Leadership Coaching Month 2
Discerning Threats & Opportunities
Temperature Check
Before we jump into our agenda for today, let’s take a moment to check in with each other. On a scale of 1 (horrible) to 5 (incredible), how are you feeling?
Do you want to continue with the session or schedule another time?
Coaching Agreements
Now, let’s quickly review and discuss The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Which agreement is most important to you today? Why?
Are there other agreements that we should add to guide today’s coaching session?

Candace’s “Opportunity”
Candace, an African A i 11th grade student fro low-income commun United States, was no by her math teacher t a rigorous STEAM (sci technology, engineer and mathematics) pro Harvard University.
Everyone keeps telling Candace that she should be excited about the opportunity, especially since there’s no financial cost to Candace or her family. However, Candace is terrified. This doesn’t feel like an “opportunity” to her. Candace is still unsure of whether or not she should participate in the program.
Why might Candace be scared to attend the program?

Threats & Opportunities
There are a number of valid reasons why Candace might be scared to attend the program, including a fear of experiencing the following things throughout the program:
● racism & stereotypes (e.g. gender-based, class-based, etc.)
● lack of support or understanding
● guilt from not being able to help out at home
● her opinions/contributions being undervalued or ignored
The program could be both an opportunity and a threat to Candace’s leadership identity.
Discuss: Review the definitions of threat and opportunity. In what ways could the STEAM program be an opportunity to Candace? In what ways could it be a threat to her leadership identity?

Opportunities, Threats, & Decisions
● Do you have any upcoming (or past) opportunities that could be considered both a threat and opportunity?
○ What makes them a threat?
○ What makes them an opportunity?
● What types of opportunities will help you meet your current goals? What threats should you consider?
● Head, Heart, & Gut: How do you decide whether or not you should pursue an opportunity?
○ Which do you use most often: your head (intellect), your heart (feelings), or your gut (intuition)?
○ How could you get better at using all three?
