Renee Bevis
Renee Bevis, originally Renee Anderson, grew up on a wheat farm in North Dakota, where she and her sister Ruthie spent their early years reading, observing insects, and exploring nature. With no internet or library resources, Renee developed a lifelong curiosity about the natural world, which has been rekindled by Butterfly Pavilion.
In school, she discovered a love for music and eventually pursued a practical career in nursing, dedicating 46 years to the field, including running her own Child Care Health Consultation business. Renee is the proud mother of Bill, a computer scientist, and Betsy, an archaeologist, and she is a grandmother to Charlotte and Eden. Although leaving the Midwest was difficult, she moved to Denver eight years ago, where she now calls home.
Renee and Richard met on a blind date in their 40s, dated for 11 years, and then got married. They enjoy barbershop harmony, wine tasting, world travel, and especially the new friendships and learning experiences brought into their lives by Butterfly Pavilion.

Original Painting by David Martinez

“Journey to Mictlan” 36’’x48” acrylic on canvas
This painting, “Journey to Mictlan” is based on and inspired by Mexican (Aztec) religious belief of the afterlife. It is a painting of the Mexican (Aztec) Goddess Mictēcacihuātl the goddess of death or “Lady of the Dead.” Mictēcacihuātl rules the underworld with her husband Mictlantecuhtli. Her job is to watch over the bones of the dead as the souls of the deceased make their way to the afterlife. The Mexican (Aztec) believe the souls of the departed are carried to the afterlife on the wings of the butterflies. As Mexico was colonized by the Spanish, the Mexican (Aztec) religious belief was fused with Catholicism and evolved into Dia De Muertos or Day of the Dead. Mictecacihuatl is shown wearing beautiful traditional Mexican shawl and is adorned with a crown of Cempasuchils (Marigolds) which is the traditional flower used to this day in Dia de Muertos.

Peruvian Butterfly Shadowbox
Butterflies represent transformation and happiness, bring color to life and remind us to enjoy the “dance of life.” These butterflies are raised in butterfly farms in the Amazon jungle. Growing big and beautiful, they live out the entirety of their natural lives. Once their lifecycle is complete, they’re collected by the butterfly farmers and placed in frames by local artisans. These frames create a sustainable eco-system and provide fair income for the artisans and their families. Each frame is labeled by a licensed biologist with the scientific name of the butterflies. All the butterflies used in these frames are all in the common butterfly family and are NOT endangered species. The frames look best when hung near natural light, but it is recommended to keep them out of direct sunlight and/or moist environments.
