th Welcome to our 11 Annual Sale!

First of all, we want to thank all of you who have shown interest in our cattle and breeding program. We have been blessed in so many ways with great friends and family. Coming through 2020, I think we all realize just how important these people are and what our priorities need to be. We also want to take a moment to give a special thanks to Jim Birdwell. After many years most notably as our friend and mentor and a number of years as the Auctioneer for our sales, Jim has retired. We wish the best for Jim and look forward to seeing him at many Hereford events for years to come. With that, we are extremely excited to welcome Dustin Layton as our new Auctioneer. Dustin brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the cattle industry, and we are looking forward to working with him. Should you have questions on the cattle selling or need assistance, don’t hesitate to give Dustin a call. The bulls and heifers offered in this sale are the products of many years of emphasizing a balanced breeding program focusing on cattle with acceptable birth weights that will perform, have desirable carcass traits and come from sound, good uddered, functional cows. Nearly all of the cattle selling have GE-EPDs (Genomic Enhanced EPDs). GE EPDs provide the latest technology available to genetically test an animal to obtain the highest accuracy possible in their EPDs. We do this to give buyers a higher level of confidence that their bull or heifer will do the job they want. EPDs are current at the time of catalog printing, but all lots will be updated and available the week before the sale. You will also notice many of the bulls designated with this logoThis designation signifies that the bull is in the top 50% of the breed for producing feeder cattle that will excel in the economically relevant traits of gain, feed efficiency, and carcass merit when mated to Angus cows. To help you with this early sale date, we will keep all the bulls on feed at Delaney Herefords free of charge until May 1, 2021. Prior to that date, we will gather yearling weights and carcass data at no cost to the buyer. All the bulls will be semen tested and fully guaranteed. If you can’t make the sale, please call one of us or our sale staff for assistance. You can also bid on LiveAuctions.TV the day of the sale. Thank you to our customers for your past purchases, friendship, and the confidence you have shown in our program. We look forward to working with you in the future! Jerry & Pete

It’s difficult to let go of a female who has had such a positive, lasting impact on our operations. We wanted to offer something special this year and we could not think of any individual more special than 45C. She was the high selling live lot in the 2016 Mile High National sale at $62,500 and we have been fortunate to work with the buyers: Eichler Livestock, Weller Ranch and K&C Cattle the past few years to raise some great offspring and generate significant income. But the time has come to move on and here is a great opportunity to own a proven producer, of the highest quality, in the prime of her life. In just two calf crops 45C has generated over $250,000 income. She has sons working in some of the most prestigious Hereford herds in America and being used widely AI across the country. She is a mother of herd bulls. Sons include: Prominent, Stand Out, Benton, Substance and Miles Ahead to name a few. 45C’s daughters have highlighted our Denver pens and online sales in recent years. A daughter sired by Mighty sells in this sale as lot 51, along with serveral sons. She has clicked with every single bull she has been mated with to produce high value progeny. Her full brother, Munson, was Junior Calf Champion Bull in Denver 2018 and sold for $60,000 in the Mile High sale.

Looking at her progeny you can see the eye appeal she stamps on each of her offspring. But maybe even more important, is the impact she has on combining breed leading EPD’s with prestigious phenotype. Just consider these percentile rankings for 45C’s EPDs: Weaning Weight, Carcass Weight and $CHB all in the top 1% of the breed. Yearling Weight, Scrotal, Milk & Growth and REA all in the top 2% of the breed and Marbling in the top 5% of the breed. I challenge you to find another proven, producing female available today that can provide these numbers with her soundness, look, udder quality and style. 45C has flushed well both conventionally and IVF. In her most recent 10 conventional flushes she has averaged 15.6 grade 1 embryos. In three IVF aspirations she has averaged 10 Grade 1 Embryos. She sells open and ready to go to work for the new owner immediately. The income generating opportunities are endless and her story is far from over. If you are serious about producing high-quality Hereford cattle then look no further. Let 45C take your program to the next level.

Lots 2-7 are full brothers and the first sons of JDH AH Miles Ahead 35F to sell. We are very pleased with how these Miles Ahead calves turned out and can’t wait to offer them to you! This pedigree is certainly a special one and is highlighted by two of the best cows at Delaney Herefords, 45C and 11B. Those same two cows can be found in the pedigree of herd bulls Benton and Prominent who were the high sellers in this sale last year averaging $27K, as well as, Standout who sold in the National Hereford Sale in Denver for $29K. Not to mention, a full sister to lots 2-7 was the second high seller in our Fall Online Sale bringing $8250. These genetics are proven, time tested, and ready to generate income for you!

One of the larger framed bulls of the flush, 39H is dark red, homozygous polled and has been one of our favorites all summer. This masculine bruiser came off the cow at 864 lbs! For as big and stout as he is we love the fact that he’s still smooth in his joints and flexible at the ground. This great bull hopefully finds himself in a purebred operation somewhere, but if not, he will sire fantastic crossbred calves that will be pounds heavy and great mothers. Top 5% WW, REA. Lead off bull in our Pen of 5 at the Cattleman’s Congress Show in Oklahoma City. This homozygous polled bull is awesome! He is dense made, bold ribbed, and deep sided. The power he brings is truly impressive especially when you compliment it with the great set of feet and legs he offers down low. His Dimaggio sired mother is perfect uddered, bred back AI and is receiving consideration to enter the donor pen after she raised this brute. He has a maternal sister sired by NJW Hometown 73C that is one of our best replacements that is safe AI as well. Phenotypically He’s one of our favorites, genetically he is backed by a fantastic cow family that excels in fertility and longevity, not to mention this guys ranks in the top 1% of the breed for YW and WW! Top 5% M&G, CW, and REA. Top 10% SC.

Here’s a Miles Ahead out of a really nice Dimaggio sired cow that gets better every day. These Miles Ahead calves are stamped with a big hip, big tops and big feet! We love the power they bring.

Here is a calf we like a lot and a member of the pen of 5 bulls at the Cattleman’s Congress Show in OKC. He is a complete package that is extremely sound in his structure, moves easily and is thick made and well balanced with great eye appeal. Visitors all summer quickly picked him out as a favorite. His dam is one of our best young cows with a beautiful udder who will end up in the donor pen. This is her third calf. Her first was a bull we used on heifers in our own herds, her second is our top replacement bred heifer, and now this lad is continuing to prove her producing ability. Her three calves boast an average BW ratio of 93, and weaning weight ratio of 110.7! This is a herd bull in the making who has a moderate birth weight and outstanding growth EPD’s with WW in the top 1% and YW in the top 2% of the breed. Combine his great cow family with the top side of his pedigree that includes the great 45C and we are confident in his ability to leave your herd with a great set of bulls and heifers. AND he is Homozygous polled!

Here’s a goggle eyed dark red son of 97F who has made a big impact in one calf crop. He does a great job of siring outstanding commercial bulls as well as functional, good looking replacement females. 27H is a great example of that. He’s heavily pigmented and has all the pieces to make great F1s. Out of a stout 33Z daughter. Maternal brother to lot 57. Top 10% SC and US.

Here’s a scale pounder, this bold rugged son of 97F has two dark eyes to go along with a ton of power. His mother is a big framed daughter of Redeem that always raises a big calf with a nursing ratio of 4 at 112. Top 5% WW, YW, M&G. Top 10% Milk, US, REA, and CHB.

This calf is potentially our favorite 97F sired bull. We should have pictured him due to the fact he’s 100% pigmented, homozygous polled and is phenotypically fantastic. He has a 2 year old maternal sister that arguably has the best udder on the farm and was a favorite first calf heifer of many visitors this summer. This is a great bull that hopefully finds his way into a purebred operation but if not, he will make fantastic baldies. Top 5% US. Top 10% BMI and BII.

Another 97F sired calf that’s stamped with goggle eyes and is red to the ground. This bull has been one of Jerry’s favorites for awhile now. He’s so deep and soggy in his appearance and has a great disposition and look. Plus he is homozygous polled. Top 1% WW. Top 5% YW.

A member of our Pen of 5 bulls at the Cattleman’s Congress Show in OKC. This flush of bulls offers something truly intriguing. A complete outcross pedigree and homozygous polled! Add that on top of his excellent phenotype and this bull has the makings of being a great herd bull. Stout featured and sound footed, this big bodied bull is a definite sale highlight. His mother, 4124, was purchased from Pelton’s and has worked great in our operation; she posts a WWR of 6 @ 102.8. Great opportunity to buy an outcross sire with great phenotype. Full brother to lots 31 and 32. Top 10% WW, M&G, US, CW, and REA.

We used Bently as an outcross sire hoping to get bulls like this. We believe this son is perfectly equipped to go to work on a cow herd and sire calves with moderate birth and excellent growth. His carcass traits, CBH and pedigree project his calves ability to push down the scale. He is out of a beautiful uddered 33Z daughter. This bull is a can’t miss opportunity. Top 1% CW, REA, and CHB. Lots 38 and 39 are full brothers that have been fun to watch grow this year. Their sire, Bentley, is one the of top CHB bulls in the breed and it shows in his calves. We are keeping all three full sisters of this mating in our cowherd for replacement females. 33H is very stylish with excellent pigment. His red hood and goggle eyes made him an easy one to find in the pasture all year. He is also in the top 1% of the breed for yearling weight and CHB and in the top 5% for weaning weight.

92H has really came on strong down the stretch to outperform his brother on the scales. Even though he is about a month younger, he has a bit more length and frame with a far more balanced set of EPDs. He will be one that catches your attention come sale day. I think you will find that both of these bulls square up really well and have excellent feet and legs that don’t disappoint when they are on the move. I don’t believe you can go wrong with either option.

This bred heifer may be as good as any we have. Tremendous body and mass combined with very low BW and from one of our very best producing cows. AN EXPLANATION OF EPDS

Calving Ease – Direct (CE) - CE EPD is based on calving ease scores and birth weights and is measured on a percentage. CE EPD indicates the influence of the sire on calving ease in females calving at 2 years of age. For example, if sire A has a CE EPD of 6 and sire B has a CE EPD of -2, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would be born with an 8% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s calves. Birth Weight (BW) - BW EPD is an indicator trait for calving ease and is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a BW EPD of 3.6 and sire B has a BW EPD of 0.6, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would come 3 lb. heavier at birth when compared to sire B’s calves. Larger BW EPDs usually, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. The figure in parentheses found after each EPD is an accuracy value or reliability of the EPD. Weaning Weight (WW) - WW EPD is an estimate of pre-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a WW EPD of 60 and sire B has a WW EPD of 40, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 20 lb. heavier at weaning when compared to sire B’s calves. Yearling Weight (YW) - YW EPD is an estimate of post-weaning growth that is measured in pounds. For example, if sire A has a YW EPD of 100 and sire B has a YW EPD of 70, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s calves would weigh 30 lb. heavier at a year of age when compared to sire B’s calves. Maternal Milk (MM) - The milking ability of a sire’s daughters is expressed in pounds of calf weaned. It predicts the difference in average weaning weights of sires’ daughters’ progeny due to milking ability. Daughters of the sire with a +14 MM EPD should produce progeny with 205-day weights averaging 24 lb. more (as a result of greater milk production) than daughters of a bull with a MM EPD of -10 lb. (14 minus -10.0 = 24 lb.). This difference in weaning weight is due to total milk production during the entire lactation. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) - MCE EPD predicts how easily a sires daughters will calve at 2 years of age and is measured on a percentage. For example, if sire A has a MCE EPD of 7 and sire B has a CE EPD of -3, then you would expect on average if comparably mated, sire A’s daughters would calve with a 10% more likely chance of being unassisted when compared to sire B’s daughters. Mature Cow Weight (MCW) - The MCW EPD was designed to help breeders select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd. The trait was developed after years of cow weight data collection and the EPD relates directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd. An example of how the MCW EPD allows breeders to compare sires: If sire A has a MCW EPD of 100 and sire B has an EPD of 85, then you would expect the females of sire A, if mated to similar cows, to be 15 lb. heavier at mature size. Udder Suspension (US) - Scores range from 9 (very tight) to 1 (very pendulous) and represent assessments of udder support. Weak udder suspension results in pendulous udders that make it difficult for a calf to nurse. Weak suspension in the udder indicates a lack of support in the ligament that ties the udder to the cow’s body wall. Over time, weakness in this ligament will allow the udder to hang down too far from the body and may subject the udder to serious problems and increased potential for injury. UDDR EPDs are reported on the scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a UDDR EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a UDDR EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score better udder suspension in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B. Teat size (TS) - Scores range from 9 (very small) to 1 (very large, balloon shaped) and are subjective assessments of the teat length and circumference. Oversized teats are difficult for newborn calves to nurse, and the calf may not receive adequate colostrum. This could lead to a higher incidence of scours or decreased immunity levels in the newborn calf. TEAT EPDs are reported on the scoring scale. Differences in sire EPDs predict the difference expected in the sires’ daughters’ udder characteristics when managed in the same environment. For example, if sire A has a teat size EPD of 0.4, and sire B has a teat size EPD of -0.1, the difference in the values is 0.5, or one-half of a score. If daughters of sires A and B are raised and managed in the same environment, you would expect half a score smaller teat size in daughters of sire A, compared to sire B. Scrotal Circumference (SC) - Measured in centimeters and adjusted to 365 days of age, SC EPD is the best estimate of fertility. It is related to the bull’s own semen quantity and quality, and is also associated with age at puberty of sons and daughters. Larger SC EPDs suggest younger age at puberty. Yearling sons of a sire wth a .7 SC EPD should have yearling scrotal circumference measurements that average 0.7 centimeters (cm) larger than progeny by a bull with an EPD of 0.0 cm. In the Hereford genetic analysis, a multiple-trait model was used for scrotal circumference. Weaning weight was used as a predictor variable to increase the prediction accuracy of SC EPDs. Therefore, an animal with a weaning weight EPD should also have a SC EPD. Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF) - The AHA’s new Sustained Cow Fertility EPD (SCF) is a prediction of a cow’s ability to continue to calve from three years of age through twelve years of age, given she calved as a two-year-old. The EPD is expressed as a deviation in the proportion of the ten-possible calving’s to twelve years old expressed as a probability. For example, the daughters of a bull with a 30 EPD would have the genetic potential to have one more calf by age twelve then the daughters from a bull with a 20 EPD. In other words, the daughters from the 30 EPD bull would have a 10% greater probability of having one more calf than the bull with a 20 EPD. This is equivalent to saying that the daughters are 10% more likely to remain in the herd to age 12. Dry Matter Intake (DMI) - The Dry Matter Intake EPD predicts the daily consumption of pounds of feed. For example, if sire A has a DMI EPD of 1.1 and sire B has a DMI EPD of 0.1, you would expect sire B’s progeny, if comparably mated, to consume on average 1 pound of feed less per day. Carcass Weight (CW) - Carcass weight is a beneficial trait when considering the impact that pounds have relative to end product value. At the same age constant endpoint, sires with higher values for carcass weight will add more pounds of hot carcass weight compared to sires with lower values for carcass weight. For example, if sire A has a CW EPD of 84 and sire B has a CW EPD 64, then you would expect the progeny of sire A, if harvested at the same age constant endpoint, to have a 20-lb. advantage in terms of hot carcass weight. Rib Fat (FAT) - The FAT EPD reflects differences in adjusted 365-day, 12th-rib fat thickness based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with low, or negative FAT EPDs are expected to produce leaner progeny than sires with higher EPDs. Ultrasound measures are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Ribeye Area (REA) - REA EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day ribeye area measurement based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Sires with relatively higher REA EPDs are expected to produce better-muscled and higher percentage yielding slaughter progeny than will sires with lower REA EPDs. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Marbling (MARB) - MARB EPDs reflect differences in an adjusted 365-day marbling score (intramuscular fat, [IMF]) based on carcass measurements of harvested cattle. Breeding cattle with higher MARB EPDs should produce slaughter progeny with a higher degree of IMF and therefore higher quality grades. Ultrasound measurements are also incorporated into this trait and have been shown to be highly correlated with the performance of slaughter progeny. All data is expressed on a carcass scale. Baldy Maternal Index (BMI$) - The Baldy Maternal Index is a maternally focused index that is based on a production system that uses Hereford x Angus cross cows. Progeny of these cows are directed towards Certified Hereford Beef. This index has significant weight on Sustained Cow Fertility, which predicts fertility and longevity of females. There is a slightly positive weight on Weaning Weight, Mature Cow Weight and Milk which accounts for enough growth but ensures females do not increase inputs. There is some negative emphasis on Dry Matter Intake, but a positive weighting on Carcass Weight which is anticipated to provide profitability from finishing of non-replacement. females and castrated males. Marbling and Rib-eye Area are also positively weighted to keep the harvested progeny successful for CHB. This index is geared to identify Hereford bulls that will be profitable when used in a rotational cross with mature commercial Angus cows. Certified Hereford Beef Index (CHB$) - The Certified Hereford Beef Index is a terminal sire index that is built on a production system where Hereford bulls are mated to mature commercial Angus cows and all progeny will be targeted for Certified Hereford Beef after the finishing phase. This index has significant weight on Carcass Weight to ensure profit on the rail. As well there is a positive weighting for Average Daily Gain along with a negative weighting on Dry Matter Intake to ensure efficient pounds of growth in the finishing phase. Keep in mind, this production system takes advantage of complimentary breeding with the commercial Angus cow. Although Marbling is weighted positively in this index, a positive weighting for Rib-eye Area and a negative weighting for Back Fat are a greater priority in this index to allow for optimum end-product merit. This is the only index that has no emphasis on fertility. Remember that no replacement heifers are being retained.
