IT IS OUR PLEASURE to welcome everyone to the 7th Annual Hereford Alliance Sale at Larson Running L Ranch in Clifton, Texas. Everyone here feels blessed and lucky, like the number 7, to be able to work with such an exceptional breed of cattle. The Hereford Alliance Partners and ourselves have been pouring our heart and soul into this breed each and every day for decades. We appreciate immensely the unwavering support of our program from our customers and friends. It is because of this support that we are able to dedicate ourselves to the advancement of the Hereford breed, which in turn allows us to offer our best in the 7th Annual Hereford Alliance Sale.

That time of year has once again come when I get to sit at my desk and take time for reflection and write the opening letter for the sale.

This year comes at a time when our family is in the midst of a monumental change in our lives. Lora Stegemueller, my 101-year-old grandmother on my maternal side, has just ascended into Heaven to be with our Lord. She was an exceptional woman, wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, farmer, dairy farmer, and model citizen. She was a bright mind until the end and had 101 years of personal experiences to share. She shared knowledge that one cannot even acquire from a history book. The revolutionary changes she saw in this great country in every aspect of life during that time period is incredible. Her love and belief in each of us made us believe in ourselves and inspired us to be better people.

One of my favorite times was to talk about cattle with Grandma. She couldn’t wait each year to get a catalog and quiz me about the different animals. She never asked me “What did they win?” or “What are her numbers?” Grandma would ask the questions that mattered…“What kind of momma is she? Does she tend to her calf?” or “How are her feet? Can she get around? If a cow can’t walk, how is she going to graze and find water, especially during the tough times?” I loved to listen to the stories of when they went to sales to select cattle for the dairy and how she would spend hours selecting the right ones that fit the type she knew would work and not allowing unproven trends to persuade her. Think about how many trends she saw! Of course with her dairy she had a keen eye for udder quality. As she said, “If they don’t last it was a waste of a cow, which means it cost me money!” That is perhaps why we have such a focus on udders here at the ranch.

I truly believe Grandma would be proud of this sale offering, as it is comprised of cattle that answer the Important Questions she would ask. These cattle will perform and are designed with longevity and maternal prowess. Cattle in this sale are the kind we know will work, because we have seen their cow families perform time and time again. This offering is very complete, with opportunities to acquire donors to yearling heifers. The young herd sires being offered are exceptional with excellent phenotype, stoutness, and EPDs. The mature cows are a big-time opportunity to add proven cattle to your program. Many of these we thought would never leave the ranch. Then there are the two-year-olds, which have become a popular sale attraction.

The Hereford Alliance breeders have again assembled a set that illustrates the result of their combined experience in the purebred seedstock industry and their passion for the Hereford breed. These breeders consistently bring forth their very best. They are sharing some of the very top producers and young females in their respective herds. The success that Hereford Alliance customers have had with past investments is a testament to the depth and quality present in past events, and this year is no different. These cattle combine performance with excellent phenotype to become competitors at any level in the industry. The genetics and EPDs represented on both sides of these pedigrees are second to none. The Hereford breed’s most popular sires are represented here as well as an exciting group of calves by the resident herd sires for each firm. Excellent show and donor prospects from power cow families and sired by breed-leading bulls will sell.
