Heat Stress: Three Special Considerations for Kids by Aaron Anthonsen, CPT It’s summer, the hectic end-of-year school activities are wrapped up, and everyone is off to camps, summer vacations, etc. We want to enjoy the sunshine and get outdoors. However, Mother Nature can make it a difficult balancing act. Georgia summer has arrived with a vengeance, with it’s temperatures in the 90’s and heat indexes in the triple digits. As parents we’re justifiably concerned about kids spending too much time in the heat. It’s a tough judgment call for us as parents – we want them to stay active, but we don’t want them to get overheated. At GYMGUYZ we deal with heat issues all through the summer as personal trainers. Since we’re fully mobile and do a lot of workouts outdoors, coaches spend several hours a day exercising with clients in some pretty hot conditions. Minimizing risk of heat stress injuries is a critical part of exercise safety this time of year, and it’s particularly important when working with children. Here are a few quick tips for protecting your kids from heat stress injuries this summer: • Kids are more susceptible to heat injuries: Children’s bodies have immature temperature regulation mechanisms, and the heat can quickly outpace their body’s ability to cool. For this reason it’s important to limit exposure by building in regular breaks and cool-down periods into activities. • Kids are less likely to recognize symptoms and self-treat. Adult supervision and education are critical here. Kids need to know (and be reminded) to drink water, and get out of the heat when they start feeling the early onset symptoms. • The best water is water. The electrolytes in sports drinks don’t make a big difference – certainly not enough to back up the marketing claims made by manufacturers that tell you that you need them. Always have water nearby. Always bring a water source, and ensure kids are drinking water regularly. For our outdoor fitness classes, GYMGUYZ vans are equipped with electric coolers and we track the amount of bottled water in the vans. Keeping a few bottles of water in your car or (even better) in a backpack where you can get to them quickly is a good habit. Learn the signs and symptoms, and know how to treat them. In general, treatment for dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are very similar. Most importantly, remember that heat stroke is life threatening and seek medical help immediately. Heat doesn’t have to mean staying inside. As long as you take the right steps for heat safety, you can get your kids out and moving without spending too much time worrying about the Georgia heat.

It is Colvin’s vision to give each child their own special angel for each month. Just like snowflakes, no two angels are alike. Each child can individualize the angel by coloring in their faces and hair and naming their own angel. The angel for each month shares its own special message. Children will not only learn the months of the year, but colors too, and what activity takes place in each month.

I’ve always had a passion for writing and enjoyed making up stories to share with my children when they were young. Some of the stories were about how my family was sponsored to come to America from Germany. My parents were displaced persons unable to return to their homeland, after having worked in labor camps in Germany, where my sister and I were both born. Coming to America gave us the opportunity to have a better life. We all became naturalized citizens in 1957. Unfortunately, I lost two husbands to cancer, but I was blessed with two loving children, six wonderful stepchildren, and twenty-two grandchildren. I want my stories to inspire children to participate in community service and to be proud of their country. Not only do I write books that send a message, they also serve a purpose. A percentage of proceeds from my books are donated to non-profit groups to help others. With God’s help, I’m grateful to have the opportunity to accomplish my dreams.
