This is Butler University’s 168th Spring Commencement Exercises.

A MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT

Congratulations on your graduation from Butler University!

On behalf of the Butler University community, I would like to congratulate each one of our accomplished graduates. I commend you for the hard work, dedication, and perseverance that have brought you here today. We are proud of you, and we are grateful to have had you as members of our campus community. All of you—through your unique talents and strengths—have made Butler a better place.

I would like to recognize the parents and family members of our graduates. Your guidance and support have made all the difference for today’s diploma recipients. They have earned this honor, in large part, because of you. We share in your joy as you celebrate this milestone in their lives.

I also want to thank our talented faculty and staff members. Because of your dedication, our graduates are now ready to embrace the exciting opportunities and challenges ahead. They have received an exceptional education in a vibrant learning environment, and they are prepared to become future mentors, critical thinkers, and agents for change.

Graduates, “The Butler Way”—or that special manner in which we all pursue excellence in our own areas of talent for the greater good of our communities and society—is now a part of who you are. As new alumni, you personify the Butler spirit of achievement, and it speaks volumes about the outstanding people you are and the great things you will do.

The Butler family will always welcome you back home, and we hope you will visit us often.

ANTHEM

The Road Home

by

by

Tell me, where is the road I can call my own, That I left, that I lost, So long ago?

All these years I have wandered, Oh, when will I know There’s a way, there’s a road That will lead me home?

After wind, after rain, When dark is done. As I wake from a dream In the gold of day, Through the air there’s a calling From far away, There’s a voice I can hear That will lead me home. Rise up, follow me, Come away, is the call, With the love in your heart As the only song; There is no such beauty As where you belong; Rise up, follow me, I will lead you home.

ALMA MATER

In the gallery of memories There are pictures bright and fair, And I find that dear old Butler Is the brightest one that’s there. Alma Mater, how we love thee, With a love that ne’er shall fade.

And we feel we owe a debt to thee That never can be paid.

COMMENCEMENT SYMBOLS

THE MACE

The mace symbolizes the University’s governing authority and is present only when the President and members of the board of trustees are in attendance at academic ceremonies, signifying that the proceedings have official sanction. The hand-carved mace incorporates the features of the Butler seal in a symbolic creation that captures the strength and character of Butler University. Carved from Indiana walnut, the mace includes the torch, which symbolizes light and learning; the name of the University; its location; year of founding; and a ring of figures representing each college. The chief faculty marshal uses the mace to open and close academic ceremonies.

GONFALONS

The Butler University gonfalons are modeled on processional banners that originated in the medieval states of Italy. Butler’s six gonfalons represent the schools that comprise Butler University: College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Lacy School of Business, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Jordan College of the Arts, and College of Communication.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN of OFFICE

The chain of office symbolizes the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. In 1962 the Alumni Association gifted the original chain of office to the University. In December 2012, a new chain was commissioned as a gift to the University by Trustee Gary D. Butkus ’88 and College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences faculty member Jason T. Range JD PhD. The silver chain contains the same college symbols as the mace and bears the names of the distinguished persons who have served as presidents of Butler University. Suspended from the chain is the University seal encased in laurel, symbolizing the triumph of learning.

ACADEMIC SYMBOLISM

The use of caps, gowns, and hoods in commencement ceremonies has been continuous since colonial times. The custom descends from the Middle Ages, when education was a function of religious organizations. Today’s academic garb resembles medieval clothing worn by the clergy. Caps were a necessity in cold churches; capes with attached hoods were also needed for warmth.

The color, trimming, and lining of the hoods worn in commencement ceremonies indicate the school from which a degree was granted. Generally, hoods increase in size from the bachelor’s hood to the doctoral’s.

At Butler, the color of the tassel on a graduate’s cap indicates the discipline studied. The color code is as follows:

Black: Associate Degree Candidates from any discipline

Brown: Art + Design, Arts Administration, Creative Writing, Dance, Dance Arts Administration, Dance Pedagogy, Dance Performance, Theatre

Citron: Anthropology, Anthropology and Psychology, Criminology, Criminology and Psychology, Sociology, Sociology and Criminology, Sociology and Psychology

Copper: Economics

Dark blue: Peace and Conflict Studies, Philosophy, Philosophy and Psychology, Philosophy and Religion, Political Science, Political Science and Psychology

Drab: Accounting, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Finance, International Business, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Risk Management and Insurance

The regalia worn by the Butler Board of Trustees at the University Commencement Ceremony and College Celebrations was made by a generous donation by Gary Butkus ’88, a member of the board, debuted for the first time at the 2023 Commencement weekend. We are exceedingly grateful for Gary’s continued support, which will serve to enrich Butler’s signature celebration of academic achievement.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENTS

In selecting honorary degree recipients, Butler University strives to celebrate individuals whose life and work reflect the University’s core values and who have made tremendous accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, creativity, and public service, therefore significantly benefiting or enriching a particular group or enhancing our larger society.

Bruce Arick

Butler University is honored to recognize Bruce Arick, an esteemed leader whose three-decade tenure at Butler has shaped the University’s financial health, infrastructure, and long-term success. Upon retiring in early 2025 as the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration, Arick’s steady leadership, financial stewardship, and dedication to Butler’s mission have left an indelible mark on the institution.

Arick first joined Butler in 1989, beginning a career that would span more than 30 years of transformational impact. He played a pivotal role in shaping the University’s physical and financial landscape, overseeing projects that modernized and expanded Butler’s campus while maintaining its strong fiscal foundation. His work included guiding major capital projects, financial strategies, and campus master planning—initiatives that have significantly enhanced the Butler student experience.

One of his most notable contributions was his instrumental role in the creation of Founder’s College, an initiative that expanded access to Butler’s high-quality education while fostering a more diverse and inclusive learning environment. His firm dedication to equity and inclusion has ensured that Butler’s commitment to accessibility continues to grow.

Beyond his financial and administrative expertise, Arick is known for his integrity, strategic foresight, and commitment to excellence. His leadership has fostered a culture of transparency, collaboration, and long-term sustainability, allowing Butler to thrive even in times of economic uncertainty.

Arick’s legacy at Butler is one of service, stewardship, and impact. His contributions will continue to shape Butler’s trajectory for generations to come. The University proudly honors Bruce Arick for his extraordinary service and dedication to Butler’s mission, students, and community.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Jean McAnulty Smith ’65

Butler University proudly recognizes Jean McAnulty Smith ’65, a trailblazing journalist, dedicated civic leader, and champion of education and philanthropy. Over a career spanning several decades, she has made lasting contributions to the media, banking, philanthropy, and community engagement, all while serving as a passionate advocate for equity, inclusion, and student success.

A proud Butler alumna, Smith earned her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1965. She became the first Black woman to serve as Press Secretary for an Indiana Governor, a milestone that garnered national recognition. She also worked as a reporter for the Indianapolis Star, a Vice President at Indiana National Bank, and a Program Director at Lilly Endowment Inc, where she led transformative funding initiatives supporting clergy and community development.

Her commitment to service and education extends far beyond her professional career. Smith served as Butler’s first Black trustee (1981–1993) and later as a Trustee Emerita, providing visionary leadership and advocacy for students and faculty alike. Her impact on Butler continues through the Reverend Jean McAnulty Smith Scholarship, which she established to support firstgeneration Black women pursuing higher education.

In recognition of her decades of civic engagement, Smith has received numerous accolades, including two Sagamore of the Wabash awards, the Madame C.J. Walker Award, and induction into The Indiana Academy. She has also served on the boards of Christian Theological Seminary, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis, the Center for Leadership Development, and The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, among many others.

Smith’s lifelong dedication to education, mentorship, and philanthropy has uplifted countless individuals and communities. Through her pioneering leadership, she has opened doors for future generations, inspired positive change, and reinforced the values of service and excellence that define Butler University.

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT

Charles DeBow Jr. ’48, MS ’53

Butler University is proud to honor Charles Henry DeBow Jr. ’48, a distinguished alumnus, pioneering aviator, decorated military veteran, and dedicated educator whose courage, perseverance, and service exemplify the University’s highest ideals.

Born in Indianapolis in 1918, DeBow made history in 1942 as one of the first five Tuskegee Airmen to complete training and become an official U.S. Army Air Force pilot. As commander of the 301st Fighter Squadron, he flew 52 combat missions in World War II, including in the historic D-Day operations. Facing both racism and wartime dangers, he carried out his service with extraordinary bravery, becoming a symbol of determination and excellence for generations to come.

After the war, DeBow returned to Indianapolis and earned his bachelor’s degree from Butler University, followed by master’s degrees from both Butler University and Indiana University. He dedicated the remainder of his career to education and community service, teaching in Indianapolis Public Schools and later at Thomas Carr Howe High School, where he became the school’s first Black faculty member.

This long-standing tradition represents the Butler community’s fond farewell, and the return of graduates to their families and to the larger communities in which they are now more prepared to work and live.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Tara Lineweaver ’91

Tara Lineweaver is currently the Wesley A. Dunn Professor of Psychology, the Director of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience program, and a Distinguished Faculty Member at Butler University. A 1991 Butler University alumna with Bachelor’s degrees in Arts Administration and Psychology and a minor in Business Administration, Dr. Lineweaver earned her master’s degree in Experimental Psychology with an emphasis in Cognitive Aging from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She earned her PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology from the San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego joint doctoral program in 1999, after completing an internship at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Postdoctoral training followed with two years on staff as a Clinical Associate at the Cleveland Clinic. She then returned to Butler in 2003 to join the faculty of the Psychology Department.

Lineweaver’s expertise includes healthy aging, neurodegenerative disorders, epilepsy, head injury and stroke, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and she has dedicated considerable time in recent years to investigating the effects of personalized music playlists on the quality of life of older adult nursing home residents with dementia. A passionate advocate for undergraduate research, Dr. Lineweaver not only invites more than 30 students to collaborate with her on research in her lab each year, but she also serves as the Editor for the Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research. Of her 78 scholarly publications, 41 include at least one student co-author. She enjoys teaching Introduction to Neuroscience, Biological Bases of Behavior, Advanced Applied Neuroscience, Big Questions in Neuroscience, and several interdisciplinary co-taught core curriculum courses including: Food: Pasture, Table, Body and Mind; Music First: Engaging Student Scientists in the Community; and Mental Illness: Biological, Psychological, and Sociological Perspectives.

Beyond her responsibilities at Butler, she is a mother to three boys. She has especially enjoyed the professional/personal life balance she has been able to maintain as she has risen to the rank of full professor at Butler, having the amazing opportunity to focus her career on serving the University she so loves.

Erin Garriott ’01

Dr. Erin Garriott has spent her entire teaching career in the Indianapolis area, beginning as a third-grade teacher in MSD Pike Township in 1996. Her passion for inclusive classrooms led her to study Disabilities and Special Education at Butler University, which maintained her close ties to the College of Education. After initially filling a teaching role temporarily, she became a full-time faculty member and later earned her doctorate in Leadership in Organizations from the University of Dayton in 2022.

Dr. Garriott is deeply committed to disability advocacy and creating inclusive spaces. She has led impactful initiatives, such as a study abroad trip to Germany focused on Disability Rights and the Special Olympics World Games. Her dedication extends to her role in Athlete Leadership University, a partnership with Special Olympics Indiana, and her coteaching of Inclusive Physical Well-Being courses. Through her work, she strives to foster acceptance, access, and a shared commitment to learning and inclusion.

FACULTY COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Cynthia Pratt

Cynthia Pratt, Professor of Dance at Butler University since 1994, holds a Bachelor of Arts in Ballet from Virginia Intermont College (’79) and an MFA. from Temple University (’89). Before graduate school, she honed her skills in New York City, training in jazz dance under renowned teacher Lynn Simonson, while performing with numerous repertory companies. Her diverse performance experience spans ballet, modern, and jazz, both in the United States and Europe, including television and musical reviews. Pratt has taught and choreographed extensively for esteemed institutions such as the North Carolina School of the Arts, NYU, and the National Balletacademie Theatre School in Amsterdam, among others. She is also a Certified Movement Analyst with a degree from the Laban Institute for Movement Studies.

Since moving to Indianapolis, Pratt has choreographed for Butler Ballet and served as Guest Choreographer for Dance Kaleidoscope. As Artistic Director of Butler Chamber Dance since 2004, she has led performances at festivals and colleges across the Midwest. Her groundbreaking large-scale, site-specific dances (100–500 participants) include her work as choreographer for the National Science Foundation-funded StreamLines project, raising awareness of waterway concerns. Cynthia’s contributions to dance and community building were featured in The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Well-Being (2017). A twotime recipient of the Indianapolis Arts Council Creative Renewal Grant, she continues to teach and inspire both locally and abroad.

You may notice a welcome change to the regalia worn by the Butler Board of Trustees at this year’s University Commencement Ceremony and College Celebrations. Gary Butkus ’88, a member of the board, made a generous donation to purchase new regalia, debuted for the first time at the 2023 Commencement weekend. We are exceedingly grateful for Gary’s continued support, which will serve to enrich Butler’s signature celebration of academic achievement.
