FREDRICKSON RANCH BULL SALE AT THE RANCH, SPEARFISH, SD
On behalf of Frederickson Ranch, we are pleased to invite you to our 16th annual production sale held at the ranch west of Spearfish, SD.
What a year 2025 has been for the cattle market. Reflecting on my welcome letter for the 2024 sale, I find myself repeating many of the same sentiments — but who would have guessed it would have reached these heights? This fall, we shipped customer calves that sold for over $1,000 above last year’s prices. Like many, I sold a load of steer calves a little early this year, and I truly believed those prices couldn’t get much better — if only we knew what the fall would bring!
Beyond record-high prices, much of our trade area has experienced beneficial moisture this year — a welcome sight with stock ponds full of water and abundant grass. However, it’s disappointing to hear that our friends and customers in the southern hills haven’t experienced the same weather pattern.
The bulls and females are available for viewing any time at the ranch. We invite you to stop by for a visit, see the bulls, take a drive through the cow herd, or visit our website to learn more about our program.
Cattle continue to be in short supply, and beef demand remains incredible. However, some question how long consumers can sustain paying these high prices. Earlier this summer, I heard Col. Joe Goggins speak at a cattle sale. He shared that in 1985, a pound of beef took about 12 minutes of labor to purchase. With current inflation, it still takes approximately 12 minutes of labor to buy that same pound of beef. As cattle producers, we should not apologize for where beef prices are — instead, we should keep moving forward and take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
This year, we will again provide great food and fellowship on the Friday night before the sale, along with complimentary tri-tip on sale day! We encourage you to make it a weekend getaway before Christmas and enjoy the many wonderful venues that the Northern Black Hills have to offer.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Warm regards,
- Nate, Jayna, Teegan & Tiernan • Mark & Mary Kay

Frederickson Ranch offers our customers the option of two breeds. While we are extremely passionate about producing Angus cattle, we also have great excitement for producing high-quality Hereford cattle. In an industry dominated by Angus, the Hereford breed provides a great complement to the Angus Cow. Here are two very simple but key advantages a Hereford bull can bring to your operation:
Heterosis: Crossbreeding allows you to capture additional value through increased weight, performance, and feed efficiency. While terminal crossbreeding with various breeds can achieve this, a Hereford bull can provide all these benefits without changing the hide color (except for that beautiful white face) or decreasing the value of the sister mates, unlike most terminal crosses. As demand for feeder steers reaching a finish weight over 1500-1600 lbs increases, Hereford bulls enable ranchers to keep their Angus-based cows moderate in size, forage-efficient, and very maternal. Crossing these cows with a high-powered Hereford bull provides the added performance, length, and bone needed to produce high-quality steers that meet the feeders demands.
Hereford Bull Offering
Fertility: The Black Baldy female, compared to her straight Angus counterpart, has shown a 7% improvement in conception rate. Since fertility is one of the most profitable traits, this is a significant dollar advantage over a cow’s lifetime. (Circle A Ranch Research Project) By utilizing a Hereford bull and adding the black baldy female to your herd you can maintain all the advantages of marketed black hided feeder cattle all while adding the fertility and disposition advantages a black baldy cow brings to your operation.
Frederickson Ranch works closely with our customers to source high-quality maternal Angus replacements if you choose to use only Hereford bulls on straight black cows and sell all your heifer calves in the fall. We will also assist you in building demand for your Black Baldy replacement females

PYRAMID CANDOR 9139, who sold in our 2020 sale to Coyote Ridge Ranch in Colorado, has proven himself through his progeny. After seeing his calves there, we decided to bring him back into our program to continue the excellent consistency of the Daybreak line, which has been so successful for us. Candor progeny are dense-made, heavily muscled cattle that are moderate in frame but still demonstrate impressive performance and rib shape. He is a balanced trait sire, with daughters that exemplify the kind of cows you want to build a herd around. While producing the black baldy steer calves that the feeders demand, his offspring excel across multiple traits. Both his mother and full sister are among the most productive and best cows on our ranch. We are offering 18 sons of Candor this year, and they truly represent the exceptional quality of this sire.

GREAT PLAINS was purchased from Topp Herefords in 2022. Great Plains has done an excellent job of producing the rancher’s kind. They are big, stout, rugged bulls that have length, muscle, and growth making him the ideal bull to put on moderate framed Angus cows. They are the kind that will add more pounds at weaning. Great Plains is homozygous polled and marked very well. His dam is a great producer for Topp Herefords and falls in our qualifications, of what we feel a great cow should look like. We calved his first daughter this spring and they are very productive and fertile. 16 sons will sell this fall.

For the Frederickson Family, ranching is truly a generational legacy. Each generation has the opportunity to learn from the prior, gaining valuable insights and advice, and continuing to grow and improve upon it. Jayna and I cannot thank my father and mother, Mark and Mary Kay, enough for the opportunity to return to the family ranch. More importantly, we are grateful for the many years of wisdom, encouragement, and advice—not only on how to be a good stockman but, more importantly, on how to be a good person.
With that said, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to honor Mark—or what his favorite fans call him, “Papa”— this past October at the American Hereford Association’s annual meeting, when he was inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame. Congratulations on an honor so well deserved.

LT CHIEFTON 1440 was our selection and the high-selling Angus bull at the 2022 LT Ranch spring bull sale. We added him to our herd due to his impressive muscle shape, length of body, and excellent structure and foot quality. Chiefton is out of one of the most prepotent Angus cows at Thiel Ranch, and perhaps in the breed. She has already produced three herd sires working for prominent registered herds across the country. Chiefton’s sons will again be featured in this year’s sale, with over 40 expected to sell. They have once again exceeded expectations in performance, structure, and eye appeal, all while showcasing exceptional foot quality. The Chiefton bred females are extremely feminine and angular, embodying the maternal look we strive for.

PYRAMID COAL TRAIN 0005 was retained in 2020 as our top selection among the U2 Coalition sons. Coal Train is known for adding exceptional length of body, muscle shape, and performance. We have safely used him on heifers for several years, and over the past five years, he has been heavily utilized in our operation, with more than 30 daughters retained. His sons were the high-selling sire group at the 2024 bull sale. His daughters are very productive, with excellent udders, and he truly exemplifies the strength of our program—the proof is in his offspring. If you’re aiming to maintain balance in your operation, consider buying Coal Train’s sons, as he consistently produces top-quality steer calves that will perform and females that will add value back to your ranch.
FR DOMINION 3019 was one of the high-selling bulls in our 2023 bull sale, going to Steppler Ranch, up in Montana. Dominion possesses exceptional eye appeal and design, flawless structure and overall balance. Bred from several generations of cows known for their outstanding udder quality and fleshing ability. Dominion consistently produces calves with excellent growth, muscle shape, and performance in a moderate frame package. He was used successfully this year in our first calf heifers. His mother is a moderateframe, easy-fleshing cow with a flawless udder and very small teat size. Titus is a bull that will be a part of our program for years to come, and he is destined to sire cattle that excel across all facets of the industry. FREDERICKSON RANCH OFFERS TWO AGE GROUPS OF BULLS. This is done by design to not only provide our customers with two different age groups of bulls, but it also allows us to break up our calving due to labor and pasture constraints. The yearling bulls are primarily a product of our embryo transfer program and first calf heifers. The embryo calves are out of our commercial cows that summer on National Forest permits. Due to constraints getting cows tightly bred in the forest we expose them for 40 days before they head up in the middle of June. It is also more advantageous to have an older calf in the forest since the cattle travel a very large area. In addition, we calve the majority of our first calf heifers in February giving us a nice group of yearling calving ease heifers bull candidates. The older bulls in the sale are a product of our registered cows that calve in March and April. As you will notice in the sale book weaning weights will vary between the two programs. The embryo calves will have a definite advantage in weaning weights due to environmental conditions. The cows in the forest have to fight less heat, flies and always seem to have an abundance of grass.
BULLS ARE ALL DEVELOPED RIGHT HERE AT THE RANCH. The bull calves are weaned in late August and put on a high roughage growing ration through the sale. After the sale we will back the bulls down and shoot for around a 2 lb. ADG. The yearling bulls will then be semen tested and delivered after April 1st.
We feel this gives our yearling bulls a competitive advantage to holding up long term. By having an early sale it allows us to back these bulls down to a high roughage replacement heifer ration, instead of pushing them to achieve the yearling weights needed to compete with other seedstock suppliers for the spring sale season.
The 2-year-old bulls are weaned around the first of November and put on a 2.5 lb. ADG grower ration through the spring. They are then turned out to pasture for 3 months and then brought back into the feedlot around Sept 1st. They will then be fed a 44 mg/cal diet to shine them up for sale day. 2-year-old bulls will be delivered shortly after the sale.

Actual birthweights are published on all embryo calves but take into consideration the recipient mother does play a factor in the birthweight of the calf, we recommend you put more emphasis on the genomically enhanced CED and BW EPDS.

Commercial Bred Females
For the first time, Frederickson Ranch is excited to offer a select group of commercial coming 3- and 4-year-old bred females.
Traditionally, we’ve marketed these cows private treaty, but this year, we’re giving you the opportunity to evaluate and purchase these females through our annual sale.
These cows have been bred, raised, and developed right here on the ranch, ensuring their quality and production ability. The work has already been done on these females as every cow in this offering has calved on the ranch and has been screened for udder quality and disposition.
This small, well-selected group provides a unique opportunity to see the maternal strength of our cowherd firsthand. The females were ultrasounded in August and will be re-preg-check prior to the sale. Females will be available to view anytime prior to the sale.
Group A: Group B:
20 black and black baldy females, ultrasound checked, due to calve between March 10th and March 30th.
20 black and black baldy females, ultrasound checked, due to calve between April 10th and April 30th.
We sincerely thank our valued customers for the past 15 years!
