GENETIC PROGRESS

A
n Artificial Insemination (AI) program is needed to remain competitive in a challenging commercial and seedstock market and to improve traits of economic importance in individual herds. It is the duty of a seedstock breeder to produce the type of cattle that will make the commercial industry more profitable, and it is equally as important to produce replacement females that are well documented and will provide genetic improvement. AI allows breeders to select sires that are proven and reliable for all traits of importance. In 2000, the American Hereford Association (AHA) implemented Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) and this combined with breeder’s commitment to data collection, the development of new traits and $ Indexes, genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPD) and the growth of both AI and embryo transfer (ET) has allowed the Hereford breed to make genetic progress that is unprecedented. Since 2003, AI use in the Hereford breed has grown by 82% and nearly 32% of the calves recorded in 2014 were born by AI sires. In addition, nearly three times as many calves are produced through ET since 2003. This provides for more consistency, quicker generational turns and has allowed AHA members to offer genetics that make a real difference in commercial industry.
As you will notice in the table below, genetic trends for the four $ Indexes have seen a steady positive climb during this growth in AI use within the seedstock industry. With all of this progress in the seedstock business, commercial Hereford semen sales have also increased. According to the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB), domestic Hereford semen sales in 2015 increased 24% in the last year and have increased by 179% since 2006.
Implementing an AI program gives breeders access to sires that are proven and strong in the areas that need to be protected within herds. The ability for breeders to make genetic selections gives us control of our breeding programs and makes us unique from other protein production, but with this comes the responsibility to make sound decisions. Along with breeding decisions, a breeder must also implement sound management practices including the proper handling of semen, a sound health and nutritional program and proper heat detection or timed breeding. Genetic progress is in your hands. Use the tools and genetics that are available to make progress in the areas of economic relevance.
