Self Reliance By Emerson

In Emerson essay "Self Reliance" he demonstrates that people should be relying on themselves because everyone is different and thinks differently. Emerson believes our heart will feel strongly that which we should be doing. Emerson suggests that people that people be happy with themselves and do what and do what makes them happy because we don't then we will be filled with regret. Then Emerson shows that being a person that relies on themselves will bring that person into happiness; however, if all a person does is just copy and be jealous over others that person will not be happy which Emerson says succinctly "envy is ignorance." Then Emerson goes on to say "it is easy in solitude to live after our own" to point out that we will easily accomplish...show more content... Emerson starts of the first pages of his enlightened essay with 3 epigraphs one in Latin that translates to "Do not seek outside yourself" and That is only one of Emerson's suggestions you take to achieve self reliance. The next epigraph in Emerson's first pages is a six–line stanza from "Beaumont and Fletcher's Honest Man's Fortune" and after that is one is a four–line stanza that seems to have been written by Emerson himself. All three epigraphs stress the necessity of relying on on your self for knowledge and guidance which is the main idea of basically the whole essay. Emerson talks about originality, self trust, character, society and conforming to it, nature, family, and religion. Now don't be fooled I am not listing all of Emerson's points in order I am simply explaining all he covers in his essay to further explain why or why they cannot work in 2017. Emerson begins his argument with individualism by talking about how you should form your own ideas instead of conforming to others ideas. "To believe that what is true in your private heart is true for all men– that is genius." Someone who doubts someone else's individual opinion and chooses to conform his own opinion to what society has to say afraid if being criticized himself and he lacks the ability to even produce a thought of sufficient power and originality. So because the individual can not form his own opinion then he is a victim of society and he is handed down thoughts by others who have agreed on what is

Self–reliance has the word "self" in it, so everything is about you how you realize and accept that you are responsible for everything in your life and if you want something done, you must do it yourself. Characteristics for being self–reliant come from within, being self–dependent, and self–deprived. Having the ability to listen to themselves and follow their own intuition. This Emerson essay is by far my favorite because it is so realistic. I think many people can benefit from reading this, because it is an essential in life to be self–reliant. This essay is compelling because it opens your eyes to what "self–reliance" really is and how it relates to society. Emerson is stating for self–realization, and how you do not need acceptance from society to be yourself. He writes, "What I must do, is all that concerns me, not what the people think." Following that statement, he goes on saying to be as independent as possible in our beliefs. Meaning if one is not independent is his/her own belief how would they know who they are, if you are unknown to yourself, how could we be known to anyone else. Know yourself and then let other know you. If they can accept you for who you are without trying to change you then they are worthy of your affections and if they cannot accept you, leave them alone. Concluding "Self–Reliance," Emerson leaves the readers with "Nothing can bring you peace but
