The 49th Annual NORTH CAROLINA HEREFORD CLASSIC SALE is dedicated to Phil Fishel Jr.
P
hil Fishel Jr. was born in 1942 on a small farm in Forsyth County. He was the older of two children; his sister, Marilyn, being eight years younger. Phil’s love for Hereford cattle began at a young age while assisting his father in managing the herd of Dr. John Church, owner of Easy Yoke Ranch in Winston-Salem, NC. He and his father developed their own small herd of Herefords in partnership with Dr. Church. By helping on the ranch mowing and baling hay and helping with the cattle, he was able to earn enough money to attend North Carolina State University in fall of 1960 to study engineering. While coming home on weekends to help with the family farm, he met Brenda Phillips, the love of his life, on a blind date. They have been happily married since February of 1965.
After graduating from college, Phil went to work for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in June of 1966. Phil and Brenda have two children, daughter, Andie and son, Neil. Working first shift at RJR for thirty years allowed him to be home in the afternoon and spend time working his second job farming and cattle. In 1970, Phil and Brenda established Windmill Acres Farm. Over the years, Phil and the family continued to raise efficient and productive Polled Hereford cattle. In the spring of 1978, the family began exhibiting Polled Hereford cattle. Neil showed his first Polled Hereford steer that same year, who was born and raised at Windmill Acres. Then in the spring of 1979 the Fishel’s began building their registered Polled Hereford herd by purchasing three heifers at the NC Polled Hereford State Sale. In 1984 Neil exhibited the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion steers in Raleigh at the North Carolina State Fair, this was a very proud moment for Phil and the family, an accomplishment achieved by very few even to this day. Phil and Brenda were both very involved in planning and organizing the Polled Hereford Eastern Regional Show that was held in Winston-Salem, NC in 1985. The children also showed Polled Herefords at many Junior National shows around the country and Phil was always a supportive father. Over the years Phil has helped numerous juniors get their start in the Polled Hereford breed. Phil was also a 4-H club leader in Forsyth County from 1979-1985. He was always available to share his experiences and offer guidance to the youth. In the late 80’s when the children aged out of showing cattle, his passion for collecting Farmall tractors occupied a large portion of his time. He has a widely renowned collection of restored tractors, IH equipment and IH collectibles. Then it happened in 1993 … grandchildren arrived and the world changed! When Neil’s oldest daughter Clara become of showing age, her first heifer was purchased at the NC Polled Hereford State Sale by Pawpaw & Mawmaw Fishel. So the next generation’s love for Polled Herefords began. He has enjoyed watching all three grandchildren show at local, regional and National Junior Shows. Phil does love the cattle, but they are not his first love. His family and church take precedence over everything else in his life. He is a lifelong member of Advent Moravian Church, where he has served numerous terms on the Board of Elders and many other church committees. Phil’s family includes wife Brenda of 52 years, daughter Andie, husband Wes Carpenter who live just around the corner from the farm. Son, Neil, wife Karen, daughters Clara and Melanie and son Wesley live in Kernersville on Windmill Acres East. It goes without saying the grandchildren are the pride and joy of his life. As a NC State alumnus, Phil proudly supports “The Wolfpack” by watching them play during both football and basketball seasons. Phil has always been thankful for the many blessings he has received in life and the opportunity to be part of the Hereford community. Throughout the years, Phil has taken pride in the accomplishments achieved by Windmill Acres. Recently Phil, Windmill Acres and the family exhibited the 2014 Grand Champion Bull at the North Carolina State Fair. This was a very proud moment because the bull was born and raised at Windmill Acres Farm. To this day, the tradition of raising high quality Herefords continues through Phil and his family. Although he is honored to have raised several champions, he most values the memories made with his family and many friends within the cattle business. Written by Phil’s Family.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1. TERMS: Cash. Each animal to be sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer shall settle any disputesas to bids. 2. All animals sold in this sale shall be subject to the applicable laws, rules and regulations for the state of North Carolina and all rules or regulations of any agency of the state of North Carolina. 3. Announcements at the sale ring by the owners or the auctioneer concerning the cattle will take precedence over statements in the sale catalog. 4. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and the owners or management assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents that may occur. 5. The auctioneer (Dale Stith) acts only as agent for the sellers. 6. Health papers will be available for cattle to be shipped interstate. 7. No service AI certificates will be furnished. 8. Delivery: The sellers will make every attempt to assist buyers in hauling at the lowest possible cost. 9. Insurance will be available through Harding and Harding. Please see the auctioneer for insurance. 10. Registration certificates will be transferred to the buyer at the seller’s expense. All calves at side or born before the sale will be registered at the seller’s expense.
