Fellow Cattlemen, We would like to welcome you to the 8th Annual Hereford Heritage Bull & Female Sale Monday, February 24, 2020, at the H2 Land & Cattle Sale Facility, located east of Perkins, Oklahoma. is year’s oﬀering includes 81 Hereford bulls, 35 Angus bulls, 4 Simmental bulls, 11 Hereford spring bred cows and 45 open yearling black and black baldy heifers. It is hard to believe that it is now 2020, and we are hosting our eighth annual sale. We feel we have stayed in line with our breeding philosophies and, with that in mind, have continued to make the cattle better. We still believe in producing problem-free cattle that come moderate at birth, have performance with valued-added carcass merit, are highly fertile, have maternal strength and wrap it all up in a package that is very eye appealing. rough the years, several herd bulls have sold in our sales to AI studs and to prominent seed stock operations, and we are happy to see the success those bulls are having for those respected individuals. e most important thing has been the number of repeat customers coming back each and every year. American Angus Association Genomic-Enhanced EPDs Genomic, or DNA, test results are used to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals and to characterize genetics for traits that are difficult or expensive to measure, such as feed efficiency, carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls. With the investment in genomic technology, animals who are previously placed into single animal contemporary groups benefit by receiving GE-EPDs rather than interim-EPD calculations, increasing the value of individual predictions. Genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPD) are important because they utilize genomic test results in addition to pedigree, performance and progeny data for increased reliability of an animal’s EPD. Depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproven bulls have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8 to 33 calves. Percent ranks (1–100) are provided by the American Angus Association to assist in establishing direction of interest for each trait, where a lower % rank is generally considered more favorable. If you are making selection decisions for traits that have an EPD provided by the Association, then the EPDs should be considered the selection tool of choice. The EPD and accuracy account for all sources of information available on the animal (e.g., pedigree, own record, weights/measures, genomic results). Using EPD and genomic percentile ranks separately leads to double counting information and will lessen selection efficiency. With that, the EPD provides the most accurate and up-to-date information, as it is updated every week; whereas, genomic percent ranks only update once a year and are a by-product of the system.
