There is No Secret Ingredient

Success usually relies on more than luck.

Kung Fu Panda, one of my favorite childhood movie franchises, features a cartoon panda learning that the only thing he really needs to be successful is himself. Memorable quotes connect the movies’ storylines:

“If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are now.”

“Your real strength comes from being the best ‘you’ you can be.”

“The only thing that matters is what you choose to be now.”

The moral of the story: there is no secret ingredient. It’s just you.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to change or growth, whether you apply that principal to yourself or your operation. And, success is not a result of some magic formula or stroke of luck. Instead, success is built upon a foundation — an authentic understanding of yourself, your goals and what you value.

Authenticity is about being true to you, embracing what you’re good at and not-so-good at and owning your unique story. Moreover, authenticity plays into fostering genuine connections and meaningful relationships — which are integral to essentials like establishing a customer base and learning from fellow breeders. When we remain authentic, we attract likeminded individuals who align with and believe in our values and vision.

Furthermore, authenticity breeds innovation. Success in any facet of life is a journey of growth and learning and chasing after what is important to you. The next time you find yourself searching for the secret ingredient to success, remember what guides you and trust in your journey.

In this issue

In the April 2024 issue of Hereford World, we feature this year’s Dams of Distinction on Page 28 and Sires of Distinction on Page 36. These lists are a direct reflection of hard work and years of breeding decisions. Efficient, fertile and productive females are the bedrock of the most successful cow herds. While all females may have the opportunity to become a Dam of Distinction, only a small percentage meet the program’s rigorous requirements and fit the job description of an ideal cow year after year. This year, 2,514 females were recognized. The Sires of Distinction program recognizes Hereford bulls whose daughters have received at least seven Dams of Distinction awards, and this year, 105 sires were recognized.

Bulls evaluated in the American Hereford Association’s (AHA) National Reference Sire Program (NRSP) provide opportunity for commercial and seedstock breeders to learn more about their genetics while finding sires with potential to impact herds across the country.

The data from the 2022-born group of calves is in. The nearly 300 Hereford steers tested as part of the program graded 50% Prime, and 100% Choice and Prime. Shane Bedwell, director of breed improvement, says, “This is a major win for the breed and a great testament to Olsen Ranches’ steadfast pursuit to make the breed better. The results are also a compliment to the breeders behind these impressive sires.”

Rebuilding the nation’s beef cow herd from the lowest level since 1961 has yet to begin. There were 3.47 million head fewer beef cows at the beginning of this year than the most recent peak in 2019. This deficit implies an extraordinary opportunity for commercial cow-calf producers to improve the herd.

The last time such opportunity existed, producers increased the average genetic potential for post-weaning growth. Along with technology and management, fewer cows continue to produce more beef tonnage.

Producers also increased carcass marbling in their herds, much of it through straight breeding. This led to giant strides in carcass quality and strong consumer beef demand. However, it came with lost maternal and direct heterosis, resulting in less cow fertility and stagnant or fewer pounds of calf per cow exposed.

Judging by conversations with producers this past year and growing Hereford demand expressed at sales across the country, more commercial producers are adding heterosis back to their herds by crossbreeding with Hereford genetics. Years of industrywide research document the advantages of crossbreeding systems.

Hereford is the obvious and proven choice for crossbreeding. Along with heterosis, Hereford’s genetic strengths include fertility, feed efficiency, docility and longevity. Plus, commercial producers can maintain or improve average carcass quality when crossbreeding with Hereford genetics because of the positive genetic trends established by dedicated Hereford breeders. Hereford is the hallmark of beef cow efficiency.

The American Hereford Association (AHA) commissioned the University of Tennessee to conduct a real-world economic analysis of breeding commercial Angus cows to a Hereford bull over time versus breeding

commercial Angus cows to an Angus bull. As you would expect, heterosis, especially maternal heterosis, drives significantly more net revenue per cow per year and more net worth, whether the herd size is 30 head or 500 head.

Across a decade, breeding commercial Angus cows to a Hereford bull yielded 21% more net revenue per cow per year ($76 per head) for the 30-head herd and 24% more ($90 per head) for the 500-head herd, compared to breeding commercial Angus cows to Angus bulls. You can find more details about the study in the research section of the AHA website and in the January issue of Baldy Advantage.

Hats off to the elite

Building cows that breed and produce a superior calf on time year after year demands proven genetics and management acumen.

AHA Dams of Distinction (DOD) are the epitome of maternal genetics and the dedicated efforts in building and proving them. Females earn recognition based on data submitted through the AHA Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™). These females emulate the original vison of the breed — build more pounds of quality beef and more productionefficient females with fewer resources than otherwise possible.

Females like these are always in demand — correct, sound feet and legs, with quality udders, added fleshing ability and an easy disposition, along with the objective traits of calving ease, optimal growth, optimal milk production, efficiency and end product merit.

In turn, sires — often out of elite dams like these — are the bedrock for building foundational females across a herd. The AHA’s Sires of Distinction program, also highlighted in this issue, recognizes sires that have produced at least seven DODs.

is provided by the breeder. Keep the following tips in mind to ensure the registration process goes smoothly and quickly.

Registration tips

First, you must have an active, up-to-date membership with the American Hereford Association (AHA) in order to register calves. This means your annual membership has been renewed and your member service fee has been billed.

The conception date (or embryo recovery date, for embryo transfer [ET] calves) determines the breeder of the calf, and the owner of the cow at the time of birth determines the calf’s original owner.

When registering ET calves, a recipient dam can only be entered if the recip cow is a registered

owners that are listed for the dam, the calf must be registered to one owner, and then transferred to all owners that should be listed on the calf’s papers.

Tattoos are a requirement at the time of registration. It is not required in both ears, but the calf must be tattooed in at least one ear, and that tattoo must be reported to AHA at the time of registration. The tattoo is up to you, the breeder; but remember, the tattoo must be

a combination of numbers and/or letters only — no symbols can be

Brands make a promise to consumers. Successful brands consistently deliver on that promise. For Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) the promise is premium quality from a producer-owned organization backed by Herefords’ unique story.

“In 2017-18, when the American Hereford Association made the decision for CHB to be exclusively Choice and premium Choice grade (upper two-thirds of Choice) and higher, it was a bold move,” says Craig Bacon, Certified Hereford specifications. If a retailer or food service has a branded program today it’s likely to be an Angus program, so CHB stands out.

At the same time, CHB’s carcass quality can run with anyone and beat most. In fact, if you pit CHB against CAB in a blind cutting test, odds say to bet on CHB. In simple terms, a cutting test determines the percentage yield of each cut. Values are assigned to these percentages, which enables gross margin and profitability comparisons. A restaurant with which Bacon

Craig Bacon was appointed to the Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) board four years ago and was named CHB chair three years ago. He is a meat industry veteran and lifelong Hereford breeder. He is currently the senior vice president of technical service for Simmons Foods, a multi-faceted vertically integrated poultry products company. Previously, Craig spent 27 years as the senior vice president of research and development for Tyson Foods.

Craig is also an adjunct professor at both the University of Tennessee and the University of Arkansas.

Craig and his wife, Debbie, are the proud parents of three children and five grandchildren. They reside on a cattle and sheep farm in Northwest Arkansas, where they raise Hereford seedstock and commercial cattle. They also produce show lambs which are exhibited at many state, regional and national shows. Why are you willing to invest the time to serve CHB?

“It’s just a passion. I’ve spent 36 years in the meat industry, and I want to give something back to CHB and see it flourish in a way

“We’re growing brand loyalty and CHB’s quality offering, and we’re gaining a lot of new customers. And I believe we’re getting close to being able to describe CHB’s sustainability difference.”

“Growing market share in the face of a shrinking beef supply and unprecedented prices at retail and food service. Beef will have challenges at the current price point. As a producer, I love to see where prices are, but it will slow beef demand.”

“Personal contacts are usually one of the best ways to get a product placed in the market. Don’t underestimate the relationship you have with an influencer connected to a retailer or food service. Let us know who they are, and we can work to set up a meeting.

Delegate selection process information

A nominating committee selects a slate of AHA Board nominees. However, all active adult AHA members may provide input to the election process via their selection of state voting delegates. Active adult AHA members should receive information about how to nominate themselves or another active adult AHA member to serve as a voting delegate.

Take part in the Board election process by nominating the active AHA member(s) from your state who will represent you in electing the next AHA Board members. The process will begin April 1, when the AHA will send out an email to all eligible active adult members to ask them whether they would like to participate in the election of voting delegates electronically or by traditional mail. Eligible members must respond to that email by April 22, if they wish to participate electronically. If they wish to participate by traditional mail, they do not need to respond to the email. Eligible members are any adult AHA members who had at least one animal registered in the preceding calendar year where they were identified as the original owner of the animal.

On or before May 1, eligible members will receive information about how to nominate voting delegates. Replies will be due by May 31.

Hall of Fame/Hall of Merit nominations due June 1

Nominations for the AHA’s prestigious Hall of Fame and Hall of Merit are due June 1. Deserving

recipients for the 2024 induction will be honored at the AHA Annual Meeting and Conference in Kansas City, Mo., in October.

The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who have dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the breed. The Hall of Merit commends individuals who have greatly influenced the cattle industry.

Youth Entries opening for JNHE

Online entries will open in April for the 2024 VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 6-12 in Grand Island, Neb. Visit JrHereford.org information and enter online. Please note all entries must be completed online.

To accommodate the growing contests, JNHE participants must pay $5 to participate in showmanship and judging. All showmanship and judging contestants must pre-enter by June 1 and pay the entry fee at that time. JNHE participants must be members of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA).

Role models encourage you and give you the confidence needed to accomplish almost anything. Most of the time they do so without even realizing it.

When recalling my role models, several have worn the well-known maroon jacket and served the Hereford breed. At 11 years old,

I watched one of my role models be elected to serve on the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board of directors. In the summer of 2023, it was finally my turn — my turn to run for a position that I had talked and dreamed about for as long as I can remember.

I joined the board with three fellow “newbies,” and I can say, after a few short months of service, this has been one of the best decisions and experiences I have ever had.

In my election speech, I spoke of one of my role models — one of the people that paved the way and showed me the endless opportunities in the Hereford breed. I had grown up watching two sisters from my home state chase after their dreams of serving on the NJHA board of directors — Rossie and Mason Blinson.

The Blinson sisters served as my role models and were passionate and dedicated members of the Hereford family. For them, serving at the national level has always been a family affair. Mason says, “Running for the board was something that ran in my family. My dad was on the board when he was a junior, followed by my older sister. So, growing up, I always looked up to those people in the maroon jackets.”

For many it’s not simply a maroon jacket; it’s so much more than that. Running for the board was a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. I watched junior board members as they assisted with countless events throughout the Junior National Hereford Expo, and I noted the impact they had on other junior members. Being on the board, you learn what “Hereford family” truly means. It’s a home away from home — lifelong relationships and unbreakable bonds.

“I would recommend running for the board to any junior who has a passion for the Hereford industry,” Mason says.

While some NJHA members aspire to run for the junior board at a young age, it’s never too late to start planning and pursuing that goal. Maybe you’re a new NJHA member, or you’re just now considering the idea of serving on the national stage. It’s not too late to take the leap of faith and embark on a new journey. The experience and time serving on the board will open doors for you that you didn’t even know existed.

Being on the NJHA board of directors allows you to pursue your passion for Hereford cattle while encouraging others to become involved and forge their own path within the breed. While building leadership and professional skills, you also serve as a role model for generations to come. Serving on the junior board allows you to positively impact others, fuel passion for the breed and share your story.

There is no “right” time to decide you want to pursue a spot on the junior board. It’s never too late to decide to start serving as a role model for those who are next in line.

Carcass Quality Plus Lots More Performance Matters

Stunning results from the National Reference Sire Program.

The American Hereford Association (AHA) National Reference Sire Program (NRSP) — the only one of its kind — continues to open gates of new opportunity by identifying young sires that can positively affect the marketplace, giving seedstock and commercial breeders proof that Hereford genetics are profitable. Proven sires are also evaluated in this progeny test to further validate their performance values and provide more reliable data for comparing young sires to the Hereford population.

The following results are from the 2022-born calves at Olsen Ranches in Harrisburg, Neb. Their cow base used for the NRSP is a commercial Hereford herd. This is the Olsen’s 25th anniversary of providing phenomenal results. Breeders can make more accurate decisions, relative to traits of interest, because of AHA’s partnership with test herds like Olsen’s.

2022 results

These cattle absolutely blew the doors off when it comes to quality grade. The entire group of nearly 300 steers —

primarily straight Hereford — graded 50% Prime. You read it correctly — 50% Prime. The entire group graded 100% Choice and Prime. These are the most impressive results I’ve seen during my years with AHA. This is a major win for the breed and a great testament to Olsen Ranches’ steadfast pursuit to make the breed better. The results are also a compliment to the breeders behind these impressive sires.

Listed in Table 1 you will find the phenotypic averages by sire group for dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) and adjusted feed to gain (Adj. F:G). Table 1 only includes feed test data from the sires used on the cows, as feed intake from the heifer group was not available at the time of publication.

Table 2 includes complete performance results from birth to harvest by sire group. It is important to note that two distinct sire groups were analyzed separately, as the firstcalf heifers were managed differently from the mature cows; consequently, two separate contemporary groups were formed, and data should only be compared within group.

Table 3 showcases the sire ranks by the measured phenotypic trait during the test. There are three distinct categories (divisions) that are highlighted by different colors representing the top five sires in each category. The categories are Growth Total (BW, WW and YW), Feed Total (DMI, ADG and Adj. F:G) and Carcass Total (HCW, REA, BF and MARB). For objective evaluation, bulls were ranked for each trait based on the number of bulls in the test. The most favorable sire for a trait received a score of 1, the second most favorable sire earned a score of 2 and so on (golf score). Sums for each category were then calculated to identify the top-ranking sires within this test.

Served as the reference sire in the heifer group. N151 is a trait leader for CE, BW, SCF, MCE, MARB and all the indexes. His sire group ranked No. 1 for MARB in the heifer group.

SPF B413 Guaranteed 11G

Son of EFBeef BR Validated B413 and out of a Churchill Sensation 028X cow. The 11G sire group performed the best for end-product merit in the heifer group. He also offers SCF and UDDR in the top 2% of the breed.

Whitehawk PR2 Ring Master 396H

Son of Boyd 31Z Blueprint 6153 who offers a lot of maternal excellence with SC, SCF, UDDR and TEAT with the female indexes in the top 3% of the breed or higher. Plus, check out what his sire group did on MARB.

OR L574 Pioneer B990

This bull’s pedigree is the epitome of the Olsen program: L574, N162, Advance 3575N, Ram Dominator, A250 and SHF Progress P20. There’s no mistake he delivered as the spread bull in the heifer group. Elite top 2% CE and REA in the top 10% of the breed, plus many of the maternal traits in the top 20% of the breed or higher.

OR 3575 Husker N162 ET

N162 served as one of the reference sires in the cow group, and like before, his sire group put up some great figures. He is a trait leader for CE, BW, SC, MM, CW, REA, MARB and CHB.

Schu-Lar Conversion 501 ET

Conversion served as the other reference sire in the cow group. He is a trait leader for UDDR, TEAT, REA and MARB, while also ranking in the top 20% of the breed for DMI.

Stardance M9080 ET

A son of EFBeef BR Validated B413 and out of Churchill Lady 284Z ET, an Advance 3575 x Sensation cow. This bull’s sire group dominated for quality grade with 86% of them grading Prime in one of the toughest Olsen tests to date. M9080 is now the No. 1 bull in the breed for MARB, and all of his indexes are in the top 1%.

Spearhead 4 Star General

A homozygous son of EFBeef BR Validated B413 out of the Spearhead program whose sire group performed well at every weigh period. 4 Star General ranks in the top 1% of the breed for REA, MARB and all the indexes while also offering YW, SC, SCF and UDDR in the top 5 % of the breed.

Birdwell Vanguard 5022 9337

A homozygous polled son of EFBeef BR Validated B413 out of the famed 5022 Sensation daughter in the Birdwell program. A trait leader for BW, SCF, MM, MCE, UDDR, TEAT, REA, MARB and all the indexes. His sire group was the No. 1 DMI, REA and BF group in the cows.

3S G Man Sullivan 226Z 915S

A homozygous polled son of FTF Prime Product 226Z who follows in his sire’s footsteps, ranking in the top five for intake and in the growth test. G Man is really solid across the board in his profile with multiple traits ranking in the top 20% of the breed.

Whitehawk Arthur 240G ET

Arthur is a pigmented son of Innisfail WHR X651/723 4013 ET out of a strong daughter of NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y ET. His sire group found its way to the top of the feed period, ranking No. 1 for adjusted feed to gain. This bull’s sire group hit it out of the park with 53% of his progeny grading Prime.

Innisfail Trademark 1939 ET

Trademark left his mark on his sire group at Olsen’s as they ranked in the top five in the carcass test with 80% of them grading Prime. He’s another extra-dark pigmented son of EFBeef BR Validated B413 out of the famed Innisfail P230 T723 cow. As expected MARB is in the top 1% of the breed. UDDR, TEAT and all the indexes are also in the top 1%.

CMF 1720 Gold Rush 569G ET

Gold Rush delivered with his sire group ranking in the top five for both the growth and carcass test. His sire group just missed being in the top five of the feed test. Arguably, he was the most complete sire in the 2022 Olsen test. Gold Rush is a homozygous polled son of NJW 79Z Z311 Endure 173D ET and a trait leader for CE, WW, YW, SCF, TEAT, UDDR, CW, REA, MARB and all the indexes.

SHF Haviland F158 H028

Haviland, a homozygous polled son of SHF Foresight B413 F158, is a trait leader for CE, BW, SCF, MCE, UDDR, TEAT, CW, REA, MARB and all the indexes. His sire group went 73% Prime, living up to his excellent profile.

RST Final Print 0016

Final Print was a standout in the 2022 Olsen test. His sire group ranked in the top five for growth and the feed test. His sire group just missed being in the top five for carcass. His impressive profile held up and more. He is a trait leader for CE, BW, WW, YW, SC, SCF, MM, MCE, UDDR, TEAT, REA and all the indexes.

Wirruna Matty M288

Matty brings an incredible outcross opportunity to U.S. seedstock producers. ABS leased him from the Wirruna Poll Hereford Stud in Holbrook, Australia. You have to dig a long way to find U.S. genetics in his pedigree. His sire group topped the carcass test and finished in the top five in the growth test. Progeny were among the heaviest at every weigh period and they graded 57% prime. He is homozygous polled and in the top 1% for CW.

Churchill Roughneck 0280H ET

Roughneck is a Churchill Rough Rider 719E son out of Churchill W4 Lady 770E, a 1321 x Bakken cow from the Churchill program. His sire group ranked in the top five for the feed test and his calves were light at birth. Roughneck is horned bull who is a definite calving ease option and his SC, MM, MCE, MCW, UDDR, TEAT rank in the 10% of the breed.

EFBeef A250 Tested H627 ET

A homozygous polled son of EFBeef X651 Tested A250 who is balanced in his genetic profile across the board. His sire group ranked top for average daily gain and was in the top five for the feed test.

2,541 Dams of Distinction Honored

The Dams of Distinction program recognizes superior cows in the breed and the cattle producers who manage them based on data submitted to the American Hereford Association (AHA). Efficient, fertile and productive females are the foundation of the most successful cow herds.

With 375 cows recognized in 2023, South Dakota had the most dams honored. A list of the top 20 states and top 20 breeders who have females recognized follows.

A cow receiving the Dam of Distinction honor meets the highest standards of commercial cattle production. The cow must do her job, but her owner must also manage the herd correctly to give her the opportunity to excel.

Only a few active cows are recognized. All females have the potential to be a Dam of Distinction, but only a small percentage fit the job description of an ideal cow year in and year out. For more information about the Dams of Distinction Program, visit Hereford.org, hover on “Genetics” and select “Recognition Programs.” Females attaining the Dam of Distinction status are recognized with “DOD” after their names on the AHA website.

To be honored as a 2023 Dam of Distinction, a cow must have:

1) Weaned a calf born since Jan. 1, 2022.

2) Produced at least three calves.

4) H ad an interval between the first and second calves of no greater than 400 days. In addition, a 370-day calving interval must have been maintained after her second calf. The longer initial calving interval allows breeders to calve 2-year-old heifers prior to the mature cow herd.

5) H ad weaning records submitted to the AHA Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) program for every calf produced that was born before June 30, 2023.

6) H ad a progeny average 205-day adjusted weaning weight ratio of at least 105.

The Texas Hereford Association held its 54th Annual Powerhouse Sale in conjunction with the FWSS. Texas Hereford breeders consigned groups of commercial black baldy and Hereford females – with 130 head grossing $295,000. W4 Ranch, Morgan, Texas, won both grand and reserve pens, securing their spots atop the sale order for the powerful offering of baldy females. Ten Hereford cow-calf pairs with black baldy calves at side from W4 Ranch topped the sale, selling for $3,900 per pair.

Stepping into Sustainability Six Pillars of Climate Conversations

“Ag-vocate” with climate-agriculture perspectives this Earth Day.

April is the month for International Earth Day, an event first held April 22, 1970. Today, Earth Day is a globally acknowledged event and environmental movement, which includes a full range of programs and activities run by EarthDay.org. Without question, Earth Day is every day for those of us in agriculture. However, given the incredible global focus on climate and sustainability, it’s worth considering the elements of Earth Day that should be part of our own conversation.

Six pillars of agricultureclimate conversations

As part of my consulting practice, I run a group called IN-CLIMATE, which consists of agricultural supply chain companies and trade groups. Last year, we decided to tackle this question: “What is the climate conversation for our industry?” We came up with the following six areas. In some ways, I believe each one of these affects beef producers and can have a positive opportunity for your businesses as well.

No. 1 - Carbon credit markets and carbon sequestration:

Today’s emerging voluntary carbon markets are the entry point for many producers when it comes to sustainability. But sequestering carbon with plants is only part of the solution. We are also hearing a lot about carbon capture and storage and how those projects may affect landowners and rural areas. There are opportunities for beef producers and row crop farmers.

No. 2 - Sustainability and conservation:

Sustainability and conservation practices in agriculture are nearly as old as time, and the original

movement to things like no-till, cover crops and rotational grazing is more than 40 years old. Yet, these efforts are hitting an incredible stride and coming more into the mainstream as incentive programs now exist to convert new producers into these practices.

No. 3 - Renewable energy and energy transition:

Farmers are doing more with renewables now than ever before, whether putting in an on-farm solar installation for energy savings or by participating in large-scale community projects. Yet, no topic is more divisive than large scale solar and wind. Some want it in rural areas, and some ardently oppose. The dialog is important as we collectively decide what is the best use of land — once you take it out of production, it rarely, if ever, goes back.

No. 4 - Advanced biofuels and renewable fuels:

The first renewable fuels like biodiesel and ethanol are now mature technologies that are widely adopted, yet still have incredible merit. Today, however, massive growth is expected in advanced bio technologies, from hydrogen, additional renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel and more. Agricultural products remain a viable feedstock and may include a growing market for animal fats and livestock waste as a source of fuel.

No. 5 - Green finance and climate smart agriculture:

Financing for projects, whether coming from grants or private sources, is a factor in any new technology taking flight. Yet,

navigating these sources and the implications of using them takes time and consideration. The phrase ‘climate smart’ is overall not well regarded by the livestock and row crop producers that we polled in the fall of 2023; yet programs with the climate smart moniker will abound in the next Farm Bill.

No. 6 - Consumer pressures and public perception:

Changing cultural norms are partial drivers for the incredible movement in ESG (environmental, social and governance) programing and investing. But does the general public really care if the beef they buy is carbon neutral or their corn chips are deemed zero-emission? The answers might surprise you. Typically, most consumers don’t want to pay more for these labels or would pay only slightly more.  So, where does the pressure to add these policies really come from if research shows us most consumers won’t pay for the difference? It’s all part of the continuing conversation.  How does your farm or ranch define Earth Day? The answer is as unique and important as your own operation’s impact and commitment to leaving a sustainable legacy.

Wayne Owen Brillhart, 82, Musselshell, Mont., passed Feb. 9.

We bid farewell to Wayne one week after his 82nd birthday, at St. Vincent Hospital due to complications from surgery.

Wayne was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Orrville, Ohio, to Ross and Irene Clapper Brillhart.

Wayne was the middle child of six children. In 1946 at the age of 4, his family moved to Montana to the Three Mile area of the Bitterroot Valley. A couple of years later his dad purchased a ranch in Lolo, Mont., where he spent the next 20 years. He attended Lolo grade school, graduated from Missoula County High and then on to Northern Montana College in Havre, Mont. He graduated in farm and ranch management. This is where he met his wife, Shirlee Cure; they were married in 1963. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2023.

While growing up on the Lolo Ranch, Wayne was active in rodeo, wrestling, 4-H and FFA. He showed Hereford cattle at the Missoula County Fair. His love for Hereford cattle started at a very young age.

After finishing college, Wayne and Shirlee worked with the Barbours on the Monture Hereford Ranch in Ovando, Mont., and another rancher who had ranches in the Bitterroot Valley and North Dakota. Wayne was responsible for getting the bulls ready for the Top Cut Sale in Missoula. At that time, the “Top Cut” Sale was the largest Hereford sale between Denver and Calgary — selling over 500 head of Hereford bulls. It was during this period that their two sons were born, whom he named Winston and Bentley.

In 1968, Wayne and Shirlee, sons Winston and Ben, his brother Charles and his parents purchased a ranch at Musselshell. It became known as the Brillhart Ranch Co.

The registered Hereford cattle herd was started by Wayne’s dad, Ross, in the mid-1950s with some cows he bought in a dispersion sale at the Missoula Stockyards. His dad also purchased the first herd bull from Fred and Olive Porch of the Three Mile Hereford Ranch (Beau Donald breeding). Wayne and his older brother, Charles, then purchased another herd bull from Mario and Mary Feronato, who were prominent Hereford breeders in the Bitterroot Valley. Females were also purchased from Wayne B. Hill, Edminston Land and Cattle and a semi-load of cows from Oliver Shipp of Glasgow, Mont.

In 1990, Jim Brown, Wayne Waarvick and Wayne, with the assistance from Leo McDonnell Sr., started the Big County Hereford Breeders Sale, held at Midland Bull Test. Due to Wayne’s health issues, the ranch was sold in 2015, and the last sale was in 2016.

Wayne served as president and vice president of the Musselshell Valley Stockgrowers. He served on the following boards: Musselshell Grade School, Roundup High School, DelphiaMelstone Canal Users, Zion Lutheran Church, Montana Hereford Association, in addition to being a beef leader for the Hawk Creek 4-H Club and member of the Montana Stockgrowers Association, American Hereford Association (AHA), National Cattlemen’s Beef Association and R-CALF USA. In 2007, the Montana Hereford Association honored Wayne as Hereford Person of the Year.

“Now when I am dead and gone and you hang my old worn tack, I want you to remember I never sold my saddle and I never bred ’em black,” Wayne said.

Despite Wayne’s health issues, the couple traveled all the back roads near and far and checked off places on their bucket list since retirement in 2015. He loved to travel when he could no longer raise his beloved Herefords. Wayne believed in God, family and Herefords. He had a great sense of humor; he

delighted in pulling pranks on family and friends.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Irene; brother, Charles; and sister, Rita.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Shirlee; sons: Winston (Michele) Brillhart of Luxembourg, Europe, and grandson, Kai Brillhart of Luxembourg; Bentley Brillhart, Huntley, Mont.; sisters: Louella (John) Lokemoen of Jamestown, N.D., Maxine Vink, of Missoula, Mont., and Thelma (Jerrome) Cole of Musselshell; and 14 nephews and nieces.

Mary Jane Moser, 83, Effingham, Kan., passed Feb. 10.

She was born May 7, 1940, in Horton, Kan., the daughter of William R. and Mary A. (Gordon) Warren.

Mary Jane attended Willow Grove School and graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1958. She attended St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, Mo., and earned her professional nursing diploma in 1961.

She began her career working as a registered nurse for Hallmark Cards in Topeka, Kan., and Lawrence, Kan. Mary Jane spent much of her professional life caring for the senior population at Tri-County Manor in Horton and Cray Manor in Atchison, Kan., along with working as a home health nurse. Near the end of her career, she shared her nursing expertise by teaching certified nurse’s aide and medication aide classes at the Northeast Kansas Technical College in Atchison.

Caregiving came naturally to her professionally but also to her friends and family. She loved her kids and grandkids deeply. She always made sure to end every phone call or visit with an “I love you,” and her family never doubted those words. She cherished spending time with

them traveling and watching her grandchildren in their activities. She and her husband, Lowell, were avid Kansas State University football fans and attended many bowl games. Over the years she also enjoyed caring for her dogs, especially her beloved coonhound, Gracie, who came to her as a stray and was a special companion in her senior years.

She was a member of the Effingham Union Church and belonged to the Mary-Martha Circle. She also enjoyed playing Bingo and Bunco with her friends at the Town and Country Senior Center. She was fun and quirky with a great sense of humor.

She married Lowell A. Moser on June 7, 1964, in Hiawatha, Kan., and he preceded her in death in 2016. She is survived by a son, Dan (Lisa) Moser of Westmoreland, Kan., and a daughter, Kristi (Rob) Curley of Spokane, Wash.; three grandchildren, Justin Moser and Ryan Moser, both of Overland Park, Kan., and Allison Moser of Westmoreland; one sister, Martha Michaels of Cantonment, Fla.; and two sisters-in-law, Annette Larson of Lawrence, and Jane (Bill) Fox of Overbrook.

Maerli, 74, Cuba, Mo., passed Feb. 15.

William F. “Bill” Maerli, a beloved member of the Cuba, Mo., community was born on March 20, 1949, in St. Louis, Mo., to Nicholas and Marie (Burger) Maerli. Bill lived a life filled with dedication and service to those around him.

Midwest Cattle Service for a decade. His passion for nurturing young minds was demonstrated through his involvement with the Crawford County Fair and 4-H clubs, where he mentored numerous youths, particularly those in the Jakes Prairie 4-H Club.

In addition to his professional achievements, Bill served on the board of directors for the Crawford County Soil and Water District. He was a lifelong member of the AHA, Missouri Show Me Chapter and Livestock Super International. Bill’s dedication to conservation was recognized when he received the Volunteer Conservationist of the Year award for outstanding leadership in Crawford County.

May his legacy of compassion and dedication resonate within all those whose lives he touched.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Marie (Burger) Maerli; brother, James Maerli; and infant sister, Mary Maerli.

Those who are left to cherish his memory and continue his legacy are his brother, Paul (Pat) Maerli of Cuba; sister, Veronica (Butch) Vollmer of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; sister-in-law, Pat Maerli of St. Louis, Mo.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends.

Milton G. Thomas, Ph.D., 58, Weesatche, Texas, passed Feb. 15.

Milton was born in Lubbock, Texas, to Charles G. and Ruby Peggram Thomas on Dec. 23, 1965.

Bill’s commitment to education was evident as he graduated from Cuba High School with the class of 1967 and furthered his studies at Missouri State University. His sense of duty led him to serve in the Missouri National Guard for six years.

A prominent figure in the agricultural world, Bill was wellknown as a farmer, cattleman, master conservationist and auctioneer for livestock sales and car auctions for 35 years. Together with his good friend Jim Reed, Bill owned and operated

Columbia (Mizzou). He also earned a doctorate in 1994 in reproductive physiology from Texas A&M University. After completing his doctorate, Dr. Thomas completed his post-doctoral research at the University of Missouri and the University of Texas Institute of Biotechnology–Center for Molecular Medicine.

Dr. Thomas spent 15 years in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at New Mexico State University (NMSU), serving as the Gerald Thomas Chair in Food Production and Natural Resources.

He joined Colorado State University (CSU), in December 2011 as a professor and John E. Rouse Chair of Beef Cattle Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Animal Sciences.

In 2022, Dr. Thomas returned to his alma mater at Texas A&M AgriLife beef cattle research program at the Beeville location, working in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and his colleague Jamie Foster, Ph.D., AgriLife Research forage agronomist in Beeville. The research program at the AgriLife research station in Beeville focused on beef systems — combining beef reproduction with extensive grassland and forage agronomy work to learn more about the grazing patterns of cattle in South Texas, sub-tropical conditions.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Dora Vasquez Thomas; sons, Joshua Glen (Crystal) Thomas of Firestone, Colo., and John (Caitlin) Flores of Victoria, Texas; his father, Charles G. Thomas of Amarillo, Texas; sisters, Donna Truitt of Tennessee, and Julie Loudon of Australia; and one precious grandchild, Kamille Grace Flores of Victoria.

Dr. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science in 1988 in animal science and a Master of Science in 1990 in dairy science-reproductive physiology, both from the University of Missouri,

His research collaborations at NMSU and CSU took him to Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Brazil before he returned to his Texas roots and moved to his family’s cattle ranch in Goliad County.

In addition to beef cattle improvement research, Dr. Thomas was most passionate about mentoring students and helping others accomplish their goals. He was a research advisor and mentor for two Postdoc, 16 Ph.Ds., 16 M.S., and more than 40 undergraduate students.

Dr. Thomas published 116 Peer-Reviewed Journals, two textbook chapters, 236 abstracts, and countless other publications, reviews and presentations.

Dr. Thomas will be greatly missed in the animal science community, but mostly by his family.

James “Jim” Dale Bellis, 67, Aurora, Mo., passed March 2.

After a decade-long battle with cancer, Jim was lovingly cared for and surrounded by his wife and children at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., until his final breath.

Jim was born in Aurora on March 20, 1956, to Dale and Dorothy Bellis. He was the oldest of three children, followed by his brother, Bob, and sister, Julie. They were brought up on the family farm raising cattle and from an early age, agriculture became one of the passions of Jim’s life. Active in FFA, he served as a chapter president, area president and state secretary. He was mentored by his agriculture teacher, Mr. Jim Golding, who introduced Jim to Hereford cattle. Mr. Golding helped him pick out his first Hereford that started his herd, and empowered Jim to go to college to become an agriculture teacher. Jim would become a mentor to many aspiring agriculture students.

Jim attended Mizzou, where he studied to be an agriculture teacher. He worked at Wheaton and Aurora High Schools as an agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. Then, he served as the district supervisor of agriculture education with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. After retiring from the state, he was hired as the assistant to the Dean of the College of Agriculture at Missouri State University (MSU). He took deep pride in helping transform the MSU Department of Agriculture into the College of Agriculture and in his work to recruit and mentor students in agriculture.

From purchasing his first Hereford heifer as an SAE project to being one of the pioneers of utilizing expected progeny differences (EPDs) in the genetic selection of his Hereford herd, his farming accomplishments include receiving the Missouri Hereford Breeder of the Year award, serving on the AHA Board of Directors and being inducted into the Missouri Hereford Association’s Hall of Fame.

Jim was deeply devoted to his church, Orange Cumberland Presbyterian, where he attended church all his life. As a young child, he committed his life to the Lord. He was baptized in Honey Creek, going on to serve the church by playing the piano and as an elder, serving multiple times as a delegate from Missouri Presbytery to the Cumberland Presbyterian General Assembly. Jim met his wife, Carla, at Camp Cumberland during Convocation when he was in college, and she was a junior in high school. They were married Aug. 12, 1978, and had three children — Jamie, Joanna and Jonathan — who were raised on the farm and in Christian faith. Jim was a proud grandpa to Harper James, Ivee Mae, Nora Ellis and Carson Dale.

Among the many gifts Jim passed on to his family is his love for music, which he would share every chance he got. He played the trumpet in the marching band in both high school and college. He and Carla played the piano together each Sunday at their church. He especially loved to listen to and sing southern gospel music, and one of his greatest joys was singing with his family and finding the perfect harmonies. Silly songs that he once sang to his own children have now been passed on to his grandchildren, ensuring that Jim’s legacy will continue to be sung by those who follow him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Dorothy Bellis. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carla Bellis; his children: Jamie (Kevin) Johansen, Joanna (Neal) Wilkinson and Jonathon Bellis; four grandchildren: Harper and Ivee Johansen, and Nora and Carson Wilkinson; his brother, Bob (Sharon) Bellis; his sister, Julie (Tony) Keatts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Bellis will continue to be here by the owl because, “The owl is a time-honored emblem of knowledge and wisdom.” His advice will be remembered from time to time as the need arises because it was always based on true knowledge and ripened with wisdom.

Goehring, Rife inducted into Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame

Bill Goehring of Libertyville, Iowa, and Jack Rife of Wilton, Iowa, are the newest members of the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame, which honors those who have made a significant impact on the breed in the state. They were inducted during the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association (IHBA) banquet at the Iowa Beef Expo.

Bill Goehring purchased his first Hereford heifer when he was 9 years old. Goehring Herefords was officially founded in 1973, and the entire family was involved. Bill and his sister, Debbie, served on the state’s junior board, and their parents were junior advisors. In 1984, Bill served on the National Junior Polled Hereford Council, which foreshadowed his influence on the breed.

Bill has been actively involved with the Iowa Beef Council, both the National and Iowa Livestock Marketing Associations, the Iowa Polled Hereford and Iowa Hereford Breeders Associations. Recently he finished his term with the AHA Board of Directors after retiring as president last October.

Today, Goehring Herefords consists of 200 registered cows and 400 commercial cows. Each year, they sell 100 registered heifers and 450 black and black-whiteface heifers in their annual sale, in addition to backgrounding 800-1,000 steers, finishing 500 cattle and marketing around 80 Hereford bulls private-treaty.

The Goehring family also works together to grow Keosauqua Sales Company, their livestock auction. For

25 years, Bill has sold cattle at the weekly sale, which draws livestock of all species from a 100-mile radius. While serving as chair of the AHA may be Bill’s biggest professional accomplishment, he is most proud that he, his wife, Becky, and their four sons are all involved in the family’s sale barn and livestock operation.

Jack Rife and his father purchased a bred Hereford cow with a heifer calf at side, in 1957. After the cow gave birth to another heifer calf, Jack’s new herd — and his FFA project — served as the start of Rife Hereford Farms.

Kube honored by Virginia Hereford Association

Jack has long been a supporter of Hereford youth. He and his wife, Sharon, were the second advisors for the Iowa Junior Hereford Association in the early-’70s. No stranger to service, Jack was an Iowa State Senator from 1982 to 2002 and minority leader for five years. He was also a regional representative for Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao during five years of the George W. Bush administration. His ties secured George H.W. Bush to speak at a local agricultural banquet.

In 1996, he was able to use his political clout to help host the Junior National Polled Hereford Show in Des Moines, Iowa. With the help of a state senator seeking funding for the National Junior Angus Show, Jack secured a $5,000 allocation of state funds for the junior national in a senate bill.

Rife Hereford Farms’ name was changed to R&R Cattle Co. when son, Charly, joined the operation. Today, they have more than 80 registered cows, and Jack and Sharon enjoy watching their

The Virginia Hereford Association recently recognized Robert “Bob” Kube for his many years of dedication to the Hereford breed. Bob resides in Broad Run, Va., with his wife, Lucy. They own and operate Fauquier Farm, which has been in business for more than 70 years and are AHA lifetime members. Bob and Lucy have two children, Kurt Kube and Kim Crowe, and five grandkids: Marshall, Drake, Rachel, Katie and Brooke.

Bob Kube served on the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) board for several years. HYFA’s Fauquier Farms scholarship is a $2,500 scholarship that is awarded each fall to Hereford youth in honor of Bob and Lucy’s commitment to future generations. Virginia Hereford secretary, Cameron Kolinski says, “Bob Kube has a servant’s heart. His passion for youth is contagious. I am forever grateful for being selected as a two-time recipient of the Fauquier Farms scholarship.”

No other candidate is more deserving of this honor from the Virginia Hereford Association and its members thank Mr. Kube for his lifelong dedication to the Hereford breed, the people and most importantly the Hereford youth.
