NS Polled Herefords was established in 1954, as a 4-H project, when my father purchased two polled Hereford heifers from a local breeder in Indiana, where I grew up. Those heifers were affordable because they both had “extra white” markings. One of those heifers proved to be a fair mother, at best, but the other convinced me to remain a continuous Hereford breeder until now. In fact, as I recall with her thickness, depth of body, mothering ability and personality, she would probably fit today. She was a winner at the local county fair! She established one of my lifetime goals to remain attached within agriculture as a progressive Hereford breeder. That has certainly raised a few eyebrows when I spent 40 years of medical practice working exclusively in cardiac surgery operating rooms providing anesthesiology care for thousands of patients. Many of these patients undergoing coronary bypass procedures, a problem often associated with excess red meat intake, and is now being associated with negative environmental changes. My strong science background, including research, gave me the drive to establish the goal for NS, the need to document and propagate positive genomics within a pleasing phenotype, producing a meat product for extreme enjoyment even if in moderation. As for many long-term breeders this adventure has frequently led down the wrong path. As a kid I couldn’t wait for the next month’s Hereford magazine to arrive, looking through the ads, show and sale reports for some of the “progressive” breeders of the time. I recall my dad and I visiting an extremely well-advertised ranch in the South, entering a barn where there were 30 or 40 2-year-old bulls tied up daily for display, none of them taller than me as a kid, but all with amazing prices. One bull we attempted that day was not within my dad’s budget, which was fortunate because within a year that pedigree was associated with a genetic defect. In those times such a finding led to disposing of all related animals, compared to today’s ability to utilize DNA to document genetic defects within specific animals. Another pathway cattle breeders have accepted it was good for the industry to generate larger carcass through increased frame size. Taken to the extreme there were years where we were convinced that an 8.3 frame Hereford had to be much better than the 7.9 frame standing next. At least it made judging shows rather straight forward! Often good ole times prove to be not so good. Today we have the ability to document positive economic traits with more to come I’m sure. Even the top commercial herds and feedlots are/will be taking advantage of the same information. Now is not the time to watch, be a participant. Over many years NS established it could be competitive with those herds who were ultra-competitive on the national show scene. We have paraded cattle in all national exhibitions except Reno. We were honored to exhibit three national champion bulls, many class and division winners at the national level. One of our joys was successfully competing in the bull and heifer pens show in Denver, particularly as a small, Midwest breeder with limited animal numbers to select from, and even more so because our animals generally had the best, across-the-board EPDs (science) within the groups! For those who haven’t been to the Denver show, I strongly urge you to attend; at no other Hereford national show, possibly in the world, will you find such an amazing display of phenotype in the pens or on the Hill, classes now so deep in quality often a top-breeding bull for the industry will place down in a strong class and still an excellent animal. As associated DNA and carcass documentation is gathered and published, better individual selection is possible beyond “just being pretty on that day in Denver.” I just went through my Denver show catalogs; seems I never missed 1994 through 2018! Looked forward to every year to gather useful information, just like my medical conventions. As we all know, shows and sales give us opportunities to mingle with those who may be extremely progressive in their ideas on what is important in the beef cattle breeding business. A couple breeders, like Bryce Schumann and Doug Gerber come to mind, whose cattle had some show ring success which they were leaving that behind, and then beginning to utilize those available scientific tools to incorporate “under the hide” positive beef markers. Generally, such cattle were less competitive in the show ring, still they forged on with like-minded cattlemen in other breeds, people we should thank for making a sacrifice to advance cattle breeding. For NS it became a focus to generate cattle where all data was collected, bred for the positives and presented in a pleasing, competitive phenotype. Our first national champion bull was at a former APHA “EPD numbers” show, judged that day by our current AHA Executive Vice President. That was an additional stimulus for NS that science and award-winning phenotypes could be bred for, however difficult, on a continuous basis. As in all science not all positives provide a good outcome. It was later shown that particular national champion, and his equally award-winning flush brothers, could pass on genetic defects. Unfortunately, at that time it wasn’t possible to measure presence within individual animals. A hard bit of information to accept however did not change our goals. Now with DNA and ultrasound information, plus diligence, we know every generation can produce beef improvement within stacked pedigrees and superior phenotype. We have documented such in the females available in this sale. I believe one must gather the data in the females as well as the bulls, where the goal is to document and improve every generation. Ratios are important but so are your specific generation goal measurements such as REA or MARB and eventually DMI. It is my hope some of these females will go to breeders with similar goals because the base is set. In closing I must give tremendous credit to many positive interactions with cattle breeders throughout the country for some success in influencing my directions in cattle breeding but most of all to two long-time, back-to-back associates — Mr. Lyle Kidwell and Gene Steiner. I have been very fortunate they were very good cattlemen and excellent ambassadors for NS, and managers who I could trust for their input and guidance within the purebred cattle business. One final word: one really good female, propagated correctly, is worth dozens of others. They are available today. If I were to continue I would want to expand numbers again to propagate these specific genetics, and probably exhibit to reassure NS would remain on right track. With Gene expanding his own ventures and me not wanting to reestablish (my luck has been too good) it is time for me to be happy and content with the success enjoyed over the time span, cheer for others’ successes. Fellow cattlemen, Writing this welcome letter comes with mixed emotions! As in all aspects of our lives, things come down to your attitude on the situation. Kym and I feel very fortunate to have had this fantastic opportunity over the last 30 years. Working with Lyle and Henrietta, before moving the entire cow herd to Ohio, and the last 28 years working directly with Norm has been very rewarding and we say “thank you all”. It is with great pride and excitement that we now offer this well documented, nationally competitive set of cattle to you!! Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you as you analyze this offering, Thank you consignors for really digging deep into your set of cattle for this offering. Gene Steiner
