Annabella Cobos ’22

Major: Marketing Minor: Journalism Coming into Butler as an Exploratory Studies student, Annabella Cobos was determined to choose classes that sparked her interest and helped her find her path. One of these courses was LC103, an Exploratory Studies course where she was able to learn about all of the majors and minors offered at Butler and to also learn about her own strengths and passions.

Throughout her first year of college, Cobos continued to choose classes in subjects that she found interesting, set aside time to talk with her academic

advisor and her professors, and continued to reflect on her interests. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she felt confident in declaring her major and minor.

“I have learned so much about myself and what I’d like my future career to look like because of the time I spent in the Exploratory Studies program,” says Cobos.

“It’s okay if you don’t know what you want to study right away.

Trust yourself. Acknowledge your strengths and talents and take classes that utilize your skills.

College is a time to explore who you are and who you want to be.”

EXPLORATORY STUDIES COURSE

In this course, you’ll learn about our 65+ majors by observing classes and discovering your own strengths, values, and interests. You can even participate in job-shadow experiences and interviews to explore where different degrees could take you after college.

PERSONALIZED ACADEMIC ADVISING

As an Exploratory Studies student, you’ll have a personal mentor who will get to know you and learn about your interests and personality. They’re happy to meet with you often to help you unlock your passions and build confidence in the path you choose.

THE MAJORS FAIR

Each year we hold an open house for students to mingle with representatives from every major at Butler. It’s a fun, laid-back atmosphere where you can learn about your academic options and enjoy conversations with faculty members.

WE LIVE TO College of Communication COLLABORATIVE, INNOVATIVE, EXPERIENTIAL, AND FORWARDTHINKING. This is the College of

Communication (CCOM)—a close-knit community that encourages students to mold their path and find opportunities and experiences vital to their development.

Students in our College benefit from a liberal arts foundation paired with vast opportunities for experiential learning.

Located in Indianapolis—a major market for internships and extensive professional networks—students find opportunities to work in front of or behind the camera, in clinical settings, as part of student media and publications, in a recording booth, with local government, and beyond.

And, you will be guided by some of the best faculty minds in their fields.

As a CCOM student, you’ll learn to think critically, to communicate clearly, and to solve complex problems. Supported though one-on-one relationships with faculty, you will graduate as a skilled communicator, prepared for a career in an ever-changing field.

Kayla Long ’19

Majors: Critical Communication and Media Studies; Spanish Kayla Long had her first job lined up months before she graduated—as the Marketing Manager for Sanctuary Wealth, a wealth-management firm run by Butler Trustee Jim Dickson ’95.

Long says the skills she’s learned at Butler—in the classroom, through internships, student organizations, and extracurricular activities— prepared her thoroughly.

Through campus opportunities, Long quickly started applying the knowledge she gained in CCOM to her roles as Secretary of the Black Student Union, Digital Marketing Coordinator for Jordan College of the Arts, and President of Butler’s chapter of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority—where she produced a documentary film about the experiences of black women at predominantly white institutions.

“I love what I learned here,” she says.

NEW MINOR: ESPORTS COMMUNICATION

Butler’s Esports Communication minor builds in-demand skills needed for success in the booming world of competitive gaming. In this interdisciplinary minor, you will gain a foundation in esports production, communication, business, marketing, and more, preparing you for a variety of careers in esports.

In addition to the core set of courses in the minor, you will have the ability to choose specific areas of interest with electives in multimedia graphics, leadership, sales, entrepreneurship, and media analytics.

INSPIRE, ENGAGE, College of Education IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (COE), we see you—your passions and

ideas, your strengths and opportunities for growth—and we help you integrate these seemingly disparate elements into a meaningful life and career. And, since all of the majors in COE offer direct admittance, you’ll be fully immersed in classroom and community settings starting with your first semester.

Patrick Conway ’20

Major: Secondary Education–Social Studies Concentration Minor: History and Sport Coaching As a first-year student in the College of Education (COE), Patrick Conway was in the classroom his first semester at Butler. Through early shadowing experiences, he began to learn about various types of schools and was able to see different teaching styles in action.

Once at Butler, you’ll work side-by-side with faculty in a variety of field-based experiences as you begin to integrate theory into practice. These experiences, along with thought-provoking coursework, will prepare you to lead in a way that is engaging and inspiring.

“This helped me decide from the very beginning what I wanted to do and what kind of teacher I knew I could be.”

Whether your aspirations lead you into the classroom or to another educational setting, we provide you with the tools and confidence needed to shape how future generations learn, dream, and prosper.

And, after completing his student teaching experiences (both in-person, and later virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic), he secured a position as a sixth-grade social studies teacher at the University of Chicago Charter School.

It didn’t stop there. He had the chance to embark on a COE-led study abroad trip to the Dominican Republic, taking him out of his comfort zone and allowing him to grow, both as a person and as an educator.

“As a COE student, we completed weekly lesson plans, had constant conversations about classroom management, and focused on teaching diverse learners. All of that preparation meant I was equipped to successfully tackle my first year of teaching.”

FEATURED MAJOR: YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT This new major is for students interested in pursuing youth work, extended education (challenge education/ outdoor education, after school programs, museum education programs), social work, counseling, student affairs, community development, or non-profit work.

In addition to 39 hours of professional education coursework, every student selects one of five concentration areas to provide more in-depth knowledge in a specific area of youth or community work. A Capstone Experience in the senior year, similar to student teaching, includes a full-time internship that aligns with both the major and the area of concentration.

PHARMACY Butler’s location in the heart of Indiana’s health sciences corridor gives pharmacy students unparalleled access to some of the region’s best experiential education sites and a multitude of traditional and non-traditional options to explore their interests. The Butler Commitment to our students means we invest highly in professional development from day one, ensuring you are taking classes from— and being advised by—pharmacy faculty even prior to matriculation into the professional phase of the PharmD program. While most students complete our program in six years, students who enter Butler with dualcredit or AP basic science or math courses may complete it in five years, reaching their full earning power a year earlier.

HEALTH SCIENCES Through a curriculum relevant to today’s healthcare challenges, the Health Sciences major combines foundational science with contemporary human healthcare taught by content experts and current healthcare providers. You will be uniquely and confidently prepared for a variety of healthcare professions, whether your future plans include going directly into the workforce or onto clinical graduate programs. Not sure of your future healthcare direction? Health Sciences majors are given plenty of room and support to explore.

HEALTHCARE AND BUSINESS This integrated undergraduate program prepares students for a wide range of options, whether it’s clinical graduate programs, an MBA, or heading straight into a job on the business or technology side of the healthcare industry. You will gain a deep knowledge in the relevant sciences as well as varying perspectives on the business side of the healthcare industry, including the roles of healthcare providers, insurers and administrators. And, upon graduation, you’ll be ready to speak the language of healthcare.

THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES (LAS) is Butler’s largest college with over 35 programs from departments in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as interdisciplinary programs from across the University—programs designed to open your mind to new ways of thinking and help you adapt in a changing world.

As an LAS student, you’ll be immersed in not only the oldest teachings, but also the latest learnings in culture and language, sciences and technology, and psychology and philosophy.

You’ll conduct research, learn how to question everything, and meticulously test new theories.

Outside of the classroom, you’ll participate in a variety of innovative work-based learning experiences with UnitedHealthcare. Inside the classroom, you’ll benefit from our robust Lacy School of Business curriculum, focused on marketing, sales, and general business. STUDENTS IN THE LACY SCHOOL

Through the Real Business Experience, a class all LSB students take during their sophomore year, you will form teams, create a business idea, apply for funding, and start and run your own business.
