmel College Of Nursing: A Legacy of Nursing Education The Sisters of the Holy Cross opened the doors of the Mount Carmel Training School for Nurses on September 15, 1903. There were 13 female students enrolled in the threeyear program: five lay women and eight Sisters.

Applicants to the Mount Carmel Training School for Nurses had to be between age 19 and 30, of average height and weight, and in good health.

A statement from their physician was required, as well as one from their pastor testifying to their good moral characte character. hospital’s chicken yard. The first tuition fees were $100 for the first year, $45 for the second, and $35 for the third year. Students paid for their own uniforms and shoes.

The School of Nursing became Mount Carmel College of Nursing in 1990, a significant accomplishment spearheaded by current President and Dean, Ann Schiele, R.N., PhD. Today Mount Carmel College of Nursing offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in nursing, an Online RN-BSN Completion Program, a Second Degree Accelerated Program, a Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education, an RN Refresher Course and a Dietetic Internship.

This fall for the 2011-12 academic year, the College will herald record enrollment with more than 850 students – making it one of the largest nursing baccalaureate degree-granting programs in Ohio.

Diley Ridge Medical Center – Central Ohio’s First Freestanding Emergency Care Center Diley Ridge Medical Center, central Ohio’s first freestanding emergency care center, opened in Canal Winchester in March 2010 as a joint venture between Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center.

The campus includes a 35,000-square-foot emergency care center that gives residents of northern Fairfield County and beyond immediate access to emergency services 24 hours a day, seven days a week; diagnostic, imaging and other services; a 46,000-square-foot medical office building housing specialty and primary care physicians; and a Nationwide Children’s Hospital “Close To Home Center.”

Diley Ridge was projected to treat 10,000 patients in its first year of operation, and increase to 16,000 patients by its fifth year. In actuality, the facility treated more than 20,000 patients by the end of its first year.

Diley Ridge Medical Center also earned LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and became Ohio’s first hospital to receive that designation. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance “green” buildings.

Diley Ridge is an example of Mount Carmel’s commitment to growing programs and services to help meet the healthcare needs of our communities, and to do so in partnership with others when possible.

Mount Carmel Outreach: Serving Vulnerable Populations From the beginning, Mount Carmel’s tradition has been to direct its community outreach programs to evolve as the community’s needs have evolved. When Mother Angela and the Sisters of the Holy Cross opened Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel in 1886, they had a simple mission: to care for the sick, regardless of their ability to pay. As the world has changed, Mount Carmel’s core mission has been unwavering for 125 years.

After Sister Gladys Marie Martin, CSC, came to Mount Carmel as CEO in 1983, she recognized a need to organize Mount Carmel’s outreach efforts. She directed the formation of the Mount Carmel Community Service Corporation in 1985, which included a community Outreach program.

Initial outreach efforts were at three locations, led by Sister Patricia Ann Carroll, CSC. The 1990s were a period of growth for the program. The Outreach staff was visiting 20 community sites by 1995 when Mount Carmel purchased a van to support outreach efforts. In 1998, Mount Carmel purchased a larger vehicle – a mobile coach which served as a fully equipped “medical office on wheels.”

Around the time Mount Carmel purchased the mobile coach, the Ohio Department of Health conducted a study on infant mortality that showed that Franklinton (where Mount Carmel West is located) had the worst mortality statistics in the county. At 21 deaths per 1,000 infants, the neighborhood’s rate was much higher than the national average of 7 deaths per 1,000 infants.

For 10 years, Outreach staff went door-to-door in targeted low-income neighborhoods offering vaccinations for infants and children. The immunization program, called “Healthy Hot Shots,” received the Catholic Health Association’s highest award – the Achievement Citation – in 2005.

In 1999, the Outreach program began visiting Vinton County in southeastern Ohio, one of the poorest counties in the state. Mount Carmel collaborated with the county health department and other local organizations to improve access to needed healthcare services through routine visits by the Outreach mobile coach. The county eventually established a federally qualified health center to

meet community health needs, so the Outreach mobile coach now travels to Vinton County on an as-needed basis.

In 2010, Outreach replaced its aging mobile coach with a new mobile coach that continues to provide primary care, minor surgeries, immunizations, physicals, education, referrals and case management to people in need at soup kitchens, homeless shelters, schools and in low income neighborhoods.

In 2003, Mount Carmel launched a federally qualified health center (FQHC) called Capital Park Family Health to care for under-served populations. FQHCs are eligible for federal grants and receive enhanced Medicare and Medicaid funding for primarily serving vulnerable populations. In 2008, Mount Carmel transitioned Capital Park (renamed Heart of Ohio Family Health Centers) into an independent facility. Mount Carmel continues to provide financial support for the FQHC – as well as another FQHC located in Franklinton named Lower Lights Christian Health Center.

Today, Outreach programs are supported by the Mount Carmel Foundation, allowing staff members to visit nine sites throughout the community on a regular basis, visit other locations as requested, and attend many community special events.

In its newest program, Street Medicine, Outreach staff visit “tent villages” and other locations where the homeless “live on the land” in the woods along the Scioto River near downtown Columbus. Street Medicine is an example of Mount Carmel’s commitment to proactively seeking ways to meet the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations where they live.

One hundred and twenty-five years after the founding of Mount Carmel, the Outreach program continues the Sisters’ tradition of caring for the poor and under-served.

Physicians Dr. William Hawkes and Dr. John Hamilton begin to plan for a new hospital to serve the growing city of Columbus. The Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Indiana, are asked to run the new hospital.

Mother M. Angela and Sister M. Rufina Dunn turn a sturdy four-story red brick building – with two wards, eighteen private rooms, an operating room, and an amphitheater – into Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel.

The Sisters of St. Francis open St. Ann’s Infant Asylum, at Bryden Road and Rose Avenue (now Kelton Avenue), to protect and care for orphaned infants and unwed mothers.

The Mount Carmel Training School for Nursing begins offering students “all that science and intellect can afford.” It is the first in the United States to be nationally accredited.

1920 St. Ann’s Infant Asylum becomes St. Ann’s Hospital for Women and begins providing maternity care. More than 230 children were born at St. Ann’s that year.

St. Ann’s Hospital for Women is remodeled to offer expanded maternity services and gynecological care in response to a decrease in home deliveries.

A Department of Medicine and General Surgery opens at St. Ann’s.

The culmination of five years’ work, Mount Carmel East opens on the east side of Columbus. The 233-bed hospital is situated on a 140-acre farm purchased in 1908.

St. Ann’s Hospital opens its doors to the first male patient in its 64-year history.

Hawkes Hospital of Mount Carmel is renamed Mount Carmel Medical Center.

The Mount Carmel Community Service Corporation is formed to facilitate community needs in outreach, hospice, wellness, home care, and other services.

1990 Mount Carmel School of Nursing becomes Mount Carmel College of Nursing when it begins offering a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The Holy Cross Sisters purchase 140 acres on the east side of Columbus – complete with cows, horses, chickens, hogs, and farm implements – for use as a farm and for recreation and relaxation. The property included portions of present-day Mount Carmel East, Forrest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Lucent Technologies and Mount Carmel’s Corporate Services Center.

St. Ann’s Hospital is relocated to its present site in Westerville in order to meet the needs of the city’s growing population and in surrounding communities.

1993 The Bruce E. Siegel Center for Health Education is added onto Mount Carmel East Hospital to provide a resource for community education.

Mount Carmel celebrates its 100th anniversary.

1995 St. Ann’s Hospital joins Mount Carmel Health, which is renamed “Mount Carmel Health System”.

2007 New Albany Surgical Hospital joins Mount Carmel Health System and is renamed Mount Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital.

2008 Mount Carmel’s nationally recognized Palliative Care Program celebrates its 10th anniversary.

2011 Mount Carmel celebrates its 125th anniversary.

Several Columbus-area orthopedic surgeons build New Albany Surgical Hospital specializing in orthopedic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation.

2007 The first free standing student residence complex opens at Mount Carmel College of Nursing and is known as Angela Hall and Holy Cross Hall.

2010 Diley Ridge Medical Center, the first free-standing emergency department in central Ohio, opens as a joint venture between Mount Carmel Health System and Fairfield Medical Center.

2000 A dedicated cancer center opens at Mount Carmel St. Ann’s.

2004 The Center for Learning and Education opens on the Mount Carmel West campus, housing a new library, learning labs, meeting rooms as well as more classroom and office space for Mount Carmel College of Nursing.

2008 Mount Carmel St. Ann’s celebrates its 100th anniversary.

2010 Mount Carmel Hospice celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Mount Carmel New Albany expansion is completed, adding 18 new inpatient beds for a total of 60 beds.

$110 million expansion of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s launches to help elevate the hospital into a regional medical center serving its growing communities.

Allison Paugh: Meet Allison Paugh – This ‘Diamond’ is a True GEM In just two short years, Allison Paugh has made quite a remarkable impression on Mount Carmel Health System. So much so, the Mount Carmel East medical/surgical nurse was chosen as the 2011 GEM Diamond Award winner.

Allison was chosen out of 31 Ruby Award winners for “consistently going out of her way to meet the needs of her patients.”

“I am so grateful to work for Mount Carmel Health System,” beams Allison.

“It feels amazing to be recognized for doing what I love to do.”

Being a nurse is Allison’s second career. She attended Otterbein

University and graduated with a degree in music and business. She sang and played piano in the concert choir and traveled internationally including to Hungary, Austria and Japan to perform.

“I love to travel, so it was an unbelievable experience!” recalls Allison.

“Now, I have my heart set on taking an African Safari. Three weeks in that incredible environment would be an absolute dream come true!”

It was an unfortunate event that led Allison down the path toward a healthcare career. Her father-in-law was in an automobile accident resulting an extended stay in an intensive care unit.

“It was very bad and could have very easily been fatal,” remembers Allison. “We were all so anxious and worried. The staff that took care of him was very welcoming. They treated us with respect and care. They took the time to answer our questions and were very receptive to our requests.”

Allison was in the process of looking for a new career, and this experience became an “ah-ha” moment for her.

“I am such a people person. Being a nurse seemed like a great fit to me,” states Allison. “It mixed technical knowledge with personal care skills.

That’s the best of both worlds for me.”

More Than a GEM Allison’s work in the Mount Carmel East Oncology Palliative Care Unit allows her love for nursing to shine through with the outstanding and compassionate care she delivers everyday.

“Allison is fully present with her patients. She takes her time with them and builds a relationship with them,” says nurse manager Rebecca Sears. “She took care of a patient who had an anxiety panic attack. Allison took her time with her and stayed with her until her symptoms were gone. Allison had many others things to do but she gave this one patient her undivided attention at the time when she needed it the most.”

“I come to work everyday and I just try to do the best job that I can,” says Allison. “I like to take care of my patients, help my co-workers and contribute to our hospital. I believe if I have a good attitude and keep a fresh perspective, everything else will fall into place.”

Allison constantly works to better herself. She has the desire to learn and acquire the knowledge necessary to give patients top notch care.

“I know I want to go back to school one day and get my master’s degree,” affirms Allison. “From there, I can see myself becoming a

Certified Nurse Practitioner or perhaps going into administration or education.”

Whichever path Allison decides to pursue, she’ll undoubtedly do it with passion and dedication.
