Hubbard Award Finalists
In 1985, R.D. Hubbard dedicated a scholarship fund to recognize and encourage excellence at Butler. Mr. Hubbard and his wife, Joan Dale, have devoted many resources to the support of Butler students and facilities. The Hubbard Center, Hubbard Champions Training Center, Hubbard Welcome Center, and Hubbard Award of Excellence are but a few of the many gifts they have provided. Through the Hubbard Foundation, more than $3 million has been donated to our college. The Hubbards support numerous high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the United States.
ELLA BOOZER
Ella is a Journalism, Mass Communications major who will continue her studies at the University of Kansas . She has been an active journalism student at Butler, participating in BCTV, the sports media team, and the Grizzly Magazine – a student-produced publication . She covered the 2024 primary elections for the Associated Press and is part of Phi Theta Kappa . Ella was the first woman in 16 years to win Kansas Collegiate Media Journalist of the Year in 2024 .
ALLIE CONARD
Allie is a Pre-Engineering major and will pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Kansas State University . As a woman in STEM, Allie looks forward to making an impact in the world of math and science by improving quality of life . Allie says that Butler has broadened her mind and grown her as a person while creating lasting and impactful relationships with peers and faculty .
KASSIE DAVIS
Kassie is a Social Work major and will transfer to Friends University to continue her studies for that degree . Kassie is dedicated to using her knowledge and education to enter social work to make a difference in the lives of children and families who are looking for stability . At Butler, Kassie has been an active vocal music scholarship student and competed internationally with the A Cappella choir .
CLAIRE LOPEZ
Claire is a Mathematics major and will continue studies in Data Analytics/Statistics at a four-year institution . Support from instructors at Butler was pivotal to Claire’s success at determining what trajectory she wanted to take her studies . She graduates from Butler as an Academic All-American and has accomplished every goal set for herself so far .
CALLY MILLER
Cally is an Agriculture, Agribusiness major and is planning to transfer to Kansas State University to complete her degree . As a member of the nationally-ranked Livestock Judging team, Cally balanced study time with travel and competitions, achieving success throughout . Cally also served as a student tutor in accounting during her time as a Grizzly .
TUCKER STAGEMEYER
Tucker is an Agribusiness, General Agriculture double major and will pursue a degree in Ag Economics and General Agriculture at Kansas State University . He feels that Butler has set him on a path to success, from support of faculty, staff, and classmates, to the many resources available to all students that create opportunities for success in the classroom and beyond . Also a member of the Livestock Judging team, Tucker participated in the Kansas Collegiate Farm Bureau .
Order of the Purple
The Order of the Purple was established to recognize graduates who were outstanding in scholarship, leadership, service and character . The first group of seven students was inducted into the ORDER OF THE PURPLE in the spring of 1937 . Over the years, the requirements for this award have changed as standards and practices have changed Today, to be eligible for this honor, students must have completed 30 hours at Butler and hold a 3 .75 or higher total grade point average . Students inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE receive a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement .
Order of theGold
In 1985, the Board of Trustees created the ORDER OF THE GOLD award for students who maintain a 4 0 GPA Students who have completed 30 hours at Butler and achieved a 4 .0 total grade point average are honored as ORDER OF THE GOLD . These recipients were inducted into ORDER OF THE PURPLE earlier today and received a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement as a distinctive symbol of their academic achievement
Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society is an international honor society that recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students
There are more than 1,200 chapters around the world . PTK provides opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence . PTK members are inducted during a special ceremony held each fall and spring semester . At Commencement, PTK members are distinguished by a yellow stole
Early College Academy
Butler’s Early College Academy offers high school students the opportunity to learn about key industries while earning college credit up to an Associate degree, industry credentials, and skills to make immediate contributions in our workforce . Early College Academy students are distinguished by a white cord
Military Affiliation
Students and faculty who have served or are presently serving as Active Duty, Reserve or Guard members will be distinguished with a Red/White/Blue Cord
First Generation
Thirty-three percent of higher education students today are the first in their families to attend college . Butler recognizes how important this milestone is for both the graduates and their families . First generation students are distinguished by a green cord .

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE
Butler Community College’s Chain of Office is burnished bronze It features a large central medallion with the Butler logo “B” and the words Butler Community College, Kansas . The Chain also displays our four timeless institutional values . On the left, over the President’s heart, is the insignia of helping hands and the words “Service” and “Caring .” On the right is a lamp of learning with the words “Quality” and “Integrity ”
THE COLLEGE MACE
The college mace is an ornamental staff symbolizing the power of the college . Butler Community College’s mace is made of hickory, a tree native to Kansas . It features large central medallions with the Butler logo “B” and a continuous band denoting the establishment of the college in 1927 and a reiteration of our timeless institutional values: Quality, Integrity, Service and Caring . The mace is topped with a flame symbolizing the transcendent power of education .
ACADEMIC DRESS
Academic regalia evolved from caps and gowns worn in medieval universities . The bachelor’s and master’s gowns are usually made of plain black material without trimming, while the gown for the doctor’s degree is faced on the front with black or colored velvet and has three bars of the same material acrossthe sleeves . The bachelor’s gown has long open sleeves, the master’s longer closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow, and the doctor’s bell-shaped sleeves extending to the wrist .
Hoods are worn by master’s and doctoral recipients . These hoods can be distinguished by both length and color, with master’s hoods being three and one-half feet long and doctor’s four . The color of the velvet hood edging is wider for the doctoral hood than the master’s . The lining of the hood shows the official color or colors of the institution which awarded the degree The color of the hood edging indicates the area of study in which the degree was received .
