involved in the theatre but now my health wasn’t allowing me to engage in the ways that I was used to and wanted to. Then I thought, ‘what about writing for theatre?’”

In the zone

Alongside his hopeful ideas to write, Jay also shared about some of the challenges in even getting started. “I never thought I could do this; the last time I really engaged in creative writing was in high school. I used to love creative writing when I was younger, until I became a perfectionist. I was afraid of the critical aspects of creative writing until I finally started to share.

Now I see how helpful, constructive, and encouraging other folks are about the creative process.” Quietly, he says: “When I am struggling, I am braver.”

The pandemic and Jay’s personal health issues were also the impetus for his first foray into playwriting. In 2020, one scene of Jay’s play, What’s eating you? was performed as a stage reading at the Island Fringe Festival’s Pounding the Pavement: Celebrating and Amplifying Artists from the Fringe. He went on to further develop the play in 2021 with dramaturgy support from Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre (PARC) and did another staged reading at Fresh from the Island: A New Works Festival at Kings Playhouse.

“I am passionate about creativity and ways it has awakened parts of me.”

For more than 15 years, Jay Gallant has been sharing parts of his story to help create safer and braver spaces across PEI for gender diverse folks. He works with organizations like PEERS Alliance and the Human Rights Commission to bring education and awareness of gender diversity to Islanders.

As a trans man who came out later in life, Jay is called to share his gifts so that other queer Islanders can be inspired to be authentically themselves. Though we were speaking on the phone, I could hear the love and liberation in his voice when he said, “it’s ok to be yourself.”

“There were no supports when I was younger so I have a responsibility now to do what I can to support the queer community.” The ever-optimist, Jay acknowledges that there has been some hopeful change in the past several years and he notes that we all still have more to learn and apply as it relates to gender diversity within our communities.

Jay and I go way back to the early 2000s when we were both Philosophy

students at UPEI. We shared stories about how the pandemic has given us both time, space, and just enough courage to create and share our artist-selves. Throughout the pandemic, Jay has stepped far outside his comfort zone by engaging in a variety of creative classes and workshops: spoken-word, sketch comedy, improv, and now an online clowning course.

“The clowning instructor has said that we will be pushed far outside our comfort zones and then we’ll be pushed some more.” Jay’s courage radiates through his actions, and he perpetually lives outside his comfort zone, uncomfortably in the growth zone. “Every class I do brings on a little bit more anxiety than the one before it, but I’ve also learned that the more the anxiety, the greater the reward.”

Jay started dabbling in these creative outlets during the pandemic to support himself through both the pandemic and personal health issues.

“I was having lots of health issues and feeling down about my physical limitations. I used to love acting and being

Jay brings humour and playfulness to some heavy and challenging topics as he addresses the pain and struggles for gender diverse folks reclaiming their sense of self-worth and power. Through relationships and forgiveness, Jay’s play is an extension of himself, inviting others to live authentically and compassionately.

“We all have a story to tell and for me, telling parts of my story in theatre is a natural addition to my advocacy.”

“There is so much power in sharing your queerness,” he says. I was reminded of the words of the late bell hooks as Jay was talking: “queer not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but queer as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

“Art shows us what it means to be human, and we’ve all been shown the importance of both those things [art and being human] throughout the pandemic.”

New Anne cast Anne of Green Gables—The Musical™ back on the Mainstage Confederation Centre of the Arts recently announced the latest actor taking on the legacy of PEI’s iconic redhead in Anne of Green Gables–The Musical™, one of two mainstage shows at this summer’s Charlottetown Festival.

The titular role will be played

by Kelsey Verzotti, a Calgaryborn, Toronto-based performer. She has entertained audiences across the country in productions at the Shaw Festival, Young People’s Theatre, The Musical Stage Company, Theatre Calgary, and more. Verzotti was also one of the top 10 contestants on the CBC reality talent competition Over the Rainbow (2012).

“The opportunity to play Anne means so much to me,” says Verzotti. “She is a character who lives so presently in the moment while challenging her environment and the people around her, and she always speaks her truth.”

Verzotti is no stranger to the story of Anne Shirley, having previously played the character’s best friend and kindred spirit Diana Barry in a 2019 production at Thousand Islands Playhouse in Ontario. The 2022 Charlottetown Festival will have the role of Diana performed by Emma Rudy, who returns after playing the titular character in the Festival’s 2019 production as well as the 2020 broadcast special Feelin’ Mighty Proud!

Watermark Theatre will present the Kitbag Theatre production of The Princess and the Handmaiden from March 10–12 as part of the Watermark Children’s Theatre Festival. The production, written and composed

Mean Girls meets Brothers Grimm in this fantastically clever family musical about loyalty, friendship, magic potions, and finding yourself. Whose grass is greener—the good-hearted, pampered princess, or her jealous, hard-working handmaiden? The tale follows two young women on a journey to a distant kingdom to cure an ailing king. Once best friends, the princess and the handmaiden find themselves driven apart by jealousy and a lack of understanding for each other’s circumstances. The handmaiden tricks the princess and takes her place in the new kingdom. The princess, meanwhile, has to fight to prove who she is.

Leslie Arden is a composer, lyricist and librettist who has written and composed over a dozen musicals, including The House of Martin Guerre,

and The Happy Prince. Arden composed the music for Canadian Stage Company’s productions of The Beard of Avon and It’s a Wonderful Life, in which she also performed. She has been commissioned by choirs all across Canada, and she spent five seasons as a composer with The Stratford Festival.

Melissa MacKenzie’s recent credits include Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley (Theatre New Brunswick); Dear Rita (Charlottetown Festival); Johnny & June, Tuesdays & Sundays, good girl (Kitbag Theatre); and Signed Sealed Delivered (Harmony House).

The Guild March Break Camp

Life As We Make It Exhibition from Life Drawing PEI at Hilda Woolnough Gallery Life As We Make It, an exhibition of nude figure studies from Life Drawing PEI live studio sessions, will be on display this month at the Hilda Woolnough Gallery @ The Guild from March 9–25.

Life Drawing PEI is a nonprofit group in its seventh year of hosting weekly sessions at the Gertrude Cotton Centre in Stratford. The group meets every Sunday afternoon from 2–4 pm to draw from a nude model, starting with quick gesture drawings, gradually increasing the time and ending the session with a longer pose for a more finished drawing. Island Entertainment Expo The second Island Entertainment Expo (IEX22) will take place at the Prince Edward Island Convention Centre in Charlottetown from March 26–27.

The event will focus on several key areas including gaming, music, movies, television, and literature. Just like a regular fan convention, fans can expect an array of displays, merchandise, events, activities, panels, talks, workshops and special guests.

Year-round theatre Watermark to produce and present in every season Watermark Theatre in North Rustico is embarking on a new initiative to produce and present theatre in every season of the year.

The Theatre will present the first annual Watermark Children’s Theatre Festival this spring; the plays Educating Rita and The Drawer Boy in the summer; the play Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story this fall; and a remount of their 2021 production of A Christmas Carol next winter.

The Watermark Music Series will continue on Sundays during the summer and occasionally throughout the year.

Three productions will be featured in the Children’s Theatre Festival: The Princess and the Handmaiden by Leslie Arden, produced by Kitbag Theatre (PEI), will be performed March 10–12; Seeds of Change by Lojo Simon, produced by Neptune Theatre (Halifax), will be presented free online from March 24–26; and The Paper Bag Princess by Alissa Watson, adapted from the classic children’s book by Robert Munsch and produced by Geordie Theatre (Montreal), will be performed April 16–18.

Educating Rita by Willy Russell, a warm, funny and intelligent play about relationships, connections, and freedom, will be performed from July 12–30. The play follows Rita, a married hairstylist who decides to go back to school to broaden her horizons. She enrolls in university and finds herself assigned to Frank, a jaded professor courting alcohol to navigate life and divorce.

Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story by Beau Dixon will be performed from September 28–October 8. The play chronicles the life of Maurice Ruddick, an African Canadian who survived the historic mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia in 1958.

Created and performed by Beau Dixon, the one-man show recalls the events of seven miners trapped one mile beneath a small mining town, the effect it had on their rural Canadian community, and the racial tension that surfaced as a result.

The 2021 production of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, adapted by Danielle Pearson will be performed from December 14–18.

The Watermark Music Series, curated once again by Rob Oakie, will return on July 24, August 14 and August 28, with Island musical artists interpreting the songs of classic composers.

This exhibition is accompanied by the book Many Lives Mark This Place.

Each author has contributed a short piece of writing describing how a specific place has influenced their life and work. Esteemed senior curator, Ian M. Thom, has written the introduction and John Hartman’s own musings on the engagement with each author is included. The book is available for sale at the Gallery reception desk.

Acrobatic duo’s dance and circus production—Mar 19 Contemporary circus performers Nikki Rummer and JD Broussé will present the dance and circus production Knot at Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside on March 19.

Using hand-to-hand techniques alongside dance, the acrobatic duo created a humourous, poignant and death-defying show that tells a tale of complex modern relationships.

Nikki and JD are in a relationship. They have had relationships with other people before, but this one is special to them.

Using a combination of dance and contemporary circus, Nikki and JD explore their relationship, laying it bare for the audience, who may not be expecting the twist in the tale—JD is gay and Nikki is straight and single.

“We wanted the reality of our partnership to be the centre of the performance,” explains performer and co-creator Nikki Rummer. “I trust JD not to drop me, and he trusts me not to kick him in the head. But underneath

Confed Centre reopens A return to live performances and art exhibitions Confederation Centre of the Arts is open to the public again and resuming its regular hours of operation.

LIVE @ the Centre is back with several performances planned over the next few months.

The Debaters Live on Tour comes to Charlottetown on March 10. The live event features CBC host Steve Patterson and two of his favourite comics, Kate Davis and Dave Hemstad, performing stand-up and two hilarious debates in a format familiar to fans of the popular radio show.

Kicking off next month’s performances is the jaw-dropping show Bromance, an acrobatic circus spectacle that fuses gymnastics, parkour, breaking, and contemporary dance.

Scheduled for April 2, the performance is a tour-de-force of cutting-edge physical heroics that wittily explores male companionship and its limits.

Art Lotto do-over Andrew Cairns piece is now the selection for March Islanders have the opportunity to win a specially curated piece through an exclusive art lottery. Art Lotto is a fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Confederation Centre to support arts education programs at the Centre and Island artists.

Each month, a unique piece from an Island artist is raffled off via a limited number tickets. The artists and pieces are revealed on the first of the month.

Selected by Kevin Rice, director of the Confederation Centre Art Gallery, the pieces come from artists of varying backgrounds and mediums. The Centre purchases the pieces from the artists at regular retail price and each piece will be on display inside the Centre’s Richmond Street entrance.

Originally scheduled for February’s lottery, the March piece is Thistle (1/7)

by Andrew Cairns, a painter and writer based in Montague, PEI. Cairns creates patterned, figure-ground relationships that produce a strong optical effect while maintaining the object quality of each piece; aiming for what he calls a stable, rather than abrasive, relationship between contrasting colours.

TOAF call for artists

The Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (TOAF) is seeking submissions for 2022. TOAF is Canada’s longest-running contemporary outdoor art fair and will take place in July. Artists can choose how they want to participate: three days at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto plus 10-day online fair at toaf.ca; or 10-day online fair from anywhere in Canada and beyond.

Exhibitions at Eptek New and permanent ones on view in March Eptek Art & Culture Centre in Summerside will have several exhibitions on view in March, including two in partnership with this town is small.

A group exhibition, Collective Intricacies, curated by Tamara Steele, will be on view beginning March 25.

Steele is a musician, former gallery administrator, and the Director of the Black Cultural Society of PEI. More details to be announced.

Earlier in the month, the juried group exhibition, Grounded: Seeking Connections, will be on display.

Grounded is an exploration of artistic attempts to connect to place, the natural world, and the artist’s role within it. It features work from William Baker, Doug Dumais, Maggie J. Whitten Henry, Monica Lacey, Sarah Saunders, LiliAnne Webster, Jane Whitten, and Damien Worth. The selected artworks are in a range of mediums, including photography, sculpture, textile, video,

painting, and mixed media.

Both exhibitions are presented in partnership with this town is small, and supported by Innovation PEI, through the Culture Action Plan. this town is small is PEI’s artist-run centre, established in 2010. this town is small fosters sustainability for contemporary arts practice on PEI through providing creation, presentation, and development opportunities, often with multiple community partners and while promoting a public understanding of contemporary art.

In the lobby exhibition space, Small Wonders, is on display. For this group show, members of the Summerside Art Club painted smaller-scaled artwork.

Visit the permanent exhibition on the history and architecture of Summerside while at Eptek Centre, and their gift shop features a variety of Island art and craft, as well as books on local themes.

Eptek Art & Culture Centre is a site of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation and is located at 130 Heather Moyse Drive on the Summerside waterfront, adjacent to the Harbourfront Theatre. Art exhibition opens on Transgender Day of Visibility—Mar 31

Gender Reveal Party

Two queer non-binary Island artists have created and curated a deeply emotional and educational art exhibition which will be shared with Islanders as part of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31.

Gender Reveal Party: A (he)art exhibition by Rory Starkman and Julie Bull will be on display at Kings Playhouse in Georgetown from March 31 to April 27, with an opening event and artist talk on March 30 at 7 pm.

This production from the Creative Cauldron Collective is a mixed media art exhibition about gender identity, gender expression, and two individuals’ healing journeys toward breaking binaries, spiritual growth, and healing.

The current social, political, and cultural context of PEI (read: homophobic and transphobic bullying in schools) reveals that many people know very little about gender identity, expression, or sexual orientation. Organizations, schools, and community members want to know more, but they don’t know where to turn or even what questions to ask.

“There’s so much great work happening on the Island to spread awareness and education around 2SLGBTQ+ issues, but people still feel very afraid to get something ‘wrong’ when it comes to identity,” says Starkman.

“This show is really an opportunity to showcase my own personal healing journey and the nuances of being non-binary for this year’s Trans Day of Visibility. The pain, the joy, the loss, and the celebration.”

Starkman and Bull’s background in and passion for education and advocacy are evident in this exhibition that

will provide an opportunity to learn about gender and sexual diversity in a more accessible way. Their vision is an art exhibition that will provide personal experiences, educational components, and artistic representations of gender and healing, framed in the ridiculousness of a gender reveal party.

“As a recovering academic turned entrepreneur turned artist who could never ‘pick a team,’ I am no stranger to the in-between spaces,” says Bull.

“The creation and dissemination of this art is far outside my comfort zone and I encourage others to join me here, toward our growth zones.”

The art is thought-provoking and heart-centred. Starkman and Bull invite Islanders to immerse themselves in the gallery and to think critically and feel compassionately about the various gender and sexuality diversity within our communities.

The Riverworks group exhibition will now be on display from March 31 to April 4 at the Beaconsfield Carriage House in Charlottetown.

The River Clyde Pageant and Creative PEI collaborated to launch Riverworks last summer, engaging three artists—Kirstie McCallum, Doug Dumais and Alexis Bulman—in the creation of outdoor, public artworks that were installed and performed at three living shoreline sites.

Kirstie McCallum constructed Pollinator Clock at Tea Hill. At the QEH shoreline, Doug Dumais performed Shoreline Palimpsest. Alexis Bulman installed Lillian’s Place at the waterfront in Stratford.

Sixty Days of Fame Exhibition continues to March 31 The Sixty Days of Fame Exhibit, You Can’t Drink It by Bonita Lynn Nichols, contines until March 31 at the Lefurgey Cultural Centre in Summerside.

Nichols gets her inspiration from listening to peoples stories—an intriguing story paints a picture in her head that she then transforms onto canvas. She creates the paintings using cofffee as a medium. Coffee painting is a centuries old form of creative art and it is once again gaining in popularity with painters who seek out natural pigments to obtain different textures and colours.

Mastershot Film4Ward Interview series sheds light on PEI film scene

2022 slate of PEI short films Film4Ward is an incubator program on PEI that aims to support the province’s film and television sector through training opportunities and production funding. Every year, four short film projects each receive production funding of up to $20,000 and in-kind facilities and services, along with industry training for emerging filmmakers.

FilmPEI announced the following four short films, chosen from 13 applicants, that will be supported by this year’s Film4Ward stream: Finale, a backstage theatre comedy produced

by Luc Trottier and directed by Jacob Puiras; Spud Island, a potato industry documentary produced by Brian Pollard and directed by Norman Ho; Ramblings of a Middle-Aged Drag Queen, a dramedy about secrets and lies produced by Goldy Ginalynn Locks and directed by Aharon Jinjihashvili; and Sea Salt, a fishing village thriller produced by Shane Pendergast and directed by Logan Fulford.

Ten short films have been produced so far since the Film4Ward program started in 2018. Including the four short films set to be produced during

this year’s stream, about $300,000 will have been spent toward PEI’s film industry, as well as about $100,000 toward filmmaker training.

“Every year the outcomes are a true representation of the brimming talent PEI has to offer,” says Omar Broderick, FilmPEI’s interim executive director.

“This year, each team has chosen different genres and unique stories to reach their audience. With the chosen teams we have a mix of talent and new perspectives. We are super excited for this year’s projects and I would like to sincerely congratulate all our winning teams.”

One program addition this year is the hiring of Brian Sharp as Film4Ward’s executive producer. He will help oversee the production of all four films. The films are slated to commence production by late 2022. filmpei.com

Learn stop motion Cine-Club Franco animation FilmPEI is offering an introductory two-day Stop Motion Animation Workshop on March 12 and 13.

Participants will learn how to make their own stop motion animation from scratch—from puppet building and set design, to shooting and animating.

Le Carrefour de l’Isle-Saint-Jean and Classics at City Cinema have partnered to create Ciné-Club Franco, a series of cultural French language films that will be screened at the beginning of each month until June. The selected films will show with English subtiles.

The goal of the partnership is not only to provide an avenue for the Francophone community to enjoy a weekend activity in French but also to share in the culture with their English speaking friends and families.

For example, there are several families within the community that have children attending French school, yet only one parent speaks the language.

As it is often easier to speak English in the home, organizers wanted to create another place outside of the local Francophone community centre to find French language programming for the family.

Ciné-Club Franco celebrates Canadian talent with the upcoming screening of the film C.R.A.Z.Y by the late Jean-Marc Vallée on March 20 at 4 pm. French Canadian films rival some of the best films from around the world and this is an opportunity to enjoy and be proud of Canada’s Francophone culture.

Riselli is a longtime advocate of Canada’s film and television industry with more than 35 years of experience. Riselli served as the Director of Film Programs and Reporting for Cultural Industries Ontario North (CION), which is dedicated to fostering and promoting the film and music industries in Northern Ontario, as well as providing educational programming to cultivate the advancement of the region’s emerging talent. Northern Ontario hosted the production of over 50 feature films and television series in the past three years. Prior to joining CION in 2017, Riselli was the Facilities Manager of DHX Media (Wildbrain) in Toronto, VP/GM Atlantic Operations for PS Production Services (Halifax), Operations Manager at Cinesite Film Studio (Halifax), and GM of PS Lightsource (Toronto).

Building on its 40-year history, FilmPEI strives to support and encourage filmmakers at all levels and provides the space, resources and infrastructure to inspire excellence in film, video and new media projects.

Submissions are now open for the 2022 edition of the annual PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp.

Featuring in-person workshops with industry experts from May 21 to 26 in Charlottetown, participants will receive professional mentoring to develop projects as either a feature film or series for the web or television.

Projects can be at any stage of development and writers should be prepared to put in the hard work that is required to get them off the ground.

Whether planning to write a first feature or to rewrite a feature film, tv or web series pilot script, the PEI Screenwriters’ Bootcamp will have a workshop to help participants reach their goal. The workshops are fully funded by different levels of government and private organizations so writers are actually competing for one of the highly coveted seats. Each workshop is limited to five participants so that each writer receives all the attention they require to move their projects forward during one of the immersive five-day workshops.

RED editors commiserate, “How do you do REDheads? Back a little stiff from all the shoveling?” They can not wait to roll in the grass, to kiss the crocuses, lounge with lilacs, dance a tango with the tulips, luxuriate with the lupins—they’re starting to feel some spring excitement in spite of being stuck under fourteen feet of snow. So, to help get through the winter homestretch the team at RED has assembled another volume of RED: The Island Storybook, number 28.

As usual, Island storytellers delivered, holding forth in fine form, filling up another sixty-four pages of RED and the editors are proud to present their stories. “We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we enjoyed putting them together. Pottersfield Press recently published fiction writer, playwright, and poet J. J. Steinfeld’s latest book, Acting on the Island and Other Prince Edward Island Stories: New & Selected. This is Steinfeld’s twenty-third book and fourteenth short story collection. It includes 21 stories set on the Island, gathered from the nearly 500 wide-ranging and eclectic stories that Steinfeld has written in his over forty years of living and writing on PEI. Acting on the Island is a thought-provoking collection of Island stories embracing and exploring the themes and the psychological terrain that has pervaded all of Steinfeld’s writing, from the absurd to the existential, the surreal to the spiritual, the realistic to the fantastical. Steinfeld is concerned in his work with the influence of the past and memory on the present; the significance of love, creativity, and madness in the lives of individuals as they attempt to deal with their lives on the Island and within the larger world.

In 2017, Guernica Editions published a book in their Essential Writers Series, J. J. Steinfeld: Essays on His Works, compiled and edited by Sandra Singer, which took a critical look at the author’s writings of fiction, poetry, and plays. Among Steinfeld’s many awards for his writing over the years, four of his works which include stories in Acting on the Island have won or been shortlisted for writing awards.

Over the past year, PEI Community Reads has been meeting online monthly to discuss The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power by Desmond Cole. On March 2 at 7 pm, PEI Community Reads in partnership with Bookmark in Charlottetown will host a virtual event with Cole.

Yolanda Hood from PEI Community Reads and Tamara Steele from the Black Cultural Society of PEI will moderate the free event.

In his 2015 cover story for Toronto Life magazine, Desmond Cole exposed the racist actions of the Toronto police force, detailing the dozens of times he had been stopped and interrogated under the controversial practice of carding. The story quickly came to national prominence, catapulting its author into the public sphere. Cole used his newfound profile to draw insistent, unyielding attention to the injustices faced by Black Canadians on a daily basis.

Both Cole’s activism and journalism find vibrant expression in his first book, The Skin We’re In. Puncturing the bubble of Canadian smugness and naive assumptions of a post-racial nation, Cole chronicles just one year— 2017—in the struggle against racism in this country. Month-by-month, Cole creates a comprehensive picture of entrenched, systemic inequality.

Winter Tales at Kings Playhouse The Winter Tales Storytelling Festival will take place March 11–14 at Kings Playhouse in Georgetown. The fourday event will feature stories, songs, performances, a film screening, family theatre and more.

On March 13 at 2 pm, Young at Heart Theatre will present Close to Home: Islander Stories featuring Island seniors and special guests Alan Buchanan and Patrick Ledwell.

Kitbag Theatre will present their production of The Princess and the Handmaiden on March 14. Directed by Melissa MacKenzie and starring Jacob Hemphill, Melissa MacKenzie and Rebecca Parent, the clever family musical is about loyalty, friendship, magic potions, and finding yourself.

Island Literary Awards submissions The PEI Writers’ Guild is accepting submissions for the 35th annual Island Literary Awards and the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty Creative Writing Awards for Young People until March 11 at 4 pm.

The Francophone Award and the 2SLGBTQ+ Award are new this year.

Both are designed to recognize literary merit and promote works in all categories including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, writing for children and young adults, plays and scriptwriting. Other categories for the Island Literary

Awards in the adult category include: Literature for Children; Poetry; Short Story; Creative NonFiction; Marie Coyoteblanc Award for Indigenous Writing; Newcomers to Canada Award; and the Scott Parsons Literary Award.

Students in the K–12 school system are invited to submit writing on any topic to the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty Creative Writing Awards for Young People.

Anti-Racism Microgrant

The province’s Anti-Racism Table is supporting community-led anti-racism work through the new Anti-Racism Microgrant funding initiative. The initiative is open to individuals, groups and organizations who can apply for one-time funding under one of three streams: Youth applicants ($100 to $1000); Individuals ($100 to $1500); Not-for-profit organizations and boards, community organizations and professional associations ($1000 to $3000). Projects must help to address racism in PEI by promoting racial equity and justice, creating safety for racialized communities and individuals, and building cohesion within racialized communities. PEI Winter Woodlot Tour

The ninth annual PEI Winter Woodlot Tour is a free event for the whole family.

Full-tuition award for Indigenous students

Indigenous students entering their first year of study in the two-year Culinary Arts program or the one-year Pastry Arts program at the Culinary Institute of Canada are now eligible to apply for a full-tuition award established by Chef Michael Smith and Chastity Smith, proprietors of The Inn at Bay Fortune. Internship program

Recent graduates can apply to a new internship program with the Dept of Economic Growth, Tourism and Culture.

The Internship Development Program is a one-year, full-time position for recent graduates who have completed a post-secondary program within 36 months prior to the internship commencing in May. The 2023 Canada Winter Games will get underway on PEI in just under one year. To mark the occasion, the 2023 Host Society launched its official online volunteer application portal and welcomed Karbon, a Canadian company, as the official volunteer uniform outfitter.

The official volunteer uniform design for the 2023 Games was also revealed.

Islanders are invited to apply to become a Games-time volunteer for the Atlantic Lottery Volunteer Program. The Host Society is looking for the enthusiasm, hospitality, and expertise of approximately 5000 volunteers in a variety of roles to help deliver a life-shaping Games experience for all participants. Over 500 bilingual volunteers will also be recruited to deliver a Games experience in both of Canada’s official languages. Volunteers will receive comprehensive training and orientation, experience in the sports and entertainment industry, a Karbon winter uniform and an accreditation badge.

Every volunteer who volunteers at least 32 hours of their time during the Games will receive a uniform kit consisting of a long-sleeve technical shirt, mid-layer full zip jacket, winter jacket and toque.

Bringing together 3600 athletes, managers and coaches, across 20 different sports, for the largest multi-sport event in the country with a forecasted economic impact of over $100 million, the 29th edition of the Canada Games will be the largest event hosted in PEI’s history. Friendly Calls program

The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Calls program helps Islanders who may be struggling with loneliness and isolation. The impact of loneliness can cause health issues ranging from high blood pressure to a reduced quality of life and cognitive decline. The program pairs a trained volunteer with an adult who may be feeling isolated from others because they are homebound, have limited social or family connections or would simply benefit from more social interaction.

The program offers regularly scheduled phone chats and will help connect clients with resources that are available to them in their communities. The provincial government has partnered with the Canadian Red Cross on this program which is free and available to any adult who is feeling a need for connection. The Cardigan Federal Green Party Association is hosting an online panel discussion, No Small Potatoes: The PEI Potato Wart Crisis and the Future of Farms on March 10 from 6–8 pm.

Biathlon volunteers

Nordic Sports PEI will be hosting the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Regional North American (NorthAm) Open and Canada Games Test Event from March 11–13 at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park, Nordic Site at Brookvale. Athletes are expected from across Atlantic Canada and the Northern United States. Biathlon combines cross-country skiing and shooting disciplines in a single competition. Official training for athletes starts on the afternoon of March 11 at the Biathlon venue at Brookvale. Races will begin at 9 am on both March 12 and 13 with events expected to be completed by noon on March 13. The event is a great opportunity for Nordic Sports PEI to gauge the readiness of the venue, officials and volunteer capacity for the upcoming 2023 Canada Winter Games. To host an event such as this and the upcoming Canada Games, as many as 100 volunteers and volunteer officials are typically needed over the course of the competitions. The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women’s International Women’s Day organizing committee will bring advocacy and celebration online in 2022 with a special podcast series. Four pairs of exceptional women and gender diverse people will share their experiences and perspectives of “breaking the bias” in PEI. Each podcast will feature a conversation between two members of the community who—through their actions, analysis, lived experiences and intersecting identities—inspire us.

Some of the topics for discussion will include trans experiences, Black Island history, perspectives on Indigeneity and reconciliation, women as caregivers, art, activism, and justice for survivors.

Animal welfare The Sir James Dunn Animal Welfare Centre at the Atlantic Veterinary College will host its 2022 Webinar Series in March, focusing on animal welfare issues within dog breeding.

The first webinar on March 15 will feature Dr. Brenda Bonnett, a veterinary science officer with the International Partnership for Dogs, who will explore international challenges for dog breeding and discuss how veterinarians can navigate the complexities of health, welfare, and owner attachment.

On March 22, Dr. Candace Croney, director for the Center of Animal Welfare Science at Purdue University, will discuss ways to scientifically evaluate canine welfare in commercial breeding kennels and will answer the

Radiant Rural Halls

Radiant Rural Halls is a series of free public art events, including installations, workshops, screenings, and performances, held on weekends running to April in rural PEI community halls.

The series is organized by this town is small, PEI’s artist-run centre, and will see 12 artists and six filmmakers from PEI and the Maritimes present their work at eight rural community halls across the province.

Following an open call for submissions, a steering committee comprised of rural artists, arts workers, and community members selected the programming for this first edition of Radiant Rural Halls. this town is small sought proposals that aimed to illuminate aspects of Island life, connect with rural artists and communities, and engage with the unique features and facilities of rural community halls.

The works selected present an exciting range of art styles, subject matter, and opportunities for participation.

Featured artists Rémi Belliveau and Jason Leblanc commented, “Being from the rural community of Memramcook, NB, and having spent time in halls such as Golden Age Clubs and church basements, we both see the value in bringing contemporary art —something that is so rarely on offer where we’re from—to places of social convergence where people separated by long driveways and kilometres of field and woodland can come together to strengthen communal ties.’’

Radiant Rural Halls will be further shared through an exhibition catalogue to be published later this spring. The catalogue will include photographic documentation of the artworks and events, and two texts that reflect on the artistic presentations and engage with the unique history and culture of PEI’s rural community halls.

Established in 2010, this town is small is a mobile non-profit organization that has developed diverse and supportive partnerships to provide opportunities for artists and make connections with the public.

L’Empremier jam, février 1969: an installation by Rémi Belliveau & Jason LeBlanc will be on view throughout the month of March; venue and viewing schedule to be announced.

The work is a sound sculpture and portable installation that highlights the [ongoing] writing process of the [fictitious] Acadian prog-rock group L’Empremier. Imagined by Rémi Belliveau (alias Jean Dularge) and “Mononcle” Jason LeBlanc (alias Miller White), the project draws attention to the political music written by the duo during the winter of 1969, having it loop on a vintage cassette radio for listeners to take-in. Overheard on these tapes is not only melodies and lyrics in the process of gestation, but also discussions of a musical and intimate nature between historic musicians meeting up in person for the first time.

The Woodsman Throughout March

The Woodsman: performance by Becka Viau is taking place throughout the month of March at the Breadalbane Community Hall.

Viau will be outdoors at the Hall chopping a cord of wood. Visitors are invited to offer a trade to the artist in exchange for lumber: “The labour of self-reliance becomes a site of interdependence through the act of processing firewood for trade with the community.”

Shipwright March 5 & 6 Shipwright: performance and installation

by Patrick Jeffrey and Vernon Corney will be on view from 2–8 pm, with performances from 5–7 pm at the Riverview Community Centre in Clyde River.

Shipwright is a storytelling exhibit that combines sculpture and performance to evoke PEI’s shipbuilding past. Have a

cup of tea and witness a PEI shipyard straight from the 19th century, complete with a fleet of ships built by local craftsman Vernon Corney in their first public display. Each day, the space is occupied by a pair of shipwrights played by Patrick Jeffrey and Jacob Hemphill. They work and sing, sleep and eat, play banjo and do their chores in a performance directed by Benton Hartley. Feel the sense memory of PEI’s age of sail.

The Water Lover March 18 The Water Lover: audio-visual performance by Patrick Allaby will take place at the Bonshaw Community Hall on March 18 at 6 pm.

The performance delves into the artists’ experience of being diagnosed and living with type 1 diabetes. Through storytelling, humour, and a hand-drawn comic strip slideshow, the performance explores navigating a precarious healthcare system and getting by with chronic illness.

Breadalbane Community Hall March 20

Fabric Stories: conversations with artist Donnalee Downe will take place from 1–4 pm on March 6 at the Farmers’ Bank of Rustico, March 13 at the Milton Community Hall, and March 20 at the Breadalbane Community Hall.

Downe’s current work explores how personal narratives and private histories emerge when speaking about the fabrics we remember. Her project involves informal one-on-one and small group gatherings where she will share her current work and exchange “Fabric Stories” with rural Islanders. Downe’s fabric narratives involve apron and tea towel collections, her son’s baby clothes, a quilt made from threadbare pyjamas, and renderings of textile patterns based on sketches provided by members of her family. She is interested to see what stories Islanders have related to fabrics they have held on to or remember from their childhoods.

The project’s research will inform new works representing a complete index of the artist’s memory of lost fabrics (1964 to present). To book a time to meet with the artist, email donnaleedowne@gmail.com.

The Community Foundation of PEI recently announced the Doug Dennis Outstanding Public Service Award.

The Award will provide annual recognition to an individual or group that works for the provincial government and has made an outstanding contribution to the residents and Government of PEI. The Award is being established

by Doug’s son Alan and grandson Alec to pay tribute to Doug’s legacy of excellence in public service. The recognition will include a $1000 contribution to the charity (or charities) of the winner’s choice.

Doug Dennis (1930–2019) was a PEI civil servant from 1959 to 1986.

He served as Deputy Minister to six Ministers under five Premiers. Most of his service was as Deputy Minister of Finance, but it also included periods as Secretary to Treasury Board, Deputy Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Deputy Minister of Tourism, and Comptroller of the Hospital Services Commission.

“Doug Dennis exemplified the four key attributes of a committed and

responsive public service—demonstrating respect, integrity, excellence and accountability; helping to lift the people around you; working to make the organization a better place; and improving the lives of Islanders. By honouring Doug’s legacy in this way, his family has created an opportunity for outstanding public service to receive the recognition it deserves and for Island charities and the Islanders they serve to also benefit. Raine Hamilton

Folk singer-songwriter and chamber violinist Raine Hamilton will be on stage March 31 at Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside. Recipient of the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year, Hamilton is part prairie songstress, part story weaver; each song has a story, delivered between songs with humour and grace.

A classical violinist and musicologist by training, Hamilton and her string trio offer string-quartet-like arrangements of her original songs.

They call this chamber-folk, a hybrid of the classical tradition of string quartet

chamber music, with the singer-songwriter folk that comes so organically to Hamilton. She invites her love of the violin into the singer-songwriter genre, writing for violin and voice and for guitar and voice.

Hamilton believes that music is for everyone and that we all have something to share. Most chosen Bob Jensen was popular in Norfolk, England in 2021 PEI-based singer-songwriter and spoken word poet Bob Jensen recently learned that he was the most chosen artist of last year at a radio station in Norfolk, UK. He had two albums in play in 2021, a collection of cover songs, For the Sake of the Song, and a Christmas recording with Tony McManus, The Silver Wren.

“Apparently I was the most played artist at West Norfolk Radio in Norfolk, England in 2021,” shares Jensen. “When I made these recordings, I was not expecting this kind of attention from radio.

Musically, the program will explore themes of change, and listeners can expect to hear some David Bowie alongside classical repertoire such as Ralph Vaughn Williams’ well-known masterpiece “The Lark Ascending.”

Darius Milhaud’s “Le Printemps,” an early piece that references Romantic tendencies from the French modernist,

will balance out “Spring” by Joe Hisaishi, one of Japan’s most notable living film composers. Eclectic as always, the String Machine will also offer interpretations of English prog rock, Canadian folk music, and a selection from Eastern Europe’s “funkiest orchestra.” Capping off the program will be the world premiere of a new composition by violinist Karen Graves.

A robin in the hawthorn

I’ve had several conversations recently with people who were surprised to see American robins hanging around this winter. These birds are usually thought of as harbingers of spring, and often they are just that. I remember seeing early migrations of robins flying into the Wood Islands area in late April.

Driving from there to Charlottetown, I would see hundreds of robins lined up along the highway. The snow had started to migrate away from the road, and the edges of the fields were beginning to open up. That was always a sure sign of spring.

But we also see robins throughout the winter—sometimes one or two, but occasionally in huge numbers. It generally depends on food sources.

As I am typing this column, there is a beautiful robin sitting in our hawthorn bush in Tea Hill, feasting on the last of the fruit.

Robins are one of our most easily recognizable birds. A dark back and an orange-red breast—that’s all you really need to know to identify them.

The males have a darker head than the females and a much more colourful breast—a deeper, richer orange.

Juveniles are a bit different, as their light orange breast is mottled with brown spots.

They are also very sociable birds, never afraid to nest in the wreath on your door, or on a disused vehicle or piece of farm equipment. Their nests are quite distinct—a roughly thrown together consolidation of grasses and twigs, with a clay liner that gives it strength. Robins are one of the birds that will lay clutches of eggs throughout the spring and summer. This is a useful survival strategy as their nests often get predated by other birds, such as blue jays and owls, and red squirrels. Blue eggshells on the ground during the late spring and summer often are evidence of predation.

These songbirds are closely related,

and look somewhat similar, to our other common thrushes—Swainson’s thrush and hermit thrush.

Robins probably appreciate the milder winters we’ve been having, but I remember several Christmas bird counts—either late December or early January—with lots of snow cover and flocks of three to five hundred birds.

Those were very magical outings— with not just robins, but also Bohemian waxwings, pine grosbeaks, hairy woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers and black-capped chickadees madly eating together.

The common thread to these sightings was food. In the bird count, we cover an area around Georgetown that for some reason usually has huge amounts of winter food for these birds. Hawthorn, mountain ash, winterberry holly, wild rose, black chokeberry, highbush cranberry, apples and crabapples can be found in large numbers throughout this area, and it must be a smorgasbord for all kinds of fruit-eating birds. Heavy fruiting does not occur every year, but if there are enough of these sources of food around, you’ll generally have sufficient fruit to keep the robins happy.

If you want to “fruitify” your yard by planting any or all of the above varieties, you’ll increase the number of birds that stay in your area over the winter months. More fruit means that you’ll either get more birds coming to feed, or the birds will stay there longer.

Often we see large numbers of robins here that have migrated from more northerly climes, usually when the food sources in those areas have been picked clean.

Whether late migrants from the north or ones that stayed here due to the large amounts of available food, robins are always a welcome sight. They make it seem as though spring is right around the corner.

Acadian singer and songwriter Jenna-Marie Gallant from Rustico, PEI released her second single, “Innocent Man,” on February 16.

Based on a tragedy that happens all too often in an imperfect judicial system, causing lifelong pain for victims and their families, “Innocent Man” was inspired by stories of injustice. Gallant recalls the story of a man who not only served 10 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, but how the nightmare didn’t end upon his release.

“Innocent Man” was recorded at the Don’t Wake Baby Studio in Charlottetown with engineer/mixer/ producer and member of the super group Tokyo Police Club, Greg Alsop, along with Jesse Périard from Ten Strings and A Goat Skin.

Gallant, who is nominated for the 2022 Music PEI New Artist of the Year Award, has the gift to captivate and enthrall her audiences with her driving acoustic-folk style of songwriting.

Her lyrics grab listeners, as does her compassion for the disenfranchised.

She is an observer and documenter of our times.

PEI-based songwriter Nikkie Gallant and NB indie-folkster Kylie Fox share “Girls’ Room.” The song is a product of the Canadian Song Challenge, in which the two artists were matched with each other and producer Dan Ledwell (Jenn Grant, Good Lovelies, The Once) to write, record, and produce two new tracks in as many weeks. The danceable single relaying lust, nightlife, and bisexuality was released on Valentine’s Day. “This song is drastically out of character for both of us to release,” said Fox and Gallant, “The result is an energetic pop-track, voiced by two women with a romantic history who attend a club with their prospective male partners, only to meet each other on the dance floor and pick up where things left off in the restroom.”

“With bathrooms everywhere breaking the gender binary, we do want to reaffirm that all genders are valid, and gender-free restrooms are the ideal,” explain Fox and Gallant.

Cloggeroo’s Vibrations and Libations Winter & Spring series is ramping up the music scene in Three Rivers, PEI with ten events scheduled between March and May. The new project profiles Island musicians and Cloggeroo’s ongoing partnership with PEI’s craft breweries. Building on the very successful Cloggeroo Craft Brew Picnic that was part of the 2021 Cloggeroo Island Folk Festival, Vibrations and Libations shows will feature products from Bogside, Copper Bottom, Upstreet, Red Island Cider, Double Hill Cidery, and Moth Lane.

The events will be held in local brewery pubs Bogside and Copper Bottom, with some performances at Kings Playhouse. Afternoon shows will be free to the public.

Vibrations and Libations will open March 5 with an afternoon show featuring Steve Somers at Copper Bottom in Montague. Steve is the recent recipient of the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation’s Wendell Boyle Performance Award. He will be accompanied by Kevin Ryan on guitar and Rhéo J. Rochon on upright bass.

The series continues at Copper Bottom Brewing with: Teresa Doyle with Patrick Bunston and Katlin Doyle on March 12 at 3 pm; Noah Malcolm on March 19 at 8 pm; and Joce Reyome on March 26 at 3 pm.

Bogside Brewing’s lineup includes

During the recent COVID–19 shutdown limiting personal contact to two friends, we chose our neighbours Floyd and Pauline Thomson. Day or night their door is always open. I can’t count the number of fresh biscuits and cups of tea I’ve enjoyed at their kitchen table. Floyd makes birdhouses in his workshop and I’m always welcome to use his drill press or table saw. You can’t buy friends like that!

Floyd holds the honour of being the oldest resident of the Cove. At 87 he has taken up a new hobby and recently commenced painting his very first work of art Horse in a Stall. He wanted a few pointers, so while I was there I asked about his life. “You’re an Islander, aren’t you, Floyd. I mean, you were born here.”

Floyd: “That’s what they tell me. I was born up West in Campbellton. I think my aunt Vera Shaw was the midwife but I don’t remember the details.”

“Campbellton’s just a dot on the map these days.”

Floyd: “It was a big place back then!

Two grocery stores, United Church, one-room school, about thirty houses, a fish plant, blacksmith shop—I spent a lot of time in there, I was as black as the blacksmith—and Bradshaw’s sawmill was a going concern. Before my time they built ships down at the shore, hundreds of men worked at that. And there was a lobster factory.

“Dad was a carpenter at the Point Pleasant airstrip. WWII came along and he signed up. After the war we bought a farm in Hampton and started farming, kept a few racehorses, pigs, chickens, some Guernsey cows. Sold our cream to the Crapaud Dairy.

“I wanted to see the world so I moved to Ontario and worked in my uncle’s

garage. I loved convertibles… had a green ’53 Ford Fairlane, ’59 blue Olds.

One thing led to another, I got married and had a daughter. Then I came back to the Island and settled down, or tried to. It didn’t all work out. I had openheart surgery, lost sight in one eye, you know, one thing and another.

“I met my wife Pauline at a dance for the Separated Widowed and Divorced crowd. Things clicked right away so we decided to buy a house. We’d had our eye on this place but didn’t know if we could handle the muddy road in spring. I guess we could. That was 1986 and we’ve been here ever since.”

“What’s the biggest change in your lifetime?”

Floyd: “My body! Well, I can’t say computers because I haven’t got one.

I guess we carry on pretty much like always, eat the same things, biscuits, fish…”

Pauline: “Floyd cooks all the fish!”

Floyd: “… homemade bread, ham and scalloped potatoes…”

The PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation has awarded its Wendell Boyle Performance Award for 2022 to Steve Somers for his recent album Songs about Saint George’s. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in a performance medium, including music or theatre, that highlight or interpret the culture and history of PEI. Steve was born and raised in St. George’s, a small community in the Town of Three Rivers. As a musician, he was inspired to merge his love of music with his love of PEI, and especially St. George’s.

Songs about St. George’s builds on the many stories Steve listened to while working in the woods with his dad, visiting the local bootlegger, or just spending time with family and friends. With a flair for storytelling, and a good deal of homesickness for PEI, Steve applied his songwriting skills to the stories and created the award winning album.

Now based in Vancouver, BC, Steve will be on the Island to accept the award and will be performing songs from the alblum at Copper Bottom in Montague on March 5, from 3–5 pm for the opening event of Cloggeroo’s Vibrations and Libations series.

I comment, “You’re doing okay.”

Floyd: “I’d say so, yes.” He frowns and looks critically at his half-finished painting. “If I can just make this horse look like a horse. Do you think his eye’s in the right place?”

“Well, you might move it up a bit.”

Floyd puts down his brush. “That’s enough for today. Let’s have another cup of tea.”

Inn Echo and Cassie & Maggie will present A Wild Mountain Time, an evening of fiddle music and songs at The Pourhouse in Charlottetown on March 29 at 7:30 pm.

Nova Scotia sisters Cassie and Maggie are putting their own 21st century stamp on the Celtic soundtrack of this nation. Alternating between Gaelic and English, traditional and contemporary, haunting and electrifying, the duo’s talent is surpassed only by the sheer joy they exude in performance.

Inn Echo is a PEI-based band who has been performing for audiences locally and abroad since their debut in 2018. Innovative, creatively-crafted, and what Roots Music Canada coins as “a powerful sound,” the soundscape laid down by this instrumental group is dynamic and distinctive.

A Wild Mountain Time will be the first live gathering of these two groups on Canadian soil. Music PEI Week 2022 Awards Party goes virtual Music PEI Week will celebrate PEI’s music community from March 2–6.

Combining in-person concerts and an online awards presentation, the week will feature Island talent at six showcases and Music PEI will shine a spotlight on artists and industry professionals, handing out a total of 27 Music PEI Awards to honour those who have made an impact on the music community over the last year.

Faced with pandemic challenges as they were preparing for Music PEI Week, event organizers had make the hard decision to move the originally planned in-person Awards Party to an online-only format.

Production for the online presentation began in February, and the event team has been working to offer the community the best possible virtual Music PEI Week Awards Party. The presentation will be online on March 6 beginning at 1:30 pm on Music PEI’s Facebook page.

The chat will be open and the public is encouraged to tune in and help cheer on the Island’s music community.

Event organizers are planning to go ahead with the six in-person concerts in Charlottetown to celebrate the nominees during Music PEI Week.

Diverse voices program Music PEI recently announced the delivery of the second round of the TD Diverse Voices program, a collaboration between Music PEI and FilmPEI that gives young emerging creators the opportunity to grow their craft under the guidance and mentorship of seasoned professionals from PEI’s music and film industry.

The program was designed to support emerging musicians from underrepresented communities to record and release a single under the mentorship of John MacPhee (Paper Lions), who will help participants through the recording process at a professional studio, hiring a proven producer, and hiring a professional marketing and publicity team.

Richard and Nathan Wiley will take place March 3 at St. Paul’s.

Diggin’ Deep Roots will be held at The Guild on March 4. The show will feature nominees Alicia Toner, JennaMarie Gallant, Gordie MacKeeman, Shane Pendergast and Scott MacKay. Also on March 4, the Red Dirt Rock show sponsored by Most Wanted Pawn will take place at Trailside Music Hall. The lineup includes Arsenal Mills, Rick Sparkes and The Enablers, Nathan Wiley, and Negative J. Sounds for the Soul on March 5 at The Guild will feature Brandon Howard Roy, Joce Reyome, Noah Malcolm, and Kierrah. Later that night The Block Party will showcase of PEI’s Hip-Hop, Rap, and Electronic scene with performances by nominees Hailey MacIssac, X-Plycit, BT FLW, Lizleo, and Vince the Messenger at Trailside Music Hall.

The Festival Finale concert presented

by Buchanan Technologies will wrap up the week at Florence Simmons Performance Hall with performances by nominees Alicia Toner, Andrew Waite, Dylan Menzie, Joce Reyome, and Logan Richard.
